Cat Treadgold has been a publisher and editor, a classical singer, an Equity actress, a coordinator in Newsweek’s External Relations Department, a secretary at Siemens A.G., a voice teacher at Shoreline Community College, a receptionist at Soundworks recording studio, a cater-waiter with Glorious Foods, a restaurant hostess, and a coat-check girl at Regine’s. One hot, humid summer in Ohio, while cast as an Indian in an outdoor drama during the week and Anne in the musical Shenandoah on the weekends, she became certified in stage fighting. She was once semi-fluent in French, German, and Italian and occasionally attempts to revive those languages. She is currently learning Spanish.

 

Cat has an AB cum laude in German Literature from Princeton University, an MM in Vocal Performance from the University of Washington, and a certificate in Technical Writing and Editing from the University of Washington.

 

Two of her unpublished novels made it to the finals in their categories (mystery and romance) in the Pacific Northwest Writers Association Annual Contest. Three of her one-hour adaptations of operas (original translations and dialogue) were performed by Shoreline students while she was a teacher there.

 

She and her husband Jeff reside in Washington during the dry (drier) months and Arizona during the wet (wetter) ones.

Jan Heidrich-Rice wrote her first paid piece for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “Advice: Better to Give than to Get.” It spotlighted all the unsolicited advice that comes a woman’s way when she enters the world of motherhood.

 

After growing up in the Great Lakes state and graduating from Central Michigan University with a teaching degree, Jan moved with her husband to beautiful Boulder, Colorado, where they remained for twelve years. Eventually, the pull of extended family—and, in Jan’s case, the water—lured them to Georgia.


 Disenchanted with the changes she experienced in teaching through the years, she returned to school to earn a Master’s degree in applied and creative writing from Kennesaw State University. Torn between a passion to create and a desire to help pay kids’ college tuition, Jan put her skills to work in the grants and resource development arena. She felt blessed to lend a voice to “work that matters.” Yet one of her true passions—aside from her family, gardening, and the water—continued to be creative writing. 

 

Through the years, in addition to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jan’s work has appeared in Quilt Magazine, I Do for Brides, and The Atlanta Lawyer. Her short story “Murder on Lake Allatoona” was part of a Sisters in Crime anthology, Mystery, Atlanta Style, produced by Ladybug Press. 

 

Today, she works as a full-time creative writer. Much of her writing focuses on family—almost always complex, often untraditional, and, inevitably, a beautiful mess. Her essays capture the wonder and humor of everyday life, at home and on the road, and her fiction often unwinds in small towns surrounded by lush lake settings, much like she experienced growing up in Michigan and now in Georgia.

One unshakable fact that I knew about myself was that I couldn’t write a book if my life depended on it. This belief stemmed from my deep admiration for the authors whose books I gobbled up starting at the age of nineteen. My tastes were eclectic, and I usually had five books in my car so that I’d have access to whatever I was in the mood for at that particular moment. Books were my window to the world, as they are for all readers. I couldn’t bear the thought of not having something to read, partly because I’m one of those people who never want to waste a moment, and partly because I love seeing life from different perspectives.

I took the unexpected path to writing when I was trying to figure out how I could occupy myself if I became bedridden by a mystery illness that had already puzzled a parade of doctors.

At that time I was only two years into the nine-year odyssey to find out what was causing a wide and random range of debilitating symptoms. Fortunately for me, I conveniently forgot I couldn’t write and I dove right into the first book, which I wrote in secret. I finished it a year later―to the day―and immediately started the second book.

Once I began writing, I was on a roll. When things got pretty desperate, health-wise, I decided I wanted to see one of my books in print before I kicked the bucket. This perverse pursuit was added to my list of obligations, which included managing a mortgage company, while my health continued to worsen.

But self-publishing the third book I’d written was a triumph of spirit, followed by a worsening of my pain. It got so bad, I physically couldn’t write anymore. During that time, I started two books but had to abandon them.

Nine years after my weird collection of symptoms started, I got the correct diagnosis: Lyme disease. But since it took so long to accurately diagnose, I now had late-stage Lyme, which is incurable. I was vindicated, in that I wasn’t crazy or imagining these symptoms, but there was nothing I could do to stave off the incessant pain. I started writing again. It allowed me to get out of my body and up into my head, at least for a short while.

So, here I am, more than twenty years since I turned to writing for solace. By some miracle, I’ve gained the upper hand against Lyme. I’m back to living my life at full-throttle, unfazed by the widespread permanent nerve damage. Aside from the pain, which I’ve become accustomed to, I’m just as active as I ever was, and I’m left with this wonderful gift from a monster of a disease. Given how everything has played out, I wouldn’t change a thing if I could. Writing has been the unexpected gift that keeps giving.

Terri Sabol is an accomplished children’s book author, renowned for her heartwarming and entertaining stories featuring the real-life adventures of her two beloved rescue kittens, Oscar and Emmy. Born and raised in Texas, Terri developed a love of writing and storytelling at a young age, and always dreamed of one day becoming an author. Thinking that was out of reach, she focused on her other dream… teaching.

After graduating from college with a Masters degree in education, Terri worked as an early childhood teacher, and it was during this time that her passion for picture books truly blossomed. She was inspired by the joy and wonder that children experienced when reading and listening to stories, and it was this love for inspiring young minds that led her to create her own series of children’s books.

Terri’s debut book, “Oscar and Emmy Get Rescued”, was published in 2016, and told the heartwarming story of how she came to adopt her two kittens from the animal shelter where she volunteered. The book was an instant hit with children and parents alike, and it quickly became clear that there was a demand for more stories featuring Oscar and Emmy and to help educate children on the importance being involved in pet care.

Over the years, Terri has continued to write new books in the series, each one capturing the unique personalities and quirks of her two adventurous cats. Her books not only entertain children, but also promote the values of compassion and kindness towards animals, as well as the importance of rescue and adoption.

In addition to her Oscar and Emmy series, Terri has also written several other books showing off her writing skills, including “Green With Envy” and “Kneading a Winning Idea”.

When she’s not writing, Terri can be found spending time with her two rescue kitties, Oscar and Emmy. She also loves travelling and exploring new places and visiting old favorites, all the while taking inspiration for her next book. Through her stories, Terri hopes to inspire children to explore the world around them, to embrace their imaginations, to never give up on their goals, and to always be kind and compassionate towards others, especially animals.
