This book was so gentle in explaining loosing a pet. I enjoyed how the vet explained to the kids one step at a time what was happening and allowed them to sit with their sadness. Me and my kiddo both cried it was such a beautiful story.<br />

Wonderful read. Sad, heartbreaking, but true in all ways about losing a friend/pet. Wish I had known about this book when we lost our favorite pet a couple years ago.

I really enjoyed this book, it really hit me hard because I have lived through this experience. The story dealt with a very difficult subject in a very thoughtful and compassionate way. I think that it would be a good book to introduce a difficult subject to your young children, the loss of a pet. I recommend this book to any parent whose child might be going through this difficult situation. It will help them understand what is happening and maybe make them feel better about the process.

Our family has always been centered around many different animals, so I was a little worried about picking this up but kept an open mind. I’m so glad I did because we just went through a situation almost EXACTLY like this, so it was timely. Even though we read this after the fact, it still helped my two kids (7 and 11) really get a better understanding that it’s a universal occurrence. It also gave us another chance to open up another discussion and let them know that they aren’t alone. I loved the compassion the author showed and how the rainbow bridge was detailed with grace. I would most highly recommend picking this up for the kids in your life on this difficult topic.

Oscar and Emmy Lose a Friend is a children’s book for kids between the ages of five to eleven years old. This book tells the story of a stray cat, named Shadow that Oscar and Emmy’s family has been feeding and caring for. When they notice that Shadow does not look well, they take the cat to the vet who tells them that Shadow has cancer. Oscar and Emmy’s family care for Shadow until they must make the difficult decision to have Shadow put to sleep. The author has done a wonderful job of discussing the heart wrenching topic of the loss of a beloved pet in an easy-to-understand manner for children. This book will teach children about stray animals, loss, compassion, and how to say goodbye to a beloved pet. I highly recommend this book.

This was a great book for children to learn about the unfortunate parts of life. Oscar and Emmy are cats living with a sister and brother. They have another cat, Shadow, who comes and visits them. Because she visits so often, the family starts to feed her. One day, they noticed she wasn’t feeling well. They decide to take her to the vet and find out she has cancer. In the end, the family has to put the cat down. They each say their goodbyes and bring Shadow home to always have her near. At the end of the book, they talk about losing a pet and the rainbow bridge. I thought this was a great way to talk to children about the loss of a pet. It took a gentle, but honest approach to such a process.

Oscar and Emmy are two feline siblings and since they made friends with a local stray car, Shadow, they have built a new routine around her visits when they play peekaboo through the window and meow at each other through the door at feeding time, but over time, they realise that something is wrong with Shadow.

At this point, they made sure their humans knew something was wrong and they decided to take her to the vet and see what is wrong, unfortunately, Shadow is very ill, and they have to have a talk about what to do and what is best for Shadow, but how will Oscar and Emmy feel about it and what will they all decide to do?

This is a very touching story which talks about a difficult and extremely sad topic in such a way that it encourages conversation, understanding and ways to cope when this happens in real life and one, I would highly recommend.

This author grabs hold of your heart with this tear-jerker. So much heartbreak follows the death of a loved fur baby and many do not know where to begin when healing from such a loss. Books like these help not only children to understand their feelings but also help parents guide their children through the grieving process. I highly recommend it, especially if you are in the situation of needing to explain this life-changing event to children.

Oh wow. So, this is the first book I have read by Terri Sabol, and it was a lot heavier than I expected, especially for a book aimed at 5–11-year-olds. Having lived through this exact scenario I found myself choked up and shedding some tears as I finished the book. While this book uses a stray animal that a family took care of the emotions were very strong and while I think this book is beautifully illustrated while shining light on a very difficult topic it was hard to read because of the intense emotions of having experienced the loss of a pet to euthanasia. Charlie and Abby felt the pain of this cat that they took care of it keeps it slightly lighter than the full intensity of what it would or can be like if it was their own.

Oscar and Emmy love playing with their friend Shadow through the window every night. Th play hide and seek before Shadow goes to the front door to get some food from the family.

However, Shadow begins coming straight to the door, then eating less and the kids notice that something is wrong. Mom and the kids take Shadow to the vet and they’re told she’s sick and will die.

Oscar and Emmy Lose a Friend is such a sweet and lovely story about their friend getting sick and passing away. I definitely cried but I will be getting a physical copy for my child when he’s older since we have cats that will be old before he’s ready.

I think it explains euthanasia is a very kid friendly and age appropriate way for young kids. It has a sweet tribute to the cat lost and opens up conversation if more discussion is needed. I love Oscar and Emmy so much!

I read this story tonight with my child, my little one stayed intrigued almost the whole time. This is my first time reading a story by Terri Sabol. I really liked the message this story has( what it’s like to lose a beloved pet),but it also made me sad as we just recently went through something similar with our dog, and he crossed the rainbow bridge. I will definitely keep the story for reading later as my child gets older and we have more pets 🥰I also like the design, it was very colorful and eye-catching.

This book I was iffy on from the start I mean it’s a hard subject matter but I’ll be honest by the end I’m actually really glad I got it. Sometimes as parents we sugar coat hard stuff for our kids, this book took a hard situation for people of all ages really and handled it with clear information but also the heart side of it. My nieces thought it was a good book to help kids understand this part of pet owning and such. The illustrations were beautifully done.Four stars for a good story that touched our hearts.

The art in this book is so beautiful, and my heart really hurt reading this one. Putting your pet down is very heartbreaking not only for you as the human but for any pet friends they had. I will admit this book did have me shed a few tears. Owning pets is one of the best things but having to say good bye to them is heart breaking. Poor Shadow! The children in this book show such compassion towards Oscar and Emmy and they also did towards the stray cat Shadow.
This book is a great story to help explain to children about what happens when animals become poorly. The illustrations in the book are lovely as well.

This book covers the difficult topic of what to do when an animal we love becomes so ill that a choice needs to be made about the animal’s welfare. It’s a difficult topic when our pets are ready to cross the rainbow bridge and this book covers that topic well. I like how the children in the story are able to help in the end of life care for an animal they care about. The story is well written and age appropriate.

Oscar and Emmy Lose a Friend (Oscar and Emmy Series) by Terri Sabol. This book is so good for kids aged 5-11 who have pets and have to go thru the horrible part of losing that pet. Oscar and Emmy are 2 pet cats and they are very well cared for. Their children have found a stray cat outside and they have been feeding it. Oscar and Emmy’s owners have taken it to the vet to get it fixed and they are doing their best to take care of it. When they notice its health declining their owners take it to the vet again and have to make the horrible decision to euthanize. This book will help kids process the awful process of losing a pet and the aftermath of it. This would make a great gift for a family mourning their pet.

A beautiful and thoughtfully written story that can be hard for some to talk about. Although I have never needed to have a pet euthanize a family pet. This book makes it easier to have the conversation with children. The story is about a family with 2 cats, named Oscar and Emmy, that help a neighborhood stray cat who they soon discover is very sick. I would definitely consider reading this story to my children if we were to find our beloved pet is hurting, needing comfort, love, and affection as he or she takes their last breath.

After recently having to put my own cat, Simba, down due to cancer, this book was spot on. The vet we used was very compassionate as was the vet in this story. After reading this story and taking a moment to remember my own experience, I went back and enjoyed the pictures as well. This author uses words simply enough for young children to understand and encourages questions for better understanding.
Can’t say I enjoyed reading this story but when is death ever an enjoyable read. However, this story was nicely done.

I love informative children’s stories! This has everything a parent could ask for, when it comes to explaining pet loss to a child. The way the author walked through the steps that follow a sick pet were spot on. Oscar and Emmy asked many questions along the way, which opened up conversation between the Parents, Veterinarians and Children. The pictures told the story as well. Which made for the perfect story for fur baby loss. What a great introduction to The Rainbow Bridge. This book is a must have for all children’s book shelves.

This is a very emotional book but one that should be shared with all young pet owners. In this story, Shadow, who is the stray cat that keeps showing up, has stopped eating like normal. Oscar and Emmy’s owners notice a lump on Shadow’s belly, so they take her to the vet. The news is not good and now they must all say goodbye to Shadow.

Very gently written in a way that young children can have a better understanding of what happens when pets become too sick. I would recommend this for all pet owners, especially those of the younger generation.

I wanted a book to help explain about animals passing away. It may come to a point where she will need to be euthanized. This was a great book to help show why we may have to put animals to sleep sometimes. It was told in a way that little kids can understand.

This was a difficult and an emotional book to read. The toughest decision in life is when we decide to put a pet to sleep. And explaining it to children is very critical . This book covers the subject.
Oscar and Emmy are very fond of their stray feral cat Shadow which lives in their neighborhood and comes over for food. Over a time, they see a difference in Shadow. The family has to take a tough call about putting Shadow to sleep.
It was a very difficult book to read for me, but the awareness does help.

This book deals with the heartbreaking life event of saying goodbye to a beloved pet. It was so well and sensitively written. It’s a very emotional time losing a pet and it can be difficult to find the words and this story would be a great way to broach the subject with young children and to help explain the process and get the discussion started. A wonderful addition to any home or classroom library. Highly recommend.
