Oscar and Emmy Foster Kittens (Oscar and Emmy Series) by Terri Sabol – Review by Crystal Brehant

These Oscar and Emmy books are always so cute and informative about animals. This one specifically deals with fostering. Charlie and Abby learn so much through fostering three tiny kittens. These books always take real life pet and animal problems and bring them to an age appropriate level for children. Over crowding at animal shelters is a very real, very common thing. This touches on it gently and helps teach about what it’s like to take in kittens, but then to adopt them out so that you can take on more to help with the over population of cats.

I am writing this semi biased as I LOVE cats. This book was super cute and informative about fostering kittens for the target age. I would find this very appropriate to read with kids when considering fostering cats/kittens. I was able to connect with this in my own experience as someone who fostered a litter of kittens. I enjoyed the voice of this book and thought they handled the part where they had to let the kittens go very well. The children handled it better than I did!

Oscar and Emmy Foster Kittens is the eighth book in the Oscar and Emmy series by Terri Sabol. It is a uplifting children’s story that is woven around some really cute illustrations.
Charlie and Abby (twins) have been volunteering at an animal shelter and discuss the possibility of fostering animals with their mother. The family discusses the responsibilities that fostering would bring, and then the opportunity to foster (3) 4 day-old kittens comes along and they embrace the chance to help. We follow along with the twins, as well as Oscar and Emmy (the family cats) as they help care for the kittens. Fostering the kittens from 4 days old to 12/13 weeks when they are put up for adoption. Along the way, we also learn about kitten care, reasons you should foster, facts about fostering/volunteering, and much more. I thought it was a really heartwarming story, especially when they find the perfect fur-ever families for the kittens at the end. So sweet.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Terri Sabol!

This series is one that we have enjoyed from the beginning and we were all excited to pick up the next book. Getting back into these characters and their engaging stories took no effort at all. The book has yet another interesting story to focus on, addressing common issues to educate kids told through fun characters.
The illustrations in the book really help bring it to life. They make it easy to picture what is going on and easy for children to understand. My kids connected with it and wanted to read the book multiple times. We really enjoyed this story and we are looking forward to the next.

Charlie and Abby learn that there is a need for families to foster kittens at their local shelter. They ask their mom for help, and along with Oscar and Emmy, the family helps to get the kittens off to a great start. Charlie and Abby are responsible for feedings and teaching the kittens to use the litter box. Oscar and Emmy help support Peach, Pear, and Plum as they navigate the world at large.

This is a great book to read with youngsters who may be interested in having a kitten. It could help them realize the responsibilities that come with pet ownership, while also encouraging a fostering situation to begin with to make sure that the placement is a good fit for both parties. This book also briefly discusses spaying/neutering.

What another fun chapter in the Oscar and Emmy series. This time, their mom is fostering kittens. Oscar and Emmy want to help her. She teaches them the rules of fostering. The story takes us from 3-4 days old to 11 weeks, after their spay & neuter surgery, when they are adopted. I really enjoy reading these stories because the other does such a nice job of explaining cat care in a way that children can understand. My grandson always loves to have these books read to him. The story is well-written and easy for kids to follow. The pictures are colorful and can hold attention.

I just love the Oscar and Emmy series! The way Sabol addresses everyday issues and concerns relating to animals and pets but does it such a way that is age-appropriate for children is simply fantastic. I love that her books are honest yet optimistic and hopeful. I appreciate that she writes from the children’s perspectives but still gives voice to the parents. The illustrations are fantastic. I cannot recommend these books and this series enough!

I absolutely adored “Oscar and Emmy Foster Kittens” by Terri Sabol. This heartwarming story follows Oscar and Emmy, two loving cats who take on the role of nurturing three bottle-fed kittens from the local animal shelter. The author does a fantastic job of detailing the first three months of kitten development and showing how important it is for people, including children, to play a role in saving animal lives through fostering.

I loved how the family, with the help of Oscar and Emmy, prepare the foster kittens to be adopted by other families. The bond between the cats and the kittens is beautifully portrayed, and it’s heartwarming to see the love and care they provide for the little ones.

Oscar and Emmy Foster Kittens is a wonderful children’s book with beautiful illustrations and has valuable teaching lesson to go along. Learning the value of fostering an animal is very important and as Abby and Charlie embrace wanting to help their local shelter foster kittens for the first time to help them be social and adoptable.

I love the lessons that this story teaches and how there may be a lot of work in fostering but it is also valuable to not only the kittens (or any animal), but also helps the shelters as well. Although this story is more for ages 5-10….I highly recommend this story even for the young at heart. This is a wonderful story.

Terri Sabol is an accomplished children’s book author, renowned for her heartwarming and entertaining stories featuring the real-life adventures of her two beloved rescue kittens, Oscar and Emmy. Born and raised in Texas, Terri developed a love of writing and storytelling at a young age, and always dreamed of one day becoming an author. Thinking that was out of reach, she focused on her other dream… teaching.

After graduating from college with a Masters degree in education, Terri worked as an early childhood teacher, and it was during this time that her passion for picture books truly blossomed. She was inspired by the joy and wonder that children experienced when reading and listening to stories, and it was this love for inspiring young minds that led her to create her own series of children’s books.

Terri’s debut book, “Oscar and Emmy Get Rescued”, was published in 2016, and told the heartwarming story of how she came to adopt her two kittens from the animal shelter where she volunteered. The book was an instant hit with children and parents alike, and it quickly became clear that there was a demand for more stories featuring Oscar and Emmy and to help educate children on the importance being involved in pet care.

Over the years, Terri has continued to write new books in the series, each one capturing the unique personalities and quirks of her two adventurous cats. Her books not only entertain children, but also promote the values of compassion and kindness towards animals, as well as the importance of rescue and adoption.

In addition to her Oscar and Emmy series, Terri has also written several other books showing off her writing skills, including “Green With Envy” and “Kneading a Winning Idea”.

When she’s not writing, Terri can be found spending time with her two rescue kitties, Oscar and Emmy. She also loves travelling and exploring new places and visiting old favorites, all the while taking inspiration for her next book. Through her stories, Terri hopes to inspire children to explore the world around them, to embrace their imaginations, to never give up on their goals, and to always be kind and compassionate towards others, especially animals.

Our family has always been centered around many different animals, so I was a little worried about picking this up but kept an open mind. I’m so glad I did because we just went through a situation almost EXACTLY like this, so it was timely. Even though we read this after the fact, it still helped my two kids (7 and 11) really get a better understanding that it’s a universal occurrence. It also gave us another chance to open up another discussion and let them know that they aren’t alone. I loved the compassion the author showed and how the rainbow bridge was detailed with grace. I would most highly recommend picking this up for the kids in your life on this difficult topic.

This was a great book for children to learn about the unfortunate parts of life. Oscar and Emmy are cats living with a sister and brother. They have another cat, Shadow, who comes and visits them. Because she visits so often, the family starts to feed her. One day, they noticed she wasn’t feeling well. They decide to take her to the vet and find out she has cancer. In the end, the family has to put the cat down. They each say their goodbyes and bring Shadow home to always have her near. At the end of the book, they talk about losing a pet and the rainbow bridge. I thought this was a great way to talk to children about the loss of a pet. It took a gentle, but honest approach to such a process.

Oscar and Emmy are two feline siblings and since they made friends with a local stray car, Shadow, they have built a new routine around her visits when they play peekaboo through the window and meow at each other through the door at feeding time, but over time, they realise that something is wrong with Shadow.

At this point, they made sure their humans knew something was wrong and they decided to take her to the vet and see what is wrong, unfortunately, Shadow is very ill, and they have to have a talk about what to do and what is best for Shadow, but how will Oscar and Emmy feel about it and what will they all decide to do?

This is a very touching story which talks about a difficult and extremely sad topic in such a way that it encourages conversation, understanding and ways to cope when this happens in real life and one, I would highly recommend.

Oh wow. So, this is the first book I have read by Terri Sabol, and it was a lot heavier than I expected, especially for a book aimed at 5–11-year-olds. Having lived through this exact scenario I found myself choked up and shedding some tears as I finished the book. While this book uses a stray animal that a family took care of the emotions were very strong and while I think this book is beautifully illustrated while shining light on a very difficult topic it was hard to read because of the intense emotions of having experienced the loss of a pet to euthanasia. Charlie and Abby felt the pain of this cat that they took care of it keeps it slightly lighter than the full intensity of what it would or can be like if it was their own.

Oscar and Emmy love playing with their friend Shadow through the window every night. Th play hide and seek before Shadow goes to the front door to get some food from the family.

However, Shadow begins coming straight to the door, then eating less and the kids notice that something is wrong. Mom and the kids take Shadow to the vet and they’re told she’s sick and will die.

Oscar and Emmy Lose a Friend is such a sweet and lovely story about their friend getting sick and passing away. I definitely cried but I will be getting a physical copy for my child when he’s older since we have cats that will be old before he’s ready.

I think it explains euthanasia is a very kid friendly and age appropriate way for young kids. It has a sweet tribute to the cat lost and opens up conversation if more discussion is needed. I love Oscar and Emmy so much!

I read this story tonight with my child, my little one stayed intrigued almost the whole time. This is my first time reading a story by Terri Sabol. I really liked the message this story has( what it’s like to lose a beloved pet),but it also made me sad as we just recently went through something similar with our dog, and he crossed the rainbow bridge. I will definitely keep the story for reading later as my child gets older and we have more pets 🥰I also like the design, it was very colorful and eye-catching.
