While not my first Wickstrom children’s book I enjoyed it as if it was. Lois always manages to captivate children with her tales, and wonderful illustrations, while always managing to teach them something at the same time. In this case, this being the fifth book in the series, Loretta takes us back to her garden to take us full circle in the life of fireflies. We enjoyed this one.

Loretta is back in her garden, a place she loves to spend her time, and today, while she is planting flowers in a freshly prepared bed, she finds some glowing larvae, she is so intrigued by them that she runs to get her ant farm, which is currently empty and waiting for some new residents and so she moves some of the larvae in.

As she watches them tunnel, she finds that they are also building hut like structures around themselves from the mud, but what will happen to them now? This is a charming book about the lifecycle of a firefly which is full of information in a format which all ages will enjoy and all while learning about nature and insects all at the same time.

I’ve read a lot of Lois Wickstrom’s books, but this is my first adventure with Loretta. I love how you learn without even realizing it while reading this clever book. The illustrations are really fascinating and colorful as well!

Have you ever wondered about the life cycle of a firefly? Well Loretta finds out all about fireflies as she observes them through multiple stages of their lives. I also love the added information at the end of the story that allows you to learn even more about fireflies. I will definitely be checking out more of this series.

My entire household loves this author, and the kids get so excited when I bring a new book home. Imagine their surprise when it was centered on their favorite insect, lightning bugs! When Loretta happens upon some luminous larvae, she is intrigued and embarks on a journey to understand the life cycle of these new creatures. I love the way the author is able to flawlessly weave educational tidbits without losing the interest of kiddos. The illustrations were a little different from other books by Lois, but they are still wonderful and helpful for the young ones to gain more context. I loved the facts about fireflies even as an adult! These books always spark such wonderful conversations with my kids. I highly recommend having this in your classroom or at home and letting it light up your little one’s curiosity!

The Glow in Loretta’s Garden is Book Five in the Loretta’s Insects series. It is a children’s picture book that teaches children about the life cycle of fireflies. Loretta loves insects and while digging in her flower bed she finds glowing larvae. She places them in an empty ant farm and watches them as they dig little mud houses underground. After several days of observing the activity of the larvae Loretta notices that there are fireflies coming out so she takes the ant farm outside so they can fly free. She then spends time watching the fireflies and makes some interesting observations about how they flash. A cute and informative read that is a good resource for kids to learn about the life cycle of a firefly. The illustrations were okay, but I personally found the illustrations in previous books in this series more captivating and engaging. Overall, a great read.

Another fantastic story by this author. I knew this story would be educational, SHHHH! Don’t tell the kiddo’s. This story is all about bugs, and Loretta is just the right person for this job. She is observant and watches the bugs grow and change. Giving the readers valuable information. This author encourages her readers to look about their environment and discover the bugs in their yard. This story is well written and easy for children to follow. A real crowd pleaser, that needs to be in every child’s library.

The Glow in Loretta’s Garden (Loretta’s Insects) by Lois Wickstrom. This is mine and my nephews favorite author so we were super excited to read this one. Its the cutest story about Loretta finding glowing bugs in her flower garden. Loretta collects a few of them and puts them in her ant farm to study them. She gets scared when they quit glowing in her ant farm so she shakes them and they start glowing again making her happy. She finally decides that she needs to set them free and when she does she realizes they are fireflies! She then takes it upon herself to learn all she can about fireflies. She watches them and studies them all the time. This book is so good for kids to learn about fireflies and it’s also good for teachers to use in the classroom. All of the books by this author are very educational!

I read this book fairly quickly. Personally I think it needs something . I was Intruiged with the idea to learn a little something about fireflys. I feel that was not accomplished until I read some small print at the back instead of filtered through the story.

I have read other books by this author that seem well done but for me this one does not qualify. It is an okay read but I wanted more information. The illustrations are loose but the cover is well done and also what drew me to the story

We love running around trying to catch them. And after reading this I learned a new way to draw them in, that I can’t wait to use lol. It was a quick read but very interesting and informative. As always I love these little tidbits at the end of the books. This one gave me some facts I didn’t know and I’m glad to know them now. Wickstrom deserves countless accolades for bringing STEM to kiddos at such a young age in such a fun and easily understandable way. The Glow in Loretta’s Garden teaches young readers about the lifecycle of fireflies (or lightning bugs where I’m from ;)). The way Wickstrom is able to provide readers with a science lesson through storytelling is phenomenal. She’s able to weave her lessons throughout the story of Loretta and teach not only the academic side of it, but also an emotional component too. And the illustrations are bright and captivating and go along perfectly with the story. This is definitely another book you’ll want to add to your ever-growing Wickstrom collection.

Spend some time with Loretta in her garden and you’ll learn about the life cycle of what I’ve always termed “lightening bugs” or fireflies.

This is another great addition to any personal or school library. There are STEM features of this book, which is a favorite aspect I have of this author. Be sure to check out her other books as well!

An introduction to fireflies. Everyone loves catching fireflies when they are young, I like how Loretta is interested in the life of the fireflies and tries to watch them in her ant farm, until she has to set them free so they can fly and glow. Reading the information on fireflies at the end, I can see how Loretta was to be experiencing all the stages of a fireflies life but the wording didn’t translate well, and I was left kind of confused. My favorite part of the book is the information about the life of a firefly at the end, I was interested to know they are considered beetles, and that they glow in all stages of their life.

Beautiful watercolor illustrations that bring the pages to life. Lois Wickstrom is a treasure in the way she takes a very common thing, such as a kid interested in bugs and turns it into an informative story for all ages to enjoy. In the story Loretta finds “armadillo bugs” which is the name she gives one of the four stages of a fireflies’ life cycle. While at first Loretta took the bugs and put them in her ant farm to observe them, she later releases them back into her garden. She wants to find more of them but when she discovers the eggs, she respects nature and covers them back up until they hatch on their own. The life of fireflies at the end honestly was informative for the whole family and left us all with one question, There’s glowing turtles?

The Glow in Loretta’s Garden is the fifth book in the Loretta’s Insects series by Lois Wickstrom. This is another fun children’s illustrated storybook, full of interesting facts about insects- this time we learn about the lifecycle of fireflies. The added educational elements added an extra element of interest to the engaging adventure.
As we discovered previously, Loretta loves insects, and this time she discovers some glowing larvae while digging in her flower bed. She puts them in an empty ant farm and watches them do interesting things. What happens when they finally hatch? You really should discover all the interesting details for yourself – because what happens makes for a fun read.
This is not just a cute story, it also encourages children to learn while they read. I read this story with my grandson, but we wish the illustrations were better, as they are very simplistic and aren’t as bright, bold, or eye catching like a lot of Ms. Wickstrom’s other books- so they didn’t grab or hold his attention like the others have done.
As with the other books in the series, the ‘new’ cover is great, but unfortunately the illustrations inside the book aren’t up to the same standard. With better illustrations, this would have been an even better story, in our opinion.
Loretta’s Insects series contains (so far):
-Ladybugs For Loretta (Book #1)
-Bee’s In Loretta’s Bonnet (Book #2)
-Loretta’s Caterpillar (Book #3)
-What Loretta’s Katydid Did (Book #4)
-The Glow in Loretta’s Garden (Book #5)
Happy reading!
