Unexpected by Laylah Abrams is a sweet star-crossed romance. It follows Nick (aspiring artist, student, and waiter) and Claire (rich, famous ex-model) as they learn what love is. Nick and Claire each have their reasons for staying and for secrets but when the tabloids get involved -who can say what is true? Or even guess what love is? I found this book to be an interesting twist on the common rich/poor coupling. It definitely deserves a read for anyone that like modern-day fairytale romance.
This is a very cute, angsty read that will have you silently cursing at the characters until the very end. It’s a whirlwind of a romance for Claire, the beautiful celebrity heiress, and Nick, the struggling artist, who meet while Nick is serving Claire and her friends all they could want and more at a high-end restaurant. Nick and Claire rendezvous by chance in the hallway that night and things go from there…but little do they realize that they are falling in love and that may pose a problem. I really enjoyed the plot line of this book and I absolutely loved that we get a dual POV in a roundabout way. The story is really sweet and does end in an HEA. The spice is there but it is very behind the scenes. I really recommend this book. It’s quick and great if you are wanting a palette cleanser between bigger reads. Reviewed by @meggs1717
The title of this book couldn’t have been more perfect and I absolutely adored both Claire and Nick instantly.
Claire is nothing like the friends she’s with when we first meet her and it’s obvious to anyone who was paying attention to her and Nick was paying attention. Claire wants for nothing. Her Dad has money, she is a successful model trying to find her way.
Nick is a grad student getting a masters in art and struggling to make ends meet. Works as a waiter on top of his class load and never knew how much of a difference his job would make in his life.
Claire was a great woman but she was also quite frustrating and closed minded with her beliefs on love not matter how understandable they were.
This was a great introduction to Ms. Abrams and her writing. The storyline kept me engaged in the book and was a little sad when it was over. I look forward to see what she releases next.

Having not read anything from this author and being a lover of romance and romantic comedies I was pleasantly surprised by Unexpected. A young socialite and a struggling artist close to losing his scholarship are living very different lives have an instant attraction and don’t want to let each other go despite their differences. This book focuses on their struggles and obstacles that they have to overcome to be together. The characters are well written, and perfectly flawed, just like real life, and I enjoyed how the author brought them to life. I had trouble putting this down.
A story that will have you following page by page waiting for the next turn. To watch Claire and Nick meet and everything go in such a way that their love can kindle into a great relationship. An enjoyable read from youth adult to adult. What will happen in the end, will there relationship flourish or fall apart due to the differences?
Claire Morgan model and business woman. Nick is a waiter and a local art student. Claire and her best friend Candie along with their dates and other friends end up at the restaurant Nick works at. All of Claire’s friends see him as a nobody but she sees so much more in him. Claire has slipped away from her friends after the restaurant closes. She hides away and sneaks off with Nick just to get a little bit of time with him. He leaves her with his number. They both are different people when they are together. They both see the real sides of each other. However Claire doesn’t believe in love. Will this just be a fling or could they have found what they are both looking for?
Reading the preview for this book, I was already drawn to the storyline and wanted to see how this relationship would end up. I absolutely love to read about love stories of individuals from opposite spectrums but yet find one another compelling enough to make themselves vulnerable and yearn for each other. Claire, belonging to a rich class of youngsters, comes from wealth and only acts the part as it is expected of her. She is very intelligent, well educated, and wants to break into her own stance of contributions. Nick, a struggling art graduate student, is a waiter at a restaurant where he ends up meeting Claire. Nick’s bold statements catch the attention of Claire and they start getting to know each other a bit better. They gain a deeper appreciation for one another. Not only can they really be themselves around each other but they also start to encourage their passions they both have. Love is about being vulnerable enough to show your true nature and support their own paths and passions. Such a wonderful read for everyone to experience!

Unexpected is a contemporary romance about two people who meet unexpectedly and make an unexpected connection. For all outward appearances Claire and Nick are complete opposites. She is a beautiful heiress who is used to being in the spotlight. Claire has both beauty and brains, but she keeps the educated part of her persona private and instead lets the tabloids report on who her newest love interest is. Nick is an aspiring artist currently working as a waiter in the hopes of not losing his scholarship. When Claire and her friends go out for dinner at the restaurant where Nick works him, and Claire find that they have an instant connection with one another. The two strike up a secret friendship which quickly turns into more. A heartfelt read about finding love in the most unexpected circumstances. The characters were relatable, and I loved that Claire was not just another ditzy heiress that was only concerned about her looks and how popular she was. Nick was down-to-earth, smart, funny, and the perfect match for Claire. This book had friendship, romance, love, angst, drama and a splatter of wit and humor.

This book is a great romantic story between two unlikely characters. From completely different worlds, it is hard to see how they could possibly make something work and yet, that is exactly what you want them to do right from the moment they meet. I found it so easy to connect with these characters, and I became emotionally invested in what they were going through. This is the first book that I had by this author but it won’t be the last. If all of her characters are these easy to connect with, then I will be reading everything she has to offer. This is a great book that is worth the read.
This was a beautiful story that I really enjoyed. The author has an amazing way of writing that brings the story and the characters to life. This is a story about 2 people from 2 different worlds and all the struggles and obstacles they have to go through to be together. Struggles that include their different positions in the world, the opinions of their friends and also their own self doubts and inner struggles.
Clare is a heiress and a smart woman in her own rights, however that isn’t seen very often as most people just see her as the pretty ex model. She really wants to take the helm of her fathers business and make changes but with people telling her she doesn’t have to and no one expects if of her how can she show people what she can really do?
Nick is an art student. His life is a constant juggling act between school, and his job which he needs to pay for his tuition. He is pursuing his dreams but most of the times it seems like his dreams will never materialise. At his job as a waiter in a restaurant is where he first encounters Claire and her friends.
From the start their attraction to each other was instant however with the rudeness of her friends Nick didn’t hold out any hope for anything. After all Claire was way out of his league. When a one night stand leads to several dates in secret the pair decide they can’t hiding their relationship from others. But what will be the consequences of making their relationship public? Will people’s criticisms of their different backgrounds make it hard for their relationship to succeed? And what happens as their story progresses? Will they find what they are searching for together or will they need to be apart to succeed?
This was a unique turn of the female being the wealthy partner where as most times its the men so that was a nice change. Claire is also a very down to earth character, she doesn’t flaunt her wealth or look down on people which I loved about her. Both of our main characters have flaws which make the human and relatable. This is a fast paced read which I couldn’t put down.
What a lovely rom-com story of two unexpected people crossing paths. Claire is an heiress and most people just see the pretty face, not the brains behind it. Nick is a waiter and going to art school, that is if he doesn’t lose his grad school scholarship. The two cross paths, they live in totally different worlds and don’t think that they can cross the social line. So of course they start a friendship and a secret fling. There are many books with one rich and one poor character out there and I liked that it wasn’t the stereotypical rich man! The author did a great job making the characters real and relatable. I was hanging on and flipping the pages hoping for the happily ever after. I will be looking to see if this author has more to read!
Nick – the art student – and Claire – the former model, socialite, and business woman – make quite the unexpected pair. The question is, can their instant connection withstand both of their insecurities? This book was a fast-paced, lovable story of two mismatched people that find themselves in an interesting situation. I really enjoyed the book and was rooting for these two to take the leap and commit to what could be. Unexpected, was just that, two people crossing paths in unexpected ways and having an unexpected connection. Read this book to see how it ends!
This is the first book I have read from this author and now she has a new fan. I love a good romance but this story exceeded my expectations. I could not help but to fall in love with these characters. I could not put this book down until I read it all. It only took me a few hours to devour this incredible story.
Claire Morgan knows how to live her life in the spotlight. She is known for the ditzy heiress but no one knows her true self. Claire is smart with a business and computer technology degree. She and her girls go into a restaurant to have some fun. Claire meets their waiter Nick and she can’t seem to figure out what feeling she has for him. She gets to know him and the sparks start to fly. Will Claire finally find her Mr Right or will her life be too much for him? Review by @heatherbass
What an emotional rollercoaster. I can’t believe that Claire and Nick finally are able to express their feelings and then, ugh!!! It was not nice to do that to a person.
Claire is many things, daughter, friend, former model, daughter of a tech magnate, business woman and lost. Claire wants to do so much with her position at her father’s company but he consistently tells her that she doesn’t have to and that no one expects that of her. But Claire is smart, driven, ambitious and wants so much more than what is expected of her.
Nick is a struggling art student. He works, he attends his classes, he paints, he is also stuck. What he loves to paint, landscapes, won’t bring him fame and fortune, but that is what he really wants out of his art career. Nick wants to be known and respected in the art world. He can’t really seem to impress the professors and critics at school and is close to quitting it all.
One night while working as a waiter, Nick comes face to face with Claire and her group of friends. The friends are dismissive and rude to him. Nick is just the waiter, after all. After being curt to Claire, Nick finds himself in a hotel room with her. After their one night together, Nick gives Claire his phone number. He never expects her to use it. She never plans on using it. Until she does.
Clair and Nick met up occasionally for the next year, slowly building a friendship and a relationship out of their series of hookups. When Nick takes Claire camping for the weekend, they realize that they love each other. Nick feels that he isn’t good enough for Claire because he is just a poor art student. Claire doesn’t feel that way but she knows love never lasts anyways, so she lets him walk away. Can that be all? Will they each move on? Will they find what they are looking for separately before finding it together? The ride will end with you safe back at the station but hold on getting there!

This was a great 5 star read. I really enjoyed this story and the characters were great. Claire is a misunderstood heiress. She is a very smart woman but hides it from the public. When she meets Nick there is an instant connection. Nick has his own struggles he is working through. Will their relationship be a fling or will it take a deeper turn? This story flows so well and I was done before I knew it. The author does a great job of pulling you in with her writing. I look forward to reading more from her. 1-click and get started today.
Unexpected by Laylah Abrams. I truly loved this modern day twist romance. Its the story of Claire Morgan who is a heiress and she has a fake social profile. She is not the air headed, shallow girl that she leads people to believe she is. Nick Holden is a struggling artist/waiter who is trying not to lose his scholarship. When he and Claire meet they don’t think they could ever have a future together because of their vastly different backgrounds. They have so much in common though and the more time they spend together the more they realize they enjoy each other’s company. Nick encourages Claire to enter the tech world she so desperately wants to and Claire helps Nick to beat his artistic slump. They are so good for each other. Will they be able to make their relationship last and go against the society rules? Read this fun romance to find out!
‘Unexpected’ is the first novel that I have read by Layah Abrams and it will not be my last – I will certainly be looking up her other books and adding them to my list.
Unexpected completely lived up to its name and turned into a page turning romance that kept me up until the wee hours to finish it. Unlike most romance novels this book is written from the male viewpoint. Nicholas (Nick) Holden is a struggling artist working as a waiter when he meets the famous model Claire Morgan.
They have an affair of sorts but slowly they fall in love – but forbidden love with no happy ever after in sight.
Nick goes on the become a famous new talent artist and suddenly feels worthy of Claire but he still needs to convinced her that their love is real and they can be happy together.
Claire Morgan has perfected a fake, social personality that she shares with the world at large. She doesn’t have many true friends, and inside she is dying a slow death that no one sees. Nick Holden is struggling to become an artist. His mom is the only one who believes in him and he’s slowly losing hope that he truly can accomplish his dream. One chance evening, the two meet across a restaurant table. Literally. He’s the waiter and she’s the socialite at dinner with her famous friends. They both surprise each other by seeing through the other’s facade. Can they find a way to be together when their worlds are so completely different? Or will the chasm of class keep their love from becoming a reality?
This was a fun read for me. I truly enjoyed the story! The author did a wonderful job of capturing each of the characters vulnerabilities and expressing it well through words. Even though I could not identify with being a rich heiress, I could identify with her feelings of not being good enough and not believing in herself but able to encourage others. Her heartbreak was all too relatable. I felt drawn into the story and didn’t want to put it down until I knew how it all ended. Good read!
Interesting story as we follow along with Nick and Claire. Both of them are so easy to read and guess what they are thinking most of the time. She is high class and he is low class so they nothing feel nothing can come of their dalliance. We really get to know them both so well. Secondary characters are fleeting and only her BFF is briefly memorable as the story focuses solely on the two main. I read this fairly quickly and the story flowed nicely. The epilogue rounds everything out nicely.

A fun, contemporary read of a modern day fairytale romance between two totally opposite people. However, we all know the saying, opposites attract! When wealthy celebrity heiress Claire meets down-on-his-luck and on his last penny Nick, their worlds collide in ways that no one would ever see coming. Full of drama, a little smidge of humor, and some angst, this book is sure to keep you interested from word one until done!

Unexpected by Layla Abrams is an opposite attracts, modern-day romance. Claire Morgan is an heiress who is far from the shallow air-head that she lets people believe she is. Nick Holden is a waiter/struggling artist who is about to lose his scholarship. These two feel that they have no future because of their class difference but act on their attraction anyway. Of course, there is more to them than the physical and now they must work backwards to see if they can make things work. I enjoyed this story. This is a reverse situation of the rich /poor dynamic and it is very interesting to see. The characters had great chemistry and it was fun watching them make things work. The inspiration and impact that they had on each other was wonderful. The story is very well-written and I found myself not wanting to put the book down. This was a fun twist on an old fairytale classic dynamic.

This was my 1st read by this author, and I was not let down. What a great story. She takes the so often used “rich man/poor woman” and role reverses it. Both the characters are smart and talented, and guarded. I feel like neither of them really think, at least at first, that this is anything real. But the way the author writes this amazing story. I just could not put it down. Such a great world to get lost in. I never wanted to leave, and I’ll absolutely be visiting again!

Laylah Abrams’ Unexpected follows famous Clair Morgan, who falls in love with waiter/artist Nick Holden. Despite their completely different backgrounds, they have more in common than either of them would have thought, and they’re the only people who see each other for who they truly are. They’re also both insecure for wildly different reasons, and keeping their relationship a secret doesn’t help with that. My favourite character was Clair, because despite being rich, she’s really relatable. She works hard but is never taken seriously, and she’s scared to let her guard down. I recommend this book because it’s a beautiful romance between two unlikely love interests, but you can really see why they love each other despite their differences. I cried at the ending; happy tears. ‘In a world full of tabloids and masks, they had found something pure and gleaming and were going to bury it again.’
Unexpected by Laylah Abrams is a modern-day fairytale contemporary romance. Having not read anything by this author before and I was interested to see what she brought to the table. I was not disappointed. This fun tale has a bit of everything that you need to make it an enjoyable read. With a little drama, a touch of angst, a smattering of longing, a bit of humour and everything in between this tale will draw you into the journey. There was some pouting, some heavy sighs and some laughter as I turned the pages. I had to know how it ended for these two star crossed lovers. UNEXPECTED of two people who could not be more different and live in totally different worlds. The wonderful characters are well written and make you feel like you have a connection with them and all their troubles, wants and needs. Claire has brains and beauty, but brains apparently don’t mean much when you are an heiress. All they see is wealth and pomp but not truly the girl underneath it all. Like all artists Nick is in a funk but that is about to change when he crosses paths with a beautiful woman. Can two people from different worlds find more than they ever thought? To find out you will have to give it a read.
4.5/5 stars This was my first read by this author and it was a great introduction to her work. Where most authors usually make the rich character the man, this book actually has the woman as the wealthy one. This author does a great job of drawing your attention and keeping you intrigued. This was a great book and I enjoyed it.

This is FANTASTIC and I read it in one sitting. This book takes the familiar tale of one character being wealthy and one living in poverty and flips it on its head. In this story the wealthy one is the female. However, this is not done in an over the top or in your face way, in this story it all just makes sense. The question this story explores is what happens when two characters let go of what holds them back and really become who they are meant to be. Claire is a fantastic main character who challenges the ideas of what a wealthy female main character should be. She is a model, however, she has way more brains than beauty. The only problem is that no one can look past her exterior. And in some ways, that is the way she wants it, because she doesn’t really want the public to know the real her. That all changes when she meets Nick. Nick is a waiter and she definitely is interested in him. However, he is not at all what she thought she would fall in love with. Nick on the other hand fully expected everything to be a fling, but when it continues he finds that it is causing changes to his future in art. These characters are so well written and are so flawed. But I love a really well written flawed character, because who among us isn’t flawed. This plot moves along at a good pace and this is a book that kept me reading way past my bedtime. This was the first book I have read by Laylah Abrams, but it definitely won’t be my last. Her ability to create characters is something that I find myself wanting even more of. I definitely recommend taking the time to read this fantastic story.
Unexpected by Laylah Abrams turned out to be quite the unexpected read- in a great way. With such an unassuming, although somewhat charming cover, I really didn’t know what to expect – but the blurb sounded promising, so I snapped up a copy and set off to explore. What I discovered was a fun story with a bit of a fairytale-esque vibe to it. With plenty to keep me flipping the pages of this feel-good romance. -Celebrity heiress meets waiter/struggling artist ✔ -Different worlds collide ✔ -Opposites attract ✔ -finding love unexpectedly ✔ -Sweet story ✔ -chemistry ✔ -Character growth and development continues over the course of the story ✔ -a dash of drama ✔ -a sprinkle of angst ✔ -Light-hearted ✔ -Memorable ✔ This is my first read by Ms. Abrams, but after enjoying this story more than I expected, it certainly won’t be my last. Looking forward to seeing what Ms. Abrams does next. Happy Reading…

How many romances have we read where one character is wealthy and one is living in poverty? How many of those are the billionaire male and the struggling female? Well Unexpected is the story mentioned in the first question, but the roles in the 2nd question are reversed. The author put together a sweet heartbreaking story of two people who see one another but let things hold them back from who they truly are. The growth displayed within the 2 main characters was frustrating at times and beautiful at others. Claire is a socialite that wishes to be more than a pretty face. A former model who has extensive business zeal and knowledge in engineering & programming, but no one sees it. They see what she wants them to see. The many masks she uses to navigate a very publicized life. Thanks to the paparazzi. That is until she meets Nick, her waiter, a one off stranger. Yet this stranger can see right through her masks to who she truly is. Well at least the parts she will share. She wants him but could she ever really have him as more than just a fling. He’s an artist that is below her social standing, but she doesn’t want to let him go. Nick never expected Claire to ever show an interest in him. What started as a fling turned out to be a lot more. With a fear of losing his grad school scholarship due to his lack of/confusing paintings feelings. Claire’s presence in his life even as a random night here and random night there has had a profound impact on his work. She’s his muse. He’s taking risks, using bold colors and strokes, and not being as precise and detailed as previously perfect his landscapes used to be. And those higher ups/visitors at school are starting to notice. However the social standing between the two of them is a glaring fact, that’s staring them in the face. Can they get past it? Will they finally admit how they truly feel about one another? So many questions and plenty of answers. No romance is ever just pretty with no conflict. It’s how the conflict is handled that determines the outcome. The conflict in this one is heartbreaking because you as the reader want these two to defy the odds, you’re rooting for them.. And the need to continue to see what happens will have you saying “just one more chapter” when you have something to do and should be going to bed. Me, well I’m going to be looking for other works by this author. You will be making sure you carve out a window to read the book in one shot. Because you won’t want to put it down. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
This was an enjoyable and engaging romance with a modern fairytale feel to it which kept me happily turning the pages. Claire Morgan is a Celebutante who plays the air-headed-heiress that the gossip sites expect, to perfection. People are much more interested in her designer gowns and love life, then they are about her degrees in business and computer science. Nick is a struggling artist who works as a waiter and who’s worrying that his grad school scholarship is in jeopardy, due to his creative slump. Claire and Nick meet when Claire and her friends arrive at the restaurant where Nick works, at closing time. The pair discover they have a lot in common and they start what they thought, would be a meaningless fling. Nick spurs Claire towards the tech career she’s always wanted and she inspires his art. However, they are both too good at putting on an act and at hiding their growing feelings, and will need to trust in one another if there relationship is to develop and last. I loved the chemistry between Nick and Claire, and how their relationship developed throughout the story. The storyline flowed well and I found this to be a heartwarming and entertaining romance.

Well, this was an expected romantic treat. I thought Claire was just another spoiled celebrity when I started this. It turns out that there is fa more to her than people give her credit for, even her family. She has multiple degrees and is a pretty smart cookie. One night at dinner with Candie, she meets Nick. He’s cute, also a smarty guy. He’s very creative and an artist. These two are from two different sides of the track. Watching this develop was painful at times but necessary to the story. It kind of felt like “don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” I enjoyed the story because you did get to see them grow up and mature into what they wanted, forget the paparazzi.. I felt the characters were fairly well-developed. The storyline was good.
