A Stranger in Disguise (A Commissario Scala Mystery in Rome) by P.J. Mann – Review by Kirsten Berkebile

This is book 4 in the Italian Murder Mystery series.  This book was inspired by a real case that happened in Italy. It’s the first book by P.J. Mann that I have read, so I will be reading the full series soon. I was intrigued by the title of this book and that its similar to an actual murder that happened. While I like the start of the story, I felt rather bounced around towards the middle of the story. I feel like there are too many characters and not enough mystery/action happening. I might just give it another go and try to reread it later. The characters themselves were intriguing to me, their names sound like foreign and yet similar at the same time.

This book takes place in Rome which is pretty cool! It was my first book in the series and I enjoyed it. I’ll probably go back and read the first 3 books, but it’s not a necessity. This book has so many twists and turns that I read eagerly waiting for the next page. It was an easy, but interesting read!

A Stranger in Disguise is book #4 in this series, but I was easily able to read it as a stand-alone. A brilliantly written murder mystery, set in Rome, Italy, and centered around an acting group and the cursed performance of Macbeth….this caught my attention straight away! An actor from a foreign acting performance winds up dead, and Detective Maurizio Scala is given the case. The case, at first, seems very open and closed. The initial suspect, who was last seen on surveillance with the deceased actor, seems the obvious candidate. That is, until they also turn up dead. What started as a simple case turns into a very complex and different case entirely. Now the well versed detective must step into one of his least favorite places…the theatre…and get the answers before more bodies turn up. This murder mystery is full of plot twists and turns, realistic banter between the detective team, and a lead character that simply does not give up.

A stranger in disguise…. the title is what truly piqued my interest. I didn’t know when I picked up the book that it was part of a series…as a matter of fact it is book #4 in the series! I read this book as a stand-alone book, and it didn’t disappoint at all, I actually plan to go back and read the other 3 book at some point in time. This story is centered around multiple murdered bodies as an actors’ troupe is set to perform the cursed play, Macbeth. I mean come on…Macbeth…nothing good ever comes from the play Macbeth!

This book was a fast read, yet very interesting. I have never read anything from P.J. Mann, and I will say that I wasn’t disappointed! The author had a great way of leaving enough hints to keep you hooked, but not too much to where you figured out the mystery! There were plenty of twists and turns in this book and it kept you wanting more!
The banter was another cool thing, P.J. kept the book original by introducing how you think the banter would be…especially between Inspector Scala and his colleagues, to me this was highly realistic! There were times when I felt like I was also a detective working right beside them trying to solve the mysteries! I don’t think that anyone will be disappointed reading this book!

A winding and twisting murder mystery set in Rome that is refreshing and plenty murderous. This book has plenty of winding paths and a plot that leads the disgruntled detective through a place they’re not a true lover of – the theatre. A play that is already known for a curse is plagued by one more, and Detective Maurizio Scala must learn to play the part to crack this case. Good read.

A Stranger in Disguise by P.J. Mann is a fast-paced Italian murder mystery. This is the fourth book in the Commissario Series and is fully able to be read as a standalone. Though there is some switching of point of views, we mainly follow Commissario Scala as he tries to uncover the truth behind the bodies dropping in a traveling tropue of actors. We quickly discover they were brought to Italy to save a failing theatre by performing the cursed play, Macbeth. However things take a sharp turn when the normal curse of things going bad turns to a woman found murdered and an actor missing. This twisting story will keep you up all weekend untangling the mystery!

As the title of my review states I didn’t realize this was a series, let alone the fourth book. With that being said I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything. A Romanian actors’ troupe is in Italy to help a floundering theater by putting on the play, Macbeth. Of course every actor and actress knows that the play itself is cursed, but this acting company tries to shed all the eerieness and rumors surrounding the play until strange things start to happen. Maybe the curse of Macbeth is truly with them when one of their own is discovered deceased. Detective Scala and his partner have a mystery on their hands as they start to dig and find that the deceased is not who she was thought to be. But who wanted her dead and why? I enjoyed reading this book and it kept me guessing until the end. The twists and turns the story took in sorting out the life on the victim kept me turning the pages. If you like a good who dunnit this is a good book to add to your collection.

A Stranger in Disguise: An Italian Murder Mystery (A Commissario Scala Mystery in Rome)A Stranger in Disguise: An Italian Murder Mystery by P. J. Mann
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A foreign acting company has come to Rome to put on a play to raise funds for a crumbling old theatre when suddenly one of their actors winds up dead. Detective Scala ends up with the task of solving the murder which initially seems easy enough. The last person to see the victim becomes the prime suspect who just happens to have been caught on surveillance leaving the area at the same time as the murder. The disappearance of the prime suspect makes them look even more guilty until their body is also discovered. Detective Scala now figures that there must be more to the case than initially suspected and starts to dig farther. As he digs farther into the life of the victim he learns that she had her own deep, dark secrets. It is up to Detective Scala to figure out what the victim’s secrets were before more innocent lives are lost.

This murder mystery was brilliantly written, and I was in awe of the determination Detective Scala had to solve the case. He really sunk his teeth into the mystery and would not let go until the case was solved. The more Detective Scala looked into the murders the more layers of the proverbial onion he was able to peel back. The case turned out to be far more complex and involved than he originally thought but it only made Detective Scala work harder to uncover the truth. He was hyper focused, determined, hardworking, diligent, and smart. Detective Scala is the type of person you would want to have on your side. A great book full of action, suspense, mystery, intrigue, and a few twists and turns that will take you by surprise!

This is the 4th book in the Inspector Scala Mystery series. Thankfully these books can be read as standalone books as i haven’t read the previous 3 books yet. This book was a gripping murder mystery, full of twists and turns that keep you guessing from beginning to end.
The story contains many secrets and lies and people who aren’t who they make themselves out to be. Add to this the curse of Macbeth and it all added to a story you won’t be able to put down.
We start with a theatre company hired to put on a show of Macbeth but when one of the members of the acting company turns up dead it is up to Inspector Scala to solve the case and find the killer. After initially thinking the last known person was the suspect the Inspector soon realises just how wrong that assumption is and as the victims life starts to become more clearer secrets start to emerge which I didn’t see coming.
If you love gripping murder Mystery with characters that are complex then this is definately a book for you.

They can be read as standalone but they are much better read in order. This book is set in Rome, Italy and is about Detective Maurizio Scala and his case of the murder of a costume designer of a foreign acting troupe. The play they are performing is Macbeth and they are hoping it will help this failing theatre. What seems like a normal case ends up opening all kinds of problems. The victim of the murder ended up not being who they thought he was and was an actual criminal himself. As they case turns up all kinds of lies and more mysteries Scala wonders if he’s in over his head. Will he be able to solve the crimes before more murders occur? Read this fast paced mystery to find out!

A Stranger in Disguise (A Commissario Scala Mystery in Rome) by P.J. Mann – Review by Nicole Thompson

If you’re looking for a mystery thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end, P.J. Mann’s A Stranger in Disguise is a must-read. The book is written in English but is set in Italy, and the author’s use of language hints that they may be more familiar with a different language, but this does not take away from the book’s readability. The story follows Detective Maurizio Scala as he investigates the murder of a costume maker for a foreign acting group in Rome, Italy. At first, it seems like a straightforward case, but soon reveals itself to be more complicated than it first appeared. Detective Scala finds himself embroiled in a web of lies, deceit, drugs, and murder, as he discovers the victim’s ties to a bank robbery and the Romania mafia. If you’re a fan of thrillers, you won’t want to miss out on A Stranger in Disguise!

Even though this is #4 as a series, I read it as a standalone, and now I want to go back and read the first three. The story centers around multiple murdered bodies as an actors’ troupe is set to perform the cursed play, Macbeth.

As Macbeth himself says, “If it were done when ’tis done, then ’t were well
It were done quickly”- I found the book a fast read, yet intriguing. The author, P.J. Mann, does an excellent job dropping enough hints to help you solve the mystery of the murder yourself, without hitting you over the head being obvious. Enough twists and turns to keep it interesting, and if I wasn’t such a well read mystery reader, I might have solved it before Inspector Scala.

I found the banter between Inspector Scala and his colleagues to be refreshing and highly realistic- I thought I was a fellow detective working along side him. The author also characterizes the suspects well- reminds me a lot of Donna Leon’s writing, which is a high compliment. I also enjoyed the inclusion of every day nuisances like traffic refreshing because even the police have similar irks as civilians!

As a side note, while reading this, I assumed the author was male, because PJ Mann illustrates the camaraderie and banter among the male police squad spot on.

This was an amazing murder mystery story. It was so well written and well thought out that there were times that I felt like I was right there in the story myself. I haven’t read any other book in this series, but I can say that this book was great by itself, I was not confused or lost because it was so amazing that this can be read on its own. But I can assure you I will be reading more. It was very fast paced, suspense, action filled, twists and turns, gripping book that I couldn’t put it down and had to read it as fast as I could to know what Detective Maurizio was going to do or handle the situation next. This book is just a wonderful read and amazing all around, highly recommend.

This book is part of a series, but a great stand-alone read. This is a classic who-done-it and it has mysteries within the mystery. The characters are well- developed, and the plot moves along at a good pace. I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes a good, clean, book in which the author does not have to resort to sordid details (that is the plot device of a poor story). This is an excellent mystery, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the characters.

I enjoyed trying to work out how it was going to turn out. There was an interesting mix of characters to compliment the storyline and everything as a whole seemed to work well.
I also really enjoyed that the book was set in Rome. It felt different to the usual American/English settings. This is still a pretty new author to me but if this is an example of what her books will be like, I can’t wait to read more.

Fans of Macbeth and crime/suspense stories will find this novel set in Rome, Italy to be intriguing.

A theatre troupe has been commissioned to perform the dreadful play Macbeth in a failing theatre. Anyone familiar with the story knows that bad things tend to happen to anyone involved in the production. A double murder does take place and it’s up to Detective Scala and his team to solve it.

Long hours, stakeouts, interviews, etc. all take place to come to the bottom of whodunit in this fourth book in the Detective Scala series. I was unaware that this was a series and read this book as a standalone without feeling like I had missed any previous information. I did find this book slightly slow in reading. Maybe it’s because I’ve been glued to the tv watching a high profile murder case that just wrapped up today.

This book is written in English, but is set in Italy, and some of the grammar makes me think the author is more familiar with a different language. This in NO way makes the book unreadable, just seems like valuable information for readers who may have issues with this sort of style.

This book was very well written, and kept me guessing until the very end. What at first seems like a straightforward case soon reveals itself to be more complicated. The victim, who at first is thought to just be a part of the acting group, is in fact a part of a bank robbery that had taken place many years ago, and had ties to the Romania mafia. This is a gripping crime mystery story full of suspense, which had me hooked from start to finish. The Detective believes the last person to see the victim is a suspect, but then later fears he has a killer on his hands when she’s found by the river dead. As Detective Scala investigates he discovers that the apparent simple life of the victim is actually very complex. As more secrets emerge the Detective must stop the killer before they strike again. A thrilling whodunit, this is actually book four in a series, but I easily read it as a standalone story, however having been introduced to the Detective, I’m intrigued to read the rest of the series. The characters and setting came alive through the detailed descriptive narrative, and the plot twists kept me guessing as to the outcome of the story. An entertaining and engaging read, which I recommend.

A Stranger in Disguise is the fourth book in the Inspector Scala Mystery series by P.J. Mann. I hadn’t read any of Ms. Mann’s books before, but I love a gripping read, so I was intrigued by what I would find here. What I discovered is a well-woven and suspenseful crime & investigation whodunit mystery- with murder, police procedure, drama, twists, secrets, and tension.
This mystery is set in Rome, adding an extra element of interest to the whole story. With the staging of a cursed play comes murder and intrigue. We join the investigation following our stubborn detective as he endeavours to get to the bottom of it all. But with the body count mounting the case becomes more complex. What happens makes for an engaging read.
I will definitely be going back to read the first three books, before continuing with the rest of the series.
Happy reading…

Thank you, P.J. Mann!

A Stranger in Disguise is set in the beautiful city of Rome, Italy. P.J. is a new author to me and I was pleasantly surprised. It is also the fourth book in the Inspector Scala Mystery series. Unfortunately I was not aware this is the fourth book but I didn’t feel like I had missed anything. I will however be going back to start at the beginning because I like a good thrilling mystery.
Detective Maurizio Scala is once again on the case. He discovers there is more to the murder victim than he first realised. But to make matters worse this case is in a theatre and one of his least favourite places.

This is the fourth book in the Inspector Scala Mystery Series. Don’t let that deter your from reading this book, because I have not read any of the others and I completely understood what was happening. But I will definitely be going back to read the others because I enjoyed this one so much!
This book features an acting company that is in a foreign land and is performing MacBeth. Everyone knows this play is known to be cursed. The actors definitely are trying to shake it off as rumors but weird things start happening. Then a cast member ends up dead. This is where Inspector Scala shows up. What he discovers is that the victim is not necessarily a simple actor, her life is far more complicated than anyone ever thought.
I truly enjoyed the twists and turns that were in this book. It kept me guessing for sure! I definitely recommend this great mystery.

Rome, Italy. Detective Maurizio Scala isn’t a fan of the theater. However, he will have to win his reluctance when a case comes to his desk. The member of a foreign acting company was brutally murdered, and the detective is quick to take center stage.

Diving into the case, he targets a suspect who last saw the victim—and then disappeared. But when he discovers her body by the river, he fears he has a killer on his hands who’s just getting started.

A deeper investigation by the stubborn sleuth reveals the complexity beneath the apparent simple life of the victim. What was she hiding?

Will detective Scala reveal the secrets and stop the killer before more innocents meet their fate?
