When Magic Calls by Caitlin Berve- 4 out of 5 stars

Interesting take on Fairy Tales. The author gives these tales a magical twist intermixed with some darkness. I love how you can pick this book up, read one short story, and put it back down without feeling like you are left on a cliff. Each story is uniquely written and enjoyable, even for adult readers. This authors idea of a Fairy Tale museum is definitely unique. I recommend this book if you like quick reads.

This complex read will have you in your emotions the whole time. Claire’s mother puts her in an extremely difficult position, being her baby brother’s full time caretaker. Although she resents her mother, her fierce love for her baby brother is unrelenting and she does everything she can to provide for him. This book definitely puts poor Claire through the ringer. As a mother, I was heartbroken and wanted to help her. As a reader, I was all over the place emotionally and I could not put it down.
Overall, this was an amazing YA book. I highly recommend!

This is the 4th book within the series, so definitely should read previous books to be able to follow along better.
The story is based upon a duchess who is struggling with her family due to her live interest. He is a prince but also an acolyte. There has been lies spread throughout. But can they get through all the hard times and make their love work? I definitely am going to go and read the rest of this series!

The book was a little slow in the beginning. But we follow along with Rebecca discovering her sexual needs. She feels like she is broken due to her past ex’s. They would say some very rude things, and didn’t know it started affecting her until after she split from Ethan. Her neighbor Bessie has her nephew Kyle move in to help her. Rebecca goes through different therapies to help. Rebecca and Kyle have lots of ups and downs. I truely was not expecting this to turn into a cute romance but I was so suprised! It’s such an amazing read I can’t wait for book 2!! This book was so fantastic, please go read this!!

How to Catch Little Boys and Eat Them by Lois Wickstrom – Review by Tanya Wall, July 2023

How to Catch Little Boys and Eat ThemHow to Catch Little Boys and Eat Them by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a story all about Jack and how he outsmarts the giant in the sky. It is a very interesting take on Jack and the Beanstalk. The illustrations are cute. I enjoyed how Jack turned on the giant – by tricking him, using his problem solving abilities to get himself out of a sticky situation. Cute story to read a loud ot your littles – would prompt good discussion in a classroom about right vrs. wrong.

How to catch little boys and eat them by Lois Wickstrom- 3 out of 5 stars

Similar to the classic fairytale Jack and the Bean Stalk but with a twist. The clever giant devises a plan to catch a boy and eat him while advertising his method to other giants via an infomercial to make money. The giant’s plan was going as planned when the boy’s curiosity took him up the bean stalk. The first time was pure curiosity but the many times after was greed. The boy had stealing items from the giant’s house to make money. Since the boy was never caught, he felt comfortable returning to steal more. The giant revealed that he had set up the boy and he was trapped. The boys quick witts saved him in the end when he was able to convince the giant to let him go.
I was personally not a big fan of this book. I did like that the author kept some key items from the classic fairytale but I find it to be very greed driven. I don’t really think the message of the story was portrayed in a positive way.

Forbidden Blood by C.R. Robertson- 5 out of 5 stars

Forbidden Blood is the fourth installment of The Shadow Chronicles. That being said, this is the first installment I have read. Not only is this book fast-paced, action-packed, and drool worthy but it also functioned great as a stand alone! I had a hard time putting it down.
Kimber’s life became a whirlwind of new possibilities when a mystery man entered her life. She had been treated as a weapon and kept captive for years. Fabian showed her compassion and understanding as her powers grew day by the day. He was the only person who had ever believed in her. He made her feel safe while encouraging Kimber to reach her full powerful potential.
I loved it!

Reading this book gave me all sorts of emotions. First and foremost, at the beginning I did not like Wyatt at all. I just couldn’t get behind him and felt like this book was going to drag on because of it. However, that is not what happened. I actually read this book pretty quickly and got over my dislike for Wyatt throughout the book. He has some redeeming qualities that only Serena and his team mates can help him find and figure out. In this book Serena has a job that requires her creative thinking and always seeming to be on call to handle any bad situation that the team comes across. This sounds like a draining job to me but the way it is written makes me think that maybe in another lifetime I should do this. She deals with a lot in this book not just professional but personally as well. This is where we get to see the character growth of Wyatt in the book. He steps up and helps Serena. This book has a lot to offer the reader. It has the slow burn romance, the character growth and development, the page turning urgency, and it is a quick read that leaves you feeling good after you finish it.

This book is an amusing quick read. It sets you up for the new series and gives you a glimpse of what is to come. It draws you in from the start and doesn’t let you go even when it finishes. This book has me wanting more and more. The writing grips your attention and the story line keeps you turning pages. This book also kinda piggy backs iff of the Elite Series by this author. It deals with the siblings that have been around but not prominent and now they are. If you like everything tied up with a pretty bow then this not the book to read at the moment. You will want to wait till you have time to read the next book as you are left with a cliffhanger. I am normally not a fan of those but this book just spoke to me and I can’t wait to see what happens. This is a must-read for anyone and especially those that have read the Elite Series.

This book brought forth a range of emotions, some were not so pleasant. I believe this author has a great deal of writing potential as she grows her following. The storyline deals with dark subjects that can be very sensitive to readers but I feel it is respectfully written. The Finding has it’s fair share of twists and turns as the main character’s reunite years after Victoria’s stepdad sold her to a cartel. All in all, the plot was great.

This cute book gives a more functional approach to a classic fairytale. Goldilocks finds herself wandering into the three bears home just like the classic. While she was there she cames across a few things that needed fixed, so she fixed them. While fixing said items Goldilocks uses six simple machines to get the jobs done. This is a great way to get children to both enjoy a book and learn some fundamental skills.

Prissy’s deep seeded determination for revenge after she was attacked, puts her face to face with a blast from her past. Riordan, her old crush and the man that saved her life all those years ago. This Mafia romance had me flipping the page for more. Danger, drama, suspense, forced marriage, and lots of steam. What more could you ask for.
I am giving this book 4 stars because there were parts that were a bit difficult for me to read. Other then that, I appreciated the character development.

Brutal Nights (Hidden Valley Elite #4)Brutal Nights by Isla Vaughn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book took me through it. It is the continuation of Sky and Damon’s story and you won’t be disappointed with it at all. I love the angst that is Brough forth in this book. It has some amazing character development. I really thought that Damon had growth before but this book makes him turn into something amazing. He digs deep to figure out what he wants and how to get it. He has pure determination to go full steam ahead. Sky is trying to do what she thinks is right and almost makes herself a verbal punching bag for Gia. It is crazy. However, that said, if she didn’t do this, I don’t think the book would be nearly as good as it was. Yes, I got frustrated because, seriously, she didn’t need to be a doormat and stay away from Damon. However, that brought on a layer of tension and angst that I didn’t know I needed. The push and pull of these two make this book a page turner. It was such a quick read because I couldn’t put it down. It has everything that you have come to expect from this author in her stories, the passion, angst, character growth, being able to keep up with other characters in the earlier books, etc. If you haven’t started reading this series yet, you must it is amazing and you will be entertained for hours on end because, you will want to keep reading all the books in the series.

Falling Again (Buckeye Falls Book 3) by Libby Kay – Review by Jaimie Salmon-Colburn

Falling AgainFalling Again by Libby Kay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Such a wonderful series so far!! I can’t wait to read more of it!! This is book 3 to the Buckeye Falls Series and boy oh boy are you in for it with this one! I cried a couple times for these characters. Anthony and Natalie have the picture perfect life and family. He’s the Mayor of Buckeye Falls and she runs her own event planning company with one of her best friends. Life is perfect. Or is it? From the outside everything seems great, but on the inside the couple isn’t doing well. Between two full time jobs, two kids, and everything in between work and home they’ve been drifting apart. Between Anthony trying to fill the big shoes of his father (the last mayor) and Natalie trying to be everything for everyone, the two of them lead very crazy lives and schedules. Both feel guilt of not doing better. Not being better. But can the couple come together and work things out? Or is this the end of their seemingly perfect relationship? When Anthony’s father asks the couple to pack up, clean, and get the family lake house ready for sale the couple jumps at the chance for a week away from everything. With the kids safely with their aunt with grandma there for backup, the two take off. Can the two put work and life away for a week and work things out while they pack? Or will this week away confirm their fears of growing apart in life. I won’t give anything away, but let me tell you that this couple has some ups and downs in this book. Sometimes over simple things that make you want to smack them both and lock them in a room until they work stuff out. Such a wonderful book that had me crying and thinking about some of my own relationships with family and friends. Check this sweet romance out! You CAN read this book as a stand alone, but I wouldn’t recommend it. The previous two books introduce you to the town and many of the characters that you will see in this book. So personally I would say read all three in order for a better reading experience with this series.

I think that Damon is now my favorite MMC in this series. He puts on a hard exterior, especially when it comes to making a bargain with Sky to help her best friend Gia. But in reality, he’s a big cinnamon roll for Sky. I really liked Sky, with her sass, snark, and loyalty. Having picked up right where we left off at the end of Brutal Days, this installment of the Hidden Valley Elite moves quickly, leading up to the HEA you are rooting for with this couple.

First I really enjoyed how there was a page just for terminology being used in the book, so you could refer back to what words or sayings mean.
Love the fact that it takes place in New Orleans, and that it feels more like an old vampire story. This is a love story of Caitlin and Gage (or Evariste) that has spanned for centuries.
Caitlin is an independent woman, she works for her guardian. Gage is a grouchy businessman. He believes Caitlin is his dead wife come back to life. You follow the story through, you get to meet death, and Lilith, four horseman. There’s so many wonderful characters. Caitlin is a bada** who goes through centuries of find her love, loosing him. A family battle that has also spawned for centuries. I LOVE this book!!

Man oh man, are you in for a treat with this book! This book had a wonderful and interesting twist when it came to the whole story. I didn’t want to put it down! I had to force myself to go to bed more than once, otherwise I would have stayed up all night reading. Again. Lol. I loved the way the author wrote this book. It’s another take on Immortal Creatures and I just wanted more and more of it. Evariste (aka Gage) is a three hundred year old cursed immortal. His curse started when he lost his wife all those years ago and it’s been plaguing him and his family who were cursed right along with him. He feels the guilt of it all every single day. He throws himself into work, cooking, and fishing. He loves his family and his company, but he doesn’t know all the secrets and lies behind his own life. Caitlin (aka Cate) is on overload. She was recently dumped over a promotion. She is overworked and totally burnt out. Over all, her life is a big old mess right now. Looking forward to a much needed vacation to New Orleans has her hopeful for the much needed time off and away. But of course her boss throws her plans askew. He talks her into staying longer so she can check out a company while she’s on her vacation. Just a small routine background investigation is all it’s supposed to be. But with her luck and how her life is right now, of course it turns out to be way more than what it seemed. She’s forced into the world of Gage’s and his business. When they meet Gage can’t believe his eyes. Or her eyes!! The uniqueness of them stops him in his tracks. He knows them. He can’t help but be drawn to them and her. Can he trust what he sees? Keeping her close so that he can try to spark up some old memories, has him dangling an unwelcomed business proposition up in the air just to keep her around longer. Work won’t keep his quilt at bay when he’s starting into the eyes of his past. Grab this book NOW to read how this story turns out. I don’t want to give anything away, but it’s so good!!! You will not be disappointed at all by this read. Except maybe wanting more like I did! I can’t wait for more from this author!

A Way Out (Rock Star Book 2)A Way Out by Tami Lund
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I felt that it has the push and pull of the main characters that always leads to an epic story. Maria didn’t start out as a favorite character of mine because she seemed almost weak at the beginning but that did change and she had some amazing character growth throughout the story. I did end up really rooting for her and enjoying who she becomes in this story. Oz is amazing and compassionate. He cares a lot about everyone around and almost has a white knight complex. The story makes you feel like Oz would protect anything and everyone he loves from anything they may face. Don’t get me wrong he does have his moments and they just make him more humanized in the story. I had to keep reading this book just to find out what was going to happen. I needed to know not only what happens between them but also the secondary characters in this book are phenomenal. I hoping that they get books as well because they really helped the story flow and me turning the pages. I highly recommend this book to anyone. That’s it, just to anyone who wants a quick read that will make them feel good but won’t leave a book hangover.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Cruel start is a prequel to Aspen and Phoenix’s story. Their story continues in book five and six of the Hidden Valley Elite Series. Although you don’t need to need to read the first four or their prequels, I would recommend you do!! It is such a great series and the previous books give you a lot more information about other characters and events that are mentioned here and there throughout this book. The prequels are wonderful little starters and I am so glad that I read them! Back to this book. Cruel Start is so good! I can’t wait to finish Aspen and Phoenix’s story! Aspen is spending her last summer before college working and staying away from family drama as much as possible. She needs the stress relief that comes from cliff diving at the cove. She uses it to get away and unwind from life. After a dive she crashes into Phoenix. He’s the hottest man she’s ever literally run into. She’s the only girl to ever get under his skin. A night of passion at a cove party turns into the biggest mistake she could imagine and has repercussions he always said he’d never make in his life. Her risk-taking days are over and he’s risking more than ever. What will these two do when those two lines show a plus? Are their lives over? There goes NFL for him and college for her, right? And what about the fall out with their parents?! Their life plans are going up in smoke quick! Check this book out! If you love enemies to lover books (that end with a cliffhanger!), you will love this new adult romance. This story continues on with book five Cruel Hate and then book six Cruel Love, which I personally can not wait to read!!

Fairly Royal (Fair, #4)Fairly Royal by Grace Grahme
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was a complete slow burn with a few twists that I didn’t see coming. It was wonderfully written and the characters all had growth throughout the book. Anna has set terms to this “fake” relationship that leave Phillip unsure of how to act or behave. Everything is going swimmingly with these two and their relationship until something happens and Phillip seems to think he knows what is best for all parties involved. These characters are relatable and the dialect that is used throughout the book really makes you feel as if you are in Scotland. I highly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves a sassy female lead. This book is a quick read because it is a constant page turner. You will find yourself wanting to know what feisty Anna is going to do or say next, or you’re waiting to see if the shell that Phillip surrounds himself by will come crashing down. By far one of my favorite reads of the month.

Elizabeth is my hero. She is a single mom working to recover from a bad divorce. She has a crappy ex and an ex-sister-in-law with a bad attitude. This poor gal has family drama coming out of the corners. You name it, she’s dealing with it. Toss in an ex-boyfriend who’s now the police chief (he happens to be investigating a murder). You’ve got drama, murder, romance, humor. Who needs ‘Real Housewives…’? I’ve got Elizabeth and her issues. I fell in love with this story. So relatable because the struggles are real. She’s just trying to take care of her family and dig a little time for her. She got duped into an “opportunity” to sell lingerie but, oops….her upline was murdered. Now, she’s stuck with this large investment to try to get rid off. I do fell the murder took a back seat while the other issues got more front line but it all ended coming together nicely. I don’t think I’ve laughed quite so much. Minus the murder, I’ve lived most of that life. My favorite part was watching Elizabeth grow and discover what she wanted as a person and going for what was important to her. It can be sad to see the romance not work out but to see her grow was exhilarating. Good book that I will recommend to all.

Castor’s Kiss (Soul Bonded in the Stars Book 2) by Tai James – Review by Helen Dawkins

Castor's Kiss (Soul Bonded in the Stars # 2)Castor’s Kiss by Tai James
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Castor’s Kiss is book two in the Soul Bonded in the Stars Series. It is packed full of action and emotions that you simply cannot put the book down. The relationship between Castor and Mia is truly breathtaking and are a perfect match. Everything about the book will leave you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. Mia is a complete badass and Castor is a fighter, and both would protect each other to the death. The author did an amazing job at describing the scenery and the other-worldly creatures. Ends with a slight cliffhanger and I cannot wait until book 3.

Death & Mirrors (All Things Dark & Deadly Book 1) by SF Benson – Review by Helen Dawkins

Death & Mirrors: All Things Dark & Deadly, Book OneDeath & Mirrors: All Things Dark & Deadly, Book One by S.F. Benson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is my first book that was written by the author S.F. Benson, and I cannot wait to read more of her writing! The book is definitely a unique and peculiar twist/retelling of Alice in Wonderland, just with witches, magic, and necromancy with hint of Sherlock Holmes! Who would not love fantasy, magic and detective work all in one book?! Death & Mirrors is a fascinating story with paranormal elements, magic, family issues, mysteries that need a detective, and also some romance. Setting takes place in the late 1800s in London, as well as the corresponding mirror world Londinium (which is also known as ancient London roughly 40AD). The main character Evaline is a necromancer and an aspired detective who wishes to apprentice under the great Sherlock Holmes. She is whisked away to help solve a mystery about a creature/person who was given the name Doctor Death as well as the task of finding a myth of a gem called the Firestone, which she will need in order to defeat this monster. I love the litter easter eggs from Alice in Wonderland, for example, Evaline falls through to a mirror world that is very different but also very much alike her world, just like Alice fell down a rabbit hole to Wonderland. I thoroughly enjoyed Evaline’s character dynamics as she is headstrong, outspoken and very curious. The book does end on a cliffhanger, so I cannot wait until book two is released!

Saved by Love (Bellevue Bullies Book 7) by Toni Aleo – Review by Barbara Bohls

Saved by Love (Bellevue Bullies #7)Saved by Love by Toni Aleo
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book had a bit of everything and didn’t disappoint. I haven’t read the rest of the series before jumping into this book but I will be reading every book in it now. The book tackles serious issues but with a sense of dignity and class that is not always given in your typical sport romance books. It is based around hockey and the leading male character shows huge growth throughout the story. The leading female character seems to be the perfect match for the main man. She has a job that requires her to pay attention to non-verbal ques from others. This sets the tone for some serious topics which are eye opening and allows you to fully connect to the characters in the book. This was a good quick read but not one that you read and completely forget within a few days. It makes you become fully immersed into the book and the details allow you to feel like you’ve been reading it forever when you haven’t. I don’t mean that in a bad way but when you don’t want a book to end because it is so good, you get that feeing with this one but don’t feel like the books ends out of no where. I can’t wait to go back read the rest of this series. I highly recommend if y’all have a day to devote to reading, this should be the book y’all pick up.
