A fun, well-illustrated, entertaining children’s book to help kids understand what it takes before getting a dog and everything in between. The information contained within is vital, easy to read, flows well, and is written in a rhyming pattern which I think makes the information stick in your mind better. There is also a little parent’s guide on one of the last few pages that breaks down everything kiddos can learn inside this story. I’ve enjoyed all of the Porter and Midge stories thus far and I look forward to reading any others.

I absolutely loved everything about this book! The rhyming keeps both of my kiddos engaged as do the beautiful illustrations. Being educated about how big of a deal getting a dog is gets overlooked these days. People (even adults) go into it blindly or with little education just to find out they’re not prepared or not a good fit for a certain breed. Dogs absolutely become a member of the family, and the author really hit so many good points throughout this book. I love that CJ and Lora did so much research on dogs and not just what was fun or the quickest way to get their parents to agree! The author did an amazing job demonstrating multiple aspects of pet ownership. I would highly recommend this book for a classroom or home setting to educate young ones on this great responsibility!

Having read a couple of books from these talented authors. I couldn’t wait til bedtime to read this book with the little ones. They enjoyed reading it and started asking more questions about our dog. I love that it explains to them that there’s more to having dogs than just loving them even though that’s an important factor. This book explains how and why having and caring for a dog as a pet is a big responsibility. One that you have to be ready for and learn everything you can to help you prepare for getting one and caring for it. As always I really enjoyed reading works from this authors, and I look forward to reading more🥰

I love this series and its so fun for kids aged 7-12. Its the story of Lora and CJ who are young children that really want a dog. Their parents tell them that if they learn all they can about the responsibilities of owing a dog and what exactly owing a dog entails. They read all the books they can get about dog’s and dog ownership and then they talk to dog owners. They learn all about grooming, going to the vet, vaccinations and training dogs so that they are responsible pet owners. They also learn about the different breeds of dogs and try to determine what breed would be best for their family. Will their parents think they have done enough to earn the right to get a dog? This story, like the rest in the series, has a fun rhyming story line, beautifully rendered illustrations, and well-thought-out activities that both your child and yourself can do to learn about the responsibilities of getting a puppy or dog. This will be a great resource for any parent to give to their child who wants a new puppy or dog! It shows that it takes not days or weeks but months to learn about puppy care and that they need to form a care plan for their pet! So, if your child or anyone in your life wants a new puppy or dog, you should definitely pick this up, so they can form a care plan before they get their new furry friend.

Porter and Midge Paws and Responsibilities is the first book I’ve read by this author. My seven year old daughter was delighted to see there were more books listed at the end of this one. We enjoyed the book and I felt it flowed very well. She was able to read a good majority with some assistance by me without a ton of frustration which is always great. Her favorite part was “seeing” the dog be groomed and learning about caring for a pet in that capacity. We will be reading more Porter and Midge in the near future.

Porter and Midge: Paws and Responsibilities: A Kid’s Guide to Welcoming a New Dog (Porter and Midge Series) by Jennie Chen & Giselle Nevada is a great addition to this cute series. It is a perfect read for any child/family looking at welcoming a furry friend into their lives.
The illustrations that accompany the story really help to reinforce the ‘lessons’ in the book. They are cute, interesting, and colourful which helps to keep the focus on the story and educational components which help to teach children/families about the responsibilities of being a pet owner/guardian. These are important lessons to learn and know, because a pet comes with a lot of responsibility, and this helps to guide the reader in knowing what those responsibilities are. There is more to being a dog owner than merely supplying food and shelter. This covers everything from puppy care, to grooming, regular vet visits, training, socialization, and choosing the right dog breed to suit your family.
As with the other books in the series, this is a fun, quick, and easy read that has also has a great rhyming rhythm, a bit of a lyrical feel, that will help readers to connect with the messages.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Jennie Chen & Giselle Nevada!

I just love all of these books! There are a few to this series and I have read a few so far. If you are even thinking about getting your child a puppy/dog/pet you should definitely read this book with your child! These books teach you so much about the needs of the dog, the responsibilities with having a dog, and everything in between. Which of course you can use as a lesson with any animal you get. In this book you follow CJ and Lora on their quest to learn everything they can about dogs. What they need (food, water, training, vet visits, grooming, personal space, exercise, patience, etc.). They also learned about different breeds (small, medium, big, some that need more space to run, some that are small and need more attention, etc. etc. etc.). After learning as much as they can they go to their parents to ask for a dog and tell them everything they have learned and what they must do to have a dog. The parents believe they are ready and you get to meet Porter, who is a Mastiff and Midge, who is a Greater Swiss Mountain dog. Both different and both have different needs. If you read some of the other books in this set you will get to see them more and learn all about them, other dogs, and all their needs. This is a wonderful set for kids. They will learn all kinds of things! Adults could even learn from this book! I did and I’ve had dogs throughout my whole life!!

This book is a great way to introduce young children to the idea that owning and caring for a pet is a big responsibility, and that care should be taken in deciding to get a pet. This book is part of a series of books about Porter and Midge, who are dogs, and their humans Lora and CJ, but it can also be read as a stand-alone without any issues. This is a great book for helping young kids understand why deciding to get a pet shouldn’t be made on a whim, and why what kind of pet you choose is also important. The story is written in rhyming lines, which makes it fun for younger kids. The illustrations are fun to look at as well as bright and colorful. The back of the book also has some pet safety tips for use by young kids around animals. Overall, I would definitely recommend this for any family that has young kids and is considering adding a pet, especially a dog, to their family.

Excellent book to teach children all the responsibilities that come with owning a dog. I forgot myself, how much really goes into owning a dog, so there are some good points to think about and learn about taught in this book. I really like that the author has the children researching everything on their own, giving them a feel of the responsibility they will have to take on when it comes to owning a dog. The note to the parents at the end helps with offering tips and extra knowledge for adults to share with children.

Porter and Midge: Paws and Responsibilities is a kids guide to welcoming a new dog. My son and I are huge fans of these authors and this one may be our favorite yet. I love how it teaches children how important it is to care for our animals and all the Responsibilities that go along with it. This is the perfect book for teaching children in a fun way how to care for animals. The colorful illustrations help bring the story to life. We highly recommend reading this book and look forward to reading more from this Author.

I absolutely love this series! My son has had rough experiences with dogs in the past but has recently asked for his own “small dog”. We read these series for education and he loves them as much as I do!

This book is a great addition to the series and a brilliant way to teach kids how to correctly care for their pets. We are at that point in our family where we frequently get the question of “when are we getting a pet?” and this book is a brilliant first step in teaching our kids the responsibility involved with it.
Beyond the teaching moments, the book is fun and engaging. Children can easily connect with the story and illustrations that bring it to life. We enjoyed reading this book and going on the journey with the characters. We would definitely recommend this book to any family.
