Ashes (Modern-Day Fairy Tale Book 1) by MK Harkins – Review by Vanessa Watts

Ashes (Modern-Day Fairy Tale, #1)Ashes by M.K. Harkins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love all things fairy tale retellings and this one was no exception. The characters were well developed and the situations were relevant to today’s society and what kids have to deal with. This is a great beach read that once you start you find you may finish it in one setting.

Ashley is the high school pariah, a social outcast that works with dead bodies to boot. A constant target for the popular crowd Ashley has but one best friend that seems like fate brought them together and maybe that’s not so far from the truth. Life is going to plan, avoiding her evil step mother and step sisters, to finish school and finally be free of them all with a little boost from her dad. Then enters Harry James, mega celebrity, who has been ordered back to high school after a few very bad decisions landed him in front of a less than sympathetic judge. Now all the girls are chasing him except the one that interests him the most. With all the forces working against them can Harry and Ashley ever make it to their happily ever after?

In this modern day Cinderella retelling, Harry and Ashley must fight against all the forces that are pulling them apart. With a little bit of meddling behind the scenes can they overcome not just the evil step mother and her nefarious plans but also a controlling publicist and popular girl determined to find her own fame. This is a very fast read but there is action from the very first page. I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to see what happens next for the other characters!

Jester by Brielle D. Porter – Review by Vanessa Watts

JesterJester by Brielle D. Porter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As a debut novel, this book was well written with varying levels of intricacy. While it does take some time to unravel the strings of some characters it is fascinating to have several stories within one story.

Lisette has only one dream, to become the Queen’s jester. After all it seems to be one way out of the poverty life her father’s acts placed upon her along with the disadvantage to not having the family magic. Luc is also competing to become the Queen’s jester and is Lisette’s fiercest competitor. Yet as you unravel their tales and they grow closer to each other and closer to the competition more secrets are revealed. Will these secrets lead Lisette to her fame or familial redemption?

In some books it is clear to identify the villain of the story and the heroines. But not in this book, you root for some and find out you don’t like them as much in the end. While at times the buildup is slow, the cast of characters is diverse and captivating. The author does a beautiful job weaving together the different character backgrounds into one masterful tale full of mystery and intrigue.

Blood Sector (V-Clan Book 1) by Lexi C. Foss – Review by Vanessa Watts

Blood Sector (V-Clan #1)Blood Sector by Lexi C. Foss
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Reading the plot of the story makes you want to hate Kieran and meeting him is much the same. But as all good authors due Ms. Foss has woven a tale of characters who are multidimensional and complex. Until you peel back the layers you never really know who you’ll love and who you’ll hate.

Quinn is an unmated Omega who desires to choose her own mate and find someone worthy of protecting the secrets she carries along with her. Enter Kieran the one alpha prince not chasing after her hand making him the perfect choice for a mate. Only Quinn doesn’t want him as a mate but needs him for something else he possesses and for his ability to run the blood sector. Can they move past the distrust in each other to fully mate and rule as king and queen? Or are there ulterior motives behind Kieran’s actions that may put all Quinn holds dear at risk?

This book had me on the edge of my seat from the very first page. You don’t know until the end, as the story unfolds, who is the bad guy and who is pulling the chains. Who is keeping all the secrets and playing a game where they don’t have all of the pieces. This book is full of action, adventure, and romance with a mysterious backstory that will keep you guessing until the very end. I cannot recommend this book enough and will probably reread this book several times over because it is just that good.

Fairly Royal (The Fair Series Book 4) by Grace Grahme – Review by Vanessa Watts

Fairly Royal (Fair, #4)Fairly Royal by Grace Grahme
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I know I know, it seems if you have read one book with a similar plot they are all the same. Except that cannot be further from the truth for this book right here. It is the perfect quick beach read for times when you want a little escape.

Phillip is a stodgy earl who has been lauded as the most eligible bachelor but has sworn off serious romances realizes they and the throne do not mix. With his presence on more tabloids he comes up with a brilliant scheme to get the tabloids and hopefully his family off his back a romance. This is where Anna comes in, who is Phillips friend’s little sister. Phillip will help Anna with her family business and Anna will be Phillip’s perfect romance, at least on paper. Anna is a spunky female unfamiliar with high society and independent as a whip. So what happens when This fake relationship slips into the real territory? Could Anna be his love match or is the relationship doomed from the start?

I absolutely loved Anna’s character, she is super fun, outspoken, and the proverbial fish out of water character we have all felt at one time or another. I loved how the author built up the characters with Anna learning high society etiquette and Phillip learning to be less restrictive and to let his hair down every once in a while. Kind of like the perfect opposites attract trope that we hear about so much. This was an easy, very fun read that should be added to your to be read pile!

Rivals (Mafia Elite Book 7) by Amy McKinley – Review by Vanessa Watts

Rivals (Mafia Elite, #7)Rivals by Amy McKinley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I cannot stress enough about how much I love this series and I love this author. Amy Mckinley is the best at these mafia romances with a hard edge. Each book is packed with action from the very first page to the very last page.

In the mafia, females only have one purpose: to bring more power to the mails through alliances between families. Mia has discovered that she is just some pawn in a game that she has no decision in, at least until she decides she wants to play on her own terms. Mia seeks out the one person, often underestimated, that can protect her from her father and that is Nico. First she has to make him an offer he can’t refuse and secondly she has to put her trust in someone she only knows on paper. Can Nico learn to trust Mia or is it all too sweet of a tale to believe? As the threads unravel the truth is slowly revealed along with a little help from a ghost from her past.

This is one romance series I am sorry to see end. I have read every single book in this series and I cannot get enough of these hunky mafia men and the ladies that bring them to their knees. I laughed, I cried, and I even yelled at one point when someone was being dumb in the book. I cannot wait to read what Ms. McKinley has next on her agenda as I am sure it will be as fabulous as this series has been. Definitely take these books for a spin regardless of whether it is outside your typical genre. These books do not disappoint and each one is more thrilling than the next!

Something About Aimee (Girls from the Street Book 1) by S.E. Smith – Review by Vanessa Watts

Something About Aimee (Girls from the Street Book 1)Something About Aimee by S.E. Smith
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book, so much so that if it was possible to give more than five stars I would in a heartbeat. The characters are fascinating, the plot woven flawlessly, it was like a hug that you never want to end. I was upset that it had to end though and will probably reread this one several times over.

Aimee is a strong female character with a tragic backstory that makes you love her even more. Life is going great for her just the way she likes it on the down low but fate has other plans. Those plans involve a super sexy billionaire whose life Aimee just so happens to save. Now with her crowding his mind his only thoughts are claiming her as his and giving her the life she deserves. However, Aimee is not so easily swayed by the promise of money, wealth, and security. Can Qadir convince Aimee to give their relationship a shot or are they doomed from the start? What happens when Aimee is in the crosshairs of a rival who is determined to make Qadir suffer? With the cards stacked against these two will they ever get their happily ever after?

This is a fast paced, adrenaline inducing, emotional rollercoaster of a book. It had me laughing one minute and crying the next. This is one author I will return to time and time again, the writing was beautifully done and keeps you engaged through the entirety of the book. I cannot wait to see if more come out in this series as I will be one of the first in line to read them. Definitely give this book a chance it may become your new favorite book like it has for me!
