Solstice Shadows: A VanOps Thriller by Avanti Centrae – Review by Jonell Collins

Solstice Shadows (VanOps, #2)Solstice Shadows by Avanti Centrae
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Solstice Shadows: A VanOps Thriller by Avanti Centrae, was such a pleasure to read. I’m a sucker for anything historical. There was so much in this book of a historical nature, I even liked reading the notes at the end, and was inspired to look some things up. Sometimes you learn some things from books like this and you learn it without even knowing you did. I love a save our country thriller. This is an action-packed novel, but it also has a lot of introspection. It was an exciting adventure and not only that there was romance. The relationship between Maddy, Bear, and Vincent surely was touch-and-go. In the end I think Maddy made a great decision.

This was my first book by Avanti Centrae. I haven’t read book 1 but now I want to. This was a great book. I enjoyed all the characters and how fully developed they were. Our main female character is Maddy Marshall. She’s a software expert and a black-belt in aikido. Our main male character is Bear Thorenson. He’s a marine turned covert agent. Together they need to recover missing documents stolen from Maddy’s house.

Well there goes that relaxing fishing trip… One phone call and those infamous “Can I count on you?” words take Jake and Cody from a relaxing Alaskan fishing trip to a race to save the world.

This one hit close to home, with all going on in our world today there were more than a few times I sat thinking about things I had just read. The action and suspense was vintage Mark Nolan, I love this series. The progression of these characters, even the secondary has been amazing to watch. I was worried about Jake and Sarah as they have been written to this point but there’s always hope and this installment gave that to me. Cody is with no doubt one of my favorite characters ever. Every time I pick a book up in this series I pray because God forbid anything happens to our Cody!

You can absolutely read this as a stand alone but don’t. You really get to know these characters by reading the books before and why not? It is an amazing series and this author hits each one out of the ballpark. I read this in one sitting because putting it down was impossible!

So excited when I saw there’s another coming…I can not wait!!

AMAZING!!

Solstice Shadows: A VanOps Thriller by Avanti Centrae – Review by Anantha Rusum

Solstice Shadows (VanOps, #2)Solstice Shadows by Avanti Centrae
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is one action packed read, I had a feeling that I was actually seated in a rollercoaster. It starts with a bang and then the action continues non stop till the very end.
I had not read book 1, so there are some elements which I could not appreciate much for lack of prior background knowledge but nevertheless the book is still a standalone enjoyable read.
Maggie, an Aikido black belt teacher is forced to join hands with VanOps, a US Government agency involved in saving the world, because an ancient important artifact is stolen from her. There is an attack planned on the United States and the source of this attack is a super power which is charged by a meteorite to cause mayhem in the world. Now it is up to VanOps to save the world.
The action moves across multiple places in the world and it appears as if we are hopping from one place to another at a very fast pace. If you like movies like Indiana Jones, The Bourne series and Mission Impossible with lot of action, mystery and a thriller element to it, this book is for you.
I had a great time. I am thinking of grabbing book 1 and reading it too!

The fifth book in the Jake Wolfe series and I am still really enjoying reading them. I find myself easily captivated and engrossed in what I am reading from the very beginning until the end. It’s nice to step out your reading comfort zone sometimes which I did with this series and I have definitely found some new books and characters to love. I really like Jake’s character; he is really fun to read about. I loved the twists and turns in this new instalment – they certainly kept me on the edge of my seat on more than one occasion. I think the story is probably quite relevant with everything happening in the world at the moment so definitely made it more interesting to read! As always I look forward to reading more from this author again in the future!

EverMarked (The EverMarked Series Book 1) by A.J Eversley – Review by Angela Hayes

EverMarkedEverMarked by A.J. Eversley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

EverMarked is the first book in The EverMarked Series by A.J Eversley. It is a young adult dystopian fantasy with sci-fi elements, action, adventure, suspense, romance, mystery, and so much more. This is the first book that I have read from A.J Eversley, so I really didn’t know what to expect from the story. But the cover drew me to the book and the blurb sealed the deal. I enjoyed the story, and even though it was a little slow at times and I didn’t fully connect with one of the two MC’s, I am invested enough to want to continue the series- as well as explore the “Watcher Trilogy” which is apparently set in the same ‘world’, only set much earlier in time- sounds intriguing.
Sienna is a Marked Kid, (and the whole concept behind that is incredibly original and interesting) who has spent her entire life in an orphanage. She dreams of being “free” and imagining what life will be like once she’s out. Fighting in the Underground is her means-to-an-end.
Jayla’s a watcher whose mission is to keep the city safe. But a threat has emerged, which will test them all. With the explosion rocking the city, Jayla is determined to track down the ones responsible. Discoveries are made, which places the Marked Kids in the middle of everything. What ensues makes for an interesting read.
Ending on a cliffhanger, I am intrigued by where this series is headed and what I might discover in the next book.

Thank you, A.J Eversley!

I enjoyed this book. I have read all of the books in this series by this author. This is one of my favorites by him yet. They all can be read as a stand alone but I highly suggest reading all of the books in this series. In this story Jake returns with a ton of action and comes face to face with a psycho who’s determined to change the world as we know it. The twists and turns kept me turning pages and wanting to know what happened next. I have enjoyed Jake from the first book I picked up. He makes such a great character and really makes the story for me. This story was easy to read and engaging. I highly recommend this book and this author.

Deadly Weapon (Jake Wolfe Book 5)
By Mark Nolan
5 out of 5 stars

I loved reading the book Deadly Weapon (Jake Wolfe Book 5) by Mark Nolan. It is a story that from the beginning takes you on a non-stop, action-packed ride that is not over until the final page. It pulled me in, and I didn’t want to put it down. This is a series that I have loved reading since the first book. Jake Wolfe is back and what an adventure waits for him. He is helping to uncover and stop a conspiracy. Will he be able to stop those who have deadly and evil plans? Read this book to find out. This is a story that has action, danger, mystery, suspense, and even a bit of romance. Jake is a character who is intelligent, resourceful, and when sent on a mission has a fierce determination to finish the job. There are moments when I had to remind myself to breathe. The author does an amazing job of making both the storyline and the characters come alive. This story does have additional characters, many of whom know Jake or have heard about him. They have his back. Then there are those whose agenda is evil and has to be stopped. Don’t miss out on a story that will have you reading far into the night to find out how it ends. It is an exciting and entertaining story. I highly recommend reading it.

I have never read anything from Avanti Centrae prior to Solstice Shadows but I will definitely be back for more now! This book is one wild and adventurous ride the entire read. I love how this combines the thriller aspect with the adventure and sci-fi with a splash of romance to keep everyone interested at all times. This book certainly had my attention from page one and I read it well into the evening to finish it in one fell swoop. I just had to know how the characters would end up in the end and if there was going to be more soon on the horizon. I am excited to go back and read book one now of the VanOps thriller series. I can only imagine the adventure waiting there.

We meet Maggie, an Aikido black belt teacher as she discovers that someone has broken into her place and stolen a very important artifact. She is also in danger and things only speed up from there. She has to join forces with VanOps to help her retrieve the stolen item and ultimately end up saving the world. It is a lot of story but so worth the investment and I can’t say enough good about the world building we get in here too. You will feel as if you are right there with Maggie and the team as they traverse each adventurous task they find themselves in. Grab a copy today, you won’t be disappointed you did.

Solstice Shadows (VanOps, #2)Solstice Shadows by Avanti Centrae
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Solstice Shadows is the second book in the VanOps Series by Avanti Centrae. I was really intrigued by this book the moment I laid eyes on it. The premise promised a story that ticked off many of the elements that I love in a great action adventure. It even started off with a bang- opening a door on a shootout- so I was really excited to be along for the journey.
While this story did contain action, adventure, history, intrigue, mystery, relic hunting, and so much more- but after the initial shootout, the pace began to lag, and I couldn’t quite find a connection with the characters, or the story for that matter. I felt like I was missing something- that I should have known more about the characters, backstories, and even VanOps itself. I am kicking myself that I didn’t read Book One first- but the blurb read like this book could standalone in the series, like a lot of other thriller series stories can and do. But, unfortunately, it fell a little flat for me- especially as the story didn’t really ‘catch me up’ with past events, so I was left feeling a little lost, and wondering about a lot of things- far more than I would have liked- which detracted from my enjoyment of the book.
So, if you are like me and haven’t read the Book One yet, I really recommend doing so before starting on this one- because I think this story would have been far more enjoyable if I’d known what occurred back in the first book.
The ending leaves an opening for another instalment, with trouble on the wind, so I will start over with this series, reading Book One FIRST, and then Book Two again- before reading any new additions.

Thank you, Avanti Centrae!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Solstice Shadows: A VanOps Thriller by Avanti Centrae is a fast paced historical mystery/thriller that will keep you on your toes. Avanti puts you through your paces just like the characters. It is an intriguing read with lots of twists and turns. It is a little like Indiana Jones meets Da Vinci Code and entertains us with mythology, and other powers. I did find it a little bit slow in the beginning but this is the second book and I have not read the first, so I am guessing I was missing some vital information. I liked the characters but found they were a little underdeveloped. Having said that it is my first read by this author and I will be looking into more of her work.

Solstice Shadows: A VanOps Thriller by Avanti Centrae is a fast paced book that will keep you turning the pages. This book is the second book of the series however it can be read as a standalone. Personally I would advise readying them in order just so you get that background and build up before this story, although it is not a requirement.
I thought the book was quite fast paced and exciting. I expected it to be a little dense and confusing given the high-tech theme but it was a pleasant surprise to find that it wasn’t like that at all. I found it to be very easy to understand and a good book to get into.
The characters were interesting and I found myself rooting for them throughout the story. IT was well paced and the author did a great job of layering the story so it built up gradually and kept you interested. This was a great book and one I would certainly recommend.

I enjoyed reading the book Bird in a Snare (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 1) by N.L. Holmes. This is a book that has mystery, murder, danger, and is intriguing. This book was written in ancient Egypt and the detail the author added not only to the description of life, but the characters was amazing and off the charts. It truly brought the book to life and made it more enjoyable to read. Hani is sent to investigate a murder and bring back proof to his superiors, so justice is served. But who can he believe and trust? Will he be able to bring back the proof? I recommend reading this book and can’t wait for more.

Bird in a Snare (The Lord Hani Mysteries)Bird in a Snare by N.L. Holmes

Bird In A Snare is the first book in The Lord Hani Mysteries by N.L Holmes. This is an historical mystery set in ancient Egypt, which the author does an excellent job of recreating and bringing to life. I could feel the authors passion for the period shine through in her writing, which added to the whole atmosphere of the story.
Hani is a fantastic character, who along with the rest of the cast, help to bring this story alive. He is a loving father, husband, and a respected diplomat. This mystery begins when he is sent to far away Syria, uncovering a murder which could bring a great political backlash. Add in more dead bodies, corruption, politics, hidden agendas, and simmering tension- and this story really takes off.
Looking forward to seeing what Hani gets up to in the next book!

Thank you, N.L Holmes!

Bird in a Snare is the first book in N.L. Holmes’ Lord Hani Mysteries that takes us into the 13th century Egypt. This is my first read by this writer but if I am anything to go by what I just finished reading, this will be not the last of what I will have read by her! If you are a history buff and love historical fiction (and not just historical romance) then congratulations, you have a great opportunity to discover a new writer that will knock your socks off.
The writer is giving us a brilliant historical detective, Lord Hani, who is a king’s envoy. He is sent to investigate a murder and what he discovers is a deadly and treacherous plot that takes him on a dark and dangerous journey. The vivid descriptions of Egypt of that era pulls you in, simply close your eyes time to time and you will feel as if you are there, with him as you feel how passionate the writer is about the ancient history. Once you finish the story, you walk away knowing much more than who was behind the murder and the plot, you will walk away knowing much more about the Egyptian history. When I heard that the writer is an archaeologist and university profession by trade, I understood how she had managed to paint such a detailed and real picture. My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bird in a Snare (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 1) by N.L. Holmes. I loved this book. It is such a fast paced thriller that you are sucked in. This book was so detailed I felt like I was in Egypt. Its the story of Hani a Royal Scribe who is on a mission to find a murderer. Hani is admired and loved by many except for his renegade son. During his journey in finding the people responsible for murder he develops a surrogate father/son relationship with Maya. They will be met with political unrest, betrayal, and non stop drama. Hani loves his family very much and they are struggling to stay afloat while he is gone. He also has a love of birds. Will Hani find who is responsible for the murders and devastation before its too late? Will his wife still be there when he returns. Will his son ever come back to him. This and more will be answered when you read Bird In A Snare. Its a wonderful story full of love, intrigue and mystery. You will feel as if you have been to ancient Egypt when you are done!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bird in a Snare (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 1) by N.L. Holmes. Ok so firstly this story is way outside my comfort zone but I was intrigued by the description and boy am I glad I decided to give it a try. This is also a new author to me and I was definitely pleasantly surprised and impressed with the attention to even the smallest of details. The characters draw you in and take readers on an incredible journey. I found myself on the edge of my seat more than once and lost within the pages happily for hours. It’s a well thought out storyline and paced nicely. I’m excited to see what else this author has to offer. Four stars and highly recommended!
