My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Set back in the 1800’s, Jacob O’Connor meets Magnus Blackwell whilst studying at Harvard University to become architects. Magnus is the typical rich boy who hates his father and is out to do what he can to annoy him. Jacob is an orphan who was mentored by a man who helped him get a scholarship to get into Harvard. They become fast friends but Jacob quickly learns that Magnus has other ideas about studying and Jacob is stuck taking notes.. Magnus has found a woman, Frances that he is enthralled with but because of his love em and leave em attitude and her wish to save herself for marriage, Magnus moves on. However, his idea of love is not the same as others. Jacob finds himself and Frances getting closer. So close he tells Magnus he is going to ask her for her hand in marriage. Magnus outwardly gives his blessing but on the inside he is plotting his time to win her back. Magnus takes himself in New Orleans, to try to forget about her. He finds himself learning about voodoo, after meeting Oscar Wilde, a writer just starting out. Magnus becomes obsessed and he wants revenge.

Will Magnus find himself friends again with Jacob or will his obsession be his undoing?
