Shadow Bringer (Raven Academy Book 1) by Brandi Elledge – Review by Helen Dawkins

Shadow Bringer: Raven AcademyShadow Bringer: Raven Academy by Brandi Elledge
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the first book in the Raven Academy by Brandi Elledge and boy did it have me on the edge of my seat; such an excellent beginning to a series.

The characters and storyline are very well thought out and excellent for teens or even adults like myself. Brandi’s writing style is super easy to follow and relate to. The beginning is a little info heavy, but I promise it is worth it to keep on going and it is important for the rest of the book. Brandi does excellent with her world building with all of the different characters – vampires, witches, etc.

There is everything you need for an excellent book, drama, who is going to die questions, who is going to be saved, suspense, different species not just one, which i love particularly.

You won’t want to put this book down and you will eagerly be waiting for book two!

Spectacular world building with vampires, witches and werewolves and more. Definitely in my top ten books for this year. I feel like I am always saying “You won’t want to put it down”, But seriously you won’t! Very excited to see where this new series takes us.

I do not know why this book isn’t being talked about all over social media. I absolutely loved it! I have been in a bit of a rut with fantasy books for the past several months and this is exactly what I needed to bring me out of it. The author did a fantastic job with her world-building and creating curiosity surrounding the shadow bringers. I felt this was such a unique perspective to write about the fantasy/supernatural genre. I look forward to more.

Riley lives a boring life in a world filled with danger. She is taught to stay within the walls and follow the rules if she wants to survive in today’s world filled with monsters. She is taught to fear the dark and the shadows that lurk in it. Now that Riley is nearing her 18th birthday, she is bored living in the constraints of her religious upbringing and wants to leave the community. Just one more year of school and Riley and her best friend Sam, will make a run for it.

When Riley starts the new school year she is met with a group of new kids from outside the city walls. Instantly she is intrigued, especially by one of the new kids in particular. She knows that they are trouble but the call of the outside world is too strong for Riley to ignore. At what price will Riley pay to get what she truly wants?

I absolutely loved this book. One of my favourites this year. The author did an amazing job building the world and all that’s in it. The author combined a bunch of creatures from Vampires and werewolves to Witches and those that are known as the Shadow Bringers. I was hooked from page one. Riley was always the perfect child, never broke any rules and it was nice to watch her come into her own and stop caring about what others want her to do, doing her own thing instead. She is strong and will do anything for those she loves. I cannot see what the group will do next in this next book in the series!

This was my first book by this author and what a way to start! It was such an addictive book, and I couldn’t put it down. I ended up reading the entire thing in one day. The beginning can feel a bit slow, but I promise you’ll want to soak up all the information and dive into the rest of the book. Riley was raised in a very safe community which seems what you’d hope for yourself and your family. But she is completely and utterly bored and that can make for a dangerous position. Will Riley be able to stay safe, or will she finally find her way out of this boredom? This suspenseful fantasy is one you won’t want to miss! I am on my way to pick up the second book and continue this adventure.

What happens when a religious upbringing and a rebellious nature collide?

The answer is a very bored teenager and that is exactly what one teenager is feeling while living in her community which feels more like a prison, or a cage than anything else, especially when her life just seems to be ruled by fear and anxiety. Fear of the outside and the impure who live there, those vampires, werewolves and witches, not to mention the mysteruois Shadow Bringers, and just when reports of these entities start to appear more frequently, there is an influx of new kids at the start of her last school year.

Unfortunately, these new kids seem to be a lot different to the ones she is used to being around and not in a good way, they are rude, obnoxious and of course totally hot, which doesn’t help matters. As classes begin and pairings are made, an unlikely one begins, but this leaves more questions than answers until one night, all the answers are there for the taking.

Unfortunately, the answers have led into extreme danger, confusion, lies, revelations and a possibly deadly outcome, so what happens when a bored teenager gets all the answers? For this answer, you will have to read the book and discover all the ins and outs of this safe haven and the dangerous world around it, as you are pulled deep into the story with no wish to escape until you know what happens.

The cover is what caught my attention for this book, and reading it was just as amazing. This book was captivating right from the beginning, and I couldn’t pt it down. The characters were very well written and relatable that you can really see yourself as someone in this book with everyone. This was intriguing and captivating and very creative from the beginning. Riley is an amazing character that has to deal with so much in this book, as a teenager that is about to shift or does, she? This book is filled with so much from danger, suspense, adventure, twists and turns, and so much more. If you love vampires, witches, werewolves, and the supernatural, this book will not disappoint.

This book was a fantastic read! I felt like it had the perfect supernatural balance between the community. Not one get more “screen” time, each one gets about an equal amount. Riley lives in a very “cult-like” village. Nobody is allowed beyond the fence. It’s a dangerous world outside the fence. So when some new students from outside of the fence are welcomed into their little village, Riley is instantly enamored. Especially one particular character. But his knowledge and help come with a price. A steep price. Does she risk everything to go beyond the fence? Or does she stay in her town where it is “safe?” I seriously can’t wait to read the 2nd book to see what happens!

Mystery that keeps you guessing and intrigue to keep you hooked. This is the first book I have read by the talented Brandi Elledge, and I was not disappointed. Riley is tired of her “cult” community and though the world outside the fence is full of dangers she longs to escape her “prison”.
The world of today is long gone, and the shadows carry secrets and the impure. Riley lives in New Haven, a puritan community in Alabama, but how safe is it really when the extremists start moving south. Everyone has a chance of having the “impure gene” inside them that when mutated could turn them into a vampire, werewolf, shifter or the forbidden shadowbringer. Sam, her best friend, and she have dreamed and planned for the day they graduate high school, and they can finally escape the community and see the world outside for themselves. Only on day one of their senior year something is different, while being preached to over and over about the dangers of leaving the community and being given only one warning before exiled if the try they now have fifteen new students at their school. Pure High, where Sam’s mom is the dean, has welcomed and allows the new students to come and go from the community at will. Angry and confused Riley starts to speculate why they are allowed to and what has changed. Adopted at age three, Riley has always felt like an outsider. As a child she dreamed of the shadows and for as long as she can remember she has had all-consuming headaches but now something is different. The pain was always there just changed in degree but now more ailments are hitting her, waves of heat and fevers while the headaches continue. Asher, one of the new boys from outside the fence is clearly the top dog and he seems to always have an eye on Riley. While a girl in the group that seems to be his girlfriend strongly disapproves of his interest in Riley. A kiss at an end of the year party makes things complicated with her best friend Easton that leads to more awkward moments than she likes, and Sam thinks the two of them would end up together and reproducing like they are “supposed” to do if they don’t mutate.
What is happening to Riley, is she mutating? Who will she become, and who were her parents? This world kept growing and evolving as more was revealed. The process, while feeling slow at times, helped build a complete image in the mind that made it easier to see. The characters were never truly what they seemed on the surface, proving don’t judge a book by its cover. I was kept on my toes as I lost sleep in need of knowing what would happen next and by the end, I was already looking for book two, Shadow Dweller, out now. I know I will certainly be diving into it soon to learn what happens next.
While I usually don’t comment about other reviews, I felt it was necessary in this case. When I first came across this book the first comment, I saw mentioned no cursing and no “naughty” romance was in this book and that it was appropriate for younger children to read. Now I understand that every person’s opinion is different just as the age we determine to be a younger child might be different. I consider a younger child the age of my older son, which is eleven, and just three chapters into this there were statements that I would not approve of knowing he was reading in a book. Yes, there is some cussing/cursing in this book not excessively, but it is there, but the “naughty” romance comment is more what I am concerned with for a “younger child”. As an adult I felt the comment fit in with the story and made me laugh but this is the quote, “Baby, you haven’t had me between your legs. You have no clue what I’m worth,” one of the guys said. Now once again as an adult there is nothing wrong but an eleven-year-old, I don’t feel it is appropriate to deem this book okay for younger children. Once again loved the book and can’t wait for number two, just my opinion on another review.

A wonderful beginning to a new series. I was drawn right in from the beginning with the drama and adventure. I loved how it started with an almost cult-like meeting that young ones had to attend. This was an amazing gripping paranormal adventure. It is the first book in the Raven Academy Series. I loved how the author brought so many elements from vampires and werewolves to witches and Shadow Bringers, this book has so many twists and turns that I was hooked from the first page. I loved the character of Riley. She is a very determined young woman who won’t stand by while someone dictates her life. It was a unique story about Rileys life in the community and at times I was wondering if she was any safer in that community than she would be outside of it.

This book is filled with action, secrets, dangers and its a journey as Riley discovers who she really is.

Riley is 18 and is in her final year of school. Her plan is that once she leaves she plans to leave the community with her friend. The community has been her home forever however the things they are forced to do such as having their magic bound if they have any and being treated so they can’t reproduce. Riley believes she can have a better life in the free world. When new students arrive at the academy from the outside Riley sees them as her opportunity to get a taste of the outside world. 1 person in particular catches her eye and offers to help her for a price. But what Riley doesn’t realise is just how high that price will be and what it will cost her.

This was an amazing story and I can’t wait to read more

This book absolutely had my attention from the first page all the way to the end! I definitely couldn’t put it down until I got to the end and I will be absolutely reading the next book so I can see what happens with Riley. The book is a wonderful paranormal novel with witches, shifters, vampires, and other supernatural beings in the world. The author has created a descriptive world, with well written characters that are well rounded. While the romance is always one of my favorite parts of these books, I loved the relationship between Riley and her bestie Sam. I love seeing their relationship grow with all of the chaos happening. I absolutely recommend this pager turner!

The book hooked me right off the bat. I ended up reading the entire book in one day and late into the night. Riley is our main character with her best friend Sam. Sheltered, does not even explain the way these girls grew up. I was shocked but most definitely intrigued how this community lived. The surprise addition of the new kids at the academy causes lots of friction and drama. The new kids seem to not have a care in the world and are strong enough to take care of anything that may come to kill them.

This story had so many twists and turns with some heart wrenching moments as well. I already have book 2 and can’t wait to see what happens. The author’s attention to detail and storytelling was on point.

Shadow Bringer (Raven Academy Series) by Brandi Elledge – Review by Crystal Hevener Walker

WOW!!!! What a storyline this was!!! I was having a hard time putting it down. I want to know more! I enjoyed how each character had a different and unique personality. The drama, suspense, different species and livelihood of each one sheds light on how the beautiful main Character is to go on her journey. Being the first book in the series, you definitely will want to read the next book and find out what happens to the rest of the characters. Where will they end up? Who will be saved? Who will die? This is that type of storyline!

The author makes sure the suspense is worthy for a teenager and or even a younger child to read. There is no cursing or naughty romance in the storyline and it makes for a worthy book for all ages. I personally think it is one of the best books I have read in a long time and honestly it had a great start, then the climax made you want to continue and then once you got to the end you were left hanging. Which means you were waiting for the second book!

Shadow Bringer is the first book in the Raven Academy series by the supremely talented Brandi Elledge. I absolutely LOVE Ms. Elledge’s books- she is one of my favourite authors- so it was a given that I would be reading this Book. But to say I was blown away is an understatement- I couldn’t have loved it more than I do! I finished it and dove right into Book #2 which had only just released- I devoured them both and was left with a taste for more- in the best possible way. I hope Book #3 is coming soon because eeeep, I need to know what happens next.
This is a wonderful fantasy that captured me right from the beginning- giving me an instant addiction where I couldn’t have put it down, even if I’d wanted to- it is completely riveting!!! The story is woven around shadowbringers, shifter, witches, vampires, an academy for young immortals, magic, sci-fi, action, adventure, secrets, banter, humour, chemistry, romance, danger, drama, good vs evil, family, friendship, emotion, and has a bit of a dystopian setting and feel.
Riley has been raised in a sheltered ‘puritan’ community that keeps its inhabitants safe from the impure that have wreaked havoc on the world. With vampire’s, witches, shifters, and the deadly shadowbringers roaming the world, the communities offer the only real safe havens for the pure. Right? With nighttime an especially dangerous time, Riley ensures she’s never out after dark- she’s petrified of the dark and shadows- and has been since she was a very young child. She and her best friend have dreams for a better, and hopefully, more exciting future, but are unprepared for the surprise that fate had in store for them, both. Riley’s 18th birthday is one she won’t soon forget. Whisked off to the Raven Academy, a school for the ‘impure’ immortals she has a steep learning curve ahead of her. What happens when secrets are revealed? Add in some sizzling chemistry and a couple of hunky immortals to have to deal with, and the story takes an even more intriguing turn. You really should read all the exciting developments for yourself; you are bound to love it as much as I do.
Can not wait to continue the series!!
Brilliant!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Brandi Elledge!!!!

Her inquisitive nature and yearning for the outside world are so relatable and I loved watching her character grow! Shadow Bringer is a paranormal fantasy tale. It is another great start to another wonderful series. This has to be one of the best if not the best stories I have read this year. Brandi is of my favourite authors, so I jumped around in glee when I saw this book was out.
The interesting premise makes it an exciting and easy read. I love the paranormal fantasy world Brandi has created and am drawn to the struggles and triumphs of these wonderful characters.
There is a cast of interesting characters that are quirky, well-written and well developed and feel real you are in for a treat. I love the humour that made me laugh out loud and the mystery of not knowing what is coming next.
Brandi has given us supernatural creatures, vampires, witches, shapeshifters and shadow bringers all the things that go bump in the night and keep the pages turning. She is a gifted storyteller and I love that her tales are original. She intricately weaves a vividly detailed world that brings the whole story to life.
It is addictive, riveting, action-packed and full of intrigue, drama, magic, suspense and much, much more.
One young woman is about to find out exactly who she really is and find out what lurks in the shadows. I am not going to spill the beans so you will have to read this amazing tale all by yourself to find out what happens.
I cannot wait until the next book comes out.

A fantasy story woven around angels, demons, demis, immortals and magic, this book hooks the reader right from the first page. Many years ago, when a plague was causing human population to die, 15 archangels, who were not supposed to interfere, broke the law and saved few humans. These humans were considered blessed and possess special powers. Over centuries, as the bloodline progressed from one generation to another, the descendants still possessed certain special powers.
Hence, in the current world, it was mandatory that each human is tested whether they are blessed or not, at the age of 16.
One such blessed girl, Gabriella, despite being blessed, detests her super powers.
She is sent to one of the academies where the officials soon find out that she is blessed. Despising her situation, against her wishes, she agrees to get trained. she becomes an object of interest to her commanding officer. She makes few friends and many enemies in and outside the academy. As fate would have it, she finds herself in a pivotal position in an upcoming war as she tries to trace her own lineage.
It is a very fast paced book, with funny and interesting characters. I enjoyed it. I felt that the ending should have been more conclusive. But overall, a very enjoyable read.

I was hooked from the start and I couldn’t put this book down until I finished reading it! Then I got left on a cliffhanger ugh!! Gabriella is going through so much in such a short amount of time. I am so glad that Gabriella made two really good friends because she needs people on her side especially since she didn’t really have anybody growing up in foster makes it hard to get close to anyone. The author did an exceptional job weaving an intriguing and entertaining story that I couldn’t get enough of. I cannot wait to read the next book. I highly recommend this book.

This is the first book that I have read from this author and wow she now has a new fan. I normally don’t read young adults books but I’m so glad I did. I fell in love with the cover and then the amazing characters in this story. This is the first book of the Academy of Seraph. This book was a perfect way to start an addictive series. I could not put this book down until the end. It only took me a full day to devour this amazing story. I can’t wait and see what is next for these unforgettable characters.

Gabriela is not your normal seventeen year old. She was blessed by the angles and gave her some powers that she doesn’t even know how strong they are. Gabriela gets thrown into a new world that she doesn’t want to be in. She is now one of the students in the school for the gifted called the The Seraph Academy. Gabriela feels like she doesn’t belong but she quickly finds out that she is the best. She is shocked when she meets the commander of the school. He makes her feel things that she should not be feeling yet. Gabriela finally makes some friends but are they really her friends? Will Gabriela find out her true power or will someone want to take it from her?

This is one of the best paranormal fantasy reads I’ve read in awhile. Gabriella is what makes this book one of the best because as you get compelled further into the story, you see what all she’s battling and you quickly find out why she’s “blessed” by powers that are higher than who she is. As Gabriella is ready to escape her destiny at the academy, a handsome commander is keeping her interest. The truth is, she knows how important it is to hide her identity and what she possesses to protect herself from the fallen angels. Pick up this book and the first of an amazing series I’m hoping to read the rest of. Great book!

(This deserves so many more)

I’m sitting here staring at my screen speechless…Where do I begin?

This is my first book by Brandi Elledge, not sure why but it is, it will absolutely not be my last.

I won’t lie, I threw my kindle when i finished, I may or may not have also said a few curse words when it ended. When I was done I immediately pulled up everything I could find because I MUST have the next in this series, I was all ready to one click when I see it’s not even out yet. Throw in a few more curse words here.

This book was completely amazing..it had me reading till the yawns made it impossible to stay awake, then jumped back in needing to finish it, yet not wanting to because I didn’t want it to end. The flow of this story was complete and utter perfection…the genre is not one I normally choose, but the cover drew me in and some of the reviews had me too curious to pass it up. I usually get lost or lose interest but not this time. The dialogue throughout the entire story was so enjoyable and even though a few of my suspicions were spot on it did not matter, there were still some things I’d have never guessed.

There is no doubt in my mind that Remy has been added to one of my favorite supporting characters ever! “Bless her sweet ghostly heart” Then there’s Finn *insert huge sigh here* and this author transported me into the story and I felt like I was on Gabriella’s journey with her! This book was full of absolutely everything I love about reading. Finding a new author, falling in love with a book from a genre I usually struggle with, absolutely everything!

I usually make myself notes so that I can catch myself up before the next book in a series comes out…Im not doing that this time, this time I will just read it again, and probably again!

PHENOMENAL STORY!!! Many many thanks to this author, and please please please I truly must have the next as soon as possible!

Blessed: The Academy of Seraph by Brandi Elledge – Review by Erica Fish

Blessed: Academy of the SeraphBlessed: Academy of the Seraph by Brandi Elledge
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My head is still going over everything that happened in the story and it is that good. Just because it is marketed as YA does not mean adults cannot enjoy it. This story had ups and downs, twists and turns, and secrets around every corner. I personally could not put the book down until I read the last word. The plotline is engaging and the description of the surroundings you are in at that moment gives you the sense of being right beside the characters. Gabriella is “Blessed” and has to attend The Academy of Seraph. She was lied to about who Blessed her for her own safety. Will Gabriella found out the truth? Who else will find out about those who have Blessed her? Is she in danger? You will have to read the story to find out the answers.
