Wolfbane (Wolfbane Series Book 1) by Celia Hart – Review by Ayla Phipps

Rules are supposed to make life simpler, right? This is the first book I have read by this incredible author, and I could not get enough. It has been a long time since I was able to start and finish a book this size in less than 36 hours, would have been less but mom life caused a few delays. Told from multiple perspectives we are given background and depth to the characters not only through their own eyes but the eyes of those around them.
Jasmine is nearly twenty years old and has relished the life of rules until now. She has desires she “shouldn’t” and struggles not only to understand them but accept them in many ways. Blake is set to take over as the Midnight Maple Packs Alpha but he’s not the same man he was when he left for school, his priorities have changed him. Lucy is Jasmine’s best friend and hates the rules, feels they are old-fashioned and is willing to lose out on her fated mate to force the chosen mate not thinking of potential consequences for either of them. Luke is set to take over as the packs Beta now that Blake has returned from college. One night two years ago started the changes in Jasmine, she had a moment with Luke that changed something inside her. She felt in her soul that he belonged to her, but his mission took him away before her eighteenth birthday and now that he is finally returning home after two years, she is both excited and nervous about what that could mean. A fleeting moment with Luke is now rivaled by every encounter she has with Blake; she senses a darkness within him but can’t help feeling comfortable in his presence.
Will Jasmine be able to keep to her parents’ rules? What happens when Luke returns home? Blake or Luke? Everything about the world made me wish I lived in Vermont just to see the gorgeous mountains with my own eyes. The author’s complexity in the characters keeps you holding your breath in anticipation of what will happen next. So many times, I caught myself not breathing and then udder relief or in some cases devastation at what the next page held. I cannot wait to see what happens next because Celia Hart is added to my favorite authors of 2023. Book two Wolfblood here I come.

I’m a sucker for a fated mates wolf tale but this one put everything on its head!
Jasmine is one of the only teenagers that’s managed to do the unthinkable, save everything including your first kiss until you meet your fated mate after you turn 18. Her best friend Lucy thinks it’s silly and threw all of those beliefs away to be with her boyfriend Luke the upcoming Beta.
Blake, the upcoming Alpha comes home after years in Sibera at Alpha college while he mourned the loss of his fated mate and meets Lucy and finds her charming and a precious gem saving everything for her fated mate. However Blake can’t resist wanting to have a few of her firsts to himself and finds himself falling into feelings he doesn’t understand as his fated mate is gone and he thought he’d never feel anything again.
In walks Luke, home from a mission for the last two years and ecstatic to be by Lucy’s side again only to find himself in the worst love triangle possible right at the breaking of a major war.
What does Jasmine decide, will she wait to meet her fated mate or will she explore her adult urges with Blake. What about Luke, what does he do when he loved Lucy but finds he also loves his goddess chosen mate as well? What is better fated, or chosen? You’d think thr answer would be simple but this author really makes you think about this situation in a way other wolf stories never have. Extremely well done and I can’t wait to read more!

Life as a shifter can lead you into the unknown. Jasmine’s parents are very religious and extremely strict. We have all had friends who wished their parents would be more like other parents. She has grown up with the view that you wait for your mate and don’t spend time with male shifters. Jasmine known as PJ or Perfect Jasmine has all A’s in school, won’t have sex until she meets her mate, and listens to her parents and doesn’t break any rules. When she turns 18 she will be able to sense who her mate is and she is looking forward to the day when she finds her perfect mate. She will fall in love and all will be perfect. We all wish it was that easy.

Her best friend for years Lucy doesn’t care about the rules and has a boyfriend she is head over heels for. She is determined that they will end up as mates.

Trials will turn their lives into turmoil in the epic story. I had a hard time putting this book down and read very late into the night.

Why are wolves gorgeous beyond belief, well some of them. Blake is going to be Alpha and Luke will be his Beta. With war on the horizon how this story will unfold is anyone’s guess.

I can’t wait to start reading book 2.

This is the first book in the Wolfbane series. I don’t normally enjoy love triangle books but picked this one up and wow. There were so many things I loved about this book (Blake!), and there were some things that frustrated me, but I think it’s a good sign that I was able to get so passionate about the characters and events taking place.
The premise was great, and while I wish some things had played out differently and more focus on some characters than others, I found it entertaining and engaging. It was well-written, flowing nicely and the descriptions conjured clear and vivid imagery of both the scenery and the characters.
I really enjoyed most characters, but my absolute favourite was Blake. I won’t allow anyone to say anything against him, he is precious and must be protected (not that he needs protection)! He’s so sweet and understanding of Jasmine’s beliefs and needs and I honestly wanted to stop reading at points where I felt he was not receiving the attention he deserved. He is perfection and no one will convince me otherwise. I also loved the effect he had on others for example, despite being the future alpha, he elicits a fun and more carefree side to Jasmine. He has such goodness in him, even with the darker parts and the terrible things he has experienced, that really show his true character and I can’t get enough of him.
Another thing that I absolutely loved about this book was the character development. Anyone who knows me know that I adore books with brilliant character development, and this one certainly provided me with plenty. Not only do we see the how and why characters start the way they did, we see the events and people which guide and shape them as the story progresses.
I enjoyed the refreshing take on the mate bond and chosen mates. The way the story played out in the end made me happy and the fact that there was no cliffhanger – bonus!
The bit I didn’t like was how drawn out the love triangles went on for and the way some characters were seemingly forgotten at times. I understood the need for it to play out that way to show the development of the characters and the events which unfolded but the amount of focus on it did cause me to take a break and come back to it. I also felt the development could have been even greater if some of the important/defining moments were given to alternative characters.

Overall, this is a very enjoyable read and I would happily reread. I can’t wait to fall back into the world with book 2!

Wolfbane by Celia Hart

Wolfbane by Celia Hart is about a pack of young wolves who have complicated relationships due to their way of life, and also about coming to power. This book is a romantic tale of how some people come to just simply be right for one another. Dive in to this modern story based in Vermont and succumb to your inner animal.

Jasmine is a young wolf who believes in her religion and what magical things the moon goddess provides for her way of life. She was just living her everyday routine as she always has until she meets a certain prince alpha that waltzed into her life, knowing that she wasn’t supposed to divulge into such temptations as she was supposed to wait for her true mate. What will she do?

This story has multiple character POVs between the 4 main characters. It is a magical tale where sometimes even if things are supposed to be right for you sometimes aren’t, and that’s okay. I loved this chaotic relationship status quo as it definitely flowed beautifully. This book was such a page turner, at first I wasn’t sure but I’m glad I didn’t put it down. Looking forward to book two. Overall 5 star book!

Angsty werewolf romance
I love a good werewolf story and this did not disappoint. Wolfbane is the first book in the Wolfbane series and it is a strong start. With good characterisation, world building and lots of emotion I found myself reading late into the night. The author gives a different spin on fated mates and the mate bond which I found interesting. I really liked the different POVs throughout as it gives so much more depth to the story. I eagerly await book 2. Highly recommend!

 Jasmine
I always follow the rules.
Especially the one to wait for your mate.
Don’t flirt. Don’t date. Don’t fall for anyone but your one true love.
But then I meet the mysterious future alpha, and suddenly, I am thinking about doing unthinkable, immoral things with a very sexy man who is definitely off-limits.
That is—until my first crush reappears. Now I’m torn, choosing between two hot, muscular werewolves, and life has gotten complicated. . . They didn’t write a rule book about this!

Blake
The Moon Goddess granted me a mate—then regretted it and took her right back.
But who am I to complain?
I am the alpha after all.
I’m supposed to have everything I want.
Everything but discipline, self-control, and common sense.
Because that all seems to vanish as soon as I meet her. . .

Luke
I totally messed up.
I betrayed my mate before the bond clicked into place.
I didn’t wait. Didn’t hesitate. Didn’t even think it through.
I may have made a huge mess, but I’m going to clean it up. I can handle it. I think. . .
