I liked this book a lot. It touched upon real life issues that people go through. From sickness to loss to loneliness. It taught about forgiveness, taking care of yourself and being selfless. It was a great read just in time for the holidays. The majority of the book is about grief and at first I thought hmmm this isn’t going to be a feel good story but I was completely wrong. By the end of the book my heart was so full. Definitely a good read.

A Crossbow Christmas
By: Ann Swann

This book takes place in a pandemic world. I love books that tackle the “new normal” that we are all facing right now. So that is major points already for me.
Carina was definitely affected by the pandemic. Haven’t we all. She was in the hospital for several months, working to recover. Now that she’s home all she wants to do is celebrate Christmas with her family. However, everyone’s lives got busier while she was in the hospital. Her husband is too busy working to show that he wants a family Christmas of times past. Her kids are grown, with families of their own. They have all moved away and are too busy to stop and have the Christmas their mother desires.
A friend offers her his cabin for Christmas. If she goes she will definitely have a white Christmas. In her journal, she writes about her desire to go to the cabin. However, she also writes about her worries about going to the cabin alone. Through her journaling, we see that she doesn’t think it is possible to go by herself. How can she? She’s been so busy taking care of everyone else she doesn’t know how to take care of herself. Really, she doesn’t know how she can have a vacation all by herself.
Carina is possibly one of the most relatable characters I have read in a long time. Every mother, wife, woman can relate to her struggles. We may not be able to relate to her struggle of wanting a big Christmas, but we can relate to her struggle to do something nice for ourselves. I don’t know any woman who would willingly take a trip by themselves without second guessing themselves. I think that Ann Swann did a great job encapsulating womens feelings in this story. She captured a women’s grief in the changing seasons of her family. I think everyone about to go through the empty nest process can also relate to those feelings.
I can say I felt the otherside of this as well. I am not a mother or a grandmother. But I am a daughter and I see the change that parents feel when I am torn about who to spend time with on the holidays.
This is such a great book! I definitely recommend it to anyone wanting relatable characters as well as a holiday theme!

A Crossbow Christmas by Ann Swann – Review by Jenni Bishop

A Crossbow ChristmasA Crossbow Christmas by Ann Swann
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Crossbow Christmas tells the story of a woman who is lonely and sad and was ill and somewhere along the way lost who she really is. She contemplates her life and how she got to where she is.

It is a tale that I think a lot of people will relate to. Who are when the kids are grown? Who are you when you have been married for so long? Who are you when you have always been the care giver? Who are you when you feel lost and don’t know who you are anymore? Who are you when you feel like others are moving on, but you are standing still?

Carina ponders those same questions and sometimes the road to finding the answers to those questions is a frightening place to look. Some time away, some time to herself, some time in a different place may just be what she needs to find herself and her Christmas miracle.

It is an emotional read but a good read.

This was such a wonderful read. I really connected with the characters I met and came to love. The story was sweet, but had a lot of festiveness that related to the holiday spirit! Wonderful read!

Personally loved Savannah and felt for her truly. A Christmas being spent alone is hard enough, but when you lose your soul mate, its even harder. Loved her personally. She gets a chance to find the holiday spirit still through an encounter, and to say the least, it is life changing. I loved her and Matthew. Sweet together m and the spirit of the holidays was certainly strong with them. It was as if this book had a magical spell over me. I felt so warm in my hear as I read it, and felt oh so happy. It was indeed a touching read. I very much enjoyed the author’s writing skills as well. Wonderful and perfect holiday read! Loved it!

Could not get enough of this book or the charming magic that it possessed over its reader. Perfect read for this time of year. Can’t say enough good things! Highly recommend this must read holiday book and author!

What a truly adorable story! Another one that Hallmark could make into a Christmas movie. Matthew & Savannah are a cute couple that meet through a bungled attempt to tell her that she would be perfect to play Mrs. Claus. Matthew fell in love with Savannah’s hair color. They are both older with grown kids, widows and deserve happiness. I love how this story is realistic, shares their struggles, and shows their happiness. Supporting characters like Fern are a blessing as she is a fascinating lady that should have her own story. The story is so well done. You have romance, friendship, cuteness, and Santa. The memories brought up through the setting of the store display can also bring back happy memories for readers. This is a wonderful holiday story. I will be buying some copies for gifts. I hope to see more from this author.

Carina is just trying to get back on her feet after the pandemic threw her life a curve ball. Max offers her the opportunity. This book is the best “feel good” that I have read this year. The writing is heartfelt. You can truly feel the emotions in the writing. She tries to get her husband and family together for a holiday. Who can’t relate to that? I never read the back because I always like to judge a book by my opinion. I went in wondering if this was an “age-gap” romance. I was so glad to see it was “second-chance” and a friendship one. The characters are all so special in this book. They each had their own role in the story. The storyline is exquisite and interesting. You can’t put the story down. You are pulled right in. Get a cup of cocoa and join everyone in town. That ending…..I love this book. Another I will be gifting to friends. A definite holiday must read.

This was such a perfect book, to bring forth the feeling associated with the holidays! The book was touching, strong and connecting characters, and a strong sense of the beautiful holiday spirit!

Carina was such a wonderful character, was very easily to connect to her. I think especially on how she endured the pandemic, and wanted nothing more than family time. It’s true though, with the pandemic we lost so many chances to be with loved ones, we need to embrace it now. I felt for Carina truly, trying to make plans and she was so full of festive spirit in her heart, and no one would budge for her. I found what she goes through, and comes out on top of, very sweet and touching. She grew her wings for sure, it was a beautiful read, touching, and perfect holiday read. Definitely a must read in my books Very much enjoyed it!

Such a sweet holiday story. Wonderful story and cast of characters. I think everyone grew in some shape or form, and established the meaning of the holidays. Highly recommend this must read book and author!

She writes about it in her journal, trying to convince herself she can do it alone. But it still doesn’t seem possible. She isn’t adventurous, she’s always been everyone else’s caregiver. Ann has been a writer since junior high school, but to pay the bills she’s waited tables, delivered newspapers, cleaned other people’s houses, taught school, and even had a short stint as a secretary in a rock-n-roll radio station. She also worked as a 911 operator and a police dispatcher.

Ann’s stories began to win awards in her college days. Since then she’s published novels, novellas, and short stories. But even if no one ever bought another book, Ann wouldn’t stop writing. For her it’s the cathartic pause in a sometimes-crazy world. Most of the time, it even keeps her sane.

This read just flew by me. It was short but honestly made and impact and left me wanting more. If you are looking for a hopeless romance, Christmas spirit, or even just the small town intimacy, this is definitely your book.
In his Christmas tale a local small town bar owner, Amber, is known as the town’s grinch because she refuses partake or even acknowledge that Christmas exists. To rescue he from her holiday pessimism enters Giovanni, the son of the towns Italian Mama.
Instantly amber is shocked to find herself falling head over heels for her newest friend. But the book poses the question of whether Amber’s rocky past inhibit her from making a happy future.

This story reminded me a lot of the Donna VanLiere books I enjoy so much over the holiday season. It gives off such a feel-good happiness that you can’t help but love it. The characters are normal and relatable you can’t help fall in love with them. The perfect read for Christmas time when we all have a little extra hope and happiness laying around. It is a good reminder to appreciate what we have and be grateful. I hadn’t read any of the others in the series and the story was good on its own, I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

This is a short and sweet Christmas romance. Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. I’ve read several books by this author and enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed her others. It’s a classic tale and a bit steamy, but the characters also have some emotional development and backstory, although I thought the characters could have had a bit more depth. Still, this is a warm story, perfect for the season.

I loved this Christmas novella! It had everything a Christmas romance should have. A snowy small town, a kind hearted but lonely woman and a sweet gentleman who comes along to show her what Christmas is really about.

Amber is a strong independent bar owner who loves her town and everyone it in. However, she is Cold Creek’s designated Grinch. She is in her annual bahhumbug mood when handsome Gio walks into her bar and turns her world upside down. Gio is a single father of a sweet 6 year old girl and they just moved into town when he meets Amber. He is instantly attracted to her and her spunky attitude. When he discovers that she despises Christmas he makes it his mission to find out why and to convince her to give Christmas a second try.

This book filled me with Christmas spirit and joy. It was a fast read but I still had time to fall in love with the characters and Cold Creek. This is a must read book for anyone looking to snuggle up with a blanket, some coca and romance this Christmas season!

This is a Contemporary Romance novel and is 156 pages in length. This story follows Amber and Giovanni. Oh my heart! Amber is a bar owner and would love a family of her own. The only problem is, she does not have the best memories of holidays and so she holds back and does not participate. Giovanni is a chef and a single dad. He loves the holidays. He talks her into spending the holidays with his family – will he be able to persuade her to look at them differently? The author really hit this out of the park!

This book saved me while I was home sick.  I was able read it between my naps and even helped me stay awake a little longer because I did not want to put it down.

Amber and I had something huge in common and that is neither of us being a big fan of Christmas. Our reasons are similar but different.  I loved watching Amber evolve from lonely but content to a happy and in love.

I enjoyed this story so much and loved the way it ended.  Happy tears may have been shed.

It’s not every day that it’s the female main character that is the one to say bah humbug about the holidays so I was instantly intrigued.and boy oh boy am I so excited to tell you just how much I loved this story. This author has definitely created a one of a kind story world with this series. Amber is definitely a person I’d be friends with in no time. From page one I knew I wouldn’t be putting this one down until the last page and I was correct. Everyone in this story brings this story to a new level of awesomeness in my opinion. The characters are complex and relatable, so very easy to connect with. The storyline flows smoothly and I loved every minute I got to spend with these characters. Five of the biggest stars I can give and highly recommended!

This is not the first book I have read by this author, but it is the first in this collection. I read this story without even realizing there was a book one through four so do not be scared away from the “Book Five” part. I had no problem reading this story, in fact I want to go and read the rest of the Reigning Hearts stories.

This story is super sweet and super cute. It is a fast read as it is a novella with instant attraction. The characters are easy to love and there is no real bad guy or evil lurking in this story. Yes, the main character had a sad life, heart breaking even, but she survived. Luckily Gio is there to help Amber learn what she has been missing.

The best quote is from Mama Sentieri “Only you can make a choice to live a life of joy or regret.”

Every day is a choice.

A Cold Creek Christmas is part of the Reigning Hearts series, but can be read as a stand alone. There are mentions to past characters, but the story is independent. This was a cute quick story to get you in the Christmas spirit. The book focuses on Amber, bar owner and not a fan of the holiday and Giovanni (Geo) who loves the holidays. He has a young daughter, so he lays the Christmas spirit on thick. The two quickly hit it off, much to the delight of Gio’s grandmother, who is trying to play matchmaker between the two. I did enjoy the story and will be reading more by the author. My one complaint was the steamy scene… the words chosen were very… high school… and made me chuckle. But it didn’t take away from the story at all. I was glad to have a happily ever after.

It makes me want to visit during Christmas so I can join in the fun too. The pub, the Italian bakery, the bookshop and main street are all given so much detail. The characters are all really likable, especially the petite and sassy bar owner, Amber. Gio and his great-grandmother have such a special relationship and I love their story. What a cute Christmas story! Amber has a complicated past that has made her want to avoid Christmas, which is difficult to do in festive Cold Creek. Giovanni moved to Cold Creek to take over his grandmother’s restaurant and make a home for his daughter. When Giovanni meets Amber, he is determined to change her feelings about the holidays.

I love feel good stories. Amber, Giovanni, and the people they are surrounded by are perfectly painted and easy to fall in love with! Their stories are built well and just complex enough to make them relatable. I was sucked right into Cold Creek and before I knew it, the book was ending and I was left wanting more. The ending made me cry happy tears!

Then there’s Amber she absolutely hates Christmas and everything about it. But can Gio warm her icy heart for the holidays. They were so cute together it makes me swoon.

It is always a privilege to read a story as good as this one. I never get sick of reading a love story that is hard fought and colourful. This Christmas sizzler was steamy, engaging and incredibly touching. Amber and Giovanni are polar opposites and there were many confrontations and laughs throughout the book. The chemistry was palpable and the incredible twist on words was addictive and very swoon worthy. Playing hard to get is one thing I love to read about. Witnessing them succumb to Cupid’s arrow is both stimulating and arousing. It touches a very deep place in the heart and proves that love really does come in all forms and packaging. 5 stars.
