Flowers of Evil (Hani’s Daughter Mysteries) by N.L. Holmes – Review by Santana Hicks

Flowers of Evil (Hani's Daughter Mysteries Book 1)Flowers of Evil by N.L. Holmes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Neferet and Bener-ib are two young women who are skilled healers. They opened up their own practice in hopes to help all those who need it. Unfortunately, another healer spread lies and rumors about the duo causing them to not have any patients. It doesn’t help that this book is set in ancient Egypt times, where women are usually seen and not heard.

To make things even more difficult for the women, their first patient is a dying man who cannot be saved. Someone murdered him. Neferet takes it upon herself to follow in her father’s footsteps and find out who did it.

The journey is a hard one. No one will take her seriously without a male present. Even her own father seems against Neferet doing this. She will stop at nothing to find justice for the man and to prove herself to everyone in the process.

I enjoyed this book. The author wrote a strong willed woman, trying to end sexist stereotypes and I was all for it. Neferet is intelligent and caring. She helps anyone without prejudice. She even takes in strays, whether it’s an animal or even orphan children.

Bener-ib mostly just followed Neferet around and acted as a wallflower but it worked for them.

My only downfall for this book is all of the difficult but yet similar names. I found it tough to keep track of names of the secondary characters.

I am excited about what the author is going to do for book 2 in the series!

Flowers of Evil by N. L. Holmes is the first book in the Hani’s Daughter Mysteries series. I’m sure I’m not the only one who can say that I could just feel the love and time the author put into this project, with all its vivid imagery and historical mentions. The characters in this practically jump off the page, they were so well written. It was hard not to read this in one sitting, I kept having to remind myself of things I needed to do to get myself to put it down! I wholeheartedly recommend not just this series but this author as a whole!

This isn’t my first book by this author and certainly won’t be the last! I found this book surprising me as it wasn’t what I had initially expected. The cover drew me in at first, and then the synopsis sold me, so I gave it a chance. I loved the way the author told the story because it felt like I was there right along with Neferet and Bener-ib. The only thing that gave me any issue at all with this book was that I had other things to do, but I could NOT put this down! I had to finish it as it was such an addictive mystery with so much adventure tied in. I loved the Egyptian background and the depth of the characters as it made the world real for me. I highly recommend taking a chance on this book so you can go on this marvelous mysterious adventure too!

Ancient Egypt. Hook line and sinker. This is the first book I have read by N.L. Holmes and my oh my, I look forward to the next one. The cover pulled me in, I have been obsessed with ancient Egypt since I was about eight years old so coming across this historical mystery was a dream come true. Two of my favorite things Egypt and mystery, yes please. Immediately I loved the map of ancient Egypt, the character list and the glossary at the beginning as a refresher and to prepare me for what was to come.
Neferet and Bener-ib are sunets (doctors), while only twenty-four their credentials are great, having trained under the physician of the Royal Ornaments, and were royal physicians themselves before Neferet’s dream was given a chance. She had always wanted to offer all proper medical care. Unfortunately, they have a local rival sunu, Djed-har. Quickly after officially meeting him Neferet can piece together that he is a fraud that feels women should not be physicians and that their credentials are only in their dreams. Not being one to back down the women are determined to gain the favor of the people to come to them in times of need. Finally, a patient, while initially happy they have a patient, things turn somber and mysterious too fast. The man dies, his last words “Sekhat. Rabbit.”, confused the women are determined to find out who murdered the Bearer of the Devine Offerings. A man that made such beautiful things targeted and murdered, for a reason. But why?
Two mysteries. How to sway the people to trust them? Who killed an innocent man who made beautiful bouquets for Amen? The chills that crawled my spine at the level of details the author includes made me so excited to keep going. Not only is the mystery well thought out, but the lives of the characters are beyond relatable even if there is a stark time difference. They are everyday people in their time trying to do their best, make a living and set keep the world balanced. I must go back and read the original Hani mysteries while waiting for book two of the Hani’s Daughters Mysteries. I cannot get enough of this author’s blend of historical ancient Egypt and mystery.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Neferet and Bener-ib are two young ladies with a very unusual occupation, they are medical professionals and is Egypt, this is practically unheard of, they have trained for half their lives so that they could open up their own practice, the only issue is that people are very wary of them and tend to steer clear. This infuriates Neferet, but Bener-ib just becomes disheartened, neither of them however, are going to give up on their dream, so Neferet takes matters into her own hands and looks for the reason why they are not receiving any patients.

Neferet is stubborn and once she has her mind set on something, nothing will sway her from the path she has decided to take and this path is no other, she has decided to pay a visit to the other medical professional in the area and see if they can’t come to some kind of arrangement. It soon becomes clear that this will be an impossibility as soon as she speaks to them, the terms of endearment used and the manner of which she is spoken to raises her hackles and she soon decides that it isn’t worth any more of her time, so she heads back to the practice.

This was not to be a peaceful morning because there is a frantic banging on the gate and frenzied shouts for aid, do they spring into action and see the patient, however, they ultimately realise that they will not be able to save him and offer their condolences to his wife when he does pass. As the story of the injuries unfolds, it becomes clear that this was a murder and of a high class person at that, it turns out that they were the head florist at the temple of the Aten and therefore, not someone with many enemies, this is something the two ladies ponder as the clean up the building ready for lunch.

This lunch turns out to be a family gathering of the most joyful sort, but they have an ulterior motive, they want to speak to Neferet’s father about the murder and see if they can get any pointers as how to go about solving it, but they are warned away from for good reason, especially when the danger starts to follow them. Will the two medical professionals be able to solve the crime with the help of their family, or will they be stopped before they can? This is a historical mystery where danger lies in the shadows and discoveries are made which could make or break fates and lives as this tangled web is sorted through.

Flowers of Evil (Hani's Daughter Mysteries Book 1)Flowers of Evil by N.L. Holmes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Flowers of Evil is the first book in the new Hani’s daughter mysteries series by N.L. Holmes. It follows Neferet and Bener-ib – two young Egyptian sunets (or physicians) as they try to untangle the mystery of the brutal stabbing of a local florist. It includes a rowdy cast of characters and rival sunu intent on driving our heroines out if business.

I’ve never read any of the original mystery series by Holmes but found this to be a solid read without the context provided there. It was a well-written with many renderings of Ancient Egypt that were both imaginative and shaped by real knowledge of the culture. If you like mysteries and diving into Ancient society then this is definitely for you!

I have always had an obsession with history, particularly Ancient Egypt. I find knowledge of ancient times fascinating, and I jumped when I saw the description of what this book entails – not to mention, the author. I have read this author’s work before and have fallen deep, deep down into the story without much trying. I read a lot of historical fiction – it’s my thing – and I can wholeheartedly admit that this author is one of the best at it. It is evident that this author is not only a talented storyteller, but quite knowledgeable about the subjects of her stories. She is a professional archaeologist who has done excavations and taught ancient history, just to name a few things, so this book is dripping with vibrant details and nuances that pull you right in. I also gravitate towards strong female leads, and Neferet and Bener-ib are fantastic. Holmes’ experience as an educator is also evident in the Historical Notes and lists of terms, characters, and gods offered at the beginning of the book, which sets the reader right into the place and time. I can’t recommend this book, and author, enough!

This book is a clear labor of love, and it was a very good book as well. I loved the story line of it all, and I also really enjoyed the ending and the book as a whole. It’s a shorter book to my standards, which is fine, but the writing on it is so detailed that I still had to take my time with it and observe everything the author wrote. Flowers of Evil is the first book in the Hani’s Daughter Mysteries series, a spin-off from the Lord Hani series of historical mysteries. I really enjoyed the Lord Hani books so was excited to see the story expanding! I’ve particularly liked the times in the past that Neferet has had a substantial role in Lord Hani books, such as Lake of Flowers, so it’s great that she now has her own series!

Like other books by this author, Flowers of Evil presents a vibrant and informative historical world, clearly informed by significant research. It’s so immersive and sensory, with plenty of details about everyday life in Ancient Egypt.

This story combines a murder mystery with Neferet and Bener-ib’s struggles to make it as independent medical practitioners. They are facing prejudice and mistrust, but are desperate to use their skills to help people.

Flowers of Evil gets five stars from me! For fans of the Lord Hani books, this is more of the things you’ve loved and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it! This is also a good starting place for readers who are new to the author.

Sixth grade was a long time ago, so I am glad I read The Evil of Flowers- not only was it a superb mystery, it also refreshed my knowledge of Ancient Egypt. Although I figured out the mystery well before the end, I enjoyed the variety of characters, from young royal doctors to beggars to the poor to the royalty- this book has a little slice of all aspects of the community.

My favorite part of this book was how the doctors used sweets to gain patients- doctors still do this today with youngsters! I also enjoyed how the facts of Egyptian life were interwoven in the story (rather than being weird facts that didn’t flow).

This seems to be the start to a new series and I am so glad. It is a cozy mystery set in Egypt. I love that the author is an archaeologist because it lets me know that the information about Egypt is going to be well researched and accurate. The two main characters are female healers. They were healing the king before he died. He left them with one word before his passing. They are determined to find who killed the king and they know that the word he said was a clue. In addition, the ladies are facing that their competition is doing much to take them down. But this isn’t enough to dissuade them from solving the murder and keep their careers going. I have to say that the author’s greatest talent is in her descriptions of ancient Egypt. She leaves nothing to the imagination and makes sure that there is a glossary for any unfamiliar terms. She paints such a vivid picture with her words that it is easy to forget that you are reading about a time long ago. I definitely recommend reading this. I cannot wait to see more of this series!

Branching from the Lord Hani series, this author writes I was intrigued by the idea of Hani’s daughter taking after her father. Flowers of Evil is the first book in the Hani’s Daughter Mysteries series by N.L Holmes. It is an intriguing new series which is a direct spin-off from The Lord Hani Mystery series that I love, so it was a given that I would be diving into this as soon as it hit my Kindle.
It is a cozy historical mystery, set in ancient Egypt- with plenty of vivid detailing and descriptions which brought everything to life. There is a definite ‘crime and investigation’ aspect to the story, a bit of a murder mystery that has all the ingredients that kept me avidly reading to find out whodunnit.
As I have come to expect from Ms. Holmes, the story is woven with wonderfully rich historical details, texture, depth, interesting characters, intrigue, suspense, dramatic developments, and emotion—- which made for an engrossing read.
This first instalment certainly sets this new series off to a really great start, and if it is anything to go by, Hani has some stiff competition.
Looking forward to seeing what adventures await in the next instalment…
Happy Reading…

Thank you, N.L Holmes!

I was so happy to hear that N.L. Holmes created another series in the Lord Hani Mysteries world! I absolutely loved her setting of ancient Egypt and I am truly obsessed with History and mythology! This book took it to the next level and I couldn’t put it down for one second! The relationship between Neferet and Bener-ib is just so pure and beautiful and written in such a realistic way! Every character has such an intense voice, I don’t know how N.L. Holmes does it! I couldn’t have asked for anything more and this book is the perfect one to use when you want to wind down and escape life for a bit! Flowers of Evil also has the perfect amount of suspense and such a well developed story I can’t wait for the next book in this series! Thank you so much N.L Holmes for expanding on this amazing and ancient society! I highly recommend both the Lord Hani and Hani’s Daughter mystery series to anyone like me, who is a sucker for wonderful mystery, history, and mythology all rolled into one! Flowers of Evil (Hani's Daughter Mysteries Book 1)Flowers of Evil by N.L. Holmes

This is a fairly new author to me, I’ve read one other book that she’s written, but she is becoming a favorite! N.L. Holmes writes stories with Egyptian backgrounds, not something I’m accustomed to reading about but thought I would give this a try. I’m glad I did!

Neferet and Bener-ib are two women healers. In their time and custom, this was virtually unheard of. However, they are pretty talented and have served their king prior to branching out on their own. Business is slow until a man is brought to their doorstep who was mortally wounded and there was nothing that they could do to save him. All they know is that his dying word was “rabbet”. Neferet, not one to step down from a challenge is now also putting on an investigator hat along with her healer hat to find the person who took this man’s life.

Along the way, the ladies learn that their competition is spreading bad omens about them and trying to steer people away from their healing practice. Neferet and Bener-ib come up with ways to spur business to their side of the aisle. This shows their perserverance and it will pay off. I’m looking forward to more books in this series.

There is a fairly extensive glossary of terms and a directory of people in the beginning of this book. I found that super helpful as I’m not well versed in Egyptian history and there are some historically named characters in here. Also words like “sunet” (healer) are defined. This gave me a much better appreciation for the book before I even began reading it.

NL has given us a brand-new series to enjoy which is a spinoff of the The Lord Hani Mysteries. Flowers of Evil is the first book in the Hani’s Daughter Mysteries series.
Set in Ancient Egypt this mystery is full of rich and vibrant historical details, passion and vivid descriptions of a time from long ago but brought to life by NL’s loving care. I enjoy learning just that little bit more history about Ancient Egypt with each story NL shares.
It would not be the exciting tale without all the intrigue and mystery, drama and secrets, lies and danger and that is just what NL gives her readers.
Nefereti and her friend find themselves between a rock and a hard place but decide to take matters into their own hands to try to find a killer. With evil lurking unfortunately, trouble comes knocking and danger is the name of the game.
This suspenseful tale sees our characters having to deal with murder, scepticism, malice, a rival healer and much more.
You will not be disappointed in this new series. I look forward to the next adventure.

This is the first book in the Hani’s Daughter Mysteries series and it’s very well written. The historical details are amazing and really amplify the great writing in this book. I didn’t realise when I first started reading that the author was an archaeologist, now I know, it’s so obvious – how could they not be?

The author’s writing style flows well, and this paired with their in-depth knowledge really paints the scene and makes for a brilliant immersive story. The characters are also well-constructed and felt real and alive.

I was hooked beginning to end, finding more questions as my earlier ones received answers and I loved it! I absolutely love a good mystery and this one was exactly what I needed. I can’t wait for the rest of the series, if the rest is anything like this one it’ll be brilliant!

Flowers of Evil is Book One in the Hani’s Daughter Mysteries Series. The story centers around the characters of Bener-ib and Neferet who have set up a medicinal dispensary for the poor people of Egypt. Unfortunately, they discover that nobody trusts them, and their business is failing. When a dying man is brought to them for care Neferet and Bener-ib realize he was murdered. Neferet becomes determined to solve the mystery of the man’s murder and ends up involving her family in something far more sinister than she was anticipating. This book was well written and the author’s attention to detail about ancient Egypt and its culture really drew me in. The characters were relatable, likable, and I found myself rooting for them throughout the story. This was a great historical cozy mystery and I look forward to reading more in this series.

An entertaining historical cozy mystery drama which had me hooked throughout. Set in ancient Egypt and two women, Neferet and Bener-ib open a medical dispensary. Neferet is the daughter of Hani, who features in another series by the author, which I also thoroughly enjoyed. The first patient is a dying florist of Amen whose last words are very mysterious. Neferet and Bener-ib need to find the killer in order to appease the ba of the murder victim. However, they have to deal with the skepticism of their own families, as well as the malice of a rival healer. Luckily, their teenage apprentice turns out to be a natural detective. The women soon discover that in trying to do the right thing they have put themselves in danger. I love Neferet and Bener-ib as the main characters, they are so well defined that I felt like I knew them! The descriptive narrative brought the setting vividly to life, making me feel immersed in the story, and the added historical details transported me to ancient Egypt. The notes at the beginning of the book were very interesting and set the scene for the story, and I found the list of characters helpful. Flowers of Evil (Hani's Daughter Mysteries Book 1)Flowers of Evil by N.L. Holmes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really loved these books. I’ve loved this author’s work since the first book. Their knowledge of ancient Egyptian history and all the intricate details are amazing and captivating and really brings this story to life.
This is the first book in the Hani’s Daughter’s Mysteries series.
In this story we are with Neferet and Bener-ib. They have moved and set up their own place to provide medical aid to the poorer people who wouldn’t normally have access to it. However things go the way they planned as no one comes to them. They don’t understand why people are so skeptical of them and untrusting of their care. They think by approaching a fellow practitioner they could find a way of sharing the load but how wrong they were.
Add to this intense rivalry a unsolved murder. When a man is brought into their care dying it is clear he was murdered. But why would someone want to kill a florist? Who is responsible for this murder? Neferet is her father’s daughter so she embarks on trying to solve this mystery as well as ward off the danger that comes to them from their rival practitioner.
This story is action packed and the indepth knowledge the author has about Ancient Egypt really brings these stories to life for me.

Flowers of Evil (Hani's Daughter Mysteries Book 1)Flowers of Evil by N.L. Holmes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I found this book to be quite enjoyable. The characters were quite unique and relatable even being based in the Egyptian ancient times. The cozy mystery was really a nice twist. Having the girls figuring it out was a nice plot because it showed them being strong and persevering through the challenges that came their way. The premise was a really good story. I look forward to reading more in this series.
