My Big Red Monster (Giants and Monsters) Review by Heidi Woodring

My Big Red Monster (Giants and Monsters) is a children’s book by Lois Wickstrom and it was a good read. I was able to set my grandson on my lap and read it to him. We loved that the book taught a valuable lesson to the readers as things are not always what they appear. The monster truly is not that scary and together they were able to go on an adventure in the city.
Lois Wickstrom truly gave children a book that helps them learn about overcoming fear, building friendships, and makes it fun for children to read. The illustration in the book was also amazing and very well done! We loved the book and highly recommend.

Colleen’s dad has a very important job – he holds up the sky! Unfortunately, the townsfolk don’t understand or appreciate what he does and he is bullied. This is my first book by Wickstrom but I love how she built into a lesson without taking away from magic and adventure. The illustrations were adorable – I loved this little book!

This is another wonderful story by Lois Wickstrom! Holding Up the Sky is a great story that helps children understand difficult subjects like bullying, inclusion, making peace with those you may not agree with, etc. The tale is told in such a way that it’s interesting to kids and should hold their attention while also delivering an important message. The illustrations were artistic and easy to follow as well. This is a great story for kids of various school ages!

This was such a cute story! Lois Wickstrom has dealt with such heavy topics as bullying and believing someone is being truthful in such a fun and creative way. I really loved how Colleen tried to make friends with the kids who made fun of her dad and her instead of retaliating. I have read several books by this author, but I do believe this is my favorite by far. I love how she always incorporates a lesson or fun learning opportunity into her stories. Her books are both whimsical and educational without feeling like a textbook or boring lecture and this one is no different. I honestly can’t wait to see what she comes up with next and how Nicolàs Milano will illustrate it. This artist has illustrated several of her books and they are all so colorful and appealing to the eye, drawing me even more into the story. I also really admire the way that they incorporate all different kinds of characters with different ethnicities, disabilities, and abilities into their stories and renderings. This book should be in the hands of every child as it conveys such great life lessons within a fun rhyming storyline.

My son and I read Holding Up the Sky together. It’s a good book for elementary school age (he is 7). We liked the rhyming, as it made the book flow and have a bit of Dr Seuss vibe. Like many of this author’s book, it has a good message to the kids- Do not be quick to judge. Colleen is teased for saying her dad holds up the sky. She figures out a way to prove it to everyone, and learns a little about herself at the same time. The pictures are colorful and fun.

Another lovely book from the author. The story line was engaging, and the illustrations were colourful and bright.

As usual there is a lesson to be learned from this author’s stories and this one is an important one. Treating people with kindness no matter what they look like.

The story is fun and easy as well as being educational/thought provoking for children.

Holding up the Sky
By: Lois Wickstrom

This is another wonderful children’s story with really cute illustrations written by Lois Wickstrom. As with all of her books, they have really wonderful characters with a story line that teaches the readers a lesson. This story focuses on how people perceive others. Colleen’s dad is huge and it seems that he has been given the task of holding up the sky. Because of his giant size people are not always very kind to him. One day, her dad puts down his hands and what ensues is a wonderful lesson on how we treat people. I definitely recommend this as it has such a wonderful message!

Colleen’s Dad walks around with his hands in the air, declaring that he is holding up the sky. Colleen loves her Dad and doesn’t like when kids make fun of her or her Dad. One day, Colleen’s Dad puts his hands down. Is he really holding the sky?

While reading, I was confused because I wanted to know if her father was really holding the sky.
When he took his arms down and just started relaxing in the grass looking up, I predicted that either his daughter would take over for him, or he wasn’t really holding the sky, it was more used as a metaphor. I wanted to know if he was really holding the sky or not.

I enjoyed the artwork and the different opinions of the people around them as well as the people’s thoughts and opinions changed over the course of the story.

It was very cute, but is also shows bullying and name calling and how these affect others. It also shows initiative with Colleen who wants others to get to know her Dad.

This was another cute kid’s story, the lessons that are taught in these story’s are so wonderful to teach kids in a different way. This book is about bullying, and name calling. All the kids are bulling colleen’s dad which in turn makes her sad. Everyone is laughing at him and saying what her was doing wasn’t right and that there isn’t a need for him to do it. But colleen decides that she wants to make it right, so she makes a plan that her dad must put his hands down and some things start to happen. So, was he really holding the sky up? This book was suer cute, and I loved the story it tells, the pictures and illustrations make it come to life not just in the words. Being kind, helpful, understanding, no judging, are all things everyone should learn to do. This was a quite wonderful read.

This is a cute, imaginative story about Colleen and her dad. Most little girls think their daddys can do anything. Colleen’s dad can. He’s a giant and he holds up the sky. Problem is , no one believes her. Colleen tries to think of a way to show everyone what he can do. When he lets go, things start happening. Read the book and find out what happens. The story is fun to read and has colourful pictures to enthral the children. I love reading this author’s books.

Holding up the Sky is part of the Giants and Monsters series by this superbly talented author. Colleen’s dad is a giant who walks around all day holding up the sky. The townsfolk think this is ridiculous and make fun of her dad to Colleen by telling her that her dad needs to get a job. Colleen’s feelings are hurt from being mocked all the time by the other kids as well as their parents, so she comes up with an idea for the kids to get to know her dad. The idea, however, involves her dad putting his hands down and once he does weird things start to happen. Was Colleen’s dad really holding up the sky? What will happen when he puts his hands down? This was a cute, entertaining, and funny story with beautiful, bright illustrations that really make the story come to life. As with all this author’s books the story contained messages for children to learn from. In this book children will learn about being kind, helpful, understanding, compassionate, and about not judging someone based on their appearance. A wonderful read that I highly recommend!

This book was a fun read and I enjoyed reading it. It was a cute story that showed children that being different is not a bad thing. The story showed the whole town was able to come to an understanding of just how important Colleen’s dad was in maintaining their world. It is a good story and I recommend it for anyone who has children who want to read.

I have read many of Lois’s books, and this one is just as cute with underlining messages. Holding Up has both a giant and monsters, and through the story, teaches the importance of not bullying or name calling, and persevering and being each others’ champions. I liked how the character holding up the sky could be anyone’s dad and not a super hero physique.

A felt the book was a little wordy for the youngest crowds, but ages 4 and up should appreciate the story. The colorful illustrations add to, and not distract, from the story.

Holding Up the Sky (Giants and Monsters) by Lois Wickstrom. I love this author so much. She always writes the cutest stories and they all have a lesson in them. This one is about Colleen and her dad who is very tall and whose job it is to hold up the sky or at least that’s what everyone thinks. People are scared of her dad because he is so big! Colleen just wants everyone to love her dad and not be afraid of him so she decides to have a party so everyone can see the dad she loves. While at the party her dad lets his hands down to play with the kids and strange things begin to happen. Read this fun, cute book that teaches us that just because someone looks different doesn’t mean they are bad. My 5 year old nephew loves this book and they make great gifts as well.

Myself and my kids were so excited to see we had another Lois Wickstrom book to read and it was put straight to the top of the list. This was a great and colourful story, that was entertaining and educational. The topic of the book is one that most kids will experience in one way or another and I think the author has done a great job of touching on this in a sensitive and refreshing way.
The pictures throughout the book really help my kids attention. They have loved to look at them in conjunction with the story and they enjoyed the whole book. This was another success in our house and we are already looking forward to the next.

I thought the story was simple enough for young children to read and understand. My 6 year old grasped the meaning easily and was very engaged. It just seemed to end abruptly. That’s my only complaint. The artwork was lovely. The meaning behind the story was good. I’d recommend this book.

This author is just brilliant with children’s books!
This book you meet Colleen and her dad. Her dad is a giant and holds up the sky as his job. People fear this giant man and claim he’s making up his story about holding up the sky.
Colleen decides to have a party for all the townsfolk who are scared of her dad. Her dad let’s his hands down for a minute during this party and people learn that he is not a scary cruel giant but just another person like them.
Very cute story with lots of good educational lessons built in

This is a really cute story about Colleen and her dad and his job of holding up the sky. Colleen’s friends and their parents don’t actually believe that her dad holds up the sky so she invites them over to see. They still don’t believe her so her dad stops holding up the sky and begins to play with them. Nothing immediately beings to happen so Colleen begins to doubt her dad; however, subtle things start to go wrong so Colleen has to fix it. I really enjoy how Wickstrom is always able to weave life lessons into her stories. The illustrations for this book are fantastic as well.

What a fun story with colorful illustrations that catch your eye. I also loved the rhyming as the story of Colleen and her Dad really drew me in.

All Colleen wants to do is have her friends love her dad as much as she does, but due to him being giant sized, he is more feared. Once Colleen’s friends get to know her dad….there is much fun to be had!! What happens after awhile that Colleen’s dad no longer is holding up the sky?

Fun story for all ages and I just love this author’s imaginative stories. Highly recommended.

I loved the art in this book, the aesthetic is so pleasing. The story is cute, I enjoyed the rhyming and the Giant controlling whether or not the sky falls. Colleen was brave to take her dad’s place to try and help. I think the visuals alone will draw kids in, and then the story will help them fall in love with book. Colleen’s dad may seem to others, not to have a “real” job but, the neighbors can all go about their days not worrying about the sky thanks to the giant.

Holding up the Sky (Giants and Monsters) is a wonderfully written children’s book that children will love reading. One thing I love most about this author is every one of her books teaches us a lesson of some sort. This one teaches us to work together and not be fearful of those who may be different. My son loved this book a lot. Collen thinks her dad holds up the sky no one in town believes that he does. But what will happen when he puts his hands down? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next . We look forward to reading more from this Author.

The book is aimed at children aged between 4 to 8 years. Lois’s narrative and the bright and colourful illustrations by Nicolás Milano help make this picture book a fun story.

Holding Up the Sky by Lois Wickstrom is another of her cute children’s stories. It has bright, colourful, and interesting illustrations that accompany the story, which help to bring everything to life.
This is a bit of an adventure with a few messages/lessons along the way. With some fantasy and a touch of drama, it makes for an engaging and fun read- feeding both the imagination, as well as imparting messages on kindness, cooperation, helpfulness, not to be fearful, and not jumping to conclusions or judging a book by its cover.

Happy reading!
