The Reluctant Suitor is a BWWM Contemporary Western Romance in The Studs of Clear Creek County Series . I’m a huge fan of Historical Romance and this definitely checked the boxes. This authors style of writing and attention to detail along with fully developed characters make for a epic story. This author sheds light on topics that may be otherwise difficult for some. This story shows us how Caucasian and African American relationships are frowned upon. Get ready to be taken on quite the emotional journey in this forbidden lover’s story. It’s a short yet fast paced story that will leave you wanting more. How far are you willing to fight for happiness and what is most important to you ? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I’m looking forward to reading more from this Author.

The Reluctant Suitor (The Studs of Clear Creek County) by Stacy-Deanne. This is a good short, historical story about Billie Jean Willis who is visiting her cousins on their farm in 1895. Billie Jean is looked on as a troublemaker because she is one of the very few women to attend college. When she sees how some of her people are being treated she is not one to back down from fighting for what is right for them. When she meets Fisher who is the supervisor of all the people that Billie Jean feels are being treated poorly she wants to hate him but they are drawn together. Fisher comes from a wealthy family and wants to make his family proud but he can’t help his attraction to Billie Jean. Will they be able to come to an agreement and make things better for the worker and build a relationship or will they just never see eye to eye? Read this awesome historical romance to find out!

The Reluctant Suitor is a contemporary romance novella which is part of The Studs of Clear Creek County series. While it can be read as a standalone, the characters are best understood when read in order. The Reluctant Suitor is Fisher and Billie Jean’s story in the series.
Fisher Hines is wealthy and he does all he can to earn the respect of his family. Overseeing the employees at Locke Farm is one way to keep their respect and propel himself forward in their eyes.
Billie Jean is visiting family in Clear Creek County from college. What she never expected was to fall for Fisher when she visited home. Billie Jean finds herself conflicted after learning that Fisher works for Locke Farm. She is determined to do what is best for her family and the Black people who work for Locke Farm and she’ll do it with or without Fisher’s help.
Stacy-Deanne does a good job tackling the tough issues. The story between Billie Jean and Fisher was partially eclipsed by what was happening with Sue Ann. I would have preferred more development between Billie Jean and Fisher, but still found it to be a good story overall.

Billie Jean Wills, an African American college who never could walk away from a fight. One day, while riding the family horse, Billie Jean gets saved after being thrown from the spooked horse by the handsome Fisher Hines. While visiting her family in Clear Creek County she learns how the black men are being treated over at the Locke farm and along with her cousin Greta Fay they create quite the stir of trouble. While confronting Mr. Locke, Billie Jean learns that the man whole stole her heart was none other than the manager of the farm! Days before the rally the Locke farm catches fire. Of course, the girls get blamed for the fire but neither one committed the crime. This action-packed book comes with lots of angst, anger, frustration, challenges, sex appeal, and chemistry. It is a fantastic book that is part of an excellent series. I can’t wait to read other books by this great author.

Well this story took me by surprise. I normally do not read Historical stories. But this one caught my eye and thought I would give it a try. I am so happy I did. It was such a well written story that kept me turning the pages until the end. I love that Billie Jean is such a strong independent woman with the courage to fight for her people, family and friends alike. Then there is Fisher Locke who wants to show his parents what he is made of. Two strong attractive people who know what they are feeling is wrong. Two independent people who are fighting for what is right. Who is right, Billie or Fisher? What will happen next for them? Read this story to find out what happens. While this story could be a standalone,I felt it is in my best interest to read the series. This author writes fast paced, page turners with plenty of history. Great Story!!!!!

Billie Jean is fighting for the rights of her people, family and friends but there is one thing standing in her way and that is the Locke Farm. Although when she meets the son Fisher there is something between them that both of the can’t resist but know that it is forbidden.
Fisher Locke has finally has a chance to prove himself to his parents but when he see her for the first time he is instantly drawn to her, but as they start to develop feelings for each other , can they survive the backlash or will they be destined to be apart forever.
I have read other books in this series and although there is some crossover with other stories you can easily read this book as a stand alone story. I loved the chemistry between these two characters and the emotional push and pull is great to read. With this historical storyline it is great to read about such strong females characters in an era where woman, especially black woman really had no say in the world but determined to make a difference these woman fight with there lives for justice and freedom.
This is a brilliant story which will have you engrossed and turning the pages until the end.

I’ve really been enjoying these stories by this author. I find them really easy to read and they have great characters. I love the time period that these stories take place in, so much struggle goes on in these times with regards to interracial relationships and I love that the author tackles this with such amazing story lines and characters. I loved Billie Jean! She certainly was not afraid to stand up for what she believed. She had a great confidence and independence about her that made her so amazing to read about. She definitely didn’t see Fisher coming along though! There was this instant attraction between them that was definitely undeniable and I really enjoyed seeing them evolve as a couple and navigate the barriers of that time period when it came to their relationship.

This book is another great addition to an already enjoyable series. it was the characters in this book that pulled me and kept me reading until the end. They had a great connection from the moment they met and I enjoyed watching it develop as the story went on. I wasn’t familiar with this author before I started reading this series but I have enjoyed each and every story so far. They are engaging and interesting. Each story is different to the last but pulls you in just the same. This is a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Before that can happen an invitation arrives to a party. Emma is immediately suspicious-why were they invited, why was it in Chicago and not New York City? Is Emma overreacting or is something up at the party?
This was a good, contemporary romance and part of The Studs of Clear Creek County series and can be read as a standalone or read in order. Fisher and Billie Jean’s story gave me angst, fight for equality, romance, forbidden love and drama.
Fisher Hines comes from a wealthy family and overseeing the employees at Locke Farm as a supervisor. Fisher wants to make his family proud, especially coming from the society their circle is in. Expectation of meeting the high standards of his family, Fisher never expected to fall for Billie Jean, especially when their worlds are totally different.
Billie Jean is visiting family in Clear Creek County and never expected to take to Fisher Hines the way she did. When Billie Jean finds that Fisher works for Locke Farm, she tries to stay away as she feels that her people are mistreated in ways that are hard to speak about. As Billie Jean’s barrier and reluctance fades, she finds herself falling for Fisher. What happens when Billie Jean wages war against Locke Farm even against Fisher’s wishes and warnings?
This is a good story and the author does a very good job when it comes to tackling hard issues. I would have loved to have more of Billie Jean and Fisher’s story develop. Overall good story and I always look forward to this author’s books.

This isn’t my first book by this author and certainly won’t be the last! I found this book surprising me as it wasn’t what I had initially expected. The cover drew me in at first, and then the synopsis sold me, so I gave it a chance. I loved the way the author told the story because it felt like I was there right along with Neferet and Bener-ib. The only thing that gave me any issue at all with this book was that I had other things to do, but I could NOT put this down! I had to finish it as it was such an addictive mystery with so much adventure tied in. I loved the Egyptian background and the depth of the characters as it made the world real for me. I highly recommend taking a chance on this book so you can go on this marvelous mysterious adventure too!

Ancient Egypt. Hook line and sinker. This is the first book I have read by N.L. Holmes and my oh my, I look forward to the next one. The cover pulled me in, I have been obsessed with ancient Egypt since I was about eight years old so coming across this historical mystery was a dream come true. Two of my favorite things Egypt and mystery, yes please. Immediately I loved the map of ancient Egypt, the character list and the glossary at the beginning as a refresher and to prepare me for what was to come. Neferet and Bener-ib are sunets (doctors), while only twenty-four their credentials are great, having trained under the physician of the Royal Ornaments, and were royal physicians themselves before Neferet’s dream was given a chance. She had always wanted to offer all proper medical care. Unfortunately, they have a local rival sunu, Djed-har. Quickly after officially meeting him Neferet can piece together that he is a fraud that feels women should not be physicians and that their credentials are only in their dreams. Not being one to back down the women are determined to gain the favor of the people to come to them in times of need. Finally, a patient, while initially happy they have a patient, things turn somber and mysterious too fast. The man dies, his last words “Sekhat. Rabbit.”, confused the women are determined to find out who murdered the Bearer of the Devine Offerings. A man that made such beautiful things targeted and murdered, for a reason. But why? Two mysteries. How to sway the people to trust them? Who killed an innocent man who made beautiful bouquets for Amen? The chills that crawled my spine at the level of details the author includes made me so excited to keep going. Not only is the mystery well thought out, but the lives of the characters are beyond relatable even if there is a stark time difference. They are everyday people in their time trying to do their best, make a living and set keep the world balanced. I must go back and read the original Hani mysteries while waiting for book two of the Hani’s Daughters Mysteries. I cannot get enough of this author’s blend of historical ancient Egypt and mystery.

Neferet and Bener-ib are two young ladies with a very unusual occupation, they are medical professionals and is Egypt, this is practically unheard of, they have trained for half their lives so that they could open up their own practice, the only issue is that people are very wary of them and tend to steer clear. This infuriates Neferet, but Bener-ib just becomes disheartened, neither of them however, are going to give up on their dream, so Neferet takes matters into her own hands and looks for the reason why they are not receiving any patients.
Neferet is stubborn and once she has her mind set on something, nothing will sway her from the path she has decided to take and this path is no other, she has decided to pay a visit to the other medical professional in the area and see if they can’t come to some kind of arrangement. It soon becomes clear that this will be an impossibility as soon as she speaks to them, the terms of endearment used and the manner of which she is spoken to raises her hackles and she soon decides that it isn’t worth any more of her time, so she heads back to the practice.
This was not to be a peaceful morning because there is a frantic banging on the gate and frenzied shouts for aid, do they spring into action and see the patient, however, they ultimately realise that they will not be able to save him and offer their condolences to his wife when he does pass. As the story of the injuries unfolds, it becomes clear that this was a murder and of a high class person at that, it turns out that they were the head florist at the temple of the Aten and therefore, not someone with many enemies, this is something the two ladies ponder as the clean up the building ready for lunch.
This lunch turns out to be a family gathering of the most joyful sort, but they have an ulterior motive, they want to speak to Neferet’s father about the murder and see if they can get any pointers as how to go about solving it, but they are warned away from for good reason, especially when the danger starts to follow them. Will the two medical professionals be able to solve the crime with the help of their family, or will they be stopped before they can? This is a historical mystery where danger lies in the shadows and discoveries are made which could make or break fates and lives as this tangled web is sorted through.

Flowers of Evil is the first book in the new Hani’s daughter mysteries series by N.L. Holmes. It follows Neferet and Bener-ib – two young Egyptian sunets (or physicians) as they try to untangle the mystery of the brutal stabbing of a local florist. It includes a rowdy cast of characters and rival sunu intent on driving our heroines out if business.
I’ve never read any of the original mystery series by Holmes but found this to be a solid read without the context provided there. It was a well-written with many renderings of Ancient Egypt that were both imaginative and shaped by real knowledge of the culture. If you like mysteries and diving into Ancient society then this is definitely for you!

I have always had an obsession with history, particularly Ancient Egypt. I find knowledge of ancient times fascinating, and I jumped when I saw the description of what this book entails – not to mention, the author. I have read this author’s work before and have fallen deep, deep down into the story without much trying. I read a lot of historical fiction – it’s my thing – and I can wholeheartedly admit that this author is one of the best at it. It is evident that this author is not only a talented storyteller, but quite knowledgeable about the subjects of her stories. She is a professional archaeologist who has done excavations and taught ancient history, just to name a few things, so this book is dripping with vibrant details and nuances that pull you right in. I also gravitate towards strong female leads, and Neferet and Bener-ib are fantastic. Holmes’ experience as an educator is also evident in the Historical Notes and lists of terms, characters, and gods offered at the beginning of the book, which sets the reader right into the place and time. I can’t recommend this book, and author, enough!

This is the first book in the Hani’s Daughter Mysteries series and my first time reading this Amazing authors creations. To say I am hooked would be an understatement. This may be my first read but it definitely will not be my last. Set in Ancient Egypt this story truly comes to life in your minds eye as you read thanks to such vivid descriptions that have you feeling like you are really there. Full of mystery and intrigue….I think that is the word I am after… you will be kept turning page after page as you follow Neferet and Berer-ib as they try to find a killer. Of course this means danger follows and you will be kept captivated from start to finish.

This is my first book by this author, and I gotta say, I’m impressed. The amount of details she poured into this book is phenomenal. This book is a clear labor of love, and it was a very good book as well. I loved the story line of it all, and I also really enjoyed the ending and the book as a whole. It’s a shorter book to my standards, which is fine, but the writing on it is so detailed that I still had to take my time with it and observe everything the author wrote. If you love history and mystery, I highly recommend!

Short historical romance 3.5 stars This quick read is the fifth book in the Studs of Clear Creek County Series. It’s a historical romance based in western times when interracial relationships were unacceptable. There’s forbidden love, age-gap, interracial relations, class divides and more within the story. An enjoyable and engaging contemporary western style romance which kept me happily turning the pages. The storyline features an interracial relationship between college educated Billie Jean Wills and the wealthy Fisher Hines. When Billie Jean finds out that the blacks at the Locke Farm are working under horrible conditions she decides to fight for their rights, along with her cousin Greta Fay. However, to force any real change in their small town they have to take on one of the most powerful families, the Lockes. Billie Jean did not expect to feel an instant connection with the supervisor of Locke Farm, and therefore the enemy, Fisher Hines. Fisher is proud to be the supervisor and has finally gained the admiration of his high society parents, but he can’t deny the feelings he has for Billie Jean. Fisher wants a future and a chance at true love with Billie Jean, but by her going up against the Lockes it threatens everything that not only him but his family has worked for. The small town setting was really brought to life through the descriptive narrative as were the characters. The chemistry between Billie Jean and Fisher sizzled off the page, and I liked how their relationship developed despite several barriers, including race, an age gap and forbidden love. The author is not afraid to tackle some major issues and does so sensitively. An entertaining read, and one which I recommend.

This is an author that I never hesitate to pick up and she never lets me down in the romance department. This is one of my favorites by her for sure. I enjoyed reading this romance story about how far are you willing to go to fight for what is right along with the willingness to fight for happiness. Billie Jean and Fischer are great characters that are strong, supportive and connectable. They pull you into their world with ease and keep you there until the end. They have great growth throughout. Their chemistry and attraction made me want to know more about them and what fate has in store for them. I found their story to be fast paced and hard to put down. A story you don’t want to miss. I really enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it.

This is part of the Studs of Clear Creek County series where each book can be read as a standalone. This historical romance book follows Billie and Fisher and the ‘journey’ to each other’s arms.
I have enjoyed this series; the books are short but not lacking in content. There are tough issues included in the book which are important to note even now, and I like the fact that author includes this in their books.
I enjoy the authors writing style and the way the characters are portrayed and actions described. It adds to my enjoyment of the book as it adds personality to each of the characters.
I look forward to what the author brings out next!

The Reluctant Suitor is the fifth book in The Studs of Clear Creek County Series by Stacy-Deanne. This is a BWWM (interracial)- historical- small town- western romance with forbidden lovers, age gap, blackmail, a tormented hero a bit of an enemies to lovers aspect, chemistry, challenges, drama, emotion, choices, fighting for what’s right, staying true to yourself, following your heart, racial challenges, inequality, and finding love unexpectedly. This is a novella length story, which made for a very quick and easy read. And as I say with most of her shorter stories, I really would have liked to have read a longer version of this, with more detail, depth, and development- which would have allowed me to really immerse myself into the story and connect with the characters and their story much more- I’m greedy like that. This story sees Billie Jean take on one of the largest and most powerful landholder families about the working/living conditions of their workers. As she gears up for a fight in order to ensure her message is heard and acceptable changes are made, the last thing she expects, or needs right then, is to start to fall for the enemy- in the form of the wealthy property supervisor Fisher Hines. That will definitely cause problems, for both of them. Will love win out in the end? Or will the flames of love be doused by the challenges they face? The Reluctant Suitor is a BWWM contemporary western romance in The Studs of Clear Creek County series. This historical romance sheds light on a time when Caucasians and African American relationships were frowned upon. Stacy-Deanne does not shy away from the tough topics when it comes to interracial matters. This African American tale is a quick and easy engaging read and is a forbidden lover’s romance story. There is an age gap but when it comes to love it doesn’t matter. Set in a small-town, Billie Jean fights for those who can’t or won’t. If she sees something she doesn’t like. He is proud of his achievements, but unexpected love will make him do crazy things, or does it? Grab your copy to find out. There is lots of angst, anger, frustration, challenges, sex appeal and chemistry between our characters. The characters are well-written, and they did make for a interesting story. I am looking forward to seeing what Stacy-Deanne brings next.

Flowers of Evil is the first book in the Hani’s Daughter Mysteries series, a spin-off from the Lord Hani series of historical mysteries. I really enjoyed the Lord Hani books so was excited to see the story expanding! I’ve particularly liked the times in the past that Neferet has had a substantial role in Lord Hani books, such as Lake of Flowers, so it’s great that she now has her own series!
Like other books by this author, Flowers of Evil presents a vibrant and informative historical world, clearly informed by significant research. It’s so immersive and sensory, with plenty of details about everyday life in Ancient Egypt.
This story combines a murder mystery with Neferet and Bener-ib’s struggles to make it as independent medical practitioners. They are facing prejudice and mistrust, but are desperate to use their skills to help people.
Flowers of Evil gets five stars from me! For fans of the Lord Hani books, this is more of the things you’ve loved and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it! This is also a good starting place for readers who are new to the author.

Different type of story The first book in the Hani’s Daughter Mystery series, Flowers of Evil is an engaging tale. Set in ancient Egypt the author takes the reader on a mysterious adventure. There’s murder, danger, drama and secrets all centred around a crime. The writing was engaging, with well developed characters and imagery that painted pictures of the past. I am interested to see what the next book entails. Recommend.
