This was a lovely and endearing story and one that I really enjoyed. The author transported me back in time with her beautiful writing and descriptive language. Emma is a great character to read about, so inquisitive for her age. I enjoyed reading about her. The author really does have a wonderful writing style that keeps you engaged the whole way through the book. The characters were well thought out and I think this was really evident with Emma’s character, she was so much more than just your average 16 year old from that time period. She was really refreshing to read about and I loved that about her. I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Two of my favorite things are: the holidays and the supernatural. So, of course, I love Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, and I love this book. Historical fiction with a twist of mystery and suspense, this book is just as good as the others in this series. Emma has been one of my favorite lead characters since I picked up the first book. This book did not last long enough for my taste, but, they never do. I would suggest reading the previous books in this series – only because they are fabulous, and it will be worth your time. However, if you are looking for a story that will scoop you up and drop you into the 19th century, you could read this as a standalone, as well, and be just fine. This book could be a thousand pages long, and I would probably still complain it wasn’t long enough. Highly recommend!

The start of something good I have loved every book in this series. Unfortunately I read all the others before this one but that just means I will have to read them all again – lol! It was so great to see where it all began. Emma is a brilliant character – strong willed, full of inspiration and desire to help others. The book has suspense, drama and mysteries to be solved and 16 year old Emma is right at the forefront ready to do some sleuthing. The world building is excellent with the imagery of the township and townspeople so vividly depicted. Even though each book is a new mystery I highly recommend that the series be read in order as there are ongoing threads that develop throughout the series.

Set in post civil war Chicago this fun, adventurous novel is the first in this series. I have read several of the books in this series and decided after the last one that I should go back and read them in order and include the beginning of Emma’s story in that. I absolutely love this series! The characters are very well developed (even the secondary characters) and you will love, hate, laugh and cry with them. If you haven’t read this series it is so worth your time and if you have read some in this series but not in order it is so worth your time to go back and do it in order!

Notebook Mysteries: Emma is the first book in the Notebook Mysteries series. We meet Emma when she is 16 years old living in Chicago with her Father, older sister, and extended family. She works in the family bakery while longing for adventure. As she observes the different goings on around her she finds herself being pulled into more and more adventure; and some danger. I loved that Ms. Mullins also includes recipes from the bakery in the book. You get to learn about Emma’s unfortunate background and see her relationship with her sister and father. This is a fun and wonderful start to the Notebook Mysteries series.

Always drawn to the river nearby, the heroine traverses from childhood into womanhood throughout the story. The main character is neurodivergent, and so is often viewed as a witch by those around her. Though at times, the story seems like it might meander like a river, the author manages to skillfully control both the fantasy and the historical streams of her book. Readers are able to glimpse life through the lens of a strong female character in an era when women had strict roles imposed on them. Heartache, personal growth, and forgiveness are themes of this book.
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Just when I was hoping to read the best things for the Agneson Clan, I am left in a series of cliffhangers for each family member, and I am grieving for the deaths that have occurred. This amazing series takes place in the Viking Era around the year 880 and can I just say is full of history, love, war, mystery, witchcraft and above all historical lore that transports me to the Viking lands every time I pick up the book. Kara achieves rank and becomes a shieldmaiden but finds out that being a warrior is not at all what she thought it would be. Karl does battle with his ship Verdandi Smiles while at war with a greater navy. Sorven meets a young girl at the end of the book and has fallen deeply in love with her. But will all turn pout well for Sorven? Thorfinn meets up with the witches that he physically damaged and they are out for revenge. Will he survive the witches and their eight-legged monster? And Cub? What is going on with Cub? While Cub escaped slavery, what is he up to now? So many unanswered questions and so much adventure and excitement has taken place in this book. I cannot wait for the next book!!!! What about all the mythical creatures that have come to play in this book and the lore of the Vikings that is prevalent on every page?! A must read book!!!

All the covers have been good so far but this one is my favourite and I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve watched Emma grow and we’ve been on a journey or if it’s because the smell of Christmas is in the air it could even be a combination ❣️📕
Again Emma and her friends are at it again , find a killer , solve a murder and still enjoy Christmas . There was a “ Christmas Carol” vibe to it and it added to the wonder of our Emma and her mystery solving friends ….
This is one I’ll read again closer to Christmas while nibbling on a mince pie and sipping eggnog ❣️📕
As the series progresses so do the crimes and this time Emma’s path Color’s sea with those of some rather mean bank robbers so after their ordeal Emma decides a time of rest is in order but soon enough the bug is biting her and she’s hungry for adventure and the case she takes on has her so busy that Jeremy jumps in and helps , both now have their hands full and all is not as it seems ….
This instalment felt a little different to the others , like the pace was a little faster and the read was a little more intense , does that make sense ?
I’ve really enjoyed each book but this one really has captured my attention and a wee Tim favourite this far ❣️📕
I’ve read other books in this series, and they are all wonderful! Having finally read the first of the series, I am still firmly a fan of this author. I enjoyed the setting of the story- Chicago in the post Civil War era. Characters struggle to right wrongs amidst Chicago’s infamous corruption. Our protagonist also learns that she must trust people, and not always rush to judgment.

Once upon a time, in Big Magic Elizabeth Gilbert supposed that ideas pass from one author to another until someone allows them to be born through their writing. This book offers us an alternate solution: that the same ideas ride the wild hunt of human intellect and are born in multiple iterations for our evaluation and determination of preference.
River Witch is an interesting iteration of archetype. Hester pops into our collective consciousness at 8.
If you haven’t read Louisa Morgan’s A Secret History of Witches or Tracy Chevalier’s A Single Thread, this book might find a good space in your library. If you HAVE read those two books, caveat emptor. Especially if you’re a teacher, professor, or evaluator of nuances be sure your rubrics are safely ensconced in your briefcase before you start reading.
Younger readers or those who prefer to avoid triggers might be better served by The Remnant Chronicles by Mary E Pearson.

This series is quite interesting to me, as I read 2nd,3rd and 4th books in sequence before and finally came to read the first one. So I have seen Emma at her helm as a matured woman who is quite independent and solves mystery cases, and now come back to read where it all began. So it was good to see Emma, who along with her sister were bored in the bakery. Emma, training under special tutors and finally Emma taking on dangers head on. I really enjoyed “the becoming” very much. This book was more like a prequel to me, and the foundation is set very right for the series which it would be in the next three books.

I had seen someone post on social media about how people are so interested in wild plots that they’ll settle on subpar writing. I wish I remembered the person that stated that because I would hand her a copy of River Witch. The writing in this book was so rich with descriptive language and a strong vocabulary. I felt the imagery was vivid and honestly consider this book a literary work of art. This author is fairly new to me, as is the idea of historical fantasy but as I said above the writing was so beautifully crafted I was sucked in immediately. The characters had depth and I loved that the story followed Hester through time. I am trying to keep my review vague and full of spoilers but this was the perfect reading material as I shift from my summer reading list and into thoughts of fall and “witchery.”
Christmas is a busy time of year for Emma’s family’s business. All the baking orders and decorating for Christmas, there’s barely any free time. When a friend asks for help, Emma cannot refuse him, especially when it involves a haunted house. Strange noises, ghost sightings, and people disappearing all make for an entertaining read. I really enjoy this series and all the recipes from the story that are included. I highly recommend it!

I thought the next installment could not possibly be better than the other books in the series, as they were very fun, great reads and boy was I wrong! This Christmas these mystery story took the cake!! I believe that this books’ storyline of having her getting ready for the holiday and having crime happen, that she did not plan for, made this story that much more fun! Crime waits for no one and while this one was still a great mystery to read, having it be a Christmas theme made it all the more enjoyable to read! I loved reading these stories and I cannot wait to read more by this wonderful author as the writing style was superb!

Wow I cannot begin to even put into words how much I truly enjoyed reading these books. The way the author wrote these books, had me feeling as thought I was on the mystery with them! This was the first book in the series, and it is a great introduction to the series and what it is all about. Reading more and more mystery genres of books have been my go-to lately and this one WAS SO GREAT! If you are looking for a great series to read about mysteries in the past, then this is the series for you!!

River Witch is my first book by this author. I was interested because of the blurb on the cover. I was not disappointed. The story follows Hester, a farmer’s daughter intrigued by the river, Sabrina, and the river nymphs. I liked that this story was a bit magical while having realistic characters. I enjoyed reading how Hester developed into a young woman. The story has twists and is filled with lore and world-building. The story develops slowly and creates a beautiful dialogue between humanity and nature. I look forward to delving into more books by this author soon.
Can you just imagine what a second-generation German bakery must smell like? Sixteen-year-old Emma works in her family’s bakery, and the way the desserts are described makes me long for a scratch-n-sniff right there on the page. They make German Chocolate Cake, German Butter Cake with Egg Liquor, Berliner Pfannkuchen, Snickerdoodles, and more. Honestly, I had to look up a few of the desserts named in the book to get a visual. Kimberly Mullins was even nice enough to put the recipes in the back of the book!
Look at me jumping to the food. Let me tell you about this brilliantly engaging story of Emma and her escapades. Emma is very observant, and smart. She writes in her little black notebooks of all the happenings of each day. She has someone following her every move, and that is when that mystery grabbed my attention. When she is not working in the bakery, she is helping with the deliveries, and this is where another mystery begins. Let me just say that this story is full of other stories. There are mysteries (yes, plural), a bit of romance, an eighty-year-old that teaches her to throw knives to protect herself, and family secrets that come to light.
You cannot go wrong with this book! Please excuse me while I go get the second book in this series.

I thought this was an easy-to-read, enjoyable book. I loved the twists and turns, with some fantasy, mythological, and historical elements. The world-building was fantastic and I absolutely loved this author’s writing style!

Kara is the focus of this book, while the other characters from this series also receive highlights throughout. Kara is coming of age and her mother and uncle are trying to find her a suitor. She’s not having the ones they are presenting and decides to run away. It’s the adventures that she faces that we read about in this story. Cub and Thornfinn’s stories are also further developed. There is a lot of action with both of these boys involving trolls, witches, and more! I enjoyed this book and the series so far. I do get a little bogged down in the multitude of characters introduced. Sometimes it’s difficult for me to keep them straight. This book also talks about certain characters at a time but their stories don’t necessarily always meet up with each other. I have a hard time staying focused on what’s happening with everyone with all the switching back and forth. If you enjoy stories about Vikings, this series is for you!

The cover is very misleading. I thought this book would be a quick smash read while reading other books. This is not the case. I love time travel books, but this is more. This is a romance in the present and the past in two different lifetimes. The story takes place in Venice where Nick and Julia visit a museum. Nick begins to hear a voice, a faint voice, calling to him, from a very well-known painting. His wife Julia, is beside herself with confusion and worry for Nick. Throw in a conspiracy and mystery, romance and time travel, and you have yourself one of the best books ever to read. The characters in this story are so easy to get attached to. I loved this book. I cannot wait to read more about them in the coming books.

Nike and Julia head to Venice for vacation. While visiting the palace, Nick finds a painting he really likes by Tintorento. It’s intriguing because Nick hears the voice of a woman speaking from the painting. Then to make it even better, he can understand Venetian and finds he has memories of a past life. This takes Julia and Nick into finding the story of the past which alerts the Venetian Order, who wants the eliminated from the story. The story is full of danger and suspense and reminded me of reading Dan Brown.

This is such an inspiring series for young readers. Emma is a forward-thinking young woman. She enjoys learning about engineering from her father and especially loves detailing her observations in her black notebook. This leads to Emma actually recording observations of illegal activities and getting her in the middle of some very dangerous situations. Again, an inspiring story, I highly recommend it.

Julia is there for the art, Nick seems to be more into the drinking aspect of their trip until they go look at paintings. Nick starts hearing a voice, Julia thinks he needs to be checked for a head injury. Or does he? This book just kept going and it was such a great read.
