I enjoy books that make me question the author’s intentions. I think the extended title, “A Dark Comedy Or Not,” kind of answers this. I read this book during a time that I was going through some intense personal struggle, and it definitely helped me escape my reality. There is a diverse cast of characters in The Cool Thing. Many of them have baggage, and that helps to make them relatable and highlights the humor in the story. Mr. Rife did a fantastic job in creating this comedy that included monsters and aliens. It is a good start to the series.

What would you do if you came across a UFO that makes you feel a little weird and gives off a funny smell? I have never read a book like The Cool Thing before! This was full of things your wildest imagination couldn’t even think of. It took me quite a bit to get into it as the first few chapters are very short and seemingly disconnected, but once I got a feel for the flow it was mind-blowing. Full of monsters, quirky sci-fi events, and even love, I was not sufficiently prepared to soak all of this in on the first read. I fully intend to read it again before I pick-up the next book in this jaw-dropping series!

If you keep an open mind when you begin reading this, it won’t take long for you to be absorbed in Robert Rife’s incredible storytelling abilities. Give it a chance and you’ll come out the other side with a marvelous yet dark picture of what is going on with all of these characters.

I have never read anything like this! This story is everything you want it to be and more. Robert Rife creates a world full of monsters, aliens, love, and surprises in this delightful dark comedy where things can only get worse.
The dark and twisted humor and the weirdly fascinating story kept me turning pages! I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to pick up the next book! Robert Rife uses vivid imagery and language to bring these wonderfully bizarre characters to life. His use of dialogue like Deena Lynn’s bubbly “Okaydee?” or any of the dark jokes really captured me and brought some fun realism to this strange and scary tale. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be horrified and laugh out loud at the same time!

The Cool Thing: A Dark Comedy. Or Not. by Robert Rife. This is my first read by this author but it for sure won’t be my last. It’s a crazy read but so fun. It starts out with a crazy couple who will do anything and I mean anything for cash. When they find an abandoned UFO they begin to sell it part by part. When they get caught they realize they are in more trouble than they bargained for. There is also a crazy Dr who has a lab full of messed up specimen. Unfortunately they don’t all disappear some never die! This crazy read will take you on a sci fi, alien fueled, monster bash. You will be turning pages late in the night trying to figure out what all these crazy people are doing. I’ve not read a book like this ever but I’m ready for the next one. Do yourself a favor and pick up this dark comedy with aliens, monsters and people that could pose as monsters!

The Cool Thing was definitely an interesting read. By far the most unique story I’ve read so far this year. After reading the 1st few chapters I was sooo confused I wasn’t sure if I was likely the book or not but I couldn’t stop reading. It’s definitely not gonna be for everybody but if you like Sci-Fi, Comedy, & Romance then this is definitely for you. I’m really happy I didn’t give on finishing the book. It turned out to be quite enjoyable and I’m even looking forward to reading book 2.

The Cool Thing: A Dark Comedy Or Not is the first book in The Cool Thing series. Let me tell you, I was intrigued by the blurb, but it does not prepare you for this book. The story is a fun, sci-fi, romance, and adventure rolled into one. The story is really creative, but what did it for me was the elements of dark comedy. The descriptions and dialogue were unexpectedly amazing. I wasn’t sure where the story would take me, but I was not disappointed.
I look forward to reading the next book in this creative series and reading more from this author soon.

A thoroughly strange and unique read. I have to admit my favorite thing about this book was the author’s descriptive language. I had never read anything from this author, but their style of writing definitely drew me in and gave life to this book. The book has an eclectic plot that is like nothing else I’ve ever read before. Bottom line: if you’re into dark humor, horror, sci-fi elements, and not too attached to characters in general – you’ll enjoy this book.

A couple gets into a UFO and tries to sell the items they take from the UFO to make a quick buck. They get caught and find themselves in big trouble. How are they going to get themselves out of this predicament? A scared female and a blundering fool… so many experiments, aliens, monsters, madness and love. Is there escape from pain and possible death?

A story told from many perspectives makes this an interesting read. You’ll want to keep reading as it keeps you laughing throughout. This is a book like I’ve never read before.

This book was AWESOME! Going back and forth between crazy, hilarious, and dark humor kept me turning the page until wee hours in the morning. I laughed out loud in several parts of this book and love the way the vivid details captured my attention. There’s spooky, whacky, and sci-fi suspense with characters that had me shaking my head at times. Even though the characters are messed up themselves, I couldn’t help but laugh at the misfortunes each one went through. This is unique writing that I can’t wait to read more of! It reminds me of Stephen King mixed with Kurt Vonnegut and Thomas Pynchon. An amazing book and I can’t wait to read more from Robert Rife!

This book was unlike anything I’ve read before. There were many entertaining aspects and laughs throughout. There are not a lot of redeeming qualities to the characters in this book and it reads as detached from the story and more about just following the authors train of thought. THE COOL THING: A DARK COMEDY. OR NOT. is the first book in THE COOL THING SERIES. It’s a satisfyingly weird book that takes the kind of yuckier, messier parts of humanity and gives them a good shake up with some truly wacky sci-fi elements.
I’m always a fan of a detailed book that really captures my imagination, and this definitely did that. Somehow, the level of grossness at times made it even more vivid and tangible for me, and I was really drawn in. Like, we see former sporting hero Carl trying to salvage a pack of cigarettes that had an unfortunate encounter with a bottle of beer. I’m pretty sure I could smell and taste them as I was reading.
I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re looking for loveable characters. But you’ll certainly find interesting characters here! Readers may find some of the content offensive or upsetting, and this is definitely not a book for younger readers.
This book gets five stars from me. I was totally engrossed, and really enjoyed it! It has me looking for the weird and magical in the everyday, which is wonderful!

The Cool Thing by Robert Rife is a bit of a madcap fantasy, with plenty of dark humour, adventure, action, danger, suspense, emotion, drama, surprising developments, imagination, all while packing loads of originality. This is the first book that I have read by Mr. Rife, and if this story is anything to go by, it certainly won’t be my last.
It reminded me a bit of Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett’s stories. A zany, comical, madcap fantasy that sweeps you up in all the action, shakes you up a bit, and doesn’t let you go until you have read every crazy, cool word.
Well worth the read!

Thank you, Robert Rife!

It is total mayhem and madness. I love black humour and that is what this book has. It is one crazy and unique story. Even though it is one book there is a story for each character that pulls the overall story together. I laughed, I cringed, I gasped, I shook my head but, in the end, I really enjoyed it.

It is a horror, sci fi, suspense story and a buffet of everything in between that will have you completely enthralled. I really enjoyed Robert’s sense of humour and look forward to reading more. This fast-paced tale is certainly different and has lots of action and adventure.

This is a really unique book. It has a mixture of everything from sci-fi to romance and even a little horror as well. The author separates the chapters so that each one is from the perspective of a different character in our story. This was nice as if felt like different stories inside one book.
I liked the humour in this book. It’s quite dark but didn’t stop me from laughing at different parts.
The characters have a very real feel to them which makes their personality and humour easy to connect with.
Most of our characters are damaged in someway and trying to regain their lives and this makes them endearing to the reader. This story is fast paced and contains lots or action and adventure which will keep the reader gripped and maybe a little confused. One thing for sure once you start you won’t stop until the end.

‘The Cool Thing’ is one of the most unique books I’ve ever read. There’s a little bit of everything in it. It’s a reading smorgasbord for your mind. The characters are quirky and unique. There’s a little comedy, a little science fiction/fantasy, a little romance, and even some horror. I found myself chuckling as I read through the story. You will feel so many things as you read. The story is broken up and told in chapters. This works great because each chapter seems to be a POV for each person. An entertaining story for those that like dark comedy with a touch of everything.

This book was packed with things! Literally! From chaos to humor, it had it all. I could not put it down, from everything happening I was very mystified and holding on for dear life! The writing was sensational, and the author made a great visual story with everything come to life!

I loved this book. UFO’s and bad people, and the good guys of course. I value this book because I laughed and bit my nails as I read. I was very invested as I read. A lot, and I mean a lot, of stuff happens. Some good things and some bad things, to certain people I will say. The book gave us a lot, and in return just wanted our interest. The book was visually, I felt I was right there in the lab. The lab certainly held many unique Characters I will say!

Robert Rife loves (and writes) dark comedy science fiction and horror; the more weird, twisted, strange, odd, irreverent, ribald, and funny scary it is… the better. Just like him. And he thrived for years in the same legalized thievery as his ethics bereft protagonist. Plus, having been married and divorced twice, he’s been told tons about NOT being human. Yes, tons. Someone is prepared to kill for a treasure PJ holds in the palm of her hand… if only she knew what it was! Oh my goodness I loved this book! I am a sucker for solving a mystery and a leading lady that makes me want to jump into the book and be her friend, a friend that makes me laugh just about every time she opens her mouth LOL

There isn’t one thing I didn’t love about this story, I loved the fast paced suspense that kept me guessing and I sincerely appreciated the “no added fluff”, every word was needed in this story and the flow was perfect. I loved the slight hint of romance throughout and the crazy friends and the family bonds throughout.

This was the perfect book, my favorite genre for sure and as much as I’d love to compare this to another series out there which I love as well, this one stands by itself and I absolutely can not wait for more and know that PJ Santini will be on my favorite character list and I hope there are many more books to come in this series.

I’m kind of star struck as I remember well watching this author on my TV years ago and her experience on CNN made this story that much more believable and fun.

I already can not wait to read this again 🙂
