The Villification of Aqua-Marine by Megan Mackie – Review by Jennifer Ramos

The Vilification of Aqua Marine (Working Mask, #1)The Vilification of Aqua Marine by Megan Mackie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Megan Mackie has done such a great job of taking an unique spin on superheroes tale for the YA audience. As to be expected, a slew of superheroes and villains with their array of powers and abilities mixed with complicated family dynamics and relationships that develop. This entertaining and fun read will have readers from the younger end of the YA audience to adults engaged and willing to see what happens next. These themes are so easily relatable to many of us.

Rhiannon, also known as Aqua-Marine, is a young female coming to terms to being comfortable with herself regardless of her family influences. Coming from a family of superheroes, Aqua-Marine is trying to set her own mark as she contemplates her family’s guidance and her own morals as she begins to understand whether she wants to be a superhero or a supervillain. This story takes us on a journey of her quest on seeking her own path in her superhero world. This is only book 1 to the series and I am ready to see what happens next!

Deadly Sommer (Nora Sommer Caribbean Suspense Book 1) by Nicholas Harvey – Review by Torey Foster

Deadly Sommer (Nora Sommer #1)Deadly Sommer by Nicholas Harvey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Deadly Sommer is a book about a young rookie officer who recently joined the force on a small island in the Caribbean. Weeks into her new job, a girl is kidnapped and the young officer finds herself alone, thrust into a game of challenges that she must complete and she has to play by the kidnappers’ rules. As she begins these challenges she realizes it wasn’t by chance that she was the one selected, the kidnapper chose her specifically, and when her losing means the death of the kidnapped girl, failure is not an option.
I really enjoyed this book. It had a good story and was an interesting read. You find out early on who the kidnapper is, so you are left to solve the “why?”. The kidnapper is not asking for money, they have a purpose for taking this girl and for the way they did it. I enjoyed following Nora through these seemingly random challenges and reading her thoughts along the way. I did have to take away one star because this book has a very slow start. I usually appreciate an author painting a picture with words to draw you into the story, but this seemed excessive. There was too much description in some places to the point where it distracts from the story. Fortunately, the story is good enough that I still think it is worth 4 stars.

The Mesmerist by Claire Luana – Reviewed by Dr. Anya Schultz

The MesmeristThe Mesmerist by Claire Luana
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow this book will keep you guessing! The Mesmerist is an adult fantasy mystery book about a girl named Adrijana, who comes to visit her friend who is one of the new guards for the princess. As a girl with much wonder about the world around her, she ends up staying for a royal party. However, this is also when her life will completely change. She finds out she is something that many fear, but at the same time someone is also killing off the royal family. Adrijana is trying to accept this new life and figure out, not only who is killing the royals, but who is trustworthy and who isn’t.

One of the things I loved most about this book was all the mystery. There are twists and turns in each chapter and I loved trying to figure out who is behind all of these weird and tragic mishaps. The clues will pull you back and forth thinking one thing one minute and then another just a sentence later. Adrijana presents strong character development and intuition as the mystery unfolds. So, if you are looking for a fantasy style book with lots of mystery, this is the book for you!!

States of Grace ( Grace Locke Mystery Series) by Mandy Miller – Review by Caralee Loonat

States of GraceStates of Grace by Mandy Miller
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have to admit this step out of my go to genre was not a disappointment. This is the first book by this author I have read. I found the author to have a unique story and very relatable characters. I like that the heroine has a past and that she also has her own demons she is battling. There was also just the right mix of drama and suspense. This book definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. I will definitely be reading more from this author in future.

Fall to Pieces by Becky Flade reviewed by Gretchen Dildine

Fall to PiecesFall to Pieces by Becky Flade

I’ll admit – this is a new author to me. I was intrigued by the synopsis of the book and decided to dive right in to it. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the book immensely. There is mystery and drama – complex characters that you can’t help but fall in love with. It is a dark story of a detective who lost her husband to suicide and who works hard to maintain her sanity…while dealing with her workload and coworkers. The story leads you into the lives of a detective and the search for a suspected child killer. The emotions of losing a child can be felt in the words so vividly written and woven thru the story line by the author. I would recommend this book if you enjoy a good mystery – I could hardly put the book down. Now to go back and read the first book in the series.
