I was pleasantly surprised by this retelling. Having read the original ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’, I was tentative in reading J Trevor Robinson retelling but I definitely do not regret it! I enjoyed reading the reimagined classic with a twist of fantasy. I was completely hooked and could not put this book down! The setting, characters and writing style transformed this novel into a quick read I want to read again.

The Mummy of Monte Cristo by J Trevor Robinson is a re-take of the ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’, so I was very curious on how the plot will be played.
A group of men put Edmund Dantes behind prison because of vengeance and ambition. Dantes is dejected and heart broken when he finds out he is imprisoned indefinitely. He finds a friend and a well-wisher who reveals the hidden terrible power in the Island of Monte Cristo.
Besotted with revenge, Edmund escapes prison to go to the island and mummifies himself alive to seek the terrible power. Then he goes on his path of vengeance to destroy the lives of all the men who imprisoned him.
The horror and fantasy elements are very interesting indeed, I never expected the Kraken with it’s prying tentacles in this book. There are vampires, zombies and a dangerous mummy. Horror is usually not to my taste, but I did find myself reading this book, possibly because I grew up reading “The Count of Monte Cristo” and the classic is very dear to me.
I do not want to compare this book with the classic, but this book can stand on its own. The characters are developed and well-rounded to fit in the story.
If there is a qualm, it’s just that it’s a bit too lengthy. Could have been shorter. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book.

The Mummy of Monte Cristo by J Trevor Robinson. I really enjoyed this read even though it isn’t my favorite genre. this is a take on the original “The Count of Monte Cristo” and it follows along only a lot darker. Its the story of Edmond Dantes who is a man that has had a truly blessed life. Until it falls apart. When the kraken attacks a ship in the Marseille harbor he springs into action to rescue the ship. Edmund ends up going to prison for treason and he ends up having to make the ultimate sacrifice to remedy the situation and everyone thinks the trouble will end with his death but it is only beginning. There are zombies, mummies, magic, monsters and adventures galore. This book is fast paced and will take your breath away at points. This was a very enjoyable retelling of the original story but will its own twists and turns to make it new.

One thing I like is discovering new authors. This is the first book from this author that I have read and I was quite impressed. I found the author had a refreshing style and also unique story. I felt as though I was right in the thick of the adventure. I really like how it had a lot of supernatural and characters. I found it to be quite a nice change from my normal genre.

I like how the main character Edmond is forced to make the ultimate sacrifice to sort the situation. I really like how the book flows. I just could not put it down. I really like how the plot twists and turns and how all is righted in the end. I will definitely read more from this author in the future.

AAA+++++++ I can’t even put into words how much I enjoyed this retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo.
J. Trevor Robinson definitely did his research with French history and the way he seamlessly wove the supernatural aspects into this classic storyline was masterful.
The story was close enough to the original that I could tell where the storyline came from but Robinson didn’t steel the story he expertly put his own supernatural twist into it.
AMAZING world building and the characters took the story to new heights.
Thank you for doing the beloved classic justice.

I loved the tale this is based off of and was excited to see how Robinson would stay true to the material while putting a paranormal spin on the context. Anyone that has spent any time in the pages originally spun by Dumas will find Robinson staying true to major character details and plot movement. The pacing felt similar and there was a certain epic scale to this tale that is often not part of modern fiction. I was intrigued to read these pages to find how the paranormal spin would root and resolve. I embraced this new spin on a classic and thoroughly enjoyed it. The original is a classic and cannot be truly matched. However by changing the environment and a few key plot points, Robinson does a beautiful job refreshing it and staying true to its basic principles. Loved it.

I know what your thinking and truly I thought the same thing. As a fan of The Count of Monte Cristo I thought this could be nothing but sacrilege. Oh, how very wrong I was. The Mummy of Monte Cristo by J Trevor Robinson, was a really great book. As intricate and elaborately plotted as the original but who can pass up an alternate reality complete with its own fantastic monsters and gifted folks. Of course, the characters remain wonderful but oh what a wonderful new world. And zombies! Dear reader, don’t pass this one up. This is golden.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fantasy thriller which is a retelling of the classic Alexandre Dumas adventure ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ but set in a world of monsters and magic. Like in the original novel the story centres around Edmond Dantes who is about to marry Mercedes his sweetheart and who has just been made captain of a ship. Just as things are going well for Edmond the jealousy and ambition of others result in Edmond being framed for treason and sent to prison indefinitely. Whilst in prison he finds a friend who talks about a terrible power which is hidden on the island of Monte Cristo. Edmond manages to escape and gives up his humanity so that he can get revenge on the group of men who framed him, making the decision to be mummified alive. Edmond then pursues his enemies to Paris where he devises a plan to ruin the men’s new lives completely but he keeps experiencing unexpected reminders of the humanity he left behind. He then learns that one of the men has an even grander plan that could result in worldwide death all for his own profit.

This is a wonderfully written novel and it really is a, “thrilling tale of magic, monsters, envy, wrongful imprisonment, and revenge”. I was hooked from page one and although it is a lengthy book I found I could not put it down. The story follows the original but with the added fantasy elements making the storyline intriguing and the narrative flows well moving the story along at a fairly fast pace. I like the short chapters and I think that works well and the authors descriptive writing style really brings the characters and the setting alive making me feel fully immersed in the story. The plot is action packed and full of drama and I was gripped until the end of this unique and original novel. This was an epic read but also an enjoyable and engaging one and I would recommend ‘The Mummy of Monte Cristo’ to all readers regardless of whether they have read the original.

For anyone who loves classic stories, this one is enjoyable. As the first book by this author, I found it to be entertaining. J Trevor Robinson is a new author to me. I found his writing style to be enjoyable. It is hard to take an old tale and make it new again. The genre of this book is fantasy and thriller. I found myself going on a thrilling ride. The characters are fully developed and complex. The storyline keeps you going to see what is coming around the corner now. This book is about Edmond. He has everything going for himself. He has a fiance and a promotion but in one second everything is gone. He is being charged with treason and now he is being threatened to have his humanity taken away. I highly recommend reading this story to follow Edmund’s story for yourself.

I wasn’t exactly sure what I had gotten myself into when I picked up The Mummy of Monte Cristo by J Trevor Robinson. I have never read his work prior to this and the premise was definitely strong and pulled me right in. I personally adore ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’, so I was highly intrigued to see what he would do with this classic fav of mine. I must say I had high expectations going into it that it would be something I would ultimately enjoy. This book plays out fairly slow. I will start with that because it stuck in the back of my mind as I read most of the book. I was constantly waiting for that extra bit of magic I wanted for lack of better description. It just felt like it took forever to get to the good stuff lol. This however didn’t ruin my overall enjoyment of the book and its premise. I won’t divulge much more than you get in the synopsis because that would ruin the twist he has given Monte Cristo. I can tell you there is something for everyone in this between the nod to classical literature, mummies, magic, monsters and zombies, and even some adventurous points. I think all the aspects are what kept me enthralled as I felt it drug on. I am eager to see what else we have or will get from Robinson!

This was a great book that had me gripped right from the beginning. It contains magic, deceit, and revenge all added together to make a story you won’t be able to put down.

Edmond  seems to have his life on track and heading in the right direction. He is due to marry the love of his life and he has been promoted to Captain of the ship, a great achievement for a guy so young.

However his life is turned upside down by jealousy of others and when Edmond is arrested for treason against the king his life seems over as he is sent to prison.

But when Edmond escapes he sets on to get his revenge on the people who lied about him and caused him to lose the life he had worked hard to create.

The Mummy of Monte Cristo by J Trevor Robinson is a dark thriller and a unique modern retelling of the well-known story of Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo. J. Trevor Robinson has given us a story with a twist which includes mythical and supernatural creatures, vampires and zombies and all sorts of other things. The narrative is long and heavy and definitely not an afternoon read. It will require time and dedication. The characters are well developed and there are a lot. It is action-packed and full of twist with the horror aspects J Trevor Robinson has plotted.

The Mummy of Monte Cristo is my first read by J. Trevor Robinson. As I hadn’t read any of his work before, I really didn’t know what to expect going into this book. But as it is a dark(ish) take on the classic ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’, which is a favourite of mine, I was quite intrigued to discover what lay under the cover.
This has quite a clever premise behind this adaptation- a tribute to the original, but with its own unique identity; as well as some wonderful historical details, magic, monsters, danger, hidden agendas, the supernatural, action, adventure, drama, suspense, a little mystery, and horror themes.
The characters were interesting and well developed- with their own identities, quirks and flaws. They definitely made the story more intriguing. This is quite a long story, and there were times I felt the story lagged/dragged a little- but this didn’t really detract any from my overall enjoyment of the book.
I won’t go into any detail, as I don’t want to spoil the twist on the original- that is something you will want to discover for yourself.
I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more from J. Trevor Robinson is the future.

Thank you, J. Trevor Robinson!

By J Trevor Robinson
5 out of 5 stars

I loved reading the book The Mummy of Monte Cristo by J Trevor Robinson. It is a story that includes betrayal, vengeance, secrets, and danger. I loved the character of Edmond Dantes. He is a man that should have had a wonderful life. Things look bright for him until he loses everything. What does the future hold for Edmond? Read this book to find out. This is an amazing story that had me turning pages to find out what happens next. It had my emotions going up and down all the way through. Edmond is a character that you can empathize with for what happens to him as well as understand the reasons for the path that he embarks on. There are many characters in this story. Some of them have selfish goals and only look out for themselves. They crave power and influence while trampling over those who they consider beneath them. Others are driven to make sure things are set right. The book is brilliantly written, and the author makes the story and the characters come alive. Don’t miss out on an exciting and entertaining story that you will not want to put down until you had finished the final page. I highly recommend reading it.

Now he is faced with making things right but will he have to give up his humanity? This is a longer story but Edmond keeps you wanting to see what will happen next.
