The-Know-It-All-Pencil (Invisible Magic Wand Series) by Lois Wickstrom – Review By Jennie M Bechtel

The Know-It-All Pencil (Invisible Magic Wand)The Know-It-All Pencil by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“The Know-It-All Pencil” is a story about a boy whose grandfather gives him a unique, magical gift. It is part of the Invisible Magic Wand series. I enjoyed this story. I read it without having read the other stories in the series and feel like I would have understood it more if I had read at least the first book in the series. I like the idea of a magic pencil. I was intrigued by the adventure Caspian experienced as a result of receiving the pencil. I recommend this book for children and anyone who enjoys a good children’s story.

Exiled South by Harriet Cannon – Review by Jennie Bechtel

Exiled SouthExiled South by Harriet Cannon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book follows the journey of Lizbeth Gordon from the Pacific Northwest, to Charleston, SC, and to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fleeing sadness and anger in her life in the Pacific Northwest, Lizbeth throws herself into learning about her family’s roots in Charleston, SC. In a surprising twist, Lizbeth learns more about her South Carolina family once she moves to Rio de Janeiro. This book started off slowly, to me, but became more exciting once Lizbeth discovers the stories from her ancestor, Laurette. I love the character development and the author’s attention to detail. I recommend this book for anyone interested in Civil War history.

Shadows of Doubt by Merissa Racine – Review by Jennie Betchel

Shadows of Doubt (A Crawford Mystery)Shadows of Doubt by Merissa Racine
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is a sequel, but can be read without reading the first book. This book is a suspenseful mystery that kept my attention and made me want to keep reading. The author describes characters and settings with enough detail I could picture the scenes in my mind. I especially loved the attention given to food; I felt as though I were dining and experiencing the meals with the characters. As far as the mystery, I was happy the author kept me guessing who the killer was. Pick this one up if you are looking for a great mystery with a shocking ending.

Stranded (Cetacea Chronicles Book 1) by Feather Chelle – Review by Jennie Bechtel

Stranded: Cetacea Chronicles Volume 1Stranded: Cetacea Chronicles Volume 1 by Feather Chelle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In Stranded, Feather Chelle takes readers on an adventure with a whale family. Fear of a serious illness scares the whales away from other whale families, and into harm’s way. The family calls upon the Dolphin Riders, a group of enchanted children and dolphins, to rescue them. Chelle does an excellent job describing detail in this story. She defines vocabulary for readers who may not be familiar with marine science. The whales, dolphins, dolphin riders, and their habitats are described in great detail, allowing the readers to envision the characters and their surroundings. Even though this story is written for children, I enjoyed it as an adult. I was disappointed with the ending, however. It seemed rushed and abrupt, and left me wanting more stories of this whale family.

SPOOKED BY A SUSPICION by Risa Nyman – Review by Jennie Bechtel

Spooked by a SuspicionSpooked by a Suspicion by Risa Nyman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Rocky takes us on another investigative adventure in Spooked by a Suspicion, by Risa Nyman. In this sequel to Swallowed by a Secret, Rocky, a teen transitioning from middle school to high school, enlists the help of his friend, Olive, to prove his mother’s new fiancé, Ted, is ruining Rocky’s life. After his mother announces plans to marry Ted, Rocky suffers a series of unfortunate events. Those events, combined with Ted’s creepy appearance, convince Rocky that Ted is trying to sabotage him. While building the case against Ted, Rocky learns sometimes people aren’t who they appear to be. I was held captive by this story as Rocky built his case against Ted. Nyman’s writing made me want to keep reading to discover what Ted had in store next for Rocky. Although this book is a sequel, it can be read and enjoyed without needing to read book number one. Even though it is written for middle school students, I found this book enjoyable as an adult.
