This story was an excellent read! It was a great horror book! I’m usually super picky about my horror and thriller books since I grew up reading Stephen King. Josh comes back to his hometown after a few things happened at college, but things aren’t exactly as it seems. The suspense was the undertone throughout the entire book. I was on pins and needles the entire time. The story was very detailed and the story building was excellent!

Midnight Falls by John Evans is a dark and moody werewolf thriller that reminds me of all the ‘classic’ horror movies I devoured growing up in the 80’s. I can see this making a great John Carpenter-esque horror movie, or something along the lines of The Howling etc. Mr. Evans writing style is detailed and descriptive, which set the scene and mood of the story to a gripping and chilling level- the whole way through. I loved how the story twisted and turned- never quite letting me get too comfortable. The story is imbued with plenty of dark, broody, moody tones- with mystery, suspense, secrets, and intrigue aplenty. This book brought back a lot of nostalgic memories of my teenage self, devouring every horror novel I could get my hands on- not to mention the countless hours spent watching double feature horror movies at the local cinema with my friends… good times. I will definitely be keeping my eye out for more from Mr. Evans in the future. Happy Reading…

Fascinating book. I absolutely loved how the suspense built right from the start. I had the chills as he was describing the worlves. It sounds weird to say but it is one of the better horror novels that I’ve read this year. Intriguing characters. The whole premise of the story really grabs you from the beginning and hooks you in. He’s a new author to me and I’ll be there to buy new works from him. It’s an entertaining read.

Midnight Falls is a thriller that involves a writer who has looked into the eyes of an evil monster intent on killing him and anyone who stood in its way. Josh had chosen to move to Midnight Falls, where he obtained a job as a freelance writer for the local paper. Bringing along his faithful dog, Nimrod, he settles into a house with his neighbors, Brad Jefferson and Joey Ackerman, being unofficial outsiders to Midnight Falls. Brad was the only black man in the town, and Joey was homosexual. One afternoon, Josh and Brad had been working on the roof when Elizabeth “Lizzie” Caldwell came to Josh’s house to offer some iced tea. Life was ideal for Josh… for a while.
Jarrod Earlywine was the son of the sheriff and spoiled. Josh was shining his Dodge Charger when he first met Jarrod. The impudent teen wanted to buy the car, but Josh refused to sell it. In an attempt to intimidate Josh, Jarrod started to invade his personal space. Normally a big goofball, Nimrod came to his aid by growling at the boy. Later that day, Sheriff Earlywine gave Josh a sinister warning to watch out or he would come after him. A week later, Josh and Lizzie go to the community potluck. When Lizzie dragged Josh out on the dance floor, she caught the attention of Jarrod and his two friends. Josh hears Jarrod and his buddies call Lizzie a slut. Josh attempts to show Jarrod he isn’t afraid of him. Despite his nose being broken, Jarrod suffers humiliation by an accidental depantsing.
Josh and Lizzie were attempting to finish the night with romance, but Nimrod was upset. Locking him out of the bedroom failed to dissuade the dog. Nimrod broke through the door. Before Josh could address the dog’s intrusion, Lizzie points at the window. For a fraction of a moment, he saw something with burning red eyes. A gunshot, and Josh finds his neighbors staring at a creature that none of them can identify. The next morning, the creature had decomposed beyond recognition. The neighbors and Lizzie are about to face a legend that has been hidden in Midnight Falls that nobody will ever believe.
John Evans masters the suspense in this novel. The vivid details of the monsters that emerge in the story are terrifying, and Josh’s inclination to run was understandable. The opening to the book foreshadowed his desperate attempt to escape the creatures that haunted him, which immediately caused tension to build from the first page. The multiple opportunities that Josh had to escape the chaos that he would eventually face showed his compassion for Lizzie, especially when her grandmother was upset. Ironically, Nimrod has a major role in the story, but I won’t reveal any secrets. This book would be best suited to readers who are mature and enjoy horror stories.

I almost put this book down before finishing it. It started off very rough, very slow, and I wasn’t quite sure where it was going. There was enough there to keep me intrigued so I made it through. There are twists and turns you won’t see coming and the story ended up coming together well in the end.

Interesting story. It’s a horror/thriller type of story. There are monsters very similar to werewolves. It’s descriptive especially when it comes to the location, characters, and death scenes. My favorite character was the main characters dog, Nimrod.

This is a new author for me. I enjoyed his creative writing style as well as his attention to details that made this story realistic. I enjoyed how I was pulled into the story from the start by the characters. Josh is a great character and adds so much to the story. What happens Josh thought going home would be good but there is something missing for him. He now has a choice to make, face his problems or keep running. There is something lurking in the dark that may just make the choice for him. This is a story that you don’t want to miss. This is a fast paced story with twists and turns that you won’t see coming. This is an engaging, hard to put down story that had me turning pages to the end. I really enjoyed reading this story. I highly recommend this book.

This book is a great horror story, that builds the more the more the book goes on. When I first started reading this book I was a little unsure if I would like it. It was a bit confusing to read and I didn’t know what the author would do with it. However, I am pleased I stuck with it because it developed so well as the book went on and by the end I was completely engrossed in what I was reading. This is the first book that I have read by this author and it was an interesting story. He clearly took his time to build up the characters and integrate them with the ongoing storyline. I became invested in the world he was building and enjoyed the story. I will definitely read more from this author in the future.
