Goldilocks and the Six Simple Machines (Science Folktales) by Lois Wickstrom – Review by Tara Johnson Barnes

Goldilocks and the Six Simple MachinesGoldilocks and the Six Simple Machines by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Goldilocks and the Six Simple Machines is an imaginative retelling of the classic fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Goldilocks is riding her bike through the woods one day when she comes across the home of the three bears who are out for a walk. In this version we learn about simple machines as Goldilocks goes inside and fixes things around the home of the bears. She fixes the porridge, a wobbly table leg, and baby bear’s broken chair. When the bears come home, they find Goldilocks sleeping in one of their beds and use a simple machine to lift her out of the bed. Goldilocks also helps baby bear raise a flag using a simple machine. This was such a cute, imaginative, and entertaining retelling of the classic fairytale. Kids will learn about six simple machines as well as kindness, respect, being helpful, learning how to problem solve, and leaving things better than you found them. This book was engaging and fun, but I was disappointed in the quality of the illustrations and found them to be a bit childish. (No offense to the illustrator, just my personal opinion.) I hope that in future editions of this book the illustrations will be more like in the author’s other books as this will really make the story pop off the pages. Overall, a great book!

How to Catch Little Boys and Eat Them by Lois Wickstrom – Review by Tara Johnson Barnes

How to Catch Little Boys and Eat ThemHow to Catch Little Boys and Eat Them by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

How to Catch Little Boys and Eat Them is a cute children’s book that is based loosely off the Jack and the Beanstalk fairytale. The story is told from the POV of the Giant who tells us how he intends to capture little boys so that he can eat them. The Giant seems to have it all figured out and even has it planned out step-by-step. He makes it easy for the boys to steal from him so that they continue to come back and is careful not to scare them because this will ruin their flavor. When Jack meets the Giant, he offers to do an infomercial for the Giant so that he will have more little boys climbing up the Beanstalk to the Giant’s home. What the Giant does not realize is that Jack might have more to his plan than he is letting on. I loved this retelling and found it cute, funny, and whimsical. I loved that Jack ends up tricking the Giant and that the Giant never saw it coming. The illustrations were bright, colorful, and really brought the story to life.

Enemies of Doves by Shanessa Gluhm – Review by Devon Pulliam

Enemies of DovesEnemies of Doves by Shanessa Gluhm
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is one mystery book that sucked me in and did not disappoint in the story line. Clancy and Joel experiencing something traumatic as kids that followed them into adult hood. Then mixing in the war and some bad PTSD on top of their love for Lorraine.

Garrison wanting to find his family and Molly wanting to solve a crime uncovered the truth that had been hidden all these years. Also led Garrison into finding his family and Molly uncovering a hidden truth about her own.

This book was so hard to put down and not finish in one sitting. The way the story goes from past to present and linking it all up in the final few chapters.

This has to be one of the best mystery books I personally have read in awhile. One that added a few twists and then bam shocker!

Levi (The Brothers of Creekside Ranch Book 1) by Edith Mackenzie Review by Tara Johnson Barnes

LeviLevi by Edith Mackenzie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Levi is Book 1 in The Brothers of Creekside Ranch series. In it we are introduced to the Delaney Brothers who have been left to look after Creekside Ranch after losing their dad and stepmom. On top of running the ranch, they have been faced with the difficult task of how to care for their now orphaned nine-year-old sister, Allie. Running the ranch is a full-time job so the brothers are unsure how to properly care for their little sister. Ex-Navy SEAL Levi is finding the task especially daunting and feels that he is far too busy with the ranch to have to worry about how he is going to try to raise his kid sister. An opportunity presents itself when an old friend asks Levi for a favor and needs somewhere for a person in the Witness Protection Plan to hide out. Levi decides to bring her to the ranch as their new Housekeeper and Nanny to their little sister.

Bella has found herself in the Witness Protection Program after helping to get her abusive ex-boyfriend, Dimitri, arrested. Now she must find a safe place to hide out until the trial against Dimitri and the Russian mafia. Bella never anticipated to be asked to be a nanny for a kid or a housekeeper for three grown men. Having never been a nanny before Bella is unsure what to expect or how to act the part. She is more unsure about what to do about the attraction she feels to the rugged, good-looking cowboy Levi.

Bella and Levi instantly clash and butt heads with one another. Bella, an English aristocrat, comes across to Levi as snobby. His brothers, on the other hand, find Bella charming and fawn over her every chance they get. Levi comes across to Bella as bossy and rude. Although Bella is still struggling with how Dimitri hurt her, she has a problem with him thinking that she must follow his every order. Levi is fighting his own demons. Although the two butt heads, they also feel inexplicably drawn to one another. Bella feels compelled to help Levi and Levi finds himself jealous when his brothers shower Bella with attention. Will Bella and Levi act on their underlying feelings?

I loved the wholesome story of Bella and Levi and enjoyed reading to see if either would let their guard down long enough to let the other in. Bella may have seemed snobbish at first but there was more to her than that a prim and proper appearance and good manners. Deep down she was full of grit, determination, and hidden strengths. Levi came across as harsh and cruel initially, but he was fighting with the trauma of his past. This book was full of action, suspense, mystery, love, and good old fashioned family values. A great read!
