Kris & The Pirates: The Adventures of KrisKris & The Pirates: The Adventures of Kris by Art Blegen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wonderful book! I was so entranced in the story that I thought Kris was really a part of the ship’s crew. Kris meets Stevie the Sloth, Tammy the Turtle, Sammy the Snake and Michael the Monkey along her way through the jungle, trying to hide from the pirates while also figuring out a way to save her crew. It was fun to watch her problem solve and plan for the rescue and she was pretty cleaver in getting them free. I enjoyed reading the descriptions of the pirates she came in contact with as well as her never give up attitude. I look forward to more adventures with Kris.

Detective Dylan and the Hunt for Home Plate (A Youth Sleuths Chapter Book Series, #2)Detective Dylan and the Hunt for Home Plate by M.J. Murray
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book sees the return of Detective Dylan, his sister Emily and dog Theodore and this time, they are off to the local park to practice playing ball, it is a Saturday and a lot of the local kids go there to practice, however, when they get there, the coach can’t find the home plate and without this and the other plates, they can’t practice.

Fortunately, Dylan has brought his detective kit from the Youth Sleuths and so Dylan, Emily and Theodore head out into the park to investigate where the plate has gone and who had taken it, but as with all investigations, the answer is not as straightforward as it seems.

Will the trio be able to fund the plates and save the day, or will practice just have to be postponed until they are returned another day? This is a wonderful way to show the importance of communities, collaboration, fun and of course, investigating where you will follow along on the hunt and discover lots of other things along the way.

Kris & The Pirates: The Adventures of KrisKris & The Pirates: The Adventures of Kris by Art Blegen

Kris and the Pirates is book two in The Adventures of Kris series. It is a children’s chapter book geared towards children between the ages of ten to fourteen years of age. The book follows the adventures of a young girl named Kris as she becomes immersed into the stories she reads and shares the adventures alongside the characters in the book. Kris is not eager to attend a costume party with her family because she feels that dressing up in costumes is only acceptable at Halloween, not in March. To take her mind off the party she is reluctant to attend she decides to escape into the world of her book. The story takes her on an exciting adventure where she gets to sail the seas, go swimming, meet pirates, go on an island, and make friends with talking animals. Kris learns about friendship, overcoming fear, sailing, being brave, and how to overcome challenges. A fun and entertaining read.

Loris Opens Up His Heart (Courage Tales Series Book #1) by Dagmara Sitek – Review by Dagmara Sitek

Loris Opens Up His HeartLoris Opens Up His Heart by Dagmara Sitek
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

4.5 Stars

Loris Open Up His Heart is the first book in the Courage Tales series by Dagmara Sitek who has lovingly crafted a wonderfully meaningful children’s story (with lovely colourful illustrations that help to bring the story to life by Lau Frank).
The story is aimed at children aged 5 to 10 years-old — but I feel there is value to the story that will ensure that the book can be enjoyed and appreciated by all ages.
This is not only a cute tale but teaches valuable life lessons along the way. Loris hasn’t had an easy life and as a result has ‘closed-off his heart’. When he is placed with a loving, supportive family, he learns to ‘open up his heart’ again. Along the way he, along with his foster family, teach us about emotional intelligence and how to deal with strong emotions such as anger, frustration, loneliness, and hurt. It also shows how opening yourself up to ‘new’ and scary experiences can have wonderful results. The story touches on topics such as bullying, making friends, the meaning of family (and that family doesn’t always mean you have to be ‘blood’ related), having compassion/empathy, being kind/generous, being helpful, being brave/resilient/patient/tenacious, and finding purpose in life. I really felt for Loris and what he had been through. I was so happy that he found a family that made him feel like he was safe enough to open up his heart again. I really wanted to give him the biggest, squishiest hugs.
This was such a lovely, heartwarming story that left me with all the ‘feel-good’ vibes of a meaningful story.
Looking forward to reading the rest of the series…

Thank you, Dagmara Sitek!

This is the first time we have picked up a book by this author. The Author has developed a great mystery book for future super sleuths. It’s a quick chapter book for your not so little ones, about 80 pages. It took us a couple days but only because we read it before bedtime every night. My nephew loves that it wasn’t just a plain Chapter book. But one with illustrations in it to help with visuals and to help keep his attention.I’m definitely going to go get the first one to read. So we can see more adventures from Dylan, Emily and Theodore. Also I can’t wait for book number 3 to be released🥰 What I loved was that there was additional Resources provided at the end of the book for extra learning. I highly recommend reading this!

Queen of the Fairies is a fun, magical book for young readers. It would be a good beginner reader for those just learning to read. The illustrations are colorful and bright and assist the story. My son and I read a lot of this author’s books, and we are big fans. After the twist at the end, we had to go back and re-read it with a new mindset. My son thought of ways the “bad” fairies might behave, and what the queen might do next. It kept him engaged and talking after, which I love.

I love picking up books by this author and sharing them with my kiddos. Even though I’m a tad older than the target audience, I still very much enjoyed going on this adventure! Aiming at the 8–12-year-old audience, I feel that it’s a perfect match because my youngest is 8 and my oldest is 12, and they fell in love with it as soon as we started reading together! The chapters may feel a bit long in the beginning to the younger age range, but all is well once they find their groove. It is fast-paced and takes you on quite the journey through the woods with Beth, Timmy, and Arthur. Cody the dog is there to offer a secret superpower and assist in solving the mystery. I highly recommend this book for any young one in your life, and I bet you’ll enjoy the ride right along with them!

It is not what I expected in a good way. It does get the reader to get a better understanding of how a young child feels when in a difficult situation. It also gives one a sense of how people can be helpful in dealing with emotions and let them know that they are not alone. The book is very colorful and gets the reader into what’s going on in the story.

Code Dog is a children’s chapter book geared towards children between the ages of eight to twelve years of age. It follows the adventures of Timmy, Beth and Arthur as they follow the trail of clues in the hopes of finding a missing 200-year-old time capsule. The three friends get a bit of help from their old teacher, Mrs. Vance who gives them an old map, and her dog, Cody, who has special skills. Cody can tell your fortune, track, and can even speak in morse code through her tail. Timmy, Arthur, and Beth must follow the clues on the map which is a bit tricky because there is no X to mark the spot of where the capsule is located. They only have a limited amount of time to find the capsule if they want to win $1,000. This was an entertaining read with great characters, friendship, a super smart dog, fun, adventure, mystery, clues, codes, and investigation.

The King of Mir tasks his citizens with coming up with a solution that is fair and the winner will be the King’s Royal Advisor BUT if the solution doesn’t work, then the King will take their most prized possession. Several others try and fail before Wynnie gives her solution. I love how Wickstrom is always weaving in life lessons for her readers. I also really like the illustrations in this book. I just loved this book!! You don’t read a lot about foster care and over coming many issues that can come with being put through the system. Especially a children’s book! This book had wonderful illustrations, but also a wonderful storyline. It really puts you in the shoes of a little boy who has been through a lot and must overcome a lot at the same time. In this book, Cam and Inaya are training for a charity run. The charity run is to raise money for a friend of theirs’s who is in the hospital needing open heart surgery. As you go along you see these two practice running, handing out fliers, and getting ready for the big run. One day after a run the two go home and meet their new foster brother. Loris keeps to himself. He doesn’t say much, he doesn’t play with the others, and he keeps to himself quite a bit. Cam and Inaya try over and over to get him to join them in stuff but he always says no. One day at school Loris stands up to a bully in their school. All the kids are scared of him, but Loris has been scared of worse. The foster siblings start to bond over things and Loris lets his guard down some. Race day comes and Cam hurts himself during the run. Loris takes over for him and helps with the rest of the race. The event is a huge success and the children bond even more. Such a wonderful book. Teaching great values while learning about courage, kindness, and overcoming many fears that pop up in different ways. I would defiantly recommend this book for children 10 and under, but it’s also a good book to show teens to encourage understanding and help stop bullying in my opinion. I can’t wait to read it with my girls.

Stop That Lion: A Tale of Friendship Love and Peace (Kingdom of Mir)Stop That Lion: A Tale of Friendship Love and Peace by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Stop That Lion” by Lois Wickstrom is a charming and engaging story about solving problems through creativity and collaboration. The premise of the story, with the Kingdom of Sher’s lion causing mischief in the neighboring Kingdom of Mir, is both humorous and relatable.

The characters in the story, particularly Winnie, are endearing and relatable. Winnie’s determination to save her pet sheep, Paley, and her kingdom is admirable, and readers will root for her as she navigates the contest to Stop the Lion. The King’s willingness to listen to Winnie’s idea and give her a chance to solve the problem showcases the importance of listening to diverse perspectives and working together to find solutions.

The message of the story, that fair solutions and teamwork are key to overcoming challenges, is conveyed effectively through the entertaining plot and well-developed characters. The illustrations by Carol Thompson complement the story beautifully, adding depth and visual appeal to the narrative.
