I don’t typically pick up books in this genre, but something about this one pulled me in. I’m so glad I listened to that little voice because even though this is the only second book I’ve read by this author, something tells me it is far from the last. I enjoyed Mark Sutherland’s cross-country adventure and how the author so vividly portrays the locations he ventures into. I felt pulled into the story to the point where it felt more like an experience which I absolutely loved. Mark is a relatable character that you feel like rooting for the whole way through his journey and the flow of the story itself is quite smooth. Get ready for a fast-paced historical adventure where you’ll read about a bit of danger, a few friends, and the ever-famous gold rush! I highly recommend picking this up and getting wrapped up in the twists and turns that is Mr. Sutherland’s life.

After a childhood filled with upheaval. he has always had the itch to keep moving and chasing the next adventure, but he has one which has lasted the longest, however the newspaper he is working for has other ideas and so he goes where the news takes him.

Just when he is starting to feel antsy, the editor asks him to travel to a small town in middle America to investigate a story which could be extraordinary if proven, however, when he gets there, it isn’t quite the story he imagined, but it wasn’t a wasted trip as he meets someone who leads him to his next adventure. As soon as he sends his articles to his editor, he sets off to an exciting venture where he learns something new about the world and how it is changing to meet the new demands as a new century is on the horizon.

At long last, he receives the news that his biggest dream has finally been accepted and he gets to follow his heart to the arctic frontier to follow the gold rush, but the caveat is that he has to make his travels into a series. This is more than exciting news and Mark goes home so that he can prepare and spend some time with his family before his dream comes true.

He finalises his plans and sets off northwards and the start of his journey, he writes about every step of the way, as well as meeting new people and gauging their reasons for taking the same journey and some even become friends as the harsh reality of life in this unforgiving environment hits, but will he survive the elements and bring back the articles and gold home with him, or will he succumb to the wilds? This is a fast-paced historical adventure which takes you through America and into the Canadian wilderness as you follow the gold rush fever and see it through the eyes of those following it.

Mark Sutherland loves adventure! In order to support his ideal lifestyle, he became a reporter. His dream is to go to the Yukon and experience the Canadian Gold Rush. However, he has to pay and exorbitant amount of money to get there. Not to mention, a year’s worth of supplies (including a stove) to be able to survive there, because once you get there, you are iced in until spring. So to save his money to get there, he takes other trips out to Texas and Oklahoma. He has other adventures and ends up befriending Gus, who becomes a good, reliable friend. When he returns from those, he finds out that his trip has been approved, but it comes with a few strings. Can Mark agree to the terms to gain the trip of a lifetime? Or will it become too much to ask of him?

I really love reading this author! Their stories always make me feel like I am right there in history watching the adventures play out in my mind. The characters are written in such a relatable/likeable way that it is easy to want to be their friend! I also enjoyed the mention and interaction with Emma from the author’s Notebook Mysteries series (if you haven’t read that series, you should!). I love that their story is still continuing on with the next generation. It was an enjoyable read and am looking forward to the next in the series!

Mark Sutherland is a reporter for the Chicago Tribune that reports on a little if everything. We met him in the Notebook Mysteries so we know he’s always up for an adventure. The Yukon Gold Rush is happening and Mark is making his way there. As with her other works the author has put together a fun adventure that makes you want to see what happens next. This was a quick and easy read that ties in with her Notebook Mysteries nicely. I hope we get more stories of Mark in the future.

1897: A Mark Sutherland Adventure is a historical adventure with mystery, intrigue, action, suspense, and drama. The story is set in the year 1897 and centers around the character of a young reporter named Mark Sutherland who works for the Chicago Tribune. 1897 A Mark Sutherland Adventure (Mark Sutherland Adventures) by Kimberly Mullins. This is such a good historical fiction read. Its the story of reporter Mark Sutherland and his desires to travel to the Yukon to cover the new gold rush. He’s in Chicago right now and he’s not sure how he will get there though. This read covers all kinds of things in the 1800’s including the oil boom in Oklahoma and a weird thing landing in Texas. We learn all about how hard life is in this time period and how so many people die. Without the comforts of what we know now life is very hard. Thinking this Gold rush will be similar to the one in California he thinks it will be somewhat easy to cover. Along the way to the Yukon he meets several people including one lady he has interest in. Romance, mystery and history are all in this book. I love this author’s writing I actually felt like I was in these places and time period while I was reading. Great Historical mystery!

A very enjoyable historical adventure book, set in 1897, the story is about a reporter from Chicago Tribune, Mark Sutherland, who lives on the edge. He loves travelling and reporting on the odd and eccentric. Marks wants to go to Yukon and witness the gold rush, thinking it would be on similar lines as the 1849 California gold rush. As he embarks on this adventure, he meets more friends along the way, each one with their own reason to travel to Yukon. There is romance, adventure, a lot of historic information and the adrenaline pumping to see what happens when we witness the gold rush. Overall a very enjoyable read.

I have loved everything I have read from this author! This book did not disappoint in its historical avenue. If you have read the Notebook Mysteries Series then you will recognize that Mark is someone Emma and the team has helped. That’s actually what drew me to this story. The fact those characters are branching out into their own adventures!

Mark is a reporter for the local paper and is always up to travel and keep writing. The Alien Crash in 1897 is the first stop on his adventure. Ultimately Mark finds himself traveling to the Yukon for the Gold! The accuracy of these stories is so great and the way its written makes you feel like you’re part of the story.

Mark of course has his challenges once there but not without surrounding himself with family/friends that will take care of him when he needs it. This story has some sad character stories within it but the happiness that comes out and wins is so great.

This is another great historical mystery from Kimberly Mullins. I have loved all the Notebook mystery series and was so excited to see another book from this author. The attention to detail that is placed in this story really brings the time period to life and transports the reader to that time and place making it a really engaging and immersive read. The author also does an amazing job with the characters making them all unique and believable you can actually imagine them living the lives she portrays in the stories.

In this story we are with Mark Sutherland. He is a journalist for a newspaper but he loves adventures and hates being stuck in one place. When he gets a job reporting on a supposed flying machine crash it is only the start of his adventures as he makes his way to Yukon on his quest for a story on the gold rush.
But this is a story that isn’t straight forward. It is full of twists and turns as Mark meets new people, some of them friends, some of them enemy’s and as he continues to investigate the story’s he finds it also leads him to discover things people would rather be kept secret.

This story is a historical mystery that is full of twists and turns you never know what to expect or what Mark will stumble across next. There is danger and excitement around every corner as well as friendships along the way.
This author creates an amazing multi layer story which will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. I was gripped from beginning to end.

An enjoyable and entertaining historical adventure set in 1897, just on the cusp of the 20th Century. We are introduced to a intrepid reporter for the Chicago Tribune, Mark Sutherland, who lives an adventurous life travelling and reporting on the odd and inexplicable and anything new and novel. Mark wants to go to Yukon and witness the gold rush, having read all about the 1849 California gold rush. However, he’s not the only one with gold rush fever, and as he travels to Yukon he meets new friends along the way, all of whom have their own reasons for undertaking the journey. As he makes his way north, Mark encounters many adventures and there is even some romance. This was a real page turner which kept me hooked throughout. The descriptive narrative brought both the characters and the setting to life, making me feel immersed in the story. The added historical details also transported me back in time, and I felt that I was travelling alongside Mark and experiences the gold rush firsthand. I look forward to going on another adventure with Mark Sutherland soon!

I am a huge fan of this author and have read every single installment of her Notebook Mysteries series. I had very high expectations for this book before picking it up, and I am excited to report that it DID. NOT. DISAPPOINT. Mark Sutherland’s adventures as a reporter in the late 1800s are captivating and intriguing, and the author’s talent for capturing and describing the given time period is evident. This is an excellent read for history buffs, as well as mystery chasers, and will absorb you from start to finish. What added an even deeper appreciation for me was the connection to the main character in the Notebook Mysteries series, Emma. This book can be read by itself, though, so if you have not yet indulged in that series, no worries…although, I highly recommend doing so. As with everything this author writes, if I could give it more than five stars, I totally would.

1897 by Kimberly Mullins is an intriguing adventure story set in the late 1800’s. The historical detailing, as expected from Ms. Mullins, was on point, her descriptions and attention to detail really setting the scene for her story.
I have loved reading the Notebook Mysteries series, so when I saw that this was being released, I was excited to find out what it would contain. Even though this is a standalone story, it does connect to the Notebook Mysteries series in a small way, as our MC here has ties with Emma who is the MC of the Notebook series. I thought that small detail added an extra element of interest to the story, for me.
Mark Sutherland is an intrepid reporter travelling to the Yukon to report on the gold rush there. But this novel is beautifully layered, combining multiple threads which Ms. Mullins has deftly woven into a rich and complex production. Mark’s journey is full of harrowing moments, harsh conditions, mystery, tension, dramatic developments, challenges, family, friendship, hope, resilience, determination, courage, danger, agendas, and even a little romance. His introspective inner dialogue adding an extra facet to the storyline too.
The ending of this book was sweet, and left room for more adventures in the future.
Looking forward to more from Ms. Mullins, soon.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Kimberly Mullins!

This is the first novel about Mark Sutherland and his adventures, and hopefully will continue in a series. I like historical fiction that has a real basis to it, and this novel is based on some historical facts. At the end of the book the author does add a small section of historical context of the novel was based on. There is some mystery and suspense has Mark goes on his journeys as a reporter. The interesting plot line keeps the reader turning the pages to find out what happens at the end. I’ve heard several works by mullins, and I always enjoy the stories that she writes. 1897: A Mark Sutherland Adventure is a historical fiction novel written by Kimberly Mullins. JThe story follows Mark Sutherland, a globe-trotting adventurer, who is hired to investigate a strange occurrence in Texas, among other places. Along with his partners-in-crime, Hans, they soon find themselves caught up in a dangerous plot involving a dangerous cult and a powerful weapon.

The novel is set in the late 19th century and captures the essence of the era through its attention to detail and atmospheric descriptions. The author’s writing style is engaging and keeps the reader’s interest throughout the book.

The characters are well-developed and relatable, and the plot is well-crafted, full of twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the end. Additionally, the novel does not shy away from exploring complex themes such as loyalty, betrayal, and vengeance.

I personally thought the two interconnected stories were disjointed, but keep reading- the author does combine them! I also question if the amount of people in 1897 were literate, but would have to do more research (more piqued my curiosity). I loved the reference to chasing windmills and Don Quixote- adequately describes the theme!

Overall, 1897: A Mark Sutherland Adventure is an entertaining and well-written novel that is sure to appeal to fans of historical fiction and adventure novels alike.

Every book I have read by this author has been part of the same series. This is the first book that deviates away from that and it is even better than I expected it would be. Right from the start, the book is well written, imaginative and intriguing. There are so many twists and turns as the book develops that I could never figure out how I thought it would all turn out.
This author has a very distinctive writing style and it is one I have come to appreciate through all the books I have read. Reporter Mark Sutherland wants to go to the Yukon and witness the gold rush as it happens. He’s read all about the 1849 California gold rush and can’t wait to experience the Yukon.  He wouldn’t miss this one. But how will he get there?

There are other adventures that happen before he achieves his goal of heading to the Yukon. Working as a reporter who travels from place to place, he reports on the events of the day.  As he travels Mark meets people that become important to him. Each person has their own reasons for going on the adventure that will lead them all to the Yukon.

Will there be gold for all? Will everyone end up happy with the outcome?
