Love vampires? Witches? Love triangles? This story is for you. Meet Alena – a vampire/witch hybrid that despite her DNA, is your typical teenager in her senior year of highschool. She leads a double life – split between school with mortals and her vampire life at hom. Not only is she super sheltered by her mom in order to keep her witch side a secret as she learns to navigate the magical world, she’s also on the cheerleading squad at a new school acting like a normal human. Balancing school, homework, boys, and her home vampire/witch studies – she also discovers that she may be more important than her mother has led her to believe when she meets her childhood imaginary friend who has grown up to be distractingly handsome.

Trying to be normal when you are not has it’s own consequences. This is the crux of this interesting fantasy, Kingdom of Embers. Alena is a unique 17 year old girl, a hybrid, half vampire, half witch. Her mother is a Vampire and the identity of her father is unknown. She keeps moving from place to place because of her mother’s job. Now at senior year, with an absentee father and typical teen problems, roller coaster emotions, Alena has a lot on her plate. This is Alena’s journey in her school, her friendships and how she tries to gel in with the rest of her friends and eventually figures out details about her father.

It is a well crafted story. I have read Tricia Copeland before and have thoroughly enjoyed her novels. This one is no exception, and she has tried to meddle and blend two different fantasy tribes which makes the book even interesting.
Cannot wait for the sequels.

lately we’ve been hearing from vampires and witches more and more.
This book is not just one of the many, it is incredibly detailed and the creation of the characters has surprised me since I started reading, since although the main character is only a teenager; she is complex and the situations she goes through are situations that require maturity.
The truth is a pretty incredible book and I think the potential of the author has caught my attention from the first chapters so I want to continue this journey with the rest of the saga.

What an amazing start to a paranormal fantasy story! It is full of all of the wonders of magic, vampires, and witches not to forget danger, adventure, and suspense. One thing I love about Tricia Copeland’s story is the attention to detail in all her books. This book is about Alena. She is a vampire-witch hybrid whose vampire mother has sworn into secrecy. There are rules but will she ignore the rules when a handsome childhood imaginary friend comes into her life. Now, will the handsome imaginary friend be surprised by his beautiful pretend friend? The two young imaginary friends figure out how they are together at that moment in time. I highly recommend this book to see what happens to the two imaginary friends. I cannot wait to see what is coming next in the series.

Kingdom of Embers by Tricia Copeland gets 5 stars from me!! This was an amazing young adult novel! It has an amazing balance of magic, mystery, and romance to make you stay up all night!

Following Alena as she navigates a world where everything is normal for maybe 10 minutes? She tackles each problem with a sort of dark optimism that only a teenager can have. Between wanting to be normal and date, to not knowing how to make friends or deal with so many men, Alena has to learn why her mother is keeping her a secret and how to deal with bloodlust and magic gone awry.

So many good things to say about this book! Tricia Copeland’s first book in the Kingdom Journal series, Kingdom of Embers has fantastic world-building and suspense at every turn, making it impossible to put the book down for very long!

The character of Alena was unlike any supernatural being I’ve ever read about before. Her very existence as a half-witch, half-vampire could cause war and watching her keep it a secret from the people in her life was interesting. Add that on top of brewing tensions between the witches and wizards and the cliffhanger at the end of the book, this series is bound to be an amazing one!

Vampires and witches, what more could you want? This book gave me serious Vampire Diaries and Originals vibes which is definitely a good thing since I love both shows. The story line captured my attention and drew me right in from the very first page. Alena is fascinating and I really enjoyed reading about her internal struggles as she was discovering herself and coming into her powers. Hunter and Alena are absolutely magical together. Their chemistry is instantaneous and there were some twists in the story that I did not see coming but that I thoroughly enjoyed! I can’t wait to read the rest of this story and find out what happens next.

Unexpected HighSchool Fantasy

The author really surprised me with her ability to make the main Character so relatable. Alena is a half witch half vampire in highschool who is trying to learn more about her heritage. Alena is the typical neqly 18 year old girl who is questioning everything and has the urge to learn everything she can about her self and her family. I usually don’t care for Fantasy books like this one because the main character can be a bit whiny and too immature, but the author did this character so much justice!

After reading To Be a Fae Queen, I was so excited to get my hands on this series! (If you haven’t read that yet, go get it now! It’s amazing!) We start off learning about Alena, her teenage angst, and her difficulties among the human world knowing that she is an illegal hybrid vampire-witch. She moved constantly as a child due to her mother’s ranks within the vampire community and was never able to stay close with friends but was determined to appear as normal as possible to the human population. As a child, she had imaginary friends that she played with and spoke with regularly. Is it possible that they are real people? With magic, who knows? She is a cheerleader at her high school and is seen as the weird girl with a weird diet. Cue one random boy teasing her relentlessly until the drama starts to really unfold. Honestly, I couldn’t put these books down and ended up reading the whole series in a weekend! I don’t want to give too much away – but, Tricia, you have done it again! And I love everything about this series. The world and character building are perfect for this genre, and I am hooked to any and everything you want to put on paper! Don’t stop at book one! Grab the whole series and cuddle up with some coffee for the weekend!

I really like finding new series from authors that I like. This definitely fit the bill. I like the author’s refreshing take on this. as I love any Vampire book regardless of genre. I like how the story line isn’t predictable and that the author makes sure you are glued to the book.

I like how there is a good mix of action and adventure. I am really impressed with this younge adult fantasy. The characters are all believable and relatable. I really cannot wait for the next book in this series. Can she break the curse? What will happen next. I am on the edge of my seat waiting.

Alena Scott is a forbidden hybrid; half witch, half vampire. Her mother is the queen of vampires and Alena has no idea who her father is. She’s the new girl and while she’s co-captain off the cheerleaders, she doesn’t quite feel like she fits in. She meets new people and reconnect with someone from her past who happens to be linked to a dangerous person. Alena’s mother is overprotective, so Alena keeps these friends a secret from her mother until a threat is revealed. Will she ever feel like she belongs? How will things change for her? And will she learn about all that her mother has kept hidden from her? Left with a cliffhanger, I immediately bought the rest of the series and can’t wait to dig in!

Urban fantasy setting with vampires, witches, and mystery.

Alena is different. Alena moves around a lot, she’s always the new kid with allergies but they aren’t just any kind of allergies. Alena is the child of a vampire and a witch. An outlawed pairing. She is counting down the days until she can begin her coven training and turn 18 so she can get out from under her mother’s structure rules. All while trying to unravel the mystery of who her father is, what her mother is searching for, and navigate a new high school her senior year.

When on a outing with her mother, looking for what, she doesn’t know. Alena sees a boy whom 13 years prior, she thought was one of her 2 imaginary friends. Slowly things start to spiral leading up to a climax that leads you to immediately getting the next book in the series.

I have loved just about everything I have picked up from Tricia Copeland in the past so when I saw the gorgeous cover from Kingdom of Embers and the synopsis it was a no-brainer one-click for me. I was thrilled with my decision too! This was quite the read and I was so excited this is the beginning of a new to me series that I get to dive into! The mix of the witch and vampire worlds as well as other layers of paranormal twists really kept me on my toes and engrossed as I read and totally glued to my kindle. I could barely put this down. I just had to know how things were going to play out for the main lead, Alena. I will say I didn’t quite see that cliffy coming but I can totally handle it because book two is available now, Kingdom of Darkness, and I am going to scoop that up as soon as I finish typing this up!

Kingdom of Embers: Extended Finale by Tricia Copeland is the first book in the Kingdom Journals series. This is a fantastic Paranormal YA book and a great start to a new series. The author has created such an interesting story that felt fresh and different to other vampire stories. As a genre that is oversaturated it was a nice change to pick up one that not only tried to be different but actually succeeded.
I thought the main character was a breath of fresh air. She was relatable and engaging. I really enjoyed delving into her story. I wanted to know more and felt like we took the journey with her.
This is a brilliant start to a new series and I can’t wait to read the second book.

After reading the synopsis I was a little nervous that I would not like this book after all I have never read or watched anything to do with vampire diaries. However, I am adventurous when it comes to reading and am willing to pick up a book not fitting within my normal selections. I am so glad I did just that because once started I could not put this one down.
Alena is so relatable with all the trials and tribulations she must go through as a teenager, add in being half vampire and half witch this just spells disaster. She already knows that her kind is forbidden because having no dominant side to her abilities and not having any weakened human qualities makes her someone that vampires and witches were taught to fear. This leads her on a journey of discovery of not only her powers but her own significance in this world which is relatable to everyone on this planet. When she meets someone like herself known that there are two forbidden children out there and the age-old battle of good vs. evil. Who will come out on top? As soon as I finished this book, I went out looking for the second one in this series. They are beautifully written, completely bingeable books that will leave you on the edge of your seat never expecting what might come next. Do yourself a favor and read this book, you won’t regret it.

This is the first book I have read from this author and now she has a new fan. I love a good paranormal story but she exceeded all my expectations. This is the first book in the series of Kingdom Journals and it is a great way to start the series. I could not put this book down until the end. These characters drew me right from the start of the story and it only took me a day to devour this addictive book.

Alena Scott is not your ordinary teenager. She is a mix of witch and vampire which is unlawful in her world. Alena is a senior in high school and she wants to fit in but she knows she is different. She is shocked when she finds someone that brings her back to her childhood. Alena finds her imaginary friend all grown up and she feels something she can’t explain for him. They end up trying to find out what bonds them together. Alena might find a way to free herself from the curse but is it too good to be true? Will Alena find what she is looking for or will she be left in the dark?

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Kingdom of Embers is the first book in Tricia Copeland’s Kingdom Journals series. It’s an urban paranormal fantasy series that draws on many familiar creatures and tropes while bringing something fresh to the reader. I particularly liked the incorporation of imaginary friends!
Alena is a fun heroine, trying hard to be a normal teenager whilst dealing with her decidedly unnormal home life and powers. Her goals for the year include getting decent grades and being a successful teenager. She’s not interested in dating. She’s definitely not interested in drawing too much attention to herself.
This is an engaging, enjoyable book! It reminded me a bit of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, with the threat of dangerous vampires and the protagonist with a flair for gymnastics and cheerleading. It will appeal to fans of this and other high school-based urban fantasy.
For me, this is a five-star read. I’m pleased to see that there are quite a few books in the series already – they’re definitely going on my tbr list!

Kingdom of Embers by Tricia Copeland is about a forbidden half breed named Alena. Alena is half Vampire, half witch. The vampires and witches hate each other which makes her existence dangerous. On top of all that she is also facing the dangers of high school. Being the weird new girl in her last year of school is hard enough without all of the added drama.

Alena is trying to find out more about herself and her abilities. Her biological father being a mystery has her intrigued about her witch side. Her mother being a controlling, strict vampire has Alena curious about how her vampire side works. Along the way she befriends multiple creatures, on both sides, learning more than she ever has.

I loved this book from start to finish. It was action packed with a touch of romance. The flow was very smooth. After I was done reading this book, I immediately looked for the second book in the series called “Kingdom of Darkness”. I can’t wait to start reading it!

Kingdom of Embers is book one in the Kingdom Journals series by Tricia Copeland. I couldn’t put this one down. This is my first read by this author and I was impressed!
I think for me, it was the combination of fantasy, reality and suspense that kept me turning the pages. I was being drawn into this world that had me thinking/feeling it was real.

Alena is half witch – half vampire, and that is a no go. So of course she has to pretend to be something that she’s not, human. I really enjoyed her character. She’s a good kid but she’s got a lot of questions that are going unanswered, like who’s her dad and where is he? And she wants to get to the bottom of it regardless of what her mom says and the danger it could cause.
When she runs into her childhood imaginary friend, she realizes he wasn’t imaginary after all.
They get together to see if they can solve the mystery of how something like this could be possible.
The book does end in a cliffhanger, so now I have to get the rest of the books in this series.

Kingdom of Embers introduces a series with a fresh take on the supernatural. Alena is a hybrid, something she has to keep secret not only from the humans she goes to school with but from others in the supernatural community. Things in her already complicated life take a turn for the strange-er when she sees a grown-up version of a guy she thought was simply a childhood imaginary friend. As the two try to figure out why they can both recall each other from childhood, the mystery of their companionship gives way to a much larger problem. Filled with plenty of world-building and fascinating characterizations, Kingdom of Embers sets up what promises to be an intriguing series.

Tricia Copeland is a great writer. I enjoyed this book, but it did take me a little time to get into it; just a little slow on the takeoff is all. The character development was amazing. Copeland had me convinced that I could smell Theron in the stadium and Hunter’s cold hands on mine. I also enjoyed the different take on vampires and witches, it was refreshing.

I would recommend this book to any reader that enjoyed the Twilight series. I have a feeling that the drama is only beginning with Alena and Hunter. I’m looking forward to reading the second book.

I really liked this book, and finished it in one sitting. We get to follow Alena as she learns more about the dual sides to her identity, and what she is capable of from both the vampiric and witchy sides of her DNA. She is a very relatable character, and I was instantly hooked. Her curiousity sometimes gets the better of her, resulting in some interesting plot points. She is also dating for the first time in her life, and has several suitors who are interested in her. I kept hoping for more fighting or uses of her powers, but it seems like book 2 will be well situated for those. I definitely will be reading the next book in the series to see what happens next!

Her attention to details give her stories a realistic feel and make them really pop. This book is no different. I enjoyed this book and it is one of my favorites by her yet. This is a well written story about Alena and an ancient spell that needs to be reversed. She likes to ignore rules and pretend to be something she is not. What will happen when she realizes that she holds the key to reversing this spell? This is a great young adult story that took me on a magical adventures with characters that brought the story to life. The growth of the plot and characters made you want to read more. I highly recommend this book and this author.
