Cute story that teaches the importance of following through with something you start whether you win or lose. I work primarily with elementary-age kids and believe this will be a great story to read to the kids.

This is a very cute story about not giving up. Sometimes, you have to fail a few times in order to succeed. You learn that in some cases, you have to look at something in a whole new way. You also learn that inspiration can come from the most unexpected places. A lot of morals to this adorable story!

After reading a couple other books by this author. I just had to pick up this one also, I always really enjoy reading Terri Sabol stories. The lessons she writes about help people of all ages, from pet loss, feeling envious, to this book where it’s about never giving up 🥰. It is about trying and failing, then picking yourself up and trying again, Trying different ways until you find the best solution for you.
You know I just have to try that recipe at the end 🤣😍

What a wonderfully sweet book about trying and trying again! My two kiddos are 8 and 11 so they get to hear me talk about trying quite a bit. When we picked up this book to read together, I was very excited as not only does it help teach problem solving, experimenting, and failing at times, it’s about cooking which is a loved activity in our home. These illustrations are just gorgeous and really make the kids feel like part of the story. There is an awesome recipe in the back which my kids followed, and after a couple of tries they nailed it! The inclusion of the recipe was such a big bonus in my opinion because it gives them something to physically act on what they just read. I highly recommend picking this up and sharing with the little ones in your life so they can try, try again!

This was a beautiful story about the powers of persistence and flexibility as well as being open to new ideas as sometimes the inspiration for an award winning product can come from the strangest of places!
It would be a great story to read with little ones who are struggling with new situations such as starting school, making new friends or trying something new for the first time.
Highly recommended!

This is such a cute story. I love that this book has so much to teach its readers. The biggest being perseverance. I love that Ben continues to compete despite losing after several years to Sofia. I also loved that not only did Ben have to persevere but that he also had to try different things to make it work. This embodies what I am always teaching my students. This book is so cute and I love that it has a recipe for readers to try as well. I think that is an amazing connection that readers can do to take the book further! I can think of a few kiddos on my holiday list that will be getting this book.

What a sweet little story about a young kid not giving up. Ben has been entering a baking competition for several years with his biscuit recipe. He never places first. But that doesn’t stop him from trying each and every year. This year however he is determined to change that. With the help of none other than his cat he tries a new idea. This book is perfect for early school aged kids and teaches a great lesson of try, try again. I also loved how Ben’s dad is right there supporting him the whole way!

What a delightful tale highlighting self-reliant problem-solving abilities and imparting knowledge about baking elements.
Kneading a Winning Idea is a book centered around crafting delectable biscuits. Despite Ben’s annual attempts to clinch victory in the local baking competition, the ideal recipe continues to elude him. However, inspiration from a furry companion leads him to concoct a winning bread that finally secures his triumph. Ben discovers the significance of persistence, regardless of the outcome. The story instills problem-solving skills, emphasizing that experiencing loss or failure is not inherently harmful.
Our feline friends are constant kneaders, making this story particularly endearing to us. I love that it also came with a fun recipe. It’s a wonderful addition to the narrative and a perfect opportunity for my son and me to connect in the kitchen after reading!

What a fun story! Kneading a Winning Idea is teaching how to problem solve, not giving up and persevering and thinking a bit outside of the box. This story not only can be enjoyed by the young but also the young at heart. We all could learn some good lessons that this story is geared to.

With the support of his dad, Ben tries all sorts of ideas for his recipe to be better but when he wants to give up….a new idea helps Ben that might be what he has been looking for and hoping his dad and the judges will love.

It was a great book for my four-year-old. It kept his interest, he sat still for the whole thing, which is usually a struggle. It showed him not to give up. The illustrations were beautiful. He loved seeing what the cat and dog were getting up to on each page, especially when the cat was sitting on top of the dog. He also loves experimenting and baking and is excited to try out the recipe after we pick up the ingredients.

Kneading a Winning Idea by Terri Sabol – Review by Nicole Thompson

“Kneading a Winning Idea: A Delicious Lesson in Perseverance” by Terri Sabol is a charming children’s book that brings together the joy of baking and the power of determination. As someone who once competed in a 4-H biscuit contest in fourth grade, the clever title and engaging storyline instantly resonated with me.

The story revolves around Ben, a young baker who competes annually in a biscuit contest but consistently falls short of first place, thanks to his fierce rival, Sofia. When Ben’s father challenges him to compete again, Ben embarks on a journey of experimentation, with a little help from his cat, to perfect his biscuit recipe. The book imparts valuable lessons about perseverance and the importance of confronting one’s feelings, which can be challenging for young children.

This heartwarming tale not only captivates young readers with its vibrant illustrations and engaging narrative but also offers them a delicious bonus: a biscuit recipe to try at home. “Kneading a Winning Idea” is a delightful and impactful read that celebrates the magic of determination and the sweet taste of success. It’s a must-have addition to any young reader’s bookshelf.

This book has been created with the whole family in mind. The story was fun, engaging and we loved reading it. Every one of us was rooting for Ben and wanted to see him win the competition. The story was easy to follow and entertaining the whole way through.
Even more than the story, we loved the recipe provided at the end of the book. As soon as we saw that, time was set aside specifically for us to do the baking, which was even more fun than the reading. This book has been one of our favourites of the year and I foresee many more baking days to come.

This was such a lovely story! It was really easy to read and follow and has a great meaning behind it. It is really important for children to understand that not everything is easy and sometimes we do have really persevere with things in life. I think using baking as an idea for this was great as baking can be one of those things you really do have to preserver with to get it right. There are lots of talking points in this book for children to discuss what is happening in the story and think of things that they have had to try hard with. I love that the recipe was included as well.

Beautiful and fluffy. This book was beautiful and honestly not the best thing to read while hungry. Lol. I love how it has Ben sticking to what he loves to make as he learns a “new” way of making it the try and finally win first place over Sofia. It’s always the simple differences that make all the change and love how Miss Kitty is his inspiration to try something new. The recipe at the back yes please I will certainly be trying it soon.

This is a cute book about a young man who is ready to enter a baking contest. He makes really good biscuits, but they are pretty basic and not “good enough” to win the contest. With the encouragement of his dad, who becomes his taste tester, he finds the perfect recipe for his biscuits.
This book is about practice and perseverance. It would be a great teaching tool for a young child experiencing life’s difficulties. It could be a great encouragement if read to them/with them by someone who would become their “taste tester” and cheerleader in life.

Kneading a Winning Idea is a fun story with a prized recipe just waiting to be taste tested to boot. Terri has incorporated a message for young or old to take to heart.

But it is not just a story it is a learning tool as well as Ben learns the importance of trying and sticking it through to the finish whether you win or lose. It teaches them to problem solve whilst also being taught that losing or failure is not a bad thing. I think this is a message that is severely missing in children of today.

It is aimed at pre tweens, children aged between 3–8-year-olds who just love to be involved in cooking.

The beautiful pictures done by Pei Jen are bright and colourful and really help to bring this story to life.

A great idea for Christmas which is coming up. Enjoy.

Ben is ready to enter the annual bake off and is wondering if he should veer away from his buttermilk biscuit recipe which has gotten him second place in the past. Finding inspiration to improve his recipe. Will he figure out a new technique to help him win first place?

I liked the way that Ben worked through trying to figure out whether to use a new recipe or improve his recipe. I think this is a great book to interact with young children about cooking.
