Another great read by Lois Wickstrom! These are all such good learning books for kids. My 4 year old granddaughter loves each one, especially this one. She was very interested in what was happening with the caterpillar. As always, we definitely recommend!

I always enjoy reading Lois Wickstrom stories i like to put them up on the tv and read them to my son, nieces and nephews.it was a quick read and i love how it shows the different stages of the life cycle for the monarch caterpillar.being that its almost spring i’m excited to go outside to find out very own to watch and report/ learn about. Im definitely going to use that website to get those flowers so we can have lots of butterfly this season.

Loretta’s Caterpillar is the third book in the Loretta’s Insects series by Lois Wickstrom. It is another fun, fact-based, interesting, educational, and entertaining illustrated children’s storybook.
Loretta loves insects and this time she discovers and then cares for a butterfly egg, watching over and protecting it from harm as it moves through its cycle. We get to learn about butterfly lifecycles along the way, as well as facts about Monarch butterflies- how to tell males from females, their migration routes, their food source etc.
This is not just a cute story, it also encourages children to learn while they read. I read this story with my grandson, but as with the other books in this particular series, the illustrations aren’t quite as eye catching as some of Ms. Wickstrom’s other books and didn’t grab his attention like the others have done. The ‘new’ cover is great, but unfortunately the illustrations inside the book aren’t up to the same standard. Great little story though.

This book explains the Metamorphosis of butterflies in an easy way to understand. Perfect for kids to comprehend. Short enough that there attention span doesn’t waver. A great book I recommend. Very educational for kids.

Loretta loves the outdoors and especially a garden and all it has to offer. In this book we see Loretta watching over an egg and seeing it grow and change through its circle of life to become a monarch butterfly.
I remember being a kid and Dad taking us out to catch the caterpillars and chrysalis. We would take them home and watch them through their change to a beautiful butterfly and then release them back into the wild. Now as an adult I have taken my grandkids to do the same.
It is a lovely story that will inspire kids to venture into their own gardens and find out what treasures they can find. The pictures are bright and colourful. Lois has also provided information on how to start your collection to nurture the process yourself.

Loretta loves various types of bugs. This book focuses on monarch butterflies.
In May, Loretta sees a milkweed field full of monarch butterflies but shortly after seeing them, they disappear. This upsets Loretta, as she really enjoys looking at butterflies. She makes a trip to the milkweed field and sees lots of little “seeds” on the back of plants. She soon learns that these “seeds” are going to turn into caterpillars, which turn into butterflies. Loretta is able to watch the various stages in which a butterfly is formed.
I am a huge fan of Lois Wickstrom and her books!! This one is unique in that some of the words are different shaped to represent what they are saying. There is also a bit of information in the back of the book about monarch butterflies, milkweed plants, and where to obtain milkweed seeds. It also shows the differences in male and female monarchs. I learned a couple of things reading this book! This is a great book to read to anyone of any age and would be great in a homeschool, daycare, personal library, etc!

This book is packed with information and colourful illustrations. The story will captivate children while they learn the life cycle of the monarch butterfly; from the egg to metamorphosis to migration. Even I learned things that I didn’t know. Never would I have thought that it took five generations of butterflies to migrate from the Stares to Canada. It’s absolutely amazing! The book even teaches you how to differentiate between male and female butterflies. I e read many books by this author and this one has to be my favourite. Your children will love it too.

I love that this book teaches kids about butterflies. Their lifecycle, how to tell the difference between a male and female and background on monarch butterflies. It is also interesting adults to learn as well, if they haven’t already. The art is lovely to look at and the different words on each page in a different font style really are eye catching The only thing that was kind of hard for me to grasp was the name Loretta chooses for the butterfly. I don’t think it is really kid friendly to try and read. Overall great story for children.

This has fast become my favorite kids science story book. Loretta has adventures learning about monarch butterflies this time. The author includes terrific tidbits about them in the back. These entertaining stories that I use with our homeschool and my kiddo loves them. The story is educational and fun. The pictures are colorful. The kids learn new words about the butterfly. Every child’s library should have this one.

Lois is a former high school chemistry teacher and former head science teacher at Science in the City Summer Camp in Philadelphia. She has also been an adjunct science teacher at University of South Florida. Since retiring, she continues to take science classes. Her class in Forensic Biology led to Little Red, The Detective, in which Red is studying fingerprint identification, so she can tell that “Grandma” isn’t who she says she is.
Lois has taken so many science classes that she believes science is the solution to almost every problem, including the dilemmas in fairy tales. She has invented what she calls Science Folktales. In each science-based tale, the protagonist achieves a better ending than the original because of learning scientific principles. She has turned some of these tales into plays.
She has also created a series of Mermaid Science stories, which make use of water science.
Lois is married to the love of her life. She has two children, four grandchildren and a dog.
