My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Grace Locke is a disgraced lawyer trying to get her career back on track. She has a shot at being the great lawyer she once was when the daughter of her ex-husbands mistress is arrested and charged with murder. Did she do it? All the evidence says she did, but Grace knows there is corruption within the department and vows to leave no stone unturned. Will she be able to prove her client is innocent or will the corruption prove to be too much to overcome? This was a great start to the series. It was fast paced and flowed nicely, but was easy to keep up with and easy to read.

I absolutely love mysteries and this one just kept me hooked from the start.
Grace is our main character and we slowly get her story throughout the book as needed. This picks up with a bang, pun intended, and really doesnt let up from there.
I am usually pretty good and figuring out “the bad guy” but was proven wrong here.
I will for sure be reading more from this author if this is anything to go by for the future.

I could not put this book down! States of Grace follows a down on her luck (seriously down down down) gal named Grace. The mystery, the action, everything was such a win for me. I think I was having a brain issue reading so had to back track to make sure I was following the story right but that was more a user error than the book itself. Great read! Great story line and amazing characters!

States of Grace is an amazing book by Mandy Miller! The characters are realistic and the story is believable, creating a combination that was hard to put down. Grace Locke’s fall from grace, pun intended, gives her a bit of an edgier, raw side that was very entertaining. And the mystery and crime behind the characters evolved so smoothly that the twists and turns were still easily navigated. The ending definitely left me wanting more of Grace. States of Grace was the first in a (hopefully) long series that I can’t wait to read more of!

This was gripping and entertaining.
The true meaning of mystery.
I had no idea what was going to happen,
That twist made me cry because just why.
It is nice to see a female vigilante turned hero.
So many struggles happened to our main character and Grace is a good name.
With a fall from Grace she fund her way.
It was not easy, we have murder and lies and mystery that have you truly guessing.
I put this down a few times but overall it was entertaining and worth reading.
This was a refreshing read for me, I will definitely be looking more into mystery.

States of Grace is the first book in the Grace Locke series. I was blown away by the characters and the story. Grace is a wounded warrior and a prosecutor who is down on her luck. She is battling her own demons while trying to keep her life afloat. She is strong and determined but also has her issues. I love that she is not a perfect person but truly human and realistic.
The setting is South Florida and it helps add an extra layer to the story. I really enjoyed the characters and storyline. The plot twists and turns were great. I look forward to reading more in this series and from this author in the future. I want more of Grace Locke.

This debut novel is so thoughtfully written that it’s hard to believe it’s a debut! From the beginning the other beings forth a plot that leads with and intelligence not often seen in debut books. The plot picks up speed from the first pages of the book and never lets up. The author’s plot line examines the twists and turns of the modern addiction crisis while also digging deep into the somewhat twisted legal system. Her characters are very complex and carry a true depth to them. I was delighted that a female war vet was used as the main character. Our females vets fight right along side our men and yet never get the deserved appreciation. It was an interesting and quick read.

This book has it all- suspense, mystery, a comeback tale, and a hint of romance. The lead character is imperfect- she struggles to clean up her profanity-laced vocabulary (who hasn’t struggled with this at some point?) She is going through a divorce. She is an attorney who is picking up both her professional life and her personal life from the bottom of a garbage heap, sifting through some hard truths, and striving to not merely survive, but to live in every sense of the word. Ultimately, she risks her life, and her sanity for an innocent client. I enjoyed the humanity of the protagonist.

I can’t believe this is the author’s first novel. It definitely doesn’t read like a debut novel. The story is beautifully executed, building well while still being fast paced. I loved how the main character wasn’t the typical perfect character. She was down on her luck, flawed, and relatable. I look forward to reading anything else this author writes!

I cannot believe States of Grace is a debut novel! The complexity of the main character, Grace Locke, is multi-layered but relatable and I rooted for her from page one. The author writes as if she is well-seasoned with multiple best-selling novels under her proverbial belt. I flew through this book, hungry for the next installment of the Grace Locke Mystery Series. The story is filled with twists and turns that Grace must navigate to not only try and prove the innocence of her high-profile client but save her career. I cannot recommend this book and author enough and am looking forward to snatching up her next works as soon as they’re available!

This book was so perfect, and beautifully done it is incredibly hard for me to believe that it’s the authors first novel. I was originally drawn to this novel by its cover and the blurb on the back. But once I started the novel I couldn’t put it down. The authors writing flows just as beautifully as the plot. This book has everything you could want in a lawyering thriller filled with mystery, murder, lawyers, the Florida state bar and so much more. The plot flowed so beautifully that the pages just flew by and I couldn’t put it down. Grace’s character really spoke to me, even though she’s been knocked down several times she just gets back up and fights even harder. She’s really a character that you can get behind. But in the long run this story was so perfect that I can’t wait for the next book from this author.

Grace is at the last straw with life and her career, with a pretty big addiction can she help herself and also help the young girl she has just taken on as a client.

Grace is at a low point in her life, just been released from jail and needing to raise some money to survive she is more comfortable prosecuting the innocent not the perceived guilty, but as she works through the case. Grace starts to investigate and finds stuff that is wrong and she is starting thinking maybe there is more to this case than first thought.

I really enjoyed this story, this is the first book I have read by this author and it was thrilling and it grips you. I loved the way the book weaves through the clues and you piece together with Grace to find if her client is really guilty.

The characters are well developed and I loved the fact that Grace is a little flawed, being an army vet with a disability was brilliant to read, the interactions with the secondary characters are great and enhances the story.

I can’t wait to read more books by this author in the future.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Grace Locke is a woman with an interesting past and an uncertain future, she is an Army veteran who served in some of the most harsh environments out there until an IED went off beneath the vehicle she was travelling in and meant she lost her leg. That was a pivotal moment in her life, like others before then, but it was a pivot that started a downward turns of events including addiction, an arrest and nearly losing her license to practice Law, but despite all of these challenges while also living in a motel and going through a divorce, Grace is tough and does what she needs to, to get herself out of the hole she has made for herself through her indiscretions.

After she has successfully finished defending another guilty party, Grace despises what she has to do to get by, but has no other choice at this very moment in time, until she sees some breaking news in the bar she frequents while she is drinking her espresso and coke mix. It is a high profile murder case where the accused is a young girl from a rich family and she realises that the mother of said girl is the very same woman who is the reason she is going through a divorce. Grace decides to pull a couple off strings she may regret so that she can be the one to defend this girl and hopefully get enough money to move up in the world again, or at least not have to live of ramen all the time.

As Grace succeeds in getting onto the case, she starts to think that maybe she has gotten in a little bit over her head as the evidence against her client continues to pile up, but the accused are always guilty aren’t they? In this case, it is the opposite and as Grace starts to dig deeper to prove her client’s innocence, she discovers that the victim was not all that they were shown to be and that they were involved in the dark side of a underground pill mill system, one that Grace is all too familiar with, but will Grace be able to gather the evidence she needs to prove her client’s innocence in time, or will the police remain one step ahead and garner the conviction they so desperately seek? This is a thrilling mystery which will keep you guessing as you follow the case along amid misdirection, secrets, revelations, grudges and guilt where nothing is as it seems and everything is on the line.

Grace is a down on her luck former state prosecutor who finds herself fresh out of jail, in recovery, and just trying to get by. She finds herself on the opposite side of justice now defending criminals instead of prosecuting them. When the case that could put her back on top “seemingly” falls into her lap. This book was a non-stop read through. I could not put it down, and for someone who doesn’t delve into this specific genre, that’s saying something! I enjoyed everything about this book. The story. From cover to cover Grace shows us that she is a real woman with real issues, she’s facing them and is determined to get her life back. I love that the author gets gritty in her character building of Grace. I’ve always been a fan of law and order type dramas, and after reading this, I am happy to admit this would be amazing in movie form. I’m already looking forward to book two!

Grace Locke is a down on her luck prosecutor and disabled army veteran who is very close to losing her law licence. Fresh out of jail, she is now living in a run-down motel room and eating ramen noodles. As much as she appreciates the second chance she is given, Grace is not at all happy that she is now forced to defend the types of criminals that she used to love sending to jail. As if that was not bad enough, Grace finds herself caught up in the dark world of drugs and addiction, the very thing that landed her in jail. One of the criminals Grace is forced to defend should be a slam dunk because, in Grace’s eyes, the teen is clearly guilty.

Grace soon makes the startling discovery that her client may be innocent, leading her to start digging for the truth. The more she digs the more Grace realizes that the dead guy was involved heavily in the criminal underworld. She is now racing against the clock to find the real killer and prove her client’s innocence.

States of Grace was fast paced and hard to put down from the first page. Grace’s character is real, raw, gritty, and believable as she struggles to remain sober while also coping with her disability. This legal thriller was full of twists and turns which lead up to a surprise ending. I won’t spoil the ending; you will have to read this book yourself to find out.

If you love a good legal drama…this is for you!

Grace is trying to pick up the pieces of her life after a recent DUI. She is going through a divorce, she is battling an addiction to painkillers after losing her leg in Fallujah, and she is trying not get disbarred in the state of Florida. To remain in their good graces, she finds herself on the other side of the aisle in the courtroom where she is now a public defender.

Through some not so up-and-up means, Grace finds herself defending Zoe. Zoe is accused of murdering her guidance counselor. Zoe also happens to be the daughter of her soon-to-be ex-husband’s mistress. At the onset, it looks like Zoe is guilty. But, Grace is not so easily convinced. She believes there is more at play here…and she is going to prove it. However, with cops thwarting her progress at every move, she finds herself in deeper than she could have imagined…and it could ruin both their lives. Will she be able to find the truth before it’s too late?

There are so many great characters in this story that keep it interesting. Grace is wonderful while being real. I swear, her fake leg is a character all on its own! I enjoyed the realistic situation of the story and the inclusion of all the courtroom moments. I felt like I was reading a crime-drama movie!

States of Grace is the first book in the Grace Locke Mystery Series and debut novel by Mandy Miller. This story pulled me in right from the beginning and kept me engrossed the whole way through. I was not expecting that from a debut novel- but, as I just discovered, this author really knows how to write a compelling story- full of depth, attention to detail, vivid descriptions, palpable tension, and intrigue. Colour me hooked!
Grace Locke is trying to get her life back on track after a fall from grace- but things aren’t going quite to plan. She is an attorney, living day to day, trying to make ends meet. With quite a lot of baggage, this war veteran will need to dig deep in order to overcome her demons. When a new murder case comes to her attention- things quickly become complicated- there is definitely more to the case than meets the eye. What happens makes or a thrilling read!
If you love crime and investigation stories, thrillers, or mysteries with plenty of drama, intrigue, and suspense wrapped up in a tightly woven and engrossing story- then this is definitely the book for you!
Can’t wait to see where we go from here. Bring on Book #2!!
Happy reading!

Thank you, Mandy Miller!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a book that kept me gripped from beginning to end and I still didn’t see the end coming. I love Grace’s character. She is someone who isn’t perfect. She has her demons with drugs and alcohol but she is working her way back to the person she used to be. I love the fact she is a very strong, determined character. That she is a fighter who refuses to give up or quit for an easier life.

This story has mystery, murder, court drama, corrupt cops and more. You never know what’s going to happen next and if Grace will succeed with the odds stacked against her. But with a young girl’s life on the line Grace will stop at nothing to get to the truth.

This is a very good book when it comes to the big three of mysteries, crimes, and even thrillers.

Grace Locke, a disgraced prosecutor, and handicapped Army veteran is on the verge of losing her legal license forever. Grace has no choice but to turn to the evil side, defending the sorts of criminals she used to enjoy locking up while living in a no-tell hotel and eating ramen. To make matters worse, she’s battling the drug addiction that has landed her in this situation in the first place. Grace arranges to represent a trust-fund youngster accused of capital murder to pay the bills since she has few other choices to save her profession. Her strategy, however, has two drawbacks. One—Grace feels that being accused is the same as being guilty. Two, the accused is Grace’s spouse’s daughter, who is the daughter of the beauty queen who took Grace’s husband. Grace is surprised to learn that her client may not be guilty after all.

Grace believes the only reason that makes sense is that the dead man was involved in the criminal underworld. With the cops looking the other way and misdirecting her every step, the only explanation that makes sense to her is that the dead man was involved in the criminal underworld. When Grace uncovers convincing proof of her client’s innocence, the search for the true killer begins, leading her deep into Florida’s illegal pill mill trade. Is it too late for Grace to save her little client and herself from the execution chamber?

I loved this story. I loved every page of it. Every chapter was exciting. This is my first book in the series from this author and I can’t wait to read the rest of her books.

An intriguing legal thriller
I was curious when I read the blurb and was very quickly drawn in from the first page. Grace is a very relatable character, with a rawness that I found endearing. All the characters were well developed and the writing is well paced and did not lag once. With twists, a bit of humour and a lot of mystery I was kept intrigued right until end. Strong debut and series starter.

An innocent young girl in need of someone to save her and now that she believes Zoe is innocent Grace is doing just that. A former prosecutor and solider, Grace is tougher than she looks and Zoe needs her to be tough. Zoe’s life hasn’t been easy and to top off all the other misery now she has been wrongly convicted of a crime she didn’t commit.
This novel was so fast paced I hadn’t realized 3 hours had passed and I was half way through. The detail was so rich I can’t imagine the sheer amount of research that had to go into making this crime/mystery novel as amazing as it is. The author did an unbelievable job. States of Grace was a really good book, I was shocked to see it was the first by this author. It had a lot of hints toward previous events, I thought for sure I missed a book. I hope there is a prequel in the future, as I want to know more about Grace’s past. I want to know about her military time, her marriage/ex husband and her hitting rock bottom. It seems there is quite the backstory and I want to read more about it… However, that being said, the book was really good. I was hooked from start to finish and didn’t want to put it down. The book was action packed from start to finish. The characters are well developed and have good solid relationships. The author really did her research and it shows. The ending was not at all what I expected, which is good. I like when I don’t have it all figured out, and to be caught off guard. I highly recommend this book, and am super impressed for a first time author. I genuinely can’t wait to read more about Grace Locke!

This book is an arm-chair gripper from page 1. The action in the plot grab you from the court scene in Chapter 1. It’s kind of seedy and grody but she’s trying to change things around. We all have to hit bottom. She hits it HARD. These characters are fantastic. I felt like I was reading a seedy detective/court novel. It was fantastic because I’m a huge fan of these. States of Grace is full of twists and believable characters! The main character is not the typical “perfect” heroine where everything always works out, which was relieving. Grace Locke is a lawyer on the verge of losing her license, and must figure out a way to pay the bills. She takes on a teenage client who she does not believe is guilty, and determined to prove it. It does have a little bit of a slow start, but it builds up quickly once things start to progress, and then shoots off to 90 mph. I enjoyed the mix of the mystery and legal standpoints, and how stubborn the character is (which is relatable, haha). The author’s use of details was very well done and made the story entertaining, but still believable. Definitely give this author and book a chance. I read this entire book in about 2 days, and am looking forward to reading more from this author, and this series.

This is a wonderfully done crime drama. The story is one that grabs the reader. It is full of courtroom drama and there is plenty of “who dunnit” in there as well. Grace is a perfect character. She has a checkered past but is trying to get her life back in order. She is very smart and has a mix of sarcasm and sass, which makes her fun to watch and listen too.

Grace has some great helpers in life and along her journey. Vinnie is the best guy and helper of Grace. Jake add some comic relief…then there is Manny..I was expecting(wishing) more from him for Grace but its not meant to be.

Overall this is a top notch crime story. Grace is entertaining which makes the story move along quickly. Hopefully there are more of Grace’s stories coming from this author.
