The Mermaid and the Ice Cube Necklace (Mermaid Science) by Lois Wickstrom – Review by Moriah Venable

Mermaid and the Ice Cube NecklaceMermaid and the Ice Cube Necklace by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

During a picnic, Maia the Mermaid makes an ice cube necklace for Trezzie.

When Fig almost drowns in the water, the ice on the necklace becomes bigger and helps Fig stay above the water, being used as a life preserver.

Reading this made me feel like I was back in 5th grade science class. Learning about the phases of water. Now only did I enjoy the pictures but it was great to learn about water and how it freezes.

I think I am starting to get into middle grade books again after so many years of not reading them.

So many great things to say about this book! The illustrations are beautiful and very colorful, first and foremost. They will capture the eye and grab the reader’s attention! I love the story too! Maia and Fig are having a picnic and Maia is showing Fig how to make an ice cube necklace. Fig has a lot of questions about the ice cubes….why are they getting smaller…how do they float on water…how to blow the hole to add the string. Then, Fig falls into the water and the necklace is thrown to her to help her to safety. I love how the author intertwines science with safety in this cute little book! The last page goes into more scientific depth about ice and water. There are elements in this book that will appeal to all young learners!

Science is all around you.

The Mermaid and the Ice Cube, Mermaid Science, by Lois Wickstrom, is part of an interesting series of books that help the readers see that science is all around them, not just in a classroom. Kids of all ages will get excited about learning science from everyday objects. The illustrations are beautifully rendered, with fun colors and scenes. This is a fast read that can lead to a fun learning experience by talking about and recreating things the characters did in the book.
Maia and Fig are having a picnic when Trezzie, the mermaid, shows up. Trezzie loves the way the ice cubes sparkle and asks them to make her a necklace out of them. As they do they talk about all kinds of things about ice, water, and how it changes forms and melts. When Maia gives Trezzie the necklace, Fig (who can’t see Trezzie because she doesn’t believe in mermaids) sees the necklace floating in the water and decides to jump in after it. As she’s swimming for the necklace she has a leg cramp, will the mermaid she can’t see save her?
I found this to be a great way to open up a discussion on water safety with the readers. The author has not only brought science to everyday life, but the need to believe in things, and also how it’s important to be safe and think before you act. I think parents, teachers, and kids alike will love this book and learn from it. The last page goes into more scientific details about water and all its forms, so even adults or older children can learn or refresh their knowledge.

The thing I loved most about this book is the realistic dialogue. It’s the kind of dialogue I can relate to. I liked that it was straightforward and not full of fluff wording! Read as a standalone, it was easy to get into, realistic, and steamy!

Everyone has known a guy like Levi, and it is nice to see him challenged by someone. Kindle is a good character and the author builds their tension very nicely. I enjoyed their time together and was satisfied with the ending. The jealous interlude serves as a tangle to the ultimate goal, which I understand as a method, but I am glad it didn’t last longer than it did!

I would definitely try other book series by this author!

Squid (Moto X Book 5)Squid by Brooke May
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this contemporary romance which is book five in the ‘Motto X’ series, but it can be read as a standalone story. Levi Crowe is best known for being a good time, party boy, with plenty of money and a body that women drool over. His weekend ‘black outs’ are legendary and provide a good laugh to everyone, but him. Underneath, Levi is worn out and unhappy, but it’s not until the same women, the one he can’t get out of his head, continuously rejects him, that suddenly Levi wants his life to change. Levi manages to get his life back on track, and is happier, but then, the women who rejected him, Kindle James, comes into his life. When both their careers are at stake Levi has to prove himself, but not only to Kindle. Can he really be a functioning adult though, especially when he attracts the attention of a stalker. This fairly quick read is full of great characters, and a storyline which kept me happily turning the pages. An enjoyable and engaging read, and I’m now keen to read the previous books in this series.

This book is a well written, action packed story that will definitely keep you turning the pages to find out what is going to happen. The book is full of suspense and intrigue and really does capture your attention. The characters are strong and interesting to read about.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and, although I would have preferred to read the books in order, it did not affect the story that this was the second in the series. I enjoyed the style of writing adopted by the author and thought she did a great job. I will definitely look at more of her work in the future.

This is the first of a wonderful and expressive young adult series. We are met with Chloe who is the local apothecary for her small town. And she runs into many of the towns people having scurpus. At the same time a Fae man named Quintus. Who tells her that her sister is in need of her help.

Problem is the sister is in Faerie. And Faerie is under attack, This world building is amazing and you can feel the touches of magic that are beaming around every page turn.

Plus if you like an enemies to lovers story, look no further. I cannot wait to see where this story progresses to. I love Chloe and her personality and can feel her struggles. I just cannot wait. I am so excited for the next.

This was my first book from this author and I am already running to not only pre-order the second book, but also ordering her other series! This adventure is THAT good.

Chloe is enjoying her mortal life as her town’s apothecary, but people are getting sicker than usual. Quintus, a fae from Chloe’s past, shows up requesting help. Faerie is being overthrown by mortals and Chloe can help stop it, but will she? She vowed never to return but her sister’s life hangs in the balance.

I devoured this book in a day and am impatiently waiting for the second one! I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a fast-paced thrilling Fae escapade.

Flame and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns Book 1) by Kay L. Moody – Review by Janel Bernotas

Wow! What a fantastic and magical novel! I’m partial to tales of the fae and other magical beings. Flame and Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns Book 1) by Kay L Moody absolutely kept me enthralled and turning pages long into the night. The writing style is so descriptive that you can visualize every scene, character, and smallest little detail in your mind. It makes you feel like you’re actually there watching the tale unfold in front of you. The characters like Chloe, Quintus, Grace, and Elora are written so descriptively and “real” that you feel like you’ve known them for ages. I loved every bit of this book, and cheered Chloe on as she fought to save Faerie from the mortals. I give this novel 5 stars. To me, it is like reading some Harry Potter and J.R.R. Tolkien wrapped up in one. I look forward to reading more of Kay L. Moody’s work.

Chloe, who once resided in the land of Fae, has found her place in the mortal realm. She is an apothecary and is respected by those mortals whom she helps. Alas, the last few patients of hers she has not been able to cure. What is causing this malady? Unfortunately, it does not come from the mortal realm but rather that of Fae. What can she do to help the mortals and even her own family against this horrid illness? Why naturally she must revisit Fae and help those in that realm against Iron. If she can help the fairies to take back their castle and land, then maybe she has a chance to save those she loves.
Such a great fantasy novel. It is hard not to fall in love with Chloe and to want her to succeed. We follow her through many problems and challenges and difficult decisions. The characters are so well written, and the storyline is written at a pace such that I did not want to put the book down. I love the fact that the book is based in two different worlds that are attached by many things. What happens in Fae has it effects on the mortal realm. You can’t help but to root for Chloe and want her to succeed. Pick up the book and read it. You will not be disappointed. In fact, my 13 year-old- granddaughter thought the book was beautiful and cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

This was a great 5 star read. This was my first time reading this author and I can’t wait to read more from her. I was pulled right in and on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen. Sera was a very strong female with some deadly training under her belt as an assassin. She ends up getting a new assignment involving Cassius. Problem is that the chemistry between them is off the charts. Will she be able to go through with her assignment?

Overall I really enjoyed this book. We get suspense, mystery, action and so much more. I loved the bantering. All of the characters added a great element to the story. I look forward to reading more from this author. If you’re looking for a great read 1-click and get started today.

This is the first time I have ever read something from this author and he did not disappoint!

This book is perfect for any murder mystery lover, it is has suspense, mystery and twist and turns that I did not see coming, definitely a page turner I finished this book at 3 am.

Nora’s journey throughout this book was a roller coaster, at first she thinks she is coming to a beautiful island, will be an easier job, she can relax and take it easy for awhile. Little did she know she would be become a pawn to the kidnappers plan, and will she survive?

Deadly Sommer (Nora Sommer #1)Deadly Sommer by Nicholas Harvey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Deadly Sommer is the first book in the Nora Sommer Caribbean Suspense series. I hope the author makes a prequel, because there is a lot of reference to Nora’s past and how/why she joined the police force. This is the first book I have read by this author but I am hooked. It was so well written, and the characters were wonderful. He even wrote the locals’ speech in the broken English you would find in the Cayman Islands. This book was filled with suspense, and kept me on the edge of my seat. It slowly unraveled, but kept us guessing what would come next. Nora is an amazing character, despite being young and a rookie cop, she is very resourceful and passionate. I cant wait to read the next book in the series.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A suspenseful thriller where the reader is just as out of the loop as the characters continue to develop. This Multiple POV style mystery followed Nora, a Norwegian runaway turned Cayman police officer as she is thrown into a vicious battle between sides, and no one is safe. Physically and mentally tested to save the life of someone she’s never met, Nora battles against the odds where most humans would fail.

As she runs from a burdened past, Nora is a strong-willed fighter that has gone through hell and back just to be thrown into more turmoil. As she runs from the grief of a past love, Nora distracts herself as much as possible. The relation to not wanting to feel or acknowledge life after the loss of someone you loved is where sympathy plays a huge role in this literature. As she continues on to play puppet in the games where multi-millionaires are revealed to be more than what meets the eye, Nora faces some of her greatest fears.

An easy read with a twisting and compelling plot that leaves the reader on their toes and wanting more, the author does a fantastic job of drawing you in and taking you for a wild ride. Happily able to say that the remainder of the series and related books will be happily read in the near future.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Crime, the thrill of the chase, and a gripping mystery all wrapped into one book. There were so many moving pieces in this story that kept me captivated, more than just that of the usual ‘crime novel’. Sure, there’s the classic ‘bad guy’ and ‘good guy’ but not everything is quite so black and white. When we’re introduced into this life of Nora Sommer, we’re not sure what we’ve gotten into, but then the plot thickens as we discover more about the circumstances surrounding her first case. Even as she’s gone through her own trials before this, when Nora’s thrown into this crazy situation I really love seeing how she perseveres and fights to do what’s right. The pace was moderate, not too fast or too slow but really well-paced. Though I’ve never been the Cayman Islands, I liked how I was able to imagine the scenery clearly and felt as if I were in the story with the other characters.

Coyote's Road TripCoyote’s Road Trip by Laura Koerber
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A quick read that winds like a road. A very dystopian-style read that hints at Native American storytelling roots that takes the reader along like the shotgun rider in a vehicle. The attention to detail is nice as we follow along with the movements and shifts of Coyote and all of the chaos that ensues with it all. A lovely example of neutral chaos with a classical tease that is neither good nor evil. Coyote is a loveable and respected character with a glint of mischief hiding in his eyes.
The writing style is very different but quickly appreciated, and overall an easy read. The wind and turns quickly hold the reader and the attention to detail, as well as the storyline, pull the reader in easily.

Book 6 in the Mafia Elite Series doesn’t disappoint. We have Trey the one who became a doctor to help his family and the other Chicago mafia families is ready for a change. The change brings him in contact with Hailey a socialite, who he’s met before during an event.

Hailey has family baggage due to the tragic death of her father & older sister in a car accident. Her mother is a wreck because of the loss and Hailey has to find her way through life without her mother’s support. This leads to some bad relationships with men. Can she trust Trey and work together to become a couple?

The author creates characters that are easy to connect with, I love the way the mafia couples interact with the new couple, and I can’t help but root for Trey and Hailey to find their way together. As always, I couldn’t put the book down because I was sucked into the story

5/5 Stars

Caging Grace (The Grace Series #1) by Carsen Lane

This is the first book I’ve read by the author. This book is a great read, but I’m not going to ruin who she gets with. Caging Grave is the first book in The Grace Series.

Grace has always fought since she was young. First in Underground Cage Fighting and then UFC. Underground because she needed to keep a roof over her family’s head. Now thanks to her gym owner she finds herself a new deal. The quote I chose for Grace is: “Why do I have a feeling that’s only the beginning? Trust is big with me, O’Malley. Once it’s gone, we’re done. Get me? I want full disclosure on everything.”

Johnny is Grace’s trainer after she becomes an ambassador for a clothing line which requires UFC. He has also had a rough childhood so he connects with Grace on a level no one else understands. The quote I chose for Johnny is: “You’ve already won, Grace. You’ve come face to face with your own demons, and you’ve come out on top. You’ve given yourself the right to hope, the chance to dream. Don’t allow fear to steal your dream from you. You’ve never let fear win before, so don’t start now.”

Dar is a Harvard graduate and working out at Grace’s gym. He catches Grace’s eye and figures out that he can do a whole lot better than he is now. The quote I chose for Dar is: “You were a child, Grace, and sadly those types of accidents happen in the ring. You have no penance to pay. Even if you did, don’t you think you’ve paid it by now?”

Highly recommended for Women’s Fiction lovers.
