What a fabulous story! I loved the characters, I laughed, and I cried with the characters. There is young love, with all the ups and downs that accompany teens on the cusp of adulthood. There is suspense, an evil stepmother, a pair of evil-in-training stepsisters, and a funeral home/ crematorium. Throw in a fairy godmother and a charming prince of pop- I can see where the series derives its name. I definitely can’t wait for more installments in this series.

A retelling of Cinderella and I LOVED it! The main character is Ashley Adams. After her dad passes away she is stuck with her stepmother, Veronica, and her stepsisters whom she refers to as the M and M’s. Veronica decided to open a funeral home where Ashley does the make up for the deceased and tried to keep to herself. She is an outcast at school except her one great friend Laura. Harry James is a pop star who caught his chemistry lab on fire and now has to attend regular school to finish his senior year. As he is running from a mob of girls he runs into Ashley and into the funeral home. They hit it off, but then school starts and there are many things that go wrong. The characters are so likable and I was rooting for them through the entire book. The setting is in Washington, my home state, so I always love that connection! There are twists and turns and it is a total page turner. I can’t wait for the next book to come out!

I am obsessed with fairy tales being retold. In all sorts of ways. Cinderella I feel is one that has been done in the cinematic world over and over again, as well as the literary world, but I can’t say I feel it’s been overdone. I especially loved this one, and the authors way of weaving the tale to add in some aspects that make the reader hold their breathe, think they know what’s coming, and end up being turned around over and over again. I felt like I was really able to connect to the characters, especially some off the original path character that I won’t spoil for you!
Overall, immaculately woven world development, character building and suspense, and of course, the beautiful romance and the many kinship’s shared too. I very much look forward to reading more of these Modern Day Fairy Tales by this author, and imagine most would feel the same. Highly recommend!

Set on finishing high school, Ashley does not have time for the famous musician enrolling in her school. All Ashley does have time for is school, working at the family mortuary and avoiding her stepmother and stepsisters. That all changes when he runs into her, literally. Harry did the crime and now has to pay the time by attending a brick and mortar school for the next six months. He expects it to be rough with the expectations his publicist has put forth. When he runs into Ashley, the time doesn’t look so bad. Opinion This modern day fairy tale is charming. Obviously set off of Cinderella, Ashley needs to learn to stand up for herself. The prince, aka Harry, needs the same. While reading it, I was entranced by the update to a classic. This book will appeal to teenagers and adults alike.

I’ll admit, when this book first crossed my path, I dismissed it as just another retelling of the same story that I’ve heard for years. Boy, was I wrong! Yes, this is a retelling of the Cinderella story but with some very interesting and exciting twists and turns!!
Merilee has been in training for over 70 years. It’s going to take her 100 to really get the hang of things. When the Queen Godmother announces an opportunity, Merilee is excited to take it on. Then the ground rules are laid….can Merilee carry out her task without breaking the rules??
Ashley is over love. Her dad is dead and everyone at school hates her. She’s a freak because she lives and works in a funeral home. Her life is in turmoil living with her step-mother Veronica and her step sisters, the M&Ms. School is all abuzz one day when the principal announces that they will have a celebrity in their midst. Everyone needed to treat Harry as a “normal” person and not be grabbing his clothes or trying to get his autograph, or even worse, a date. Ashley has no cares about this said celebrity and just wants to go on with her life.
Harry is running for his life. He’s tired of constantly being told who to hang around with, how to act, etc. It’s when he gets in trouble for setting a fire in a school that he and his friend are sentenced to a small town high school to serve out their probation. What’s six months in a drab, boring ole small town high school versus prison time?
I devoured this book in a mere few hours. It was a very fun read and the ending has me really looking forward to the next book in this series. Not at all what I expected but I am very happy that I gave this book the chance that it deserves!!

Great fairytale retelling of Cinderella! Very modern but with keeping the same concepts of the original Cinderella we all love and know. This modern fairytale is focused around four main characters, Ashley, Lauren, George and Harry. Ashley’s dad recently passed away and she is left in the care of her evil stepmother Veronica, and her two stepsisters, the M & M’s. Harry is a big-time pop star and has fallen into some small criminal trouble with his best friend George, this lands them in the same new school as Ashley and Lauren. Ashley has COMPLETELY blocked off any type of love or affection, that includes even friendships, that is until she meets the other new girl, Lauren. It is up to the fairy, Merilee, to save Ashley and help her find her true love as well as love for herself. There are a lot of twists in turns in this book, but it is such a great and easy read for a large range of ages. There is SLIGHT mention of drugs and attempted murder, but they do not go into any detail whatsoever. I absolutely ADORE that the main male characters, both Harry and George, have great character development and are not the typical prince charming where absolutely nothing is wrong with them, and they seem perfect. Every character in this book grows tremendously and I love how the author depicted their growth through their experiences. It definitely is a feel good, down to earth, but modern fairytale. I cannot wait to read the sequel “Red” which follows their life after high school graduation.

Were you less than thrilled with Neon Gods or Electric Idol? Are you too old for My Sister the Vampire or Monster High but still looking for a fun read where the clique is seen for who/what it truly is? Do you miss being able to watch Shrek and not feel like you should be analyzing it for your PopLit or Global Studies class?
MK Harkins delivers with this debut YA fairy tale. Even if you’re a former high school teacher or mom of a kid who’s trying to figure out who she is after her dad has passed away, you’ll feel a connection with Ashley.
Those connections are even stronger if you’re a teen facing hideous high school popularity issues while working and preparing for college while dealing with a family situation that amounts to the absolute worst of foster-care complete with court-ordered therapists and more road-blocks than the PCH during construction season.
I’m not saying you should throw cinderblocks at your stepmom when she commands you to schlep them around before school; but if you know why that would feel good this book might be a boost. Especially if your mandatory therapist disagrees with your coping skills or your after-school job includes being a cosmetologist at a mortuary.
In a world where good & evil aren’t always clear and social media has obscured magic, this book is a nice glimmer of hope.

Entertaining, Interesting, Heartbreaking Romance! In this modern day rewrite of the Cinderella tale the author takes us through the adventures Ashley has in outwitting her evil stepmother and step sisters. I enjoyed the twists in the plot and the strong character development. All in all this was a good book and is very clean so it is great for fairy tale lovers of all ages.

This book is a modern day retelling of Cinderella! We start in a court of fairies discussing a love life that must be fixed! And then we are immediately met with Ashley. She lives with her terrible stepmother and step sisters in a local mortuary.
Ashley is struggling through friendships in highschool with her best friend Laura. They hear of a pop star and his friend serving out some community service in their school. Although Laura is excited for it. Ashley not so much. How great can Harry and George be anyways?!
This was a wonderful young adult read and it was a super adorable time! And the end?!? You just gotta pick this up

This book is a modern take on Cinderella, and wonderfully done in my opinion. With out giving away to much Ashes, is about a young girl named Ashley(ironically enough) who if forced into serving her wicked step mom and step sisters and work in her stepmothers recently acquired mortuary after her fathers recent death. Harry is a handsome and troublesome bad boy musician who is being forced to attend her school after getting into some legal trouble and this is where their worlds collide. It is a classic, she doesn’t want anything to do with him, and he wants no one’s attention but hers, which she obviously won’t give to him, everyone is fighting to keep them apart troupe.
Ashley is strong independent and snarky and hilarious trying to navigate losing her father who was her world, and Harry is a bad boy rockstar, who may have a strong exterior but inside he’s fighting his own battles.
All and all very well written, I always find quick witty banter between characters to be refreshing, it helps for me to fall in love with them. The author did a wonderful job in bringing just enough information about each character (including the side characters AND villains) to build the story but not make it feel like an overload of unneeded information. I believe this book can be read as a standalone but I’m hoping for more in this series, for me it was a quick read but that’s because once I started, I couldn’t stop. So if you’re looking for a good, YA, Cinderella, modern day retelling give this book a read, you won’t be disappointed.

This fairy tale retelling was seriously so good! I really enjoyed it and was surprised at how easy to read and relate to the story it was based off of. While it says YA it really was a good book for any romance fairy tale lover! Well written and had me wanting more and more! This author is another new one for me and she was definitely added to my list of favourites! She has a true gift! Ashley was just someone you couldn’t help but love and root for! Definitely worth every minute of the read!!

I love all things fairy tale retellings and this one was no exception. The characters were well developed and the situations were relevant to today’s society and what kids have to deal with. This is a great beach read that once you start you find you may finish it in one setting.
Ashley is the high school pariah, a social outcast that works with dead bodies to boot. A constant target for the popular crowd Ashley has but one best friend that seems like fate brought them together and maybe that’s not so far from the truth. Life is going to plan, avoiding her evil step mother and step sisters, to finish school and finally be free of them all with a little boost from her dad. Then enters Harry James, mega celebrity, who has been ordered back to high school after a few very bad decisions landed him in front of a less than sympathetic judge. Now all the girls are chasing him except the one that interests him the most. With all the forces working against them can Harry and Ashley ever make it to their happily ever after?
In this modern day Cinderella retelling, Harry and Ashley must fight against all the forces that are pulling them apart. With a little bit of meddling behind the scenes can they overcome not just the evil step mother and her nefarious plans but also a controlling publicist and popular girl determined to find her own fame. This is a very fast read but there is action from the very first page. I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to see what happens next for the other characters!

In this different telling of Cinderella. You meet Harry and Ashley. A pop star and a high schooler stuck in Ashley’s house where it is a mortuary. Trying to hide from screaming fans Harry drops into the mortuary, and meets Ashley the social outcast. Ashley who cares not what others think of her, is not too thrilled to meet Harry. He turns her world upside down, and puts her into the spotlight. Meeting roadblocks at every turn Ashley struggles with her growing feeling for Harry. This story was written very well, and was very cute. I’ll be reading this to my daughter when she gets a little bit older!

This was a great read – I really enjoyed it. It was easy to read and I read it fairly quickly. The pace and flow of the story was good and I liked the characters, the author did a great job of making them relatable and I found I connected with them easily. From the synopsis it was clear this is modern day retelling of a fairy tale and we all know how they go so whilst yes the story may have been a little predictable it was still a beautiful read. Overall an enjoyable read and one that I would highly recommend – I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

This is the first book I have read from this author and she now has a new fan. I love a good teen romance but she exceeded all my expectations. This is the first book from the Modern Day Fairy Tale series. I was hooked from the first page and I could not put it down. I would love to see this on the big screen one day. I can’t wait to see what she is going to write next.

This was a truly captivating read! I really enjoyed this take on Cinderella. Reading different interpretations of fairy tales is always fun, seeing how the author decides to change it up or make it more modern. From the prologue to the epilogue, Ashley’s story is one that we’ve read or seen more than once, in various retellings of Cinderella, but it is by no means the exact same. The bones of the story were recognizable, but the rest of the body of the story was truly unique and beautiful. Ashley and Harry’s relationship was tested for sure, but isn’t everyone’s? If you enjoy reading modern fairy tales, this is definitely a must read!

This was a nice easy read for me as I get ready for the upcoming school year! I love the modern-day retelling of fairy tales and this did not disappoint me in the slightest! This book reminds me a lot of the Cinderella Story movies from my childhood, particularly the first one with Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray.
I love the character of Ashley, I particularly admire how strong she stays despite all of the issues she faces in her life. The character of Harry was different from other ‘Prince Charming’ characters I have read in the past, dealing with plenty of his own issues and I loved reading the chapters in his point of view.
I also love how the side characters and villains were written, each character given a good amount of detail into their lives. I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with in the next book in the series!

Overall I liked this book. I really liked the story idea of twisting a classic fairytale. I was drawn to this book because I love twisted fairytales and the cover is beautiful. Parts of it were a little awkward, but I would definitely read more by this author, especially if they were more twisted fairytales!

Ashes was cute! Another twist on “Cinderella.” I’ve read this author before and I like what is done with the fairytale we are used to. The spin the author puts on it. I encourage everyone to check this author out. Now for a little back story. Ashley, your girl next-door type. Unfortunately she has an evil stepmother and two evil stepsisters. Still a minor and left in her stepmother’s care whe. Her father passed, Ashley is just trying to get through her senior year. This way she gets her trust, leaves for college, and never has to return to the wretched funeral home run by her stepmother. Seems easy, right? Not so fast because stepmonster Veronica wants to get her hands on Ashley’s trust. Only for her to be successful at that is sabotage. Harry, a fallen rockstar, who has been banished by the courts to finish high school in a secluded Washington State town to make up for crimes past. Never did he expect to meet the one person who would turn his life upside down. Ashley is a breath of fresh air, unfortunately nobody wants them together. It’s even been as far as to be court ordered as a stipulation of his probation. Will Ashley and Harry survive? Does Veronica succeed? Like I said early on, this author does a nice job of putting twists on the everyday fairytale. This book as well as the others written are highly recommended!

This was the first book I have read by this author and I truly enjoyed it. A modern twist on a classic that we all know and love.

This is definitely one of the better retelling of Cinderella that I have read. I was hesitant to give it a go at first but I am glad I did. The characters were brilliant, they really made the book for me. Their connection was instant and believable. I loved watching the connection grow as the story developed. I thought the book was well written. Easy to read but caught my attention. This is a great story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

The synopsis attracted me to this book, but then I was absolutely hooked from the prologue! There was the perfect amount of magic and reality sprinkled into this story, and I absolutely loved the characters. Ashley has such spunk and personality! I wish I had been more like her when I was in high school. This retelling of Cinderella was such an easy read and had enough twists and turns to keep me captivated with the story. I definitely recommend this book and am now going to read more from MK Harkins!

This was a good 4 star read. This was a fun spin on Cinderella. Veronica has to deal with bullies at school and she only has one friend. Things get interesting when a pop star is forced to attend her school Unexpectedly Veronica ends up helping Harry and the sparks fly from there. How will their story end?
Overall this was a good read. I enjoyed all of the characters. There are twists and turns that make you wonder just how things will turn out. If you’re looking for a modern day twist on Cinderella you will enjoy this book. I look forward to reading more from this series and author. 1-click and get started today.

I cannot tell you the last time I read a book that hooked me from the very first page. Ashes is one of those books. The books that you don’t want to put down from the very first word you read. I have to admit, I loved beyond belief the playlist that starts out this book. Before I could continue reading, I had to go play every one of the songs listed to get the vibe that the author was trying to portray. Then I picked the book back up and proceeded to read it in one setting. This book is a fairy tale complete with fairy godmothers, evil step mothers and wicked step sisters. It also has an orphan who has walled her heart off from anyone and everyone from getting close to her ever since her dad died. Oh and to top it off Ashley (our main character) is a social outcast because you know working and living in a funeral home will do that to you. But when a pop star crosses her path, she just might consider letting her guard down. Except, those step sisters I mentioned are planning on dating him and Ashley has been explicitly told to stay out of his way. But with a little help from a fairy godmother things just might be turning around for Ashley.

Ashes (Modern-Day Fairy Tale Book 1) by MK Harkins. I loved this light hearted retelling of Cinderella. Its the story of Ashley Adams who is being tormented at school by bullies and at home by her step mom and step sisters. Enter Harry James the worlds most famous young pop star and things begin to look up. Harry is having to go to public school because he got in some trouble and his punishment is to attend a normal school. To get rid of bad press and save his popularity with the fans. Ashley intends to keep a low profile because she has given up on love and pretty much life so when Harry runs into her trying to get away from fans she is shocked she actually likes him. As Ashley and Harry spend more and more time together feelings grow deep and when its time for Harry to leave her school and go back to his real life will he break Ashley’s heart again? This is a great modern version of Cinderella.

This modern day fairy tale retelling really had it all. Based off of Cinderella this novel was so good I couldn’t put it down, however I am a sucker for fairy tale retellings. This book was full of great characters , magic, romance and so much more that I couldn’t help but give it five stars. This is my first novel by this author but based on the wonderful story, the beautiful cover and so much more I will definitely be looking for the next novel on this series.

Ashes is a wonderfully written Modern day retelling of the classic Cinderella with a few a twists and I absolutely loved reading it. This is a fast paced story that once you start reading its hard to put down until you’ve finished. The characters are relatable and fully developed and the storyline flowed. This is Ashley and Harry’s story. She just wants to finish school and hopefully find away to get away from her step-mother and step sisters and the funeral home they run. Harry is a pop star who has been ordered by the courts to finish out his senior year at public school. These have quite the chemistry but man the twists and turns and add in a few obstacles. Can these two find there happily ever after? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I can’t wait to read more from this Author and this series.

This was a great, modern retelling of the Cinderella story. It is a young adult romance with a sprinkle of fantasy and magic as well. The author does an amazing job of filling the story with so many twists and turns that it keeps the reader guessing every step of the way but the link to the Cinderella story of meeting “a prince” and leaving behind the “wicked stepmother and stepsisters” is all there. Even though there is an element of a fairy tale in this book the story is also set and is relatable to modern day and modern life for young adults. From the romance between our 2 main characters to the group of girl Bullies that want to make Ashley’s life miserable at school just like she is at home. This is a great story and one I really enjoyed.
