Interesting and wonderful, short, young adult book. I really felt for both Corisande and Noah. Both had rich lives with friends, and families that cared for them, but they were both lonely. Lonely until they found each other. Corisande is a special type of siren, although her siren song is supposed to lure sailors to their death, she doesn’t want anyone to die, so when Noah gets hurt, she is devastated. I appreciate her wanting to confess everything to Noah, but I can tell she is falling for him and doesn’t want to lose what she is building with him. Noah’s mom is a hinderance but I understand her need to keep her son safe after what happened to her husband. The story is short and sweet, Noah and Corisande are super cute together and I was nervous about their fight Aphrodite, but excited to see how everything turned out in the end.

The School of Nine is the first book in The Mythic Academy Collection series by Amanda Marin. This is a captivating YA fantasy with a magical academy/finishing school setting, Muses, sinister foes, drama, danger, high stakes, agendas, prophecy, legends/myths, good vs evil, family, duty/responsibility, friendship, journey of discovery, self-discovery, action, adventure, secrets, and a touch of sweet (clean) romance. This isn’t the first book that I have read by Ms. Marin, and having loved her previous books, I was excited to start on a new series from her. I loved the premise, the whole ‘Mystic Academy’ aspect had me hooked before I’d even read a word. But then the first few pages certainly ‘sealed the deal’ for me. Bianca Harper is a Muse who can trace her heritage back to one of the original nine Muses, and with that legacy comes the heavy weight of responsibility. She feels the weight of expectations on her shoulders – and she really isn’t sure she has what it takes to live up to those high expectations. She and her fellow classmates at Brightling Academy are learning everything a good Muse must know in order to ‘inspire’ all the artistic, musical, and creative ideas, which in turn then spreads goodwill and hope throughout all of humanity. But strange things have started happening, with an ancient prophecy coming to pass, and someone seems all too eager to speed those things along… And on top of that, Bianca and her friends discover that the well of creativity is running dry. Now they must find a way to help replenish the well, to stop the prophecy from completing, before it’s all too late. The very fate of humanity is riding on outcome. Add in a new male student- the first ‘male’ muse in decades, tension, suspense, dramatic developments, and a touch of romance- and the story takes a captivating turn. A Song of Salt and Secrets is the second book in The Mythic Academy Collection series by Amanda Marin. This is another enchanting YA fantasy with a magical academy setting, Sirens, curses, magic, drama, danger, high stakes, agendas, myths, a touch of sweet (clean) romance, friendship, a journey of discovery, action, adventure, secrets, an ancient goddess with a grudge, fun, fairytale vibes (Little Mermaid-type story), a touch of fate, and emotion. I loved the first book in the series, and the whole ‘Mystic Academy’ aspect – so there was never any question that I would be diving into this book as soon as it hit my Kindle. Even though this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a standalone if you wanted, as each instalment focuses on its own particular character/s- the common theme being the ‘Mystical Academy’- although different academies. Magwitch Academy is where Sirens have been going for generations to learn to control their ‘deadly’ curse. But what happens if a siren unintentionally causes a nautical accident- her ‘victim’ driving his boat onto the rocks where she had been singing her song? What happens if the ‘sailor’ just happens to be young, handsome, and lives not too far away from the academy? Well, Corisande finds herself in just such a predicament- she feels an immediate connection with her ‘victim’, as if their fates are intertwining… And while fate seems to have a plan for them, exactly what that plan is, Corisande isn’t so sure… though she’s beginning to suspect a very tragic ending. Being drawn to Noah adds an extra complexity to an already overly complicated situation. Throw in some mystery, grief, a meddling mother, a powerful curse, sinister intentions, rage, grief, history, and a very vengeful goddess- and this story became unputdownable! This is such a great little series- I’m very much looking forward to Book #3! Happy Reading…

This book was a great addition to the series and I was really excited to get back into it. For me, this book was even better than the first and I really enjoyed the story the author has created. I loved that this book was centered on a siren, which is again not a typical main character. It added a new element to a book that was well written and a great read from the start. The characters in this book were just as engaging as the previous and I wanted to know more about them too. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to what this author produces next.

This book is a well written and interesting fantasy story that is about a school for muses. This isn’t something I have seen as a subject matter for a book before so it caught my attention right from the start. For me, this book was all about the characters. I connected with them instantly and wanted to know more about them and their story. Overall, this is quite a short story and I think it would have definitely benefited from being a longer book. However, that did not detract from my enjoyment of the story and it definitely has me looking forward to book two. I cannot wait to see what is to come next.

3.5 stars With a unique and intriguing storyline, The School of Nine is a YA paranormal fantasy romance tale with clever world building. With characters that are interesting and well-developed you will fall in love with them. I really like the premise and the mythos of muses in training along with prophecies and the chosen one. The School of Nine is set in a magical world of Brightling Academy – a prestigious school for female Muses. So, when Sebastian turns up imagine everyone’s surprise but not everything is as it seems. Bianca has her reservations about this newcomer but there is more to him than she first thought. With tension, intrigue, frustration, drama, turmoil, danger, action, adventure, there is something for YA lovers of magic. Will Bianca be able to rely on help to stop the trouble before them? A Song of Salt and Secrets has a unique and intriguing storyline and clever world building. It is a standalone YA fantasy romance novella-length tale. With a lot of emotions frustration, fear, longing, love, suffering, suspense, action, adventure, and there are a lot of ups and downs. Corisande ties hard to keep a side of her hidden because if not she can destroy and that is not who she is. Being born as a siren is a curse but can’t help wanting to sing it is who she is, but it is that very thing that puts everything in peril. She lives her life on hopes and dreams. Will Noah be the one to save her from herself and himself along the way? A Song of Salt and Secrets has well-developed and interesting characters that are hard not to like and feel for. I really enjoyed the premise of this short, sweet read.

This was a really cool story. I loved how it was about Muses-in-training. There was a mystery to be solved. The urban and paranormal mixed into the writing quite nicely. I enjoyed the writing and the characters. I find that when you have characters who are deceitful, that tends to catch and keep my attention. It’s a wonderful short read with lots of drama and action. A quick, fast-paced read.
