Only the Pretty Ones (Angry Girl Crime Stories Book 1)Only the Pretty Ones by Karen M. Bryson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I absolutely love thrillers and mysteries. Throw in a touch of romance and I am hooked. This story had my attention from the very first page until the very last word and most certainly did not disappoint!

Karen has done a fantastic job of weaving this story together, given the content, that certainly delivers a story on the darker side of life. Karen’s natural writing style flows easily and leaves a mark on you as you follow the many twists, turns and ups and downs of this dark and suspenseful, crime, romantic thriller. This story certainly touches on some themes that many may find extremely difficult but Karen has done a wonderful job when addressing and incorporating these issues.

Maxie Ford’s sister, Ella, was standing right in front of her, now she is gone, missing. Maxie’s own fears from the past come rushing back and she fears that history is repeating itself all over again. Maxie fears for the worst and when the police don’t seem to care she knows she is in a race against time to find her. With the help of her best friend, Tyler, Maxie ends up enlisting the help of a well known local drug lord, ‘Mickey Finn’ Donovan. As Maxie works alongside this man she is drawn into a world she never knew existed. A world where only those on the seedier side of life can survive but only if you know how. Throughout the story you find yourself on the edge of the seat with your heart in your throat as they are thrown into situations that are definitely scary and nerve-wracking.

I found myself cheering for Maxie and her new found gang and getting the job done. Watching those get their comeuppance definitely made me feel vindicated for those wronged. I was not always able to see what was coming and what did come often left me with goosebumps. This is definitely not a lighthearted romance story but I found myself looking at the drug lord with new found appeal. I enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more by Karen and the Angry Girl Crime Stories series.
