If you’re playing hide and seek, Lynn’s default hiding place is always between the pages of a book.  Whether it’s a recent bestseller or the latest release from one of her favorite authors, or creating new stories of her own, Lynn’s world must include books to fall into, to be dragged under, to immerse herself in fantasies, romances, thrillers, ideas, or new ways of looking at and experiencing life.  Her writing reflects her wide-ranging interests, but you’ll find most of her books in the romantic suspense, mysteries and thrillers and historical romance genres, usually with a magical or supernatural thread woven through the tapestry of the stories. When she’s not reading or writing, Lynn spends time with family and friends, traveling around the country and the world, and whenever she can, at the beach, under an umbrella…reading a book, of course.

Maddie Nichols’ entire life had been a lie…a fabrication…an invention…and spent on the run from an unknown menace. She didn’t even know her real name. Or her parents’ real names. Or where she came from. Or what she was supposed to do now.
Run! The single warning was communicated through a stranger in a hoodie carrying the backpack he thrust into her arms before he disappeared down the Manhattan sidewalk. The same stranger who knew the code word between her and her mom so Maddie would know he was legit, seeing as Maddie had no way of reaching her parents for confirmation. She’d neither seen nor heard from them since they handed her a new set of aliases along with false ids and a ticket across the country to New York City when she was sixteen and told her she was on her own.
Maddie turned the single sheet of paper her mother’s note was written on over in her hand, looking for any clues as to her parents’ whereabouts.
Run! To where? What or who was she running from? Who was she supposed to run to?
Maddie realized she couldn’t just stand there bemoaning her lost dreams for a future she was just beginning to believe could be hers. She recognized giving into the burning anger and resentment, building, still building inside her against the two people who could give her the answers she needed, but who were, as always, conveniently absent when she needed them most, wasn’t going to get her anywhere she needed to be right now.
Maddie bent down to retrieve the backpack the stranger left, slid her arms through the straps and slung the weight of it onto her back. She wouldn’t find the answers she longed for, standing still or looking back. One thing she realized early in life, there was no such thing as a rear-view mirror.
West, she decided, as she set off in the direction of the nearest subway stop and began going over her options. Since New York was pretty much as far east as she could get and still remain in the United States.
Once the immediate danger was behind her, whatever that danger was, she was going to stop running. She needed to make a life for herself. Which meant she needed to find out the truth. She couldn’t build a meaningful life on the shifting sands of lies.
It was a start. Another new beginning, after a life built on them. But this time, Maddie was digging in. She was going to find her real name, her real life. Failing that, she was going to find someone who could.
Tag along for a wild ride of Maddie’s sometimes fun, sometimes fitful search for the truth about her past, and her efforts to carve out a life of her own. With the help of Maxwell Cole, the head of an international private security enterprise, Maddie digs deep into her childhood memories to try to unlock the past and free her from the menace stalking her.

Secrets, Lies and Betrayals (Protect and Honor Series) by Lynn Wood – Review by Micalah Weatherholtz

Secrets, Lies and Betrayals (Protect and Honor Series #1)Secrets, Lies and Betrayals by Lynn Wood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Secrets, Lies, and Betrayals by Lynn Wood is book 1 in The Protect and Honor Series. It’s also the first book I have read by this author. This is a political thriller, with some romance, a little drama, suspense, and intrigue. It’s definitely one of those books that grab you in the beginning and doesn’t let you go until the end. The characters are lifelike, believable, and could jump right off the page. I also really liked how we were able to see the story from different point of views which helps to immerse your self in the story and see it as a whole which I’ve always really enjoyed. I’m looking forward to book 2.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The synopsis of the book piqued my interest even though I typically do not read books with politics as a major part of the story. I was happily surprised to find that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to pick up the next in the series.

This book follows our main character Lea living her second, fake life. Her original life she was Michaela Manning. As a young child that survived the assassination of her grandfather she was put into a new life to protect her. Living the quiet life away from the public is ruined when her father runs for office. Lea must now learn who she can trust as she goes on the run.

The characters in the story are fleshed out with depth that makes them relatable and real feeling. The author takes you on a twisty ride of surprise, suspense, and action with a dash of romance sprinkled in.

Secrets, Lies and Betrayals (Protect and Honor Series #1)Secrets, Lies and Betrayals by Lynn Wood
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A gripping contemporary romance with plenty of fast paced action, drama and suspense. All of which kept me hooked throughout. Michaela Manning is living her second, fake life under the watchful eyes of the ex-special forces operative who saved her life. At only three years old she became the victim of political violence along with her grandfather who was assassinated. Having grown up away from her family’s name and influence her father’s political ambitions now threaten Michaela’s new life. As his party’s presidential nominee her father is in the spotlight and the hunt for his long-lost daughter causes a media frenzy.
Everyone wants to know if his daughter is even still alive, but when someone she trusts reveals her secret, her two identities collide. With her life in danger from the extremists who killed her grandfather, Michaela is forced to go on the run with Max and back into hiding as they figure out who betrayed her. I was fully immersed in the storyline as the descriptive narrator brought both the characters and the settings vividly to life. I loved the likeable and relatable Michaela and felt both engaged with her and invested in her story. I enjoyed the political thriller/conspiracy elements of the storyline and the plot twists definitely kept me guessing. A must read!

Secrets, Lies and Betrayals (Protect and Honor Series #1)Secrets, Lies and Betrayals by Lynn Wood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first book in the Protect and Honour Series. This was a gripping read with twists and turns that I couldn’t see coming. It is set in a political arena which gives it a more realistic feel as you could actually imagine this sort of thing taking place. This is a story that gripped me from the first page and didn’t let go. the authors attention to details was great and really brought the characters to life.
When Michaela Manning grandfather was assassinated and she almost lost her life in the process she was taken into medical care by Maxwell Cole.
Now Michaela has grown up under a new identity of Lea and away from public eye to protect her. However now things are going to change.
With her father entering the political arena this has caused her new identity to be revealed and for the target to be placed on her back.
Maxwell is hired to protect her as she is thrust back into the spot light once again but can he protect her from all the dangers that could possible lurk out there?
How is Michaela going to react when her life goes from being her own and making her own choices to have to be under surveillance and protection all the time?
And who is responsible for leeking the information about Michaela’s identity? Can Maxwell figure out who is wanting to cause Michaela harm before they have chance to strike again.
With so many secrets and lies it keeps the reader constantly guessing who they can trust and who could be the person wanting to cause her harm. This is a thrilling political read which will keep you on the edge of your seat. I look forward to reading more in this series.

Secrets, Lies and Betrayals (Protect and Honor Series #1)Secrets, Lies and Betrayals by Lynn Wood
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the first book I have picked up by this author, and I was a little hesitant at first. I was not sure if I would be able to immerse myself in a political thriller; thriller, yes, politics, not so much. However, my fears did not last long and it took no time for me to become obsessed with getting to the end. Michaela, the Senator’s daughter, experiences a violent tragedy and is forced to lead a double life for her protection. Suddenly, it all starts to fall apart and it is a thrilling, breath-holding ride as she runs from extremists who killed her grandfather. Guarded by the man who saved her before, she must hit the ground running to figure out who let the secret of her double identity slip. This is definitely a page-turner, and I highly suggest starting it on a night before a day off because sleep will become less important! Loved it and can’t wait to get my hands on book number two.

Secrets, Lies and Betrayals (Protect and Honor Series #1)Secrets, Lies and Betrayals by Lynn Wood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It’s strange to start this book in the midst of the chaos our country is currently in. It seems to be hitting a little close to reality, but I digress. Secrets, Lies, and Betrayal is an interesting story about a girl’s existence after her grandfather was assassinated with her in his arms. The author puts together an intriguing story about her trials and tribulations as she maneuvers through life.
Lea is essentially hiding out in the open. Her identity has changed but she’s still attempting to live life. Living in different places throughout Europe till she finds what she wants. What she wants to do. What she wants out of life. First landed her in Paris, but not long into that journey she fell in love with Rome. A life worth living. A life that makes her happy. A man in her life that leaves her smiling. All of which is about to get derailed when her father announces he’s running for the Presidency.
Gabriel was going through life the best he knew how. As long as he didn’t make the same mistakes as his father he knew he was golden. He never expected to meet a girl who was going to turn his life upside down. Lea literally/figuratively crashed into his life. A chance meeting with a promise of more. Realizing they moved through some of the same social circles that got to know one another. He wants more.
She insists it’s only a fling?
He wants her to give them a chance.
All the while dealing with the fall out of her father’s political persona.
What does it all mean for Lea? As well as Lea & Gabriel together?
The author keeps the reader wanting more. Keeping you turning the page. Making it a question to get that answers for this poor girl.

Let me start by saying, “Wow!” I did not know what I was getting myself into by reading Secrets, Lies, and Betrayals. Book 1 of the Protect and Honor Series by Lynn Wood is an amazing political thriller that I simply couldn’t put down. This book had me on the edge of my seat from the very first page. In light of the current political situation in the US, this book is chilling. There is so much going on in this book; suspense drama, danger, romance, secrets, and much, much more! Lynn Wood weaves an intricately chilling tale of conspiracy theories, political extremists, assassinations, and secret identities. The characters are all realistic and believable, although my modest lifestyle reeled at the thought of the many private jets, stunning homes and palaces, and security measures being utilized throughout the book. Michaela’s journey and growth throughout the book, despite the obstacles, heartbreak, and opposition intent on keeping her down, was truly inspirational. The story is so well-written and imaginative that I could picture myself at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, overlooking the ocean in California, or listening to the gentle waves in Cape Cod. This was my first time reading a book by Lynn Wood but it will certainly not be the last!

This is the first book in the Protect and Honor Series and the first book I’ve read by this author. I was pleasantly surprised to find one of the best romantic suspense stories I’ve found this year! I definitely lost a great amount of sleep because I couldn’t put this book down. I needed to know what happened at each stage and found myself staying up later and later. I really enjoy that this book was written from multiple points of view as it helps me get even further into the character’s mind. It feels like experiencing the book rather than just being on the outside looking in. There are plenty of emotions within these pages as well with engaging drama, tragedy, heartache, and mystery all woven throughout. I like to think I can figure out the plot to a story pretty quickly, but this one had me second-guessing myself with a rollercoaster of twists and turns. I am beyond excited to get my hands on the second book in the series. If you are looking for an intriguing romantic suspense, this should be your next read!

Michaela Manning barely survives a gunshot wound during her grandfather’s assassination. Hiding from her past at her father’s behest, she assumes a new identity. As an adult, she has created a new life away from the public eye. But when her father runs for president, her true identity enters out of the shadows. Grappling with the deaths of many family members, Michaela has to learn who she can trust, including herself. The storyline is amazing! My only issue is that the characters speak too formally, giving long speeches/monologues that do not fit their personalities. The story kept me on my toes and absolutely shocked me! I cannot wait for the next installment!

Secrets, Lies and Betrayals (Protect and Honor Series #1)Secrets, Lies and Betrayals by Lynn Wood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is a story of Lea Manning’s personal growth through life’s trials, including depression and grief. The rawness and realness of her pain really resonated through me and gave the book a depth that can be hard to achieve. Lea was born Michaela Manning. Her grandfather was killed, and her mother later passed away too. Then she was hidden away from the public eye for fear of her safety. At times, in the beginning, the threat to her life seemed a bit unbelievable but that smoothed out further in the story. For the most part, the story was clean without steamy parts or language, and I found that quite refreshing. There was only one section that contained language which made sense for the character. I enjoyed the mystery of the story as well as following Lea on her journey. She had to find herself as we all must and learn to stand on her own two feet. The one thing I didn’t like was towards the end, her speeches felt very preachy on hot button topics. It seemed unnecessary and took away from an otherwise enjoyable book. I like how everything was wrapped up in the end and all the loose ends were taken care of. I look forward to reading more by this author.

This author’s writing style is fluid and engaging, with vivid descriptions that bring the settings to life and enhance the tension-filled atmosphere. This action-packed thriller definitely keeps you on your toys and keeps you guessing on what’s going to happen next as secrets are unraveled and the characters face moral dilemmas. I Don’t usually partake in reading books with political themes. But I had to give it a try because I mean who doesn’t love a good conspiracy theory lol. Secrets, Lies and Betrayals (Protect and Honor Series #1)Secrets, Lies and Betrayals by Lynn Wood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Lea’s earliest memory is one of tragedy and it has shaped her whole life. As she navigates the world as anonymously as possible, she finds her passion but never a love that others seem to find. How can she when she lives a half-life? Her constant protector, who is more of a father than her biological one, with her maternal grandmother push her to look outside of herself and to live life. About the time she sees a glimmer of a possible future with an Italian Conte, she finds herself once more in the midst of tragedy. Can she take all the lessons that life has handed her over the years and put it to good use? Or will she be destined to be a shadow of the person she could have been if tragedy never touched her?

This book was not what I expected it to be. It follows Lea’s story loosely but catches the highlights of what really seem to shape her. I spent a lot of time thinking that I knew what was coming, only to be surprised it didn’t take the turn that I expected it to. There were also moments where I thought the story was wrapping up, only to be pleasantly surprised that it kept going. I found it interesting that someone so young and sheltered could speak so easily to thousands of people. While there are a lot of political points made, I did not find them divisive which is refreshing. All in all, it was a good read for the times that we are in.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Secrets, Lies and Betrayals was a pretty packed book. It was not at all what I expected- I don’t typically read the synopsis of books, I go off the title and cover art. This book started out intense, then fell into a bit of a romance story, then ended intense again. It all came together nicely, but I was having a hard time matching the cover to what was going on- then it all falls into place about 3/4 of the way through the book. I see this is going to be a series, which I am happy for. But I am a little thrown off that its a first boo, and a Maxwell Cole novel. While Max did play a vital role, he was not the main character. Secondarily, I hoped the author built on the Conte more- I thought, and kind of hoped, the story would go his direction and turn into a bit of a mafia type story. But, I did enjoy it. I want to know more about Charlie. As it seemed like there was a backstory there, on how Lea knew him. So while I enjoyed the book a lot, there was a lot of dots that I felt weren’t connecting for me. Perhaps the next book will tie those up.

What an amazing suspenseful romance “Secrets, Lies and Betrayals” was, it had me up late reading every night for the last few days it was that good! This was Lynn Wood’s first book I’ve ever read, and I must say I am a huge fan from the first page. Not only does the suspense start right from the beginning, but it has you sucked in with the shock of what happens to our main character, Lea (Michaela) at such a young age. What a realistic tragedy this story takes you through, from the hidden identity to the security detail, you will grow to feel such remorse as you follow Lea along her path to self-discovery and figuring out who she is. This book has a plot that just continually grows more and more intense, you’ll be questioning who you can trust and who may be out for their interests, not caring who may be hurt by the outcomes. I am so excited to read the next book in this series, coming out later this month. Max is such an amazing protector, he’s caring, and so amazing at his job, you will grow to love his character from the second you meet him as he works to protect and care for Lea throughout her life. Happy reading everyone!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This story is one of politics, violence and death, with a little bit of hope and love thrown in. Lea is the victim throughout the story however she doesn’t always play that way. She is trying to get on with her life with her new identity since her real life was stolen when she was 3 years old. For years Lea has been hiding but as she turns 18 and graduates, she discovers she needs to learn how to take care of herself, build a life and as Max tells her: “Gotta live, girl”.

This story takes many turns and when the world starts looking for lost little Michaela, Lea must go back into hiding, but will she ever be able to come out and live a normal life.

This story was a little slow to start as this trope isn’t my go-to. About a third of the way in I was hooked. Looking forward to reading more in this series and about these characters.

Secrets, Lies and Betrayals is Book 1 of the Protect and Honor Series and this is also a new author to me. I was already intrigued by the cover and the synopsis and definitely not disappointed. This story gave me everything I love about a book that grabs you right from the beginning of page one. Secrets, betrayal, danger, action and you wonder what is the truth….this is a great book and I highly recommend.

How much danger can you be in living behind a secret identity because you have to? Michaela, now Lea, knows all about this as she had no choice in the matter when she herself got in the crosshairs of a political assassination of her grandfather. With that, Maxwell Cole was there on that fateful day, saving Michaela when she was in grave danger. Years go by…then Lea’s father makes a fateful decision that impacts her as well…..this really causes turmoil and when secrets are discovered….Lea is the middle of the chaos. Will Maxwell Cole be able to protect her again when she needs him…..

This story had me at the edge of my seat!! Great story and looking forward to more of this series!

Holy Cow! I wasn’t even to the first chapter and was already wanting to clear my schedule because I knew this was worth a binge read.
I felt such a wide variety of emotions throughout this book. Pride, shock, devastation, heartbreak, comfort, relief, the entire array.
I truly felt connected to the character and was engrossed in the story. The desire for Lea to stay away from the media and politics, to live her own life and find her own way. The closeness that she felt with Max being the one person in her life to always protect her and help her however she should need. The joy and relationship she had with her grandmother.
I am anxiously awaiting the net book and look forward to getting to know Max better.

I was never quite into political thrillers until the last couple of years. I really enjoyed this one. The author went into the historical facts for this one. I was pulled in right from the beginning. As a grandparent, I will say that the beginning shocked me and gripped me. I had to keep reading to see what was going to happen. This thriller did not disappoint. The action and drama kept me going. I had my kindle app on whenever I had a chance. I would have read straight through if I could have put life on hold. The characters were well-written and I really felt that they could have been plucked right off the streets of our real world. This is a fascinating thriller, an amazing story and I can’t wait for book 2.

Secrets, Lies and Betrayals (Protect and Honor Series) by Lynn Wood – Review by Julie Johnson

Secrets, Lies and Betrayals (Protect and Honor Series Book 1)Secrets, Lies and Betrayals by Lynn Wood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is an introduction to a new-to-me author, as well as a new series. This is a romantic suspense featuring Lea Milan. Lea was once known as Michaela Manning but due to circumstances that put her in harm’s way, she’s had to change her name. A decades old murder is still haunting her and now that her dad is rising in power, it’s putting all that she’s worked to move past in danger.

This book has a little bit of everything. Mystery, suspense, romance, lies, betrayal, murder, political tones, and more. It’s a very intriguing book that will hook you pretty quickly.

I look forward to the next chapter in this story. I do hope that we will hear more from Max!
