Rebecca Remains (Shadow of a Doubt, #1)Rebecca Remains by Jessica Aiken-Hall
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

TRIGGER WARNING: Scenes of domestic violence and a somewhat graphic description of marital rape.

Tessa and Keith have been married for a year now. Keith is everything Tessa has ever wanted in a husband: attentive and protective. Even if she gave up her relationship w/ her last living relative – her sister – and her job to be Keith’s wife. Tessa and her sister have been estranged the entirety of Tessa’s marriage, b/c Emily did not like their eloping nor Keith’s over-protectiveness.
Tessa begins dreaming about a woman with long, red hair, warning her that Keith will hurt Tessa, just like he hurt her. It turns out that this woman really exists – existed? – because she is Rebecca, Keith’s former wife. Rebecca shows Tessa proof of the abuse she suffered and tells her that she was actually murdered – by Keith.
In Tessa’s non-dream life, she reaches out to Emily, to end their estrangement, and for help. Since we readers now know that Keith is an abuser, it makes sense that he gets upset at Tessa and Emily re-connecting. When Tessa begins suffering endless headaches and fatigue, Keith arranges for a doctor’s appointment; it turns out Tessa is pregnant. Her dreams of beginning a new family are coming true! Except – they are not. After finding proof that the dream woman was telling Tessa the truth – and the episode of marital rape by her supposedly-perfect husband – Emily and her girlfriend, Mandy, help Tessa move out.
Between the frightening dreams, and trying to establish a new life in which Keith cannot find her, Tessa and Emily try to solve Rebecca’s murder. Tessa needs peace and Rebecca deserves justice. Emily encourages Tessa to explore her gift – communicating with dead people, in order to accomplish both goals.
The story becomes progressively more suspenseful, as the reader awaits the probable confrontation with Keith What a plot twist awaits! Not only do we get the confrontation, but it is nothing like we expected, as we also learn the truth about the fates of Tessa’s and Emily’s parents! It certainly was NOT what they had been told.
There is very little exposition at the beginning of the novel: the plot becomes suspenseful immediately. A bit more exposition would have been helpful. Tessa makes unrealistic leaps in knowledge, seeming to understand situations well before she should have. It seems unrealistic for a woman being stalked by her husband to jump as quickly into a “new” relationship as Tessa does with her high school flame, Tommy. I was really sickened by the marital rape and abuse. Fortunately, the plot improved from there, becoming more about establishing a new family from friendships as opposed to more traditional family arrangements.
I rounded the book up to 3 stars. It is not my typical genre, and I will probably stick closer to paranormal cozy mysteries as opposed to more “realistic” suspenseful mysteries like this one.

This is the first book by this author that I have read, and I was hooked from the moment I started reading it. I found it to me a suspenseful book that I couldn’t put down. I was so wrapped up in all the secrets, lies and deception that was taking place I was sitting on pins and needles until the end. And to be quite honest, I was sweating when I reached the end from all the elements that I read. Great book and one that I highly recommend if you are into paranormal crime and mystery. I think she did a fabulous job describing everything and everyone in this book. In some areas, too much because I was a little frightened and looking over my shoulder in some places. Overall, a fabulous read and I look forward to reading other books by her as well.

This is a gripping read, full of suspense and intrigue. It’s a mystery with some paranormal elements and there were some intense moments. The tension and drama had me guessing all the way through, and I hadn’t guessed all the plot reveals by the end of the book. The plot was developed more than the character Tessa but I still enjoyed all the action and tension. A great read!

What an interesting read! It pulled me in and I didn’t come back up for air until the very last page. It was one of those stories that had me on the edge of my seat, eager to see what would happen next. The charcters are great in this one but I think I loved Tessa the most. She was awesome. The suspense and mystery are what what made this story a great one and I cannot wait to get my hands on more by this author.
I would definitely recommend this to a friend!

Rebecca Remains is an entertaining and enjoyable suspenseful, mystery story with a paranormal twist, all of which had me hooked from page one. When Tessa Stevens meets her husband Keith, she thinks that all the tragedies and loss which she has suffered is now in her past. However, through her dreams a visitor makes Tessa see that her husband is not who he pretends to be. When this visitor starts appearing in her home and with her sister also having suspicions about Keith, Tessa starts to investigate. She uncovers family secrets and deceptions along with a mystery surrounding a decade old murder. Tessa’s ‘gift’ also awakens and she can no longer ignore it and in fact has to embrace it if she is to discover the truth. This was a wonderfully written fast paced novel which had me gripped from start to finish. The plot twists and turns kept me guessing and the paranormal element added an additional layer to the story. Tessa is a likeable character and she makes a great main character. The authors descriptive narrative really bought both the characters and the setting to life making me feel fully immersed in the storyline. I found this novel to be an engaging read which I would definitely recommend.

This is not the first book I’ve read by Jessica Aiken-Hall. There’s good reason for that, she’s an amazing author. In this story our main character is Tessa. There are many supporting people in this book that are worth mentioning, but honestly just read it. It’s an original story about a woman (Tess) who’s married to Keith. She thinks this is the perfect life, until some things don’t start adding up. She reconnects with her sister Emily to try and figure out what’s off with her relationship.

Rebecca Remains was not what I was expecting it to be! It is the first book in the Shadow of Doubt series by Jessica Aiken-Hall. The first half of the book was really intense and action packed. I was on the edge of my seat and didn’t want to put it down. The second half was not nearly as exciting, and dragged a little. It went from a suspense thriller, to a romance/new friendship building, then ended as a thriller again. I wish the middle part had a little more suspense. I felt like Keith dropped off for too long, with how intense he was in the beginning. I do like the characters, and their friendships are well developed. The twist of WHO Rebecca is, is not what I was expecting. The next book in the series sounds exciting and I cannot wait for it to be released next month. Jessica’s books are always twisted and suspense filled, and this was no different. Recommend Rebecca Remains, and her other books.

Wow, Rebecca Remains is so good! As I began reading this book, I immediately had red flags about the main character’s husband, Keith. I found myself questioning everything he said and did even while Tessa was saying he was a perfect husband. I read more and more of the story and learned of Tessa’s life. I was drawn into the mystery and quite unable to put the book down. Parts of the story were so intense that I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the other shoe to drop. Boy, did it ever drop. The end was so unexpected and so surprising with a twist that I never saw coming. Jessica Aiken-Hall artfully wove into the story a lesson about finding yourself and believing in yourself while writing a fantastic story!

Rebecca Remains by Jessica Aiken Hall

Tessa is married and happy with her life. Well she was until her sister told her something. She then starts to notice that her husband may not be who she thinks.

Tessa is getting visits from the dead and it’s only one dead person. Rebecca. Keith’s dead wife. The quote I chose for Tessa is: “No, well, yes, but only in my dreams. The night before I saw you last, I had a dream where she was in all of our photos together, and then you showed me the stories online, and it was her. I had no idea who this woman was before, but she has been coming to me in dreams since I moved into Keith’s house.”

Highly recommended for Paranormal Crime lovers.

Hmm, this was an interesting story, got some serious ‘What Lies Beneath’ vibes from it, and of course ‘Rebecca’ vibes, but I have this curious feeling that it may have been on purpose. I could be wrong. Honestly though, on paper (I know it’s a book) it should be exactly the type of thing that I would adore. There’s mystery, there are twists and turns and a little sprinkle of the supernatural which has always been my thing, but for some reason, I found this a little difficult to get into. I don’t know whether it’s the way the character was written or whatever, but I just really struggle to immerse myself in this one. Not to say that this is badly written, or not worth the read because it is really good and I would absolutely recommend anyone giving it a go, I just found it a bit tough to get into, that’s all.
Tessa Stevens has had her fair share of crap to shovel in her life and when she meets her husband, she thinks that things are finally looking up and that she may actually get the life that she has always dreamed of free from all the darkness of her past. That is until a spirit keeps showing up warning her that all might not be as it seems. The more that the spirit visits her, the more that Tessa finds that Keith isn’t what she thought.
That’s a basic outline, I don’t want to ruin anything because I really do think you should read it, I think I’m going to read it again when I’ve had a bit of a break and I’m pretty sure that all the things I am not liking at the moment will have gone packing. I mean it had to be good because I finished it quickly. It kept me guessing and wanting to read more so it must have done something right. Just took me a bit of time to get into, but give it a go because you might not have the same problem and there is an awesome story in there.

Rebecca Remains is a gripping, edge of your seat read, by Jessica Aiken-Hall. And as I have come to expect from Ms. Aiken-Hall, this is quite an intriguing, thought-provoking, and very suspenseful crime/mystery- with paranormal elements, drama, danger, secrets, deception, and discovery- all wrapped up in a tightly woven and well-choreographed story. I was hooked from the moment I began, and Ms. Aiken-Hall had me guessing and trying to piece everything together to figure it all out before any big reveal.
We meet Tessa, whom after experiencing much tragedy in her life, had finally come to a point where things seemed to be looking bright again, when strange things begin to happen. Disturbing dreams other unsettling events occur to disrupt her life. Tessa gets to the point where she doesn’t know who to trust, or if anyone in her life is who she thinks they are. Her life is turned upside down and she has to dig to uncover the truth of the situation.
Ms. Aiken-Hall managed to instil palpable tension, suspense, and intensity into the story- giving it a real sense of impending danger and doom- which made for really great reading.

Wow! This book had me on the edge of my seat from the first chapter! Jessica Aiken-Hall starts by introducing us to our heroine Tessa, her husband Keith, and Tessa’s sister Emily, and starts to weave in all the ways in which Tessa might be in danger. When the ghost appears to her, Tessa is forced to question her marriage, her husband, and ultimately, everyone in her circle. Emily helps her to realize her unique gift, and she struggles to learn how to use it. As the mystery continued, I found myself increasingly wanting to shout at Tessa: “Don’t trust them! No, don’t go there! Watch out for this!”.

The authour is fantastic at creating intrigue and eliciting emotions in the reader. I was quite invested in the story, and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. It also became a more robust tale than I initially thought at the outset. There was more at stake than it seemed, as mysteries from the past wove together with the immediate dangers to Tessa.

Some of the heroine’s characteristics and insecurities made me groan; she has a different outlook on life and love than I believe most women have in the 21st century. I think though that part of her journey was having to examine some of these mindsets, and make an informed choice about what she wanted her life to look like going forward, and who she might move forward with. That is, if she can unravel the mystery fast enough, and survive whoever is plotting against her!

Tessa has a gift. She can see and communicate with spirits. When a persistent spirit trys to communicate with her it turns Tessa’s life upside down. No one who is she thinks they are. Things she knows are facts turn out to be lies. The man she loves and marries has a secret side.

Should she trust the spirit trying to communicate with her? Who and what can she trust in her life? Is Tessa’s life in danger if she doesn’t listen to the warnings?
