SPOOKED BY A SUSPICION by Risa Nyman – Review by Allyson Ware

Rocky. No, not the professional fighter. Rocky, the kid from Manhattan that figures out life is not as easy as it seems. When his mom brings up the idea of Ted, also known as Det, being in their lives forever, Rocky begins his detective work in his case against Ted. Rocky cannot fathom another man trying to steal the place of his father.

A truly moving novel, Nyman brings Rocky to life for many kids that go through the struggle of a new family member. Whether it is divorce, or in Rocky’s situation, his father passing and his mom finding a new boyfriend. I truly believe this novel could be life-changing for many children experiencing similar situations.

Spooked By a Suspicion by Risa Nyman is the second book in the series that follows the adventures of Rocky. I really enjoyed the first book and so I was only too happy to see what he gets up to in this latest instalment.
Rocky has been through quite a bit since we met him in the first book, he’s had to make quite a few major adjustments. But now his life is about to be up-ended once more when his mother announces that she will be getting married again. Rocky doesn’t like his prospective step-father and suspects that Ted is up to no good. When Rocky is setup for a crime he didn’t commit, he can’t help but feel that Ted is behind it all, and so Rocky sets out to investigate and prove himself innocent. What happens makes for a great read.
An children’s adventure story with mystery, suspense, drama, and emotion. The story is aimed at tweenage children (9 – 13), but can also be enjoyed by older readers too, like me.

Thank you, Risa Nyman!

~Rocky’s theory

About to transition from middle school to high school, Rocky is shocked when his mother announces her intention to marry Ted, a devious man with a devil’s beard, ominous eyebrows in constant motion, and black, beady eyes.

A series of strange accidents convince Rocky that Ted is using evil powers against him, and he is determined to stop the marriage. When Ted arranges to work at Rocky’s summer program, Rocky plots with his girlfriend Olive to expose Ted in an epic showdown.

Rocky’s plans are thwarted when he’s accused of stealing and suspects Ted is framing him. Scared no one will believe him, Rocky flees into the woods and encounters a hermit whose horrifying tale sends Rocky back to search for proof of his innocence.

Born in Boston with the accent to prove it, Risa Nyman lived within ten miles of that city for decades until a recent move to the neighboring Ocean State.

For many years, Risa worked for the League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization, dedicated to promoting active participation in our democracy, with a special focus on voting and elections.

Risa’s creative writing journey started when she found three pennies in a neat stack in an otherwise completely empty apartment that had belonged to her mother. It’s an interesting story, and there was definitely some magic in those pennies. Her debut middle grade novel, Swallowed by a Secret, was published by Immortal Works Press in January 2020.

When not writing, Risa is reading, exercising or doing therapeutic ironing (yes, there is such a thing.)
