Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery Book 3) by Winter Austin – Review by Emily H

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery, #3)Straight for the Kill by Winter Austin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

25 years ago Sheriff Elizabeth Benoit there was an unsolved mystery that was too close to home. Elizabeth’s best friend and her Deputies sister. Now there is another case that has links to the past cases, can Elizabeth figure it out in time or will it be too late.

Lila Dayne is doing her best to assist on the case. She wasn’t around when the initial death occurred, will she be able to give her take on the case no matter how difficult it maybe?

This is a really intriguing series. I like all the characters and the way the author cleverly drops little hints but as a reader you are not sure where the story is going. Elizabeth is a complex character who sets the tone for her deputies. I really enjoy the connection as detectives between Elizabeth and Lila, it really adds to the story.

This is the third book in a series, but I found that it could stand alone. I have yet to read the first two. The characters and plot certainly kept my attention. I finished it in one night, because I just didn’t want to put it down. There’s murder, suspense, mystery, and twists! I just thought I had it figured out.

The 3rd book in the Benoit and Dayne Mystery series. Can be read as a standalone, but you would be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t read the first 2. I read them out of order reading book 2 first, 1 second and this one 3rd.
One would think that you would need a notebook and create some kind of character map for all of the characters you are introduced to in this series, but Austin writes in such a way that you follow along with ease. The characters are actually a huge reason why I love this series, I’m attached and invested at this point. they have become my book besties.
The plot just like the two before keeps you guessing until the very end.

I honestly don’t know where to begin with this one. It had me hook, line, and sinker from the very beginning of the novel. Overall I rate it 4.5 stars – somewhere between I REALLY like this novel and I LOVE this novel. This is book three of the Benoit and Dayne Mystery series and I am pretty sure the only reason it wasn’t a ‘love’ was because I have never read the first two booked.

The writing in Straight for the Kill is amazing. It weaves the web of mystery surrounding the murder very well. I really enjoyed the character and character development. It did take me longer than a week to read it a little at a time due to having kiddos and a full time job, but I did not want to put it down ever. Every time I had to I thought about it often.

If you want an edge of your seat mystery – this book is for you. I couldn’t recommend it enough. From here, I am going to be going back to find book one and reading the series from the very beginning.

Wow! What a book. I don’t think it is over for Elizabeth and Lila. The whole thing had been going on for too long for it just to be over now. But I guess we will see in the next one.

Elizabeth Benoit, County Sheriff, is haunted by the deaths of her friends. When the anniversary is recognized by another young girl turning up dead in a similar fashion, Elizabeth must confront the ghosts of the past and the evils of the present. The only problem is that she is laid up because of recent emergency surgery and the lead detective has declared that half the sheriff’s department can’t be involved in the investigation due to close ties to the original victims.

Enter Lila Dayne. Recent transplant to the area and the Deputy Detective in charge of the case. As much as she needs to maintain the departmental distance from the current case, the players are too interwoven. Lila has to overcome her own demons to successfully solve this case. As Lila and Elizabeth race against the clock and unseen players to keep loved ones safe, the realization that those loved ones just might be the bad guys sets in. Will they lose everything and everyone as they work to put a stop to the evil haunting the county since they were kids?

Once you figure out all the players, the action and pace keeps you on the edge of your seat and pages turning. Kept secrets and promised threats keep these two finding twists and turns, never knowing who they can trust. Will finding the killer bring everything to a conclusion? We don’t know. So many questions were answered, some many secrets uncovered, but was everything and all the players?? Looking forward to the next installment to find out!! Great read!

This story is another classic Benoit and Dayne story. Like the second book, this one did not seem like a series to me. Which is no complaint, I like my books to be free of the need for them to be in order. She perfectly restated who everyone was but still gives bits to the past books. This storyline is my favorite out of all three she has made in the Benoit and Dayne line. The twists were successful in the suspense of this book. Will you find out the answer before someone else is hurt? Is the killer someone they know? You successfully find out in the reading of Straight For the Kill.

See the second book was amazing and pager turner. This last book was somewhat sad because of the fact that Elizabeth’s sister is missing and her best friend happens the same thing and still, Lila’s detective skills are at the tip of the point to know who the killer is. If only Elizabeth does not get in the way.

A complex and winding mystery that follows a third person POV. I read this as a stand alone but will be going back to read the first two in the series. It was an enjoyable read as we are taken back by the dead to a murder scene where three girls, each with different fate, had a story to tell.

A quick-witted read with plenty of suspense to keep you on your toes. Overall, a good read.

Sheriff Benoit and Deputy Dayne are back at it investigating another crime in the book, Straight for The Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery #3) by Winter Austin. This is another wonderful mystery, crime, and suspense story that will have readers at the edge of their seats. I could not put this book down, and to be honest I ended up reading all three of the Benoit and Dayne Mystery books over this past week. This book has kept me guessing and wondering, who did it? Will they find the killer before there is another victim?

Another great read with Elizabeth and Lila on the case. Book three in the series and still going strong. I enjoy these novels so much, they are written with such a perfect balance where there is never too much information or details but also never not enough. I always enjoy cozying up and getting lost in a mystery and this one was a doozy. Nothing beats a lady-duo on the hunt for answers and someone to nail to the wall with it. I lost myself to this book until I was done and felt like i could breathe again! Another great, exciting read!

While this is book 3 in the series it could definitely be read as a stand alone. However I will state that this whole series is incredible. The characters are simply amazing and the plot of this third installation had me hooked from the beginning. The cover is absolutely beautiful, and the authors plot development and character development are amazing. But the mystery behind a cold case involving our lead characters best friend being murdered will have you on the edge of your seat. When you pick up this book you better make sure you have enough time to read it, because trust me you won’t want to put it down.

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery Book 3) by Winter Austin. OMG. I loved this book and I think I may have a new favorite author! I have loved every book in this series and while I recommend reading them in order they can be read as stand alone books. This is the story of Elizabeth Benoit who is fairly new at being a Sheriff but not new at the Sheriff’s department. Deputy Lila Dayne is a deputy sheriff and she and the sheriff work well together. When a new murder happens and it brings back bad memories of a few cold cases they have Deputy Payne and Sheriff Benoit take notice. One of those cold cases was the murder of Sheriff Benoit’s best friend who is also the sister of one of Benoit’s Deputies. This new case is causing a lot of bad memories to come to light and the previous sheriff is tied to them all. Can Sheriff Benoit solve this case before more innocent people die and can she finally put away the old sheriff. Cleaning up the Sheriff’s department is her goal but if she can solve murders at the same time that’s even better. Be prepared to read this book in one sitting, its that good!

25 years ago a sinister murder took place that no one was able to solve and it seems someone has struck again.
Elizabeth Benoit just had an Appendectomy and is recovering at home on Halloween when everything goes wrong and a murder way too similar to another one in this town comes to light
The characters in this story are well built, the story is well developed and intriguing and keeps you reading and even though this is Book 3 I didn’t feel like I was missing too much by not having read the other 2 though now I will have to go qnd check then out.
Well done mystery Thriller. Happy reading!

A small rural community tries to withstand well-meaning outsiders. The well-meaning outsiders are uncovering corruption at the highest levels of the county government. Crimes from a quarter-century ago come full circle. It becomes a battle of vengeance versus justice, as both heroes and anti-heroes race against time. This is a fabulous stand-alone read, but readers will be thrilled to learn this is actually the third book in a series.

This has its crazy good moments and its not so good moments. I liked the idea of the story but the delivery left me with a lot of thoughts. I struggled to stay focused in the middle and actually keep reading after that. There are so many times I thought “what is wrong with these characters?” because they keep starting sentences telling someone information then just run away after the first few words. Does the Sheriff even know this town and its occupants? Why is a Deputy running the show and telling the higher ups what to do and how to act? Some of this one I understood but not her mean streak, secrets and just overall pushiness to her senior officers and others. The ending felt like the author was going for too much shock factor and trying to tie loose ends up that just don’t make sense. I did mention good moments and those were the beginning while trying to figure out the original murder. I thought this book is going to be good! The ending also brought action, suspense and drama that really picked the pace back up.

Overall this is an okay story. It held my interest for a bit but mostly I just wanted it to end. I have not read the other books in this series. Maybe that would have helped with some of the actions of the characters.

This is not my first book by this author but it has just become one of my favorites. I have enjoyed this author’s books from the first one I picked up. I enjoy how they are able to pull me into the story with their attention to details. They make the story realistic and entertaining. This book is no different. This is a well written story where a young female is killed in the same manner as a previous female. On top of that Elizabeth’s sister turns up missing. This is where the story picks up and takes off. The suspense and twists and turns are like no other. They had me turning pages fast just to see what would happen next. This is a fast paced story that is not only hard to put down but one you don’t want to miss. The characters are relatable and brought so much to the story. I really enjoyed this suspenseful mystery. I highly recommend this book.

Straight for the Kill (Benoit and Dayne Mystery, #3)Straight for the Kill by Winter Austin

A gripping and suspenseful crime thriller which kept me hooked from start to finish. Having read and enjoyed the previous books in this series, I am familiar with the main characters, Elizabeth Benoit and Lila Dayne. I was looking forward to reading about their next case, and I was not disappointed. When a young woman is killed in the same circumstances as a death from twenty five years earlier, it’s more than a case of Déjà vu for Sheriff Elizabeth Benoit. The previous victim was Elizabeth’s best friend and Deputy Kyle Lundquist’s older sister, and Elizabeth has never stopped trying to catch her killer. Elizabeth is convinced that the crooked ex-Sheriff was involved in the crime, but although she has a thick file on him she knows she needs irrefutable proof.
Due to the legal consequences of Elizabeth being too close to the case, Deputy Detective Lila Dayne takes charge. However, she can’t seem to pin down their main suspect despite using all her investigative skills. When prominent members of the community begin to disappear, Elizabeth is back on the case, but things turn personal when her sister then goes missing. Benoit and Dayne must catch the killer, and end up in a showdown that’s been brewing for decades in Eckardt County. The storyline had me turning the pages well into the night, and the plot twists kept me guessing as to the outcome of the story. The descriptive narrative brought both the setting and characters vividly to life, making me feel immersed in the story. This was a real page turner of a novel, and one which I recommend.

This is the first Mystery I have read in a long time and OMG I am so glad I did! I was totally hooked from the very first sentence right to the very last word. This is a totally captivating read filled with interesting characters and a fantastic storyline that will keep you hooked and on the edge of your seat the whole way. Elizabeth and Lila are such strong determined women who will let nothing stop them from getting to the truth! You will be on their side every step of the way. I found myself wanting to know more about some of the other characters as well, Rafe and Kyle for example, so I will definitely be finding the rest of the books in this series. This is the 3rd book of this series and I do think that it can be read as a standalone because I totally enjoyed it and followed along with no issue even though I had not read the previous books. I will however be going back and reading the previous books because of how much I truly enjoyed this one. This amazingly talented author definitely has a new fan in me! Straight for the Kill is book number 3 in the Benoit and Dayne Mystery series by Winter Austin. In this installment, Sheriff Benoit’s past comes back to haunt her when a body is found that shows strong similarities to previous murders. One previous murder was someone close to Benoit which motivates the sheriff even further. As more members of the community disappear, Deputy Dayne and Sheriff Benoit must use all of their abilities to find the killer. Then, Sheriff Benoit’s own sister goes missing. Can Benoit and Dayne find the killer in time to save Benoit’s sister, or does the killer get away? Find out in Straight for the Kill.
Just like the previous books, the characters are relatable with very realistic feelings. The reader can feel the emotions of the characters. This book is a gripping read full of twists and turns. I did not want to put the book down and it left me wanting more from Winter Austin.
The series just keeps getting better and better. Each book could be read as a standalone as Winter Austin does a fantastic job of ensuring the reader knows the important aspects in each backstory. It is a page turning, at the edge of your seat, police thriller. I highly suggest picking up a copy.

This is book 3 in a series. However, this could be read as a standalone. There will be bits and pieces that might be confusing so I do feel it best to read the books in order.

I read this book in just under 5 hours in one sitting. It’s gripping and will have it’s hooks in you from the start. Prepare accordingly with your favorite beveridge, a snack, and a blanket. You’re not going to want to put this book down.

Elizabeth Benoit is still a fairly new sheriff and, while she’s seen her share of things going on in her little county over the past couple of years, she was not prepared for a 25 year old bandaid to be ripped off. Elizabeth’s best friend, who is also Deputy Kyle Lundquist’s sister, was murdered 25 years ago. The case had essentially gone cold until recent events started looking a lot like what occurred back then. Deputy Detective Lila Dayne is on the case as an outsider, not really being privy to the previous event.

Is it possible that Elizabeth can finally put away the dirty, crooked former sheriff? His hands could be all over this but then there are new but old faces popping back up in town too.

I can’t say enough about this book but I also don’t want to spoil anything. Just do yourself a favor and carve out the time you need to read this one in one sitting!

This is book is seriously amazing. I literally hated when I had to put it down. Deputy Lila Dayne and Sheriff Elizabeth Benoit are two of the most amazing characters I have ever come across. In fact, Sheriff Ellie, reminds me of Alex Cross who is from James Patterson’s books. I felt every emotion that these two and the rest of the sheriffs office went through as they tried to figure out the murder that happened recently and how it connected to a murder that happened decades prior. I promise you that this book is hands down one of the best books I have read. I honestly believe that everyone needs to read this book. I am also going to read the other two books, since this is Book #3. I strongly recommend that everyone gets this book now.
