The Brass Compass (Brass Compass Series Book 1) by Ellen Butler – Review by Brandy Vaughn

The Brass CompassThe Brass Compass by Ellen Butler
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This story is a good spy adventure. Butler does an awesome job crafting a suspenseful historical novel. The plot keeps you on the edge of your seat and turning the page. Characters are fleshed out with depth and humanity. I appreciate how the author adds a glossary since I’m not familiar with the German and WW2 jargon. Looking forward to the next adventure!

Operation Blackbird (Brass Compass Series Book 2) by Ellen Butler – Review by Brandy Vaughn

Operation BlackbirdOperation Blackbird by Ellen Butler
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is book 2 in the series. It’s a companion to The Brass Compass, set during WWII, but can be enjoyed as a standalone. The story is full of twists and turns, tension, unknown as to who can be trusted and who people really are. I was completely immersed in this time period and all that was happening within these pages. If you love well-woven, tense, and intriguing historical stories full of dramatic action, then this is definitely the book for you!

Although I haven’t read the first book, Complicit, in the series I was drawn into this story from page one! The New Mexico setting is easily visualized in the story. Each chapter is from the viewpoint of characters Kate or Tilly. This gives more depth to the plot. When I put this book down, I kept wondering about the characters and what would happen next. I would love to have my own adobe hacienda like the one Kate has in the book! If you like psychological thriller novels, this one won’t disappoint! The writing and plot will keep you turning page after page. I definitely will go read book one, and can’t wait for book three!

The first page brings me to the world of TWD. Excellent backstory and character development! Vanished fragments of humanity, committing necessary evil, desperation, and trying to keep your child alive in an apocalypse is excellent story telling. I was drawn in and couldn’t put the book down! A definite must read!

Ritual Obsession (Blood Obsession Book 1) by R.L. Dunn – Review by Brandy Vaughn

Ritual Obsession (Blood Obsession Book 1)Ritual Obsession by R.L. Dunn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

New York City is under siege, by a diabolical serial killer designated as The Bathtub Murderer, which I thought was unique. This mystery-romantic suspense gives the reader plenty of action, romance, voodoo rituals, graphic depictions of both consensual and nonconsensual sex, and murder.

This story has excellent strong female lead characters. You empathize for them when they go through heartbreak and traumatizing experiences. The storyline is sometimes emotionally intense, as it touches on the subject of murder, sexual assault and the aftermath of surviving sexual assault. Please be advised that many readers may find the story disturbing and/or triggering. The author does include a trigger warning at the beginning of the book, which is appreciated.

This is an excellent start to the series and reminds me of the In Death series by J.D. Robb without the setting in the future! I look forward to reading more in the Blood Obsession series!
