Obedience (Ties That Bind Book 1) by Liza Snow – Review by Micalah Weatherholtz

ObedienceObedience by Liza Snow
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Obedience centers around Cassandra, who has decided since she was young that she wants to be a silk aerialist, and attend circus college, due to seeing a performance when she was a child of a famous circus aerialist. Our other main character is that aerialist Cassandra saw when she was a child. Chandler definitely isn’t all that she expected as she discovers his “night life” in a club while attending school but it only causes her attraction to run deeper. I enjoyed their journey in finding their way to each other, the background story with Cassandra trying to prosecute her uncle, and would definitely look forward to reading more from this author. Well done!

This story took me by surprise, and left me wanting so much more! I cannot wait to see where this story goes… This first book was so emotional. It truly had it all – romance and suspense and intimacy and secrets and darkness all rolled into one. This was a very dynamic story, and I am glad I found Liza Snow. I cannot wait to see what else she writes!

I wasn’t sure what to expect from The Boys of Alpha Block as it is the first book I’ve read by this author. The cover grabbed my attention, and the synopsis sealed the deal, so I gave it a go. This is an emotional read as the author really does their best to show the realities of a correctional facility for young boys. The drama will have you flipping pages as quickly as possible to find out what happens next. The boys will do whatever is necessary to escape, but will any of them make it or will they all suffer the worst consequences imaginable?
I couldn’t put this down as I was completely invested in these characters. I am definitely keeping an eye on anything this author releases as their writing style is mesmerizing and engaging. I highly recommend picking this book up to go on the emotional and dramatic rollercoaster that is The Boys of Alpha Block.

Holy Cow! This book was absolutely phenomenal! It features a group of boys who are in Juvenile Detention who have made the decision to break out. This book shows what is happening with the boys and the hopelessness, desperation, and tension. However, it also features the adults who are there to help and work with the boys. This book reads like some of the absolute best books and movies that feature adults working with troubled youth. As a teacher, I felt both groups of characters jump of the pages. I was kept on the edge of my seat because I definitely wanted to see what would happen next. I definitely saw myself thinking indepth about how society can fail complete groups of people. It got me thinking about the education system and it tugged at my heart strings. I definitely recommend this book, but be prepared to keep reading from the time you start until the time you finish! Its one you won’t want to put down!

I really struggled to connect to characters. I understand the struggle they have with the authority figures in their life. The kind versus the overbearing who run unchecked and because of their power many lean toward abusive and humiliating to the boys. About 60 percent the story picked up and moved along. We left the teacher and was more concentrated on what the boys were doing. There is an element of “will they or won’t they” that kept me turning pages.

Overall I felt this was a slow moving story which led to a lot of page turning. I was initially drawn to see about the life of these boys. I fid get some if that but its a snippet into their life and what they are doing. Good story but not great for me.

This book pushed me far beyond my comfort zone. Despite that, I decided to give it a chance and delve into its pages. The story it presented was undeniably captivating, but it often got tangled up in excessive details of Shibari and sexual encounters. It was difficult to reconcile the characters’ deep intimacy with their underlying secrets, which constantly undermined the trust they claimed to have. However, amidst these complexities, the author’s vivid descriptions of the aerial routines were simply breathtaking, transporting me to a world where I could almost witness them firsthand.

This book reminded me of Freedom Writer’s Diary, yet author Nancy Sullivan dives deeper in to each boy’s (inmates) backgrounds and stories of why they landed in the detention center/prison. The writing was powerful and very moving, and realistic, edge-of-your-set type of writing.

Not these easiest subject matter (especially the preface), yet enjoyable novel, and makes you think (at least it made me think, being an educator) how society fails these teenagers (among countless others) and what the “best” way is to rehabilitate them to lead “normal” lives.

I highly recommend Obedience by Liza Snow! This book is X rated and only for adults. I absolutely loved all the characters and dynamics of the story. Even though the focus is the forbidden romance blossoming between Cassandra and Chandler the twists and turns and plot of the story were extremely refreshing. The main storyline is about Cassandra following her dream of being a silk aerialist for Cirque du Lys. She finally gets to train under her idol and mentor, Chandler. Chandler is her professor and mentor and should not blur the boundary between them. The book switches the viewpoint between Cassandra and Chandler perfectly. The passionate, steamy scenes in the book feel natural and I loved the BDSM aspects such as bondage. Get ready for an entertaining show at the circus!

The Boys of Alpha Block by Nancy Nau Sullivan. This was such a good book. Its the story of a group of teenage boys incarcerated at Alpha Correctional Center a juvenile detention center. These boys have been humiliated, abused and degraded by the guards. The boys begin to think that trying to escape might be the better option. They are being held like animals in a cage. Working together they devise a plan to break out thinking that its got to be better than staying in this place waiting to be raped, starved and beat up. This place is not a rehabilitation its a torture chamber. The Teachers and some of the guards know something is about to happen because they can feel the tension in the air. Some of the boys become lifetime friends and will do whatever they can to protect each other. I was really upset with the teachers and guards for the way they let these kids be treated. This book will tug at your heart.

I was very impressed with this book. I was actually very intrigued with the whole thing. It was so well written that reading about the circus and the training you really feel like you’re sitting there watching it unfold before your eyes. It was so detailed that I almost forgot I was reading it. the love and chemistry that happens between the two main characters Cassandra and chandler made me feel like I was involved in something that I wasn’t supposed to know about. It kept me wanting to read more, I really couldn’t put it down. I felt like I couldn’t read it fast enough to find out what was going to happen next. I usually don’t grab romance reads but this book had me on an emotional journey, it was a little slow but the action, love scenes were well worth it.

I was intrigued with the storyline and the cover of this book and decided to dive in….and this was quite an enjoyable read! This story gave me lots of suspense, intrigue, rawness of the characters and definitely my heart for these boys and what they suffer as far as abuse…this author did a great job of storytelling.

What is the ultimate price of freedom and is it truly worth the cost? The boys at the correctional institute stir up a way to escape…..but at what worth? Escape the abuse from the institute officers… something has to happen……..

This story is truly a very good read…the struggle and what the boys endure at times….my heart.

I am so thankful this is the first book in a series because whoa… I love how Cassandra and Chandler’s chemistry simmers as the story unfolds. The setting is unique as they are circus performers, and it made their characters compelling and endearing, and I love them together. This story twists and turns like a good mystery should and kept me in suspense and at the edge of my seat the entire time! It was hard to put this book down and not read it in one, long sitting. It’s steamy romance, vibrant storytelling, and characters I couldn’t get enough of. I tend to shy away from a lot of steamy romances, but this one has my full recommendation. I can’t wait to get my hands on book two!

Who doesn’t love a forbidden, age-gap romance?! This is the story of Cassandra (the student) and Chandler (the teacher) and how their lives, present and past, intertwine as she becomes his protégé. I do love how quickly this book hooked me and Snow’s writing is excellent. I absolutely love the dual perspectives…it’s one of my favorite things being able to get both main characters’ POVs. I think Snow handled the spice very nicely in this book and though it was a slow-burn, I liked the pacing. There were a few times where some transitions were abrupt and that kind of jarred me; however, I enjoyed the book. This did end on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to get my hands on the 2nd book.

This is the heart-wrenching tale of the “Boys of Alpha Block.” It takes place in a juvenile detention center where the boys are subjected to the horrors of physical, mental, emotional, and (sometimes) sexual abuse, as well as abuse of power, humiliation and degradation, and complete disregard for their education. I would consider this book to have a slow pacing but I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough to find out what was going to happen next. This book will take an emotional toll on you; however, there are bright spots in it too. Friendships are formed and there is hope which does ease some of the tension of all of the darkness. I think one of the things that has stuck with me long after I’ve finished the last page is the fact that there were “good” people in positions to help the boys and they just stood idly by. This book is definitely worth the read, but do be prepared to have your heart tugged at and to have a good stare at the wall when you’re done.

This book was exciting and thrilling. The boys plotting an escape because, quite frankly, the guards were jerks. The story is full of drama. The teachers just wanted to do the right things by the boys. This was a story I had to devour in one sitting. You can’t put it down. Once you get pulled into Alpha Block, you can’t leave. The characters are so well-written that you feel like you know them. Their struggle is real. Though the boys committed crimes, they didn’t deserve to be abused like that. An amazingly well-done story that had me sucked in and reading it page to see what was coming next. The English teacher knew something was coming, she had me looking. The story flows so well. I can’t recommend this book enough. I hope to read more from this author. Check it out, you won’t be sorry.

This was a really good book! The circus aspect was very different from what I expected and nothing I’ve honestly ever read before. It was very easy for me to get immersed in this story. My one complaint is that the timelines changed pretty abruptly, so I kept losing my focus during chapters changes. There is a lot of mystery and untold things that take a while to get to the bottom of, and I’m ready to see what happens in book two for sure! This story does end on a cliffhanger, for anyone who doesn’t like that happening.

Hooooooolllllllllllllllllllyyyyy Cow. Chandler could tie me up anytime. Oh, that voice. I am in for this series, be it two or twelve books.

Can we talk about, just for one second, how this book ended? I mean, all the unanswered questions. There is so much I need to know. So much I want to know. Will she forgive him for leaving her in the silks that way? How linked are their families? How much danger are they in? Why did they go after the ex-wife? So many questions!!!

The way this author describes the way things feel, smell, taste, sound, or look is absolutely impressive. This book was a feast for the senses. When does the 2nd one come out? Tomorrow? Yesterday?

Obedience: A Dark Student Teacher Romantic Suspense (Ties That Bind Book 1)

Chandler and Cassandra have a very interesting and complicated relationship. They are teacher/student and both aerialists. But there is intense attraction and a little bit of self loathing and a lot of hot and cold feelings from Chandler. That frustrated me some especially since neither one of them is a young adult in their late teens or early twenties.

I found myself getting very caught up in the second shibari scene and also never thought about how erotic aerial artistry could be until now.

Cassandra has an amazing friend in Alex, everyone needs an Alex in their life. She also finds Henry and Dana along the way.

Chandler is a mess, he has too many demons he is dealing with and gets stuck in his head way too often, though I understand how easy that can be at times.

As frustrated as I would get at times I did enjoy the book and definitely found myself getting lost in the pages. The description of the ropes work was enthralling and I definitely want more.

Looking forward to reading the next book by Ms. Snow and hopefully get a happy ending.

Alpha Block is a boys correctional facility. The boys are in for misdemeanours, murder and everything in between. Life is not easy and being caged in is even worse. The boys are planning to escape and everyone has a roll to play. Caroline McBride teaches them and truly believes in the rehabilitation of these youths. Her intuition is telling her that something is brewing but she can’t figure out what. She believes in these boys and wants to help them choose a better way of life. Unfortunately she keeps getting railroaded by the deputies. There are rules for a reason.

This book was really stepping out of the box for me. It was not my usual genre but it sounded interesting so I took a chance. The story was well written. I’m not sure how I feel about it though. It made me sad. I felt bad for the boys and the lives that they lived. The way the deputies treated them got me angry. One thing that I did struggle with (I know it sounds silly) was the font size. It was so small that I got annoyed reading the book. It’s probably just me being crazy so don’t let it deter you from reading this story.

This is the second book in the series which I didn’t initially realise as it can be read as a standalone. I’ve read some other books by the author, so I was really looking forward to reading this one. It did not disappoint.

As usual I enjoyed the writing style used, it added to my enjoyment in reading. The story had me hooked, now I’m not usually one to go for love triangles as I feel they’re a bit over-done, but it was done well and, in the plot, it worked.

There’s darkness, suspense and mystery which I thrive on when reading so this was a great book for me. I’ll be going back to read the first in the series and impatiently wait for another!

Stalked by the Devil is part of the To Kiss a Stalker Series. It is a fast-paced romantic suspense that centers around the story of Melody, her sister Sahara, and Sahara’s billionaire boyfriend Keith. Melody is unemployed and living with her successful, supermodel sister Sahara. Sahara is dating billionaire Keith and is hopelessly in love with him, but Melody hates him and is convinced there is something sinister lurking under Keith’s charming exterior. Melody is determined to find out the truth behind Keith’s charming façade and prove that he is not a good person and is not the man her sister thinks that he is. Danger lurks in the shadows as Melody tries to prove who Keith really is and neither of the sisters may be safe when Sahara gets a stalker.

This was a fast-paced, intense, and captivating storyline with characters that are instantly relatable and engaging. Melody has the best interests of her sister at heart even though it is hard for Sahara to see. There is a history between them that involves meddling in past relationships, so this plays a factor in how Sahara treats Melody when Melody tells her that she does not like or trust Keith. Keith is someone that you instantly dislike because he comes across as slimy, manipulative, condescending, and arrogant. The author did a great job of building the suspense and mystery in this book as we learn who we can or cannot trust. The twists and turns that will grab your attention and keep you reading to find out what happens next. This book had romance, action, danger, mystery, stalking, and obsession.
