The Boy Friend by Mika Jolie – Review by Debi Kircher

The Boy FriendThe Boy Friend by Mika Jolie
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Boy Friend by Mika Jolie, a standalone novel.

This is the story of Cori and Dean, 23 years ago he yanked on one of her pigtails and she punched him in the gut in elementary school and they have been BFFs ever since, like peanut butter and jelly totally inseparable. This story is told 100% from Dean’s POV, it is the first book I have read by this author and also from the guys POV, it was written so that it seemed he was actually talking to me. “Don’t roll your eyes” it really did feel that way. 🙂

Coriander “Cori” Phillips is Dean Morello’s smokin’ hot best friend, an art teacher at their former elementary school, she is smart, perceptive, funny and extremely kind. She didn’t have the most stable childhood but has just about everything figured out in her life except for one thing.

Dean Morello, is confident, cocky, good looking and has no problem finding women to spend time with him. He is definitely not into commitment, love, or marriage and is completely upfront with anyone he chooses to spend time with. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth yet along with his two best friends work hard as their fathers mold them into taking over the financial firm they own.

Cori and Dean’s relationship is completely platonic, they have never even kissed. They are each other’s shoulder to cry on and can and do talk about anything. On one of their weekly non-date dinner dates Cori announces that she has made a decision about her life. Dean is taken by surprise and a bit shocked by this decision but decides it’s best to just be the friend he is supposed to be and offer to help her. The problem is helping her has him dealing with thoughts and feelings that have never really entered his mind before. He was also starting to deal with fears that this decision could be the beginning of the end for their friendship.

Can a man and woman just be friends? What happens when one makes a decision causing the other to question this and possibly want more? What happens when those lines get blurred? Can their friendship survive?

I really liked this book, I loved the friends that were a part of Cori and Dean’s lives, I loved both of their families and I loved the comical interaction between all of them. I loved that the hot scenes were just enough and didn’t take away from the actual storyline. I’m left wondering if other characters in this book will also get their own books in the future. I hope so because I would definitely want to check back in on all of them. I’m giving this book 4 stars only because it was hard to get used to not having anything from Cori’s POV, it was hard not knowing how she felt during a lot of the book. The author did a great job from his POV of how she felt and most of the time it really worked. I definitely recommend this book..it was great!!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dean Morello and Coriander Phillips have been friends for twenty years. Friends ever since their very first meeting. A chance meeting in the school playground when she punched him after he pulled her hair. They are the best of friends and have been inseparable all this time. She is the Ying to his Yang. He his her boy friend. Not to be mistaken with boyfriend. She needs advice, no problem he is there. She needs a shoulder to cry on he’s her man. She needs a hug, no problem. She is one of the guys, she is fun, loving, loyal, a free spirit, heart of gold and smoking hot but they are just friends, a purely platonic relationship. Until it’s not.

Dean is having trouble with what he feels. Feelings he has never felt before. Feelings that are as strange as they are complicated and conflicting. He is now seeing one of his best friends is a different light. Dean finds himself thinking about more than a best friend should. He wants Coriander as more than the boy friend, he wants to be the boyfriend. He only has one problem he has to show her they can be more than friends.

As the book says “According to the law of attraction, women and men can’t be friends”.

Will Dean reconcile his feelings in time? Will Dean break her heart? Will Dean lose the best thing he never knew he wanted? Will he confess all before it is too late? Is Coriander willing to step over the proverbial line from best friends to lovers?

I really enjoyed this story. It was told by the male point of view in a very unique and clever way. I found myself constantly laughing at the things he said, thought and did, typical man stud. There were however a few moments when I wanted to slap him into gear. If you are looking for a little comedic romance then no need to look any further. Mika is a very clever story teller. This is definitely a hit, I can’t wait to read more of her work.
