The Earl's Match (The Thompsons of Locust Street, #5)The Earl’s Match by Holly Bush
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the 5th and final book of The Thompsons of Locust Street although this is the first one that I have read. I didn’t feel lost but I do think I want to go back and read the other 4 books. I really loved the characters and their interactions with each other. Payden and Clarice are an unlikely pair that had my interest from the start. I also loved how the story flashed back to explain Payden’s time in Scotland.

An immensely well written historical contemporary romance with a dark undercurrent.
Payden returns to Philadelphia after a very disturbing and violent 5 year return to Scotland, he is withdrawn and sullen. Clarice is finding society life very underwhelming and struggles to dodge the wranglings of her mother, of marrying a gentleman and increasing their standing in society. Their relationship has its ups and downs, but their chemistry is undeniable.
The author describes the scenes so vividly that it is easy to really imagine you are part of the story.
I did not realise that this novel is in a series, it really stands strongly on its own, but I am going to backtrack to get a fuller all round vision of the family and past happenings.

The Earl's Match (The Thompsons of Locust Street, #5)The Earl’s Match by Holly Bush
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This historical romance is part of a series but can be read as a standalone, but once you read this you’ll find yourself wanting to read the other books in the series so that you can learn more about these wonderful characters.
In The Earl’s Match we follow Payden Thompson and his struggle to find purpose and meaning in his life after returning from Scotland where he was on a deadly and dangerous mission to save his family. Payden has returned broken and haunted by the things he’s seen and done. He’s built up a wall to help keep him and everyone around him alive. But how will he move forward now that his family is safe? As Payden is navigating this new life he meets Clarice, a headstrong, beautiful lady who will not settle for the average men that are constantly being paraded around in their sophisticated social circle. Clarice does not initially like Payden due to his hard exterior and lack of manners and decorum, but there is something there, more than his good looks, that keeps him on her mind. This book will keep you entertained and wanting to get to the bottom of the dark past that Payden is hiding. Through his flashbacks we get to see what makes him tick and maybe Clarice will help chip that hard exterior away.

Holly Bush is the author of The Earl’s Match, a historical based romance, and is the fifth book in The Thompsons of Locust Street Series. Each of the books in this series can be read as a standalone, which was a good thing because this was the first of this series I have picked up. This engaging novel followed Payden and Clarice. I really loved how Holly wrote their characters and how the characters developed as the story went on. It almost feels like you’re there in this time with these characters and how real they felt as people struggling with real life things. It was vivid and descriptive and I really enjoyed reading it.

Payden Thompson went to Scotland, his homeland, to save his land and title from an illegitimate relative. He went through many hardships and returns home heroic but broken. Clarice Endicott is pretty much done with the boring social scene. Her mother tends to meddle too much for her liking. Her mother is rearing for her to get married and is trying to find her the perfect match. The chance meeting between these two may be just what they both need. This was a good historical romance. I didn’t realize this was part of a series and the final book to boot. You can read this as a standalone, however I want to know about the rest of the clan so I will be reading the others.

The start of the book does catch your attention enough for you to keep reading. After the prologue it starts at the end of Payden and Robbie’s journey the past five years. I like how the author brings about his past memories into the present. The flashbacks do give the reader a sense of what Payden has gone through during the war. I like how all the characters complement each other in some way.

The Earl's Match (The Thompsons of Locust Street, #5)The Earl’s Match by Holly Bush
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was my first book by the author, I didn’t realize it was book 5 in a series, but I felt like the author did a great job of summarizing the previous relationships without it being overwhelming. I am always a fan of historical romances and I love that this one took place in America. I thought the author did a great job of creating a vivid and descriptive world, I really felt like I had been transported back in time. I also enjoyed the POV from both of the characters so we could see what they were both thinking and feeling. I always love Clarice as an unconventional heroine who wants more than just to be married, she want to be independent. Payden is a broken man after the horrors he suffered trying to get his family’s land back and having his revenge on the man who had ruined his life. The two of them have an unconventional meeting and from there they just can’t seem to stay away from each other. The story is definitely a page turner with drama, twists and turns, and love. This was an absolutely fantastic novel that I recommend for any lover of historical fiction. I can’t wait to check out the rest of the series and see what else the author has written.

This was such a great book to read over the weekend! I made a mistake and read this book not realizing it was part of a series. Although I’m sure the experience is slightly better with all of the history and background, I didn’t feel like I was lost at any point. The flow of this story was great, so I read it all in one day. This is a new author for me, but definitely one I’ll be keeping an eye on because their talent is apparent in just one book! I loved reading about Payden and Clarice although it is absolutely heartbreaking at times. If you enjoy historical romances, this should absolutely be your next read because it is magnificent!

The Earl’s Match (The Thompsons of Locust Street Series) by Holly Bush is a great historical romance

It turns out that Payden Thompson’s hunt for the man who is endangering his family and clan is anything than a simple conflict. After a brave attempt at rescue goes bad, he is brutally hunted down and abused by the man’s followers and his illegitimate kin. After his valiant return to America, Payden finds himself unable to let go of his worries and trauma due to the violence and loss he experienced in Scotland.Clarice Endicott is bored with Philadelphia society and resents her mother’s attempts to match her with one of the wealthier young men looking for a well-connected bride. She meets the attractive but gloomy Payden Thompson by coincidence; he has recently returned from Scotland after five years away.

Every page was exciting and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen. The story really brings us into their world. I couldn’t put the book down.

The Earl's Match (The Thompsons of Locust Street, #5)The Earl’s Match by Holly Bush
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An enjoyable and engaging historical romance which kept me captivated from page one until the last page. Payden Thompson returns to America having been imprisoned and beaten whilst in Scotland, pursuing the man who had been threatening his family and his clan. The violence and loss has left Payden feeling fearful and the trauma is haunting him. Meanwhile, Clarice Endicott is finding Philadelphia’s society boring and she’s against her mother’s schemes to find her a wealthy husband. Then she is introduced to the handsome but sullen Payden and he captures her interest, especially when she learns that he has just returned from five dangerous years in Scotland. Clarice also makes an impression on Payden, but he is so consumed by his past violence and tragedy that he can’t see past that. I loved Payden and Clarice and their chemistry really came across in the narrative. The storyline kept me hooked, and the descriptive narrative brought both the characters and the setting vividly to life, making me feel immersed in the story. The added historical details made me feel as though I had been transported back in time and made the era the story is set in also come alive. I hadn’t realised that this novel was part of a series, about the unconventional Thompson family who are taking Philadelphia’s high society by storm. Although I read it happily as a standalone story, I personally feel that the family’s relationships and their backstories would be better understood if the books are read in order.

The Earl’s Match (The Thompsons of Locust Street Series) by Holly Bush – Review by Stephanie Runyon

The Earl's Match (The Thompsons of Locust Street, #5)The Earl’s Match by Holly Bush
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In October 1871, Payden MacTavish Thompson and Robbie McClintock traveled to Scotland to reclaim Dunacres. Dunacres was home to the Earls of Taviston but had fallen prey to Cameron Plowman. After his parents were murdered during a voyage to New York City, Payden was raised by his fourteen-year old sister and Aunt Murdoch. Muireall had changed their name to Thompson in hopes that Plowman would not find them. Unfortunately, he found the family and terrorized them with kidnappings and more. Payden was going to end the reign of terror, and his best friend, Robbie, accompanied him. They had thought they would only be gone for a month or two. They were very mistaken.

In May 1876, Payden and Robbie were returning. Payden had successfully reclaimed his family’s Scottish property and killed Plowman. Leaving his trust in Kenneth Mitchell as a steward, he knew Dunacres would recover from the neglect. However, he couldn’t let go of the memories of the horrors he endured and his broken heart. Robbie was bringing his paramour, Colleen Sinclair, with him. The only woman Payden had ever loved was killed by Plowman’s men. Despite killing the men, Payden and Robbie were both placed in a dungeon. Robbie was returning with a limp and a facial scar. Payden returned with anguish and flashbacks of death.

Several days after their return, Muireall asks Payden for assistance. She was helping the Sisters of Charity rescue a woman and her children from an abusive husband. She thought his presence might prevent Mr. Faraday from interfering. Payden called Robbie as a backup and joined Muireall. Despite the presence of a police officer, Mr. Faraday was holding a knife to his wife’s neck. After seeing Robbie take the last child and an elderly woman out the back of the house, Payden and Officer McLean tried to negotiate for the woman’s freedom. Mr. Faraday pointed his knife at the officer and then began to swing the blade towards the woman. Payden pulled his pistol and killed him.

At the orphanage, Muireall and Payden were preparing to leave when the Endicott women brought donations. When Clarice Endicott’s younger sister faints from the sight of blood on Payden’s shirt, Clarice glares at the incorrigible man. A second trip to the orphanage with clothing for Mrs. Faraday finds Payden and Clarice facing each other. After accusing Payden of being a monster for not covering the blood that he probably got from being an apprentice butcher, Payden decides to take her snobbery down a peg. The blood had been from Mr. Faraday. Clarice pales and is horrified to have misjudged Payden by his appearance. This is not the last time Payden and Clarice will bump heads.

This is an intriguing story with amazing character development. Beyond romance, the story dives into overcoming grief and ignoring what is proper to do what is right. I liked Payden’s view, as it felt relatable. The archaic stigma of a woman’s value was based on her family’s background and who she married, which were definite obstacles for Clarice. The alternating perspectives of Payden and Clarice added depth to the story by showing their insecurities.
I recommend The Earl’s Match for anyone who enjoys a forbidden romance full of adventure and intrigue.

The Earl's Match (The Thompsons of Locust Street, #5)The Earl’s Match by Holly Bush
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the 5th book in The Thompson’s of Locust Street. I didn’t realise that this was the final book in the series butbit can be read as a standalone. This is a historical romance and I loved the authors writing and how I was transported back into that era.
I also love how the author portrayed Payden, by showing his struggles and torments because of the things he witness and had to do.

Payden is the youngest member in the Thompson family. When his family is threatened by an enemy in his rightful home of Scotland he knows he needs to end this man before he ends up harming his family.
So with his cousin Robbie they set off to rid their people of this evil man.
They are successful and Payden takes his title of Earl but it’s not all celebration. Payden is left with scars both physically, mentally and emotionally that he fears he will never recover from.

When he meets Clarice they don’t hit it off right away but there is something about her that slowly starts to breathe life into Payden and makes him feel like living again.
When Clarice meets Payden she sees a very serious and sad man in front of her. She can tell he hides pain and wants to find out what it is and hope to help him heal.
Can she be the balm to ease the pain in Payden’s soul?
Things won’t be easy for them and there are obstacles to challenge them but can they be strong enough to push through them and allow love to win?
I really enjoyed this beautiful story and I will definitely be going back and reading the previous books in the series.

Payden has returned from a long and dangerous trip to his homeland, but he’s absolutely broken from all that transpired during his fight for his lands and title. He had to do things he wasn’t proud of to win and he doesn’t know how to move on.
He remains just a ghost of himself until he meets Clarice, who is like a bright light inside a dark tunnel. Not only does she light up his life, but she doesn’t care about marriage and wants to live an independent life before meeting Payden, but she finds herself undeniably drawn to him. She immediately breathes life into Payden and he causes her to rethink the life she thought she wanted.
They quickly start falling in love but it won’t be an easy street to be together. Much drama, angst, and complications will arise and will they be able to overcome it all to be together? Can Clarice heal Payden’s tortured soul?
This is a wonderfully done historical romance with so much detail and so artfully written. I didn’t read the other 4 books in the series but j never felt lost!

This is a well written story about a chance meeting between Clarice and Payden. Will she be able to lift him up after what he has been through with his family? I enjoyed watching their growth and chemistry throughout the story. They made the story easy to read and hard to put down. I enjoyed what they add to the story. This is a fast paced story that is full of romance and one you don’t want to miss. An engaging story that keeps you coming back for more and turning pages fast. I highly recommend reading this book.

I can’t help but LOVE a historical romance read they really are my absolute favourite to read. I was really impressed with this book and loved every second of it. The author did a fantastic job with the descriptive language and for me that is so important I this kind of story – I need to be able to imagine what I am reading in order to be transported back in time.
I really felt for Payden – what a journey he has been on. I could really feel hard everything had been for him and everything he had endured.
Clarice really wasn’t what I expected but I loved her. She was just so perfect for Payden and I felt like she was everything he needed to help him heal.
This book could be read as a standalone however I’d recommend reading the whole series to understand the family dynamics!
A fabulous read and one that I would highly recommend.

The Earl’s Match (The Thompsons of Locust Street Series) by Holly Bush. This is the 5th book in the Thompson’s of Locust Street series. Its been 5 years since Payden Thompson, the true Heir to the Earl Of Traviston and his best friend Robbie McClintock return to Dunacres, Scotland. They have returned to find Cameron Plowman who murdered his family and took his claim. When Payden returns he is broken by everything he had to do to win victory. Payden is struggling to fit back into society after the atrocities he’s seen and done. When he meets Clarice Endicott he is smitten, although, Clarice is a older debutante and has no desires to marry. That is, until she meets Payden, there is something about him that touches her. Clarice is the only thing to bring Payden back to reality and he doesn’t want to lose her. Clarice is so independent but she really took care of Payden and their love story is beautiful. I think you could read this as a standalone but I highly recommend reading them in order to better enjoy the characters and the stories!

This is an enjoyable read that will lead you through family dynamics involving murder, adventure, angst, romance, and lots of drama. I enjoy reading historical romances, especially those involving families like the Thompsons. This book can be read as a stand alone, which is how I came across this one. I’m looking forward to reading the previous books in the series. The characters are very loveable and because of that, I want to read more on the other siblings featured in previous books.

The Earl’s Match is the fifth and final book in The Thompsons of Locust Street series by Holly Bush. This is the first book that I have read by Ms. Bush, so I really didn’t know what to expect going from one of her stories- but as I do love a great historical romance, I took a chance and dove right in. Going into this, I also didn’t realise that it was the fifth and final book in the series, so I will need to go back and read the rest of the series now. Thankfully, this can be read as a standalone, and I didn’t feel like I was ‘missing’ anything. This series follow the Thompson siblings, as each gets their own book and HEA.
Paydon Thompson has endured much and after a dangerous and traumatic ‘mission’, he has returned a broken man. But he might just find his match in Clarice Endicott, as she breathes ‘life’ into his world- and so begins the healing power of love. Things aren’t quite that simple though, and these two definitely have a few obstacles to overcome on their path to happiness.
This has plenty of angst, drama, emotion, adventure, darker elements, family dynamics, tragedy, pain, trauma, violence, and more.
The series (so far):
-The Bachelor’s Bride (Book #1 — Elspeth Thompson and Alexander Pendergast’s story)
-The Bareknuckle Groom (Book #2 — James Thompson and Lucinda Vermeal’s story)
-The Professor’s Lady (Book #3 — Kirsty Thompson and Albert Watson’s story)
-The Captain’s Woman (Book #4 — Muireall Thompson and Anthony Marcus’s story)
-The Earl’s Match (Book #5 — Payden Thompson and Clarice Endicott’s story)
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Holly Bush!

I really liked Clarice she was a strong character and seemed to be perfect for Paydon. My emotions were all over the place. Will Clarice be able to help Paydon get past his dark memories? Will he get a HEA? Overall I really enjoyed this book. The author does a great job with her writing. I can’t wait to read more, 1-click and get started today.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Earl’s Match is a contemporary romance historical tale that has many layers to make it interesting. It is the fifth book in the Thompsons of Locust Street. I love the cover. Each book tells the story of one of the Thompsons siblings and this one is Paydon’s story.
I don’t read a lot of historical romance it’s not really my genre but if it is done well, as this one is I am happy. Holly paints a vivid picture of the time with her narrative that makes it easily imagined. The characters feel real and have flaws and vulnerabilities. I admit I did quite enjoy this story.
This heartwarming story is filled with passion and pain, struggle, and drama.
Clarice is not your normal society girl in fact she prefers life outside of society where she can breathe and be herself. She is perfect for Payden, she is just what he needs to ground him and pull him out of his funk.
Paydon is still reeling from his imprisonment and is finding it hard to full out of the darkness that seems to have settled into his soul. However there maybe one person who maybe just be what he needs.
If you like historical romance, then you will like not only this book but this series.

This book is a brilliant example of how to write a great historical romance story. It is engaging right from the word go and I found myself really connecting with the characters. The way the author told this story made it even more interesting.

I found this to be an interesting read. Historical romance is not usually my genre. I chose this one because I thought the story sounded promising. It lived up to my expectations. Payden and Robbie returned from a troubling stint abroad. Payden was basically dealing with what we in the modern times call PTSD. He had a tough time adjusting to his home life again. Clarice brought some hope to his life again. Reading about their romance and how they adjusted and worked things out was heartwarming and good to read. This a wonderful romance and I’d recommend it anyone to give it a shot. I really enjoyed the characters, they made the story.
