My kids always love it when we pick up a book by this author, and this one was no different! It never fails to amaze me the way she writes amazing children’s books that actually get them thinking about a deeper meaning. This one sparked a conversation in our household about fear, bullies, and anxiety. The illustrations are wonderful and really add to the storyline as well. Will the bird ever find the courage to break out of his egg? Read on to find out! I highly recommend picking this book up for any kiddos in your life, whether that’s at home or in a school setting.

Absolutely loved the watercolor illustrations. The book touched on some very important and sadly real-world problems with bullying. Led to a long conversation with my seven-year-old son about why people bully others for seemingly no reason. Sadly, he has some real-world experience with bullying in pre-k, with the same thing he was a smaller kid and a bigger kid in his class tried to intimidate him sadly I can’t be at school to protect him, but his big brother was able to step in and get the kid to stop. Once again, the talented Lois Wickstrom finds a simplistic and beautiful way of bringing real topics to younger children in a way that is natural and unfortunately realistic.

Mama Warbler is waiting for her nest full of eggs to hatch, but the first one who does, isn’t her own, it is the Cuckoo’s egg, but she still looks after it until all her eggs have hatched but one.

The last egg belongs to a very timid warbler, it also doesn’t help that the Cuckoo is whispering about how awful it is outside off the egg and to stay in her shell where it is safe.

What will the last warbler chick do, stay in the shell, or venture out into the big wide world? This is a charming story with a lovely message within about kindness and how it can affect others when it isn’t reciprocated.

This Egg Won’t Hatch is a kid’s book designed for children between the ages of four to eight years of age. It tells the story of a Mama Warbler who is waiting for the last egg to hatch in her nest. The first egg was too large and turned out to be a Cuckoo that was laid in her nest. Mama Warbler decide to accept the Baby Cuckoo as her own and treat it as she would if it were one of her own eggs. The last egg, Timid Chick, will not hatch because the baby is too scared to come out of her shell after being told by the Baby Cuckoo that she should stay in her egg because it is no fun inside. One day while Mama Warbler is off getting food to feed her babies the Baby Cuckoo kicks Timid Chick out of the nest. This gives her a whole new outlook on things. Mama Warbler is very patient as she tries to coax Timid Chick out of her shell. This was a beautiful story with cute characters that teach valuable lessons in patience, understanding, love, kindness, family, bullies, confidence, and overcoming fear. The illustrations are fun, bright, colorful, and really bring the story to life.

This is a beautifully illustrated book about a mama waiting for her last egg to hatch. Lois Wickstrom does such a nice job of telling a story that teaches while still being entertaining and engaging for young children. It is a tale of how to not be afraid and how to overcome your fear told through the eyes of birds. A great one to read with a class or just one child as it will draw out discussion about birds and the world around them.

This Egg Won’t Hatch by Lois Wickstrom. Another amazing book by Lois Wickstrom! I love her books because they are always entertaining and informative. This one is no different. Its the story of a Mama Warbler who is in the process of watching her eggs hatch. One is way to big to be a warbler and ends up being a cuckoo. The last egg won’t hatch because they are scared. The cuckoo keeps telling him to stay in his shell because its a big, bad, scary world out here. Finally Mama Warbler kicks the cuckoo out so that the timid chick can hatch. This book will help kids with anxiety and letting them know that things usually end up working out with time and patience. Such a fun book. Would make a great gift as well.

A warbler bird has a nest with her eggs in it, but there is also a bigger egg that a cuckoo bird laid there as well. Ms. Warbler doesn’t mind taking care of another egg and bird, but what she doesn’t know is that the cuckoo hatchling is being mean and frightening her last egg that hasn’t hatched. Through this cute tale you get to see how the bird overcomes his fear after being bullied. The beautiful watercolor illustrations go along with the story nicely and help engage the reader. This author is a definite go to for me as she always tends to slip in a lesson or fun learning opportunity in her stories.

I read This Egg Wont Hatch with my 7 year old son, and we both enjoyed it. He struggled with some of the words, but mostly read it himself. We had to google what a Warbler and a Cuckoo were, because he wasn’t familiar with either bird. We thought the cuckoo was really sweet and protective at first. Then we realized he’s mean and doesn’t want to share his food. What he did to timid chick was sad but we were glad it turned out okay. It was a cute little kid book. We are big fans of the author.

Adorable! It was sweet reading about mama warbler and her chicks. The cuckoo baby made me mad trying to steal food but I guess I understand since it was a bigger bird. I was happy to see the timid bird and mama able to finally bond. Lovely artwork.

This book is great for kids with anxiety, and to some extent even for those dealing with bullying and misinformation. Mama Warbler is waiting for her last baby to hatch. Sadly, the cuckoo that was the first egg in the nest to hatch is being selfish and is telling the last baby warbler that the outside world is no fun and is scary. The baby warbler doesn’t want to hatch because it’s afraid. The baby cuckoo is only thinking of himself. Thankfully, nature helps baby warbler along, and it realizes that the world isn’t as bad as they were lead to believe. This book has beautiful illustrations and is good for elementary age children.

Once again this author has put out an exciting learning story. So many things were discovered in this story. Science, siblings, a mothers love, as well as peer pressure. Yes, even peer pressure is amongst the Warbler and Cuckoo. This is such a cute story. It is well written and fun to read to children. So many questions to be answered as well as things to discover. This story is well rounded and complete. The pictures are self explained and cute to look at. I am looking forward to the next book put out by this author.

Another great read by Lois Wickstrom!

Mama Warbler is sitting on her nest keeping the eggs warm. One day, those eggs start to hatch and Mama is so excited to see her new youngins. The first one to hatch is much too big to be a warbler. She’s a cuckoo who’s mom laid her in the warbler’s nest. All the other eggs hatch but one. She’s known as the Timid Chick. She just wants to stay in her shell and when Mama Warbler is away gathering food, the Cuckoo started bullying and discouraging her from ever hatching. The Cuckoo then kicks Timid Chick out of the nest one day while Mama is away. Things have a whole new perspective after that for Timid Chick.

This is a great book for kids to learn how to stand up to bullies. It’s also great for teaching kids that it’s ok to be timid but that by doing so, they may be missing out. It’s an encouraging read that is also intended to help build up confidence in those who may not have as much as others. It’s ok to be timid but let’s work on building up courage and confidence!

The illustrations were cute and the story flowed nicey. The story reminds us that it’s important not to trust everyone. It teaches us that trust should go hand in hand with a bit of caution, and we should be aware that not everyone we come across has our best interests at heart. My 4 year old was pretty upset about the cuckoo birds actions and as a result didnt enjoy the book much after that. It may be suited best to older kids.

This Egg Won’t Hatch by Lois Wickstrom is a cute children’s story that has a lesson on overcoming fear. This could almost be a ‘companion’ book to “Just One More Egg”- as they have the same style illustrations, and the same Warbler ‘family’, nest, and feel- as the other.
The classic watercolour illustrations which accompany the story help to bring the story to life and engage the reader.
Again, what happens when a cuckoo lays her egg in a warbler nest? What happens when the all the chicks hatch, except for one? What happens to the last egg? You really should read the story if you want to find out…
Happy reading!

Wonderful children’s story that was very enjoyable, colorful illustrations and lessons learned about patience and courage. Mama Warbler’s babies are starting to hatch from her nest of eggs, starting with the biggest egg. As Mama Warbler is hard at work to find food for her babies, one little egg is left a bit timid to come out into the world….until it is time to make their appearance.

What a great story.

This children’s book tells a story about a little bird who is eagerly anticipating the hatching of an egg that has been laid in her nest. However, as time passes, the bird becomes worried when the egg won’t hatch, and she tries everything she can to encourage it to hatch. She sings to the egg, sits on it longer, and even tries to teach it to hatch. But nothing seems to work.

As the story progresses, the little bird learns an important lesson about nature and the different ways that living things develop. She comes to realize that some things are out of her control and that sometimes the best course of action is to let nature take its course.

The book is beautifully illustrated, and the story is engaging and informative for children. It teaches them about the natural world and the importance of patience and acceptance. Overall, “This Egg Won’t Hatch” is a delightful read that is both educational and entertaining for kids.

Lois is a former high school chemistry teacher and former head science teacher at Science in the City Summer Camp in Philadelphia. She has also been an adjunct science teacher at University of South Florida. Since retiring, she continues to take science classes. Her class in Forensic Biology led to Little Red, The Detective, in which Red is studying fingerprint identification, so she can tell that “Grandma” isn’t who she says she is.

Lois has taken so many science classes that she believes science is the solution to almost every problem, including the dilemmas in fairy tales. She has invented what she calls Science Folktales. In each science-based tale, the protagonist achieves a better ending than the original because of learning scientific principles. She has turned some of these tales into plays.

She has also created a series of Mermaid Science stories, which make use of water science.

Lois is married to the love of her life. She has two children, four grandchildren and a dog.
