What a great informative book. I feel like I just had a science lesson! I loved the rhyming of the story and the little facts also on the page. My 4 year old granddaughter loved me reading her this book. She was more interested in the story and not so much in the facts. The facts will be used and read better by the older children. The illustrations are fabulous and depict the story great.

Under the Bandage by Lois Wickstrom is a wonderful book. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is great for kids. It helps teach kids to keep calm, clean the cut, and let a parent put a bandage on it when you get hurt. As a mom of 2 kiddos who love being rough and always getting hurt, this book helped show my kids that it is not only ok when they get hurt, but also the importance of keeping it clean and covered, in a fun creative way.

This was a cute book. It provides an easy to understand take on what happens when you get a scrape. It’s definitely kid friendly for the demographic intended. I could see students I work with being engaged in this book. It is well thought out.

As usual, this book was an entertaining and fun story that kids can relate to so easily. This book felt much more topical that the others thanks to my son’s recent discovery of climbing (and falling). Bandages have become a regular staple in our household and this book made it all seem so much more exciting than it otherwise would have been. The illustrations in the book were incredible and we all loved looking at each and every one of them. They really brought the story to life and had is returning to it time and again. This book, and this author, is fantastic and a book that is definitely worth reading.

This was a great read for any child, the main storyline was catchy and short for the younger readers to keep interested, and then there’s science facts throughout it explaining what’s happening under a bandage when you get hurt. These were great for a kid like mine (7) who’s really into science stuff right now. Would definitely recommend this book. Great for homeschooling as well.

My band- aid obsessed neice couldn’t wait for us to read this book. While there might not be something going on under each of her many band-aids, she was excited to learn what happened when there was really a real boo boo as she put it. Wickstrom did an amazing job of balancing the information in a way that could engage with both the older kids and the younger teaching them the healing process in a way that would relate to their understanding. Between the writing and the illustrations, I would absolutely recommend this book.

Break out the first aid kits for this one. Every child should know how our body works. They also need to know how to take care of their boo-boos. As well as why we must keep them clean and protected. I love the science behind the story. The author has once again written a book with children in mind. The story is easy to read and understand. The history behind the games and toys we played with was also interesting. Another great book and must have for every child’s library.

I really enjoyed the lessons this book taught. I love the fact that when he gets hurt, he counts to three to calm down and then goes immediately to wash the dirt off. I really enjoyed this little book and I think any children will enjoy it too!
I thought this was a good book for the kiddos. It explains what happens when you get hurt and need a bandaid to keep it covered. The kids didn’t enjoy this one as much as others but the older one sat and listened while I read the whole book. Short and great colorful photos

Just like the rest of the books that I have read by Lois Wickstrom, this one as well does not disappoint. Always a fun story with wonderful illustrations. This one about the healing of a scraped knee. The fun jingle-ish type rhythm and the more technical explanations on the same page help kids of all ages learn about how wounds heal. Great story !

Under the Bandage is a fun kid book that teaches them about germs and the healing process when they get a cut. We are big fans of this author and enjoy the rhyming stories and colorful illustrations. I like that it had little fun facts added to each page to explain the story and it’s accurate terms of what is happening. My son liked the book because he just learned about cells and antibodies at school recently. I think this book would be enjoyable to younger elementary school kiddos and would be good to add to a lesson plan about first aid and keeping cuts clean.

Under the Bandage By Lois Wickstrom is children’s book that children ages 5-8 can enjoy. We loved reading this book and learning about how our bodies fight off bacteria/infection. We learned about different kinds of bacteria and infections how to treat them. We’ve read several books by this author and we love her colorful illustrations that help bring the story to life. I love that my son actually learns something useful from reading this authors books. We highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. We look forward to reading more from this Author.

My entire household always loves it when I bring home a book by this author! This one had little bits of educational information on most pages but still short enough to keep my youngest’s attention. I struggle with getting him to keep his bandaids on, so this was perfectly timed and right up his alley. The story has rhyming throughout which had us bopping along with the rhythm. I think it was really cool for both of my kiddos to see illustrations explaining how our bodies heal the bumps and scrapes that we get. This is definitely one of our top favorite books by Lois Wickstrom and hope we get to see more like this in the future! I highly recommend picking this up and sharing with the young ones in your life whether that’s at school, at a doctor’s office, or at home.

My 7 year old daughter has been learning about the human body at school and just yesterday was telling me about the body’s blood cells. I felt that Under the Bandage by Lois Wickstrom would be a great addition to her library. It was cute to see her brain connect things she’s learning while reading a children’s story and it welcomed a conversation about what she’s learned which is always cool. As a pediatric nurse and a mother, I really enjoyed this book.

Under the Bandage is a fun, engaging and imaginative story. With some of the pages have very interesting facts to learn….the story is told in a rhyme….what can happen after you skin your knee!! We learn as we follow each page to clean and cover the hurt so it feels better…..but how our body helps the healing.
This was a fun story. The illustrations were very colorful and really brought the story to life. While this book is more for ages 5- 8 years of age even the young at heart while you read to the littles can learn some new things as well and I loved that about this story.

Under the Bandage is a fun children’s story by Lois Wickstrom. The story has an educational component, as it helps to explain our bodies immune response/immune system, how it deals with bacteria/infection (liking it to a battle with soldiers), and the healing process- as well as other interesting facts found on nearly every page…with a list of our body’s main defenses found at the end of the story. Our little MC skins his knee while playing, so after washing it clean, his mother puts a bandage on it and tells him that it will heal faster if he doesn’t peek- and also tells him that he will need a new bandage put on it every day, for a week. He is very curious about what is happening ‘Under the Bandage’…. The illustrations are really cute- big, bright, bold, and colourful – bringing the story to life and really grabbed my grandchildren’s attention. The story is told in a rhyming verse, which added an extra element of interest to the overall story. While the ‘story’ itself is written in a way that is easy to read and understand, the ‘interesting facts’ portion of the story has some ‘bigger’, more complicated words which children may have trouble reading and understanding (but those parts could be skipped over if you wanted, without affecting the ‘actual’ story). Happy reading…

4 stars Under the Bandage is another unique children story from Lois. The story is told in a rhythmic rhyming way that makes the kids want to join in. Not only is there is the main story, but Lois also includes smaller pictures and information facts pertaining to a certain portion of the story. Follow along as what started out as a scrape turns into a war. A troop of soldiers ready to defend and repair and stop those that are attacking. What better and fun way to teach little minds and explain what is going on so they are not so worried about scrapes and injuries. But this is what Lois does, she takes a topic and makes it into a bright, colourful and fun learning experience without them even knowing because to them it is just a story. I would recommend this book for any 5–8-year-olds. Have fun reading.

If you read any of my reviews, you know I’m a huge fan of Lois Wickstrom! Of all the books I’ve read by her, this one is, hands down, my ABSOLUTE favorite….so far!! She writes so well that this one might be demoted at some point but it will take a lot.
This story features a young boy who loves toy soldiers. One day he has a boo-boo on his knee and his mom puts a bandage on it. The story talks about how the toy soldiers and engineers are working to put his skin back together.
I absolutely love the analogies used and I wish I would have had this book back in my nursing days. I would have read this to every one of the kiddos I took care of! The author goes a little further in depth in this story by telling about some of the bacteria that invade the body. There are some larger words here but it’s great learning for kids and adults alike! She also stresses the necessity of handwashing!
I love that this book releases today in the midst of National Nurses Week too!

“Under the Bandage” by Lois Wickstrom is a fascinating and informative story that will help children understand the process of wound healing. The story is told from the perspective of a young boy who has skinned his knee and is forced to wear a bandage by his mother.
The use of personification, such as comparing the bacteria to enemies and the construction crew to workers, helps to make the concept more accessible and memorable for young readers. The illustrations accompanying the story are also helpful in visualizing the different stages of wound healing.
This book is an excellent resource for children who have experienced wounds or injuries, as it helps to demystify the healing process and reassure them that it’s a normal part of getting better. The story also encourages children to ask questions and seek information about their own bodies, which is an important aspect of healthy development. View all my reviews

This is the story of how our bodies heal after getting hurt. I absolutely love how Wickstrom is able to take something so scientific and break it down so that not only is it understandable for kiddos but its also fun and entertaining. Our main character has skinned his knee after a fall and his mother puts a bandage on it and tells him not to peek because his body needs to be able to heal. Throughout the story, we learn exactly what our body is doing, phase by phase, as it heals. Wickstrom also includes some sidenotes with interesting little tidbits that are good for more advanced readers. As usual, the illustrations are fantastic and follow along perfectly with the story. This is such a great book to add to your Lois Wickstrom collection. Reviewed by @meggs1717

The information on the healing process is bite-sized. Being an adult, I enjoyed reading this story. This would be a cool book to have in doctor’s offices to help kiddos. Mom makes him wear a bandage when he skins his knee. She says “no peeking.” What’s going on under there? It’s a war. His soldiers against the bad bacteria. After the bad bacteria are dead, it’s time to rebuild. Now, the construction crews come in.
Lois is a former science teacher. She has written a series of science-based folktales. In each modernized tale, the protagonist achieves a better ending because of learning scientific principles. Lois likes to garden, ride her bike with her husband, cook, and she votes in every election.
