What Eyes Can’t See (Bold Journeys Series) by Paulette Stout – Review by Shannen Kern

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the third installment of the Bold Journeys series, but you can definitely read it as a standalone if you want to jump right in. The author has an incredibly way of not only engaging the reader but handling serious topics while doing so! I felt like I was on an emotional rollercoaster with some twists and turns along the way. There is definitely a strong romance theme with some steamy scenes, but there is so much more involved. The characters are well-developed and have you invested almost immediately. Barbara is a force to be reckoned with! I absolutely love her tenacity combined with the vulnerability she shows Sebastian. I must have obtained a few of these by now, but Sebastian is my new book boyfriend! You can feel their chemistry leap off the pages, and he’s relatable and compassionate. I recommend picking this up if you’re looking for a book that’s not your average romance novel!

Barbara is an up-and-coming Black lawyer on the fast track, or so she thinks. When her company is looking for a new general counsel, a position she’s held on a temporary basis for two years, she and everyone else believes that the position is hers for the taking. When she returns from a trip to the wedding of a friend, on what would have been her own wedding day, were it not for the discovery of her ex’s cheating, Barbara finds out that not only did the company not promote her to the position, but they hired the man she’d spent most of her vacation with and had hoped there was a future with. Shortly after Sebastian is hired, the CEO of the company decides to fire several employees, nearly all of whom are minorities, including Barbara. As Barbara’s life starts to unravel, and she learns that the charmed life she thought she had hasn’t been what she thought it was, Barbara decides to fight back against her former employer and help those she was fired alongside to get justice.

What Eyes Can’t See is the third book in the Bold Journeys series by Paulette Stout. It is a women’s fiction story with a contemporary spicy romance, drama, angst, social issues/commentary, opposites attract, slow burn, fling to enemies-to-lovers(ish) storyline, BWWM (interracial romance), discrimination & racism, a quest for justice, emotion, finding where you belong, and a journey of self-discovery.
While this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone without feeling like you are ‘missing’ anything, as this book focuses on a different ‘couple’.
Barbara Washington is a hardworking and ambitious attorney whose plans for the future went up in spoke the moment she caught her fiancé cheating. With her own plans upended, she gifts her destination wedding to a friend, and attends even though her heart is heavy. There, she meets Sebastian, who is also an attorney- and they have an immediate connection- soon the sparks fly. Barabara returns to New York, expecting to get a promotion that was all but promised to her- only to find the position has been given to someone else—- a newcomer to the firm – and to make matters worse the ‘new-hire’ just happens to be Sebastian – awkward much. When she is then fired, discriminatorily, Barbara embarks on a quest for justice.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Paulette Stout!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What Eyes Can’t See is a women’s fiction story in Paulette’s Bold Journeys series. Paulette is known for writing stories that are often outside people’s comfort zones. This contemporary fiction story is fast paced and filled with lots of emotions, betrayal, pain, angst, disgust, drama, steam and laughter and lots more.
This is a thought-provoking story is that of two people both Lawyers who grew up on different sides of the track. One with money and one without. One white and one black. One a woman and one a man. But two people who fight for justice.
Barbara’s journey takes us along as she tackles issues of infidelity, being a black woman in a high demanding role and family issues, multi-cultural relationships, courtroom drama, and racial discrimination. It’s a wonder she’s still standing but along this journey she grows in strength and self-worth.
Sebastian’s journey is just as hard as he has had to fight for everything including for his life. Now he finds himself in a position that no man in love should find themselves and has to once again fight for what he wants.
I like Paulette’s writing style and it is an interesting story that kept the pages keep turning.

Barbara’s fairytale life has hit a brick wall. Worst part, she didn’t see it coming.
Barbara navigates the NYC corporate world as a confident Black lawyer, balancing sky-high career goals with heavy family expectations. But while her career thrives at 31, her engagement crumbles, leaving her heartbroken – and stuck with a non-refundable destination wedding.
Arriving at her island paradise, Barbara is swept away by Sebastian – a hazel-eyed lawyer with a snake tattoo and a mysterious past. Their deep connection makes Barbara feel seen for the first time in her life.
For Sebastian, time stops when he’s with Barbara. It doesn’t matter that she’s rich, and he grew up on food stamps. That her clothes are designer and his hide old gang tattoos. Even that he’s white, and she’s Black. None of their differences matter until he’s handed the job meant for her.
Jobless and stripped of her family’s wealth, Barbara digs deep to find herself and her voice. Suspecting she faced racial discrimination, Barbara challenges her boss in court. It’s a decision that puts Barbara and Sebastian on opposite sides of a battle they long to fight together.
As their love and convictions are put to the test, one crucial question remains, how much are they willing to risk to find justice?
