Joanie is the strong female main character of this book. Through flashbacks you picked up that Joanie had a rough life growing up. She lost people who were very important to her. Those that were supposed to be there for her, were not, and would tend to make her life harder. The one thing that was always there for Joanie, was her job. She absolutely loved her job as an epidemiologist. She even was leading her own research, and the author did not skimp on any details in regards to this. Joanie’s knowledge on her research topic was very well explained to you. But one day her perfect job fell apart with a fire in her lab, losing everything. Yet another thing that would leave Joanie’s life. That disappointment did not stop there, soon after the fire, she lost her job, and her boyfriend, promises falling short.
A mystery appears, and you are sent on an adventure with Joanie and her friend to visit her recently inherited estate. There you learn more about Joanie’s life, and the mystery really begins, and so does the world of werewolves. Is there any correlation with her lab, the werewolves, and her grandfather? Does Joanie solve the mystery with the help of her friend, Lonna? With her recent broken heart, does someone sweep in and put it back together? Or does another heartbreak follow? Read this mystery/thriller to find out all the answers!
Wow, is the first word that comes to mind about this book written by Cecilia Dominic. With every page turned, Cecelia leaves you with a new twist or another clue to the ever-going mystery. Cecelia does not stop there as the author, she enthralls you into a whole different perspective of the werewolf world! This book was the new twist in the werewolf world I was looking for. At times the descriptions for each scene, thought, and conversation would get lengthy or maybe over explained. But, towards the end of the book that “over-description” weaved together and made complete sense, and ended up being important details that needed to be explained to bring the first book of the series to completion.
Although some of the details that I thought were “over-explained” some points did become a bit lengthy. I believe that is due to the fact that Cecilia had a lot of world building to do, since this is such a different twist to the werewolf world. The first couple of chapters seemed to really drag on and I had a hard time trying to get through those chapters. In some parts of the book the timing seemed to be very off. The way the author described scenes, the time seemed to only be a couple of hours, but you go to the next paragraph and it was a couple of days, or vice versa. Things also seemed to be missing parts in a scene, versus having a full description that would happen. Regardless of these flaws in this book, it was overall a great read. These flaws led me to want to rate this 4.5 out of 5 stars, but I cannot rate with half a star, so I gave the full 5 stars. I loved the different view and writing style of a werewolf book, and how much scientific knowledge she had and expressed throughout the book.
If you are looking for a twist to the werewolf world, a mystery, a thriller, with a pinch of romance, I would highly recommend this book. Or if you are looking for a way to pass time, or escape your daily life, I would still recommend this book!
