Heaven Only Knows was a really sad book. It started with a massive tragedy and ended with love. The characters felt real and the pain in their stories completely plausible. The tragic story of love lost and the deep pain it causes struck a chord in my heart. The inability to let go of the happiest memories of a person after their death all too real. Unconditional love was shown in many ways from Lou’s life choices after the death of Jacques to Barrett’s final declaration and grand gesture. The Louisiana swamp land feel was present, at least it felt that way to an outsider like me. The landmarks explored and true disasters Louisiana has faced added realness to the book that tethered reality to the fiction. The heartbreaking truth about what different families can look like and how hard it truly can be to see the side from the other point of view was captured. The familial love between siblings/parents and the fear attached to those cast aside by their own families a true testament to how people see the world in adulthood. Lou’s calm nature and desire to help others with compassion and communication derived from her own harrowing past.
