Five Tries To Get It Right by Kathryn Dodson. This is such a good family, drama, romance. Its the story of Lydia & Kate and they are both going thru a rough time in their lives. Lydia’s husband has passed away and her daughter has left to go on a trip so she feels all alone and lost. Kate has gone thru a divorce and finding out her husband’s new girlfriend is pregnant is the icing on the cake. Lydia & Kate have been friends for a long time so when Kate decides to end her life Lydia is by her side every step of the way. Once Kate is back on her feet they decide they need to go on a trip and get away for a while. While on their trip they have all kinds of adventure and fun. The friendship they share is truly beautiful and this story will stick with you for a long time.

Kris and the Cowboys is part of The Adventures of Kris Series. It is a children’s chapter book designed for kids between the ages of six to ten years of age. On her newest adventure young Kris is visiting her Uncle Buddy at his ranch. While visiting she learns about different breeds of horses, that horses eat oats raw, and that horses have big teeth. She also learns about ranch life and how to ride a horse. When Kris’ Uncle Buddy leaves for a cattle drive, she is determined to tag along even though her uncle does not feel she is ready yet. Determined to take part at all costs, Kris finds her own way of partaking in the cattle drive which soon takes her on a whirlwind adventure full of danger and mystery. She must find the strength and courage to overcome numerous challenges along the way such as flash floods, cattle rustlers, and even a hungry mountain lion. This was a delightful story within a story that teaches lessons in bravery, overcoming obstacles, the value of friendship, family values, and morals. I love that the MC Kris is an avid reader with a vivid imagination that finds herself fully immersed into the worlds she reads about in her books. A great series for kids of all ages.

This is a super cute story for beginning chapter readers. I wasn’t sure what to expect coming into a series at book three, however; I was so amazed at how much character depth there was. I felt like I didn’t miss anything starting with this book. That said, I know that there will be some additional information in the earlier books but it doesn’t give the reader that feeling. I think that the words in the book will be easy for age group of 6-10. Okay, maybe 6 with some adult help. I also feel that the story is engaging so it will make even the most reluctant readers want to continue with the series. It is hard to find a book let a lone a series that will keep the kids wanting to follow along in the adventures. This is a quick read for more advanced readers but it also allows those just starting to find their footing in reading the ability to feel accomplished when finishing a chapter book. The kids will want to keep up with Kris and will be excited about the next adventure.

This is the third book in the series and is another great addition. It was great to get back into these characters, my kids are really starting to grow attached and become invested. They enjoy reading more about the characters and the stories are always so interesting.
The story this time was about a missing cow and we all really enjoyed watching as Kris tried to find it, and the suspected cowboy. The illustrations brought the book to life and made it even more enjoyable. This is a great book that the whole family have loved to read.

Another adventure with Kris? Yes please! These beginner chapter books are a lot of fun for my 7yo son and I to read together. They are always well written, and detailed in a way that’s easy for kids to follow along and to get lost in. This is a series, however, each book can stand alone and you won’t feel like you’re missing anything.
This story follows Kris as she is dropped off at her Uncle’s ranch. She learns all about ranch life – riding a horse, working on the ranch, etc. Until it’s time for the cattle drive. Her uncle does not think she is ready for something that can be dangerous. Will that stop Kris? Of course not! She finds her own way and goes on an epic cattle drive adventure! There is so much that happens, it is sure to keep any kid (or kid at heart) entertained.

Five Tries to Get It Right by Kathryn Dodson

Five Tries to Get It Right is a wonderfully written Women’s Fiction/ Adventure that takes us on quite the emotional journey. This book hit very close to home on so many different levels. I’ve recently had some pretty big life changes and honestly couldn’t have gotten through them without my best friend by my side. This is a heartwarming story that has a fair mix of drama, love, loss, second chances, grief, heartache and so much more. I truly enjoyed reading this book and literally had to have kleenex near by. It’s really hit home and I’m here to tell you this is totally worth the read. I highly recommend reading this book and I must say this is definitely my favorite yet. I’m looking forward to reading more from this Author.

Kris & The Cowboys (The Adventures of Kris) by Art Blegen. This is such a fun series and your young chapter readers will love it. They are geared toward 6 to 10 year old and they make great gifts. In this story Kris visits her Uncle on his cattle ranch and when he won’t allow her to go along with them on a real cattle drive she invents one in her imagination and what an imagination she has. On her cattle drive a cow and cowboy turn up missing making them think he is a rustler and must be hunted down. There are mountain lions, thievery and more in this fun story. Your young new chapter readers will love it. It would also make a great family gift or teacher gift to read to the classroom!

We were excited for this release, we couldn’t wait to start reading it. We were new to this author, Art Blegen, but the little ones and I really enjoyed reading about the different adventures that Kris goes on. Just like the other ones they are chapter books that are quick, fun, and easy to read. We read ours during our reading time, took us like three days ( but probably will take less time for you. We read a certain amount each day) 😀 only about 14 chapters in all. Art Blegen storytelling is super creative and amazingly captivating. In this one Kris visits her Uncle Buddy at his ranch. Where she learns new talents, and goes on an adventure where she meets new friends and new dangers.
We Cannot wait until the next book Kris and the Astronauts is released!!

This book offers such an incredible story of friendship that preservers throughout the years. It offers the perfect insight into two best friends navigating their way through life and how they find the strength to face everything. This book resonated with me on a level I did not expect. It felt so relatable to my own life and the things that I might have to face moving forwards.
The author has created a story that is appealing and so easy to connect with. It was a well written story that explored the lives of two women and made me feel hope about what the future could hold in the second part of my own life. This is a great story and I really enjoyed this so much more than I expected.

Having lost my mother to suicide this one hit close to home ….,

So Kate was married and her husband left her , got remarried and his now wife is pregnant 🙈to add insult to injury the shareholders of company she started decided to vote her out and she just feels life has no meaning , she’s given up and decided to end it but fortunately for she gets to the hospital on time …….

Kate and Lydia have been friends since childhood and she heads to the hospital to encourage he friend and is met with sone resistance from Kate and my heart goes out to her as she’s just lost her husband and I’ll be honest he was a bit of a deadbeat but still her husband nonetheless and her daughter just wants to escape her ( I thinks she’s being a little bratty )

Lydia has always been frugal so when she convinces Kate to revisit all the countries they travelled as youngsters Kate insists on going big and No expense is to be spared….

This was their second chance and there were times where I had no hope for Kate and her mindset but there’s always little rays of hope shining through the darkness and Lydia just wants someone to love . She has a few tough decisions to make along the way and again I can feel her mixed emotions 😉

I wasn’t all doom and gloom there were times I laughed out loud with them , I made memories with them and I relieved old memories with them , it was a privilege to part of their journey both present and past 🤗

These woman are so relatable and I could identify with both for different reasons and their travels were rich and informative 🥰this is one if those reads I just want all my girlfriends to read and one I will be rereading again ❣️📚

I have really enjoyed reading these adventures of Kris! She’s a pretty cool young lady who has a very vivid imagination. When her uncle won’t let her go on a cattle drive, she imagines one! What a fun adventure she has involving a mountain lion, a rustler, and more.

This book is geared towards readers 6-10 years of age but I truly believe that any age group can have an appreciation for this fun adventure story!

Kris & The Cowboys is Book 3 in The Adventures of Kris series full of fun and adventure at every corner. This story chapter book is for ages 6-10 and perfect for any beginner reader who is ready to start reading chapter books….or even for the young at heart to enjoy.

As we follow Kris, who is at a ranch with her father and great uncle….Kris wants to learn how to ride a horse. Of course her great uncle is ready to teach Kris each step as it is learning process from the saddle, reins and even how to get on a horse properly. Kris is anxious to accompany her great uncle on her first cattle drive, but she has much to learn and must stay at the ranch. When a cow names Patches goes missing, it is up to Kris to be brave and try and help find the missing cow.

Saddle up for an adventure Kris is with her horse, Apples, and on the way to help find a missing cow meeting new friends, find friendships that help her in dangerous situations and being brave when a flood hits the encampment area. Will Kris be able to rescue Patches…definitely read and find out.

This is a fun book and I really enjoy every story so far in this series and already looking forward to more. I love being pulled into an adventure of this story

Lydia and Kate are two very different individuals, and lead very different lives- which often seems to be the case between true best friends. When both of their lives seem to be in different layers of complete shambles, they join together for support and embark on what they hope to be a soul healing adventure. But things do not go quite as they had initially planned.

Five Tries to Get it Right by Kathryn Dodson was my second book by this author. And while I knew I enjoyed reading her work, I still did not expect to love this story as much as I did! I loved and resonated with both of the main characters. What they were going through are such realistic feelings and tribulations for so many women entering into the second half of their lives. I am very pleased I chose to read another of her books, and I will continue to do so every chance I get!

Five Tries to Get It Right by Kathryn Dodson is a heartachingly great women’s fiction story, that comes with an emotional wallop, friendship, sisterhood, heartbreak, grief, personal challenges, 2nd chances, love, travel, drama, angst, hope, and learning to ‘live again’ after loss. The story also touches on some sensitive topics which the author wrote with much heart and soul.
These two women, Lydia and Kate, are such complex characters- lovingly crafted with their own unique personalities, quirks, and flaws. Their bond of friendship/sisterhood spans time and brings them together in this poignant tale. One of Ms. Dodson’s best yet!
Well worth the read…
Looking forward to seeing what Ms. Dodson has in store for us next.

This is the third installment of The Adventures of Kris series, and what a grand adventure it has been! This has been a really cool series so far, and both of my kids have loved it. The amount of creativity and imagination here is truly inspiring. It creates so much fun while you read, especially if you’re reading with kiddos. Kris is such an amazing character who has strong morals and values. I loved getting to read about horses, the Sioux tribe, and a flood because the author wove everything together so naturally. I know this book is aimed toward a younger crowd, but I enjoyed it so much! The characters feel very well developed for a children’s book which was refreshing. I’m excited to see what’s next!

This may be my favorite of the Kris stories so far. This time Kris goes to visit her uncle on a ranch. While there she learns how to ride a horse and be a real cowgirl. She is sad that she doesn’t get to go on the cattle drive with her uncle but she immerses herself in her books and learns about horses and even Indians, until her uncle returns. I just love how these stories involve a young (ish) kid that loves reading and uses their imagination. It shows how books can take you all sorts of places at any age. These are great stories for read aloud time or for kids (maybe age 6-10) that are just starting to read chapter books. There’s a few illustrations spread throughout the book which I also love. Definitely recommend these stories

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book it is as heartbreaking as it is heartwarming. The characters are well developed and yet complex. Broken hearts and reunited friendships that lead to traveling together to try to heal but will it be enough. Some heart breaks are tough to get over. Just when all seems hopeless a bright and shining star finds a way to break down all the walls.
Five Tries to Get It Right is a beautiful and haunting tale. A story of beautiful friendships, sisterhood, heartbreaking loss, love, betrayal, grief and mental illness just to name a few. It was easy to relate to Kate having dealings with mental health myself. It is a story that shows how resilient and strong women can be when all is said and done even if they don’t feel like it. Letting go of the past is sometimes easier said than done.
The story is vividly rich in its telling and well written. It is one that should not be missed.

This is the first book by this author that I have read and thoroughly enjoyed it. I usually don’t read books that aren’t strictly romance or mystery but I think I will after this one. Can’t wait to read more by this author as well. Once you start reading the story just draws you in and keeps you wondering what will happen next.

Lydia and Kate have been friends for a long time. Both are at a rough time in their life. Lydia’s husband died and her daughter left home to take a trip. Kate and her husband got a divorce and then she finds out he has gotten the other woman pregnant. She had started a business from scratch and was doing quite well with it until she decided to take it Public. Then the Board of Directors voted her out of the Company and made her a billionaire.

When Kate attempted suicide and decided to give up on life, Lydia was by her side every step of the way trying to get her friend to feel better. They decided they both needed to get away and take a trip. They picked five places they went before when they were younger to revisit and decide what they were going to do with their lives from this point on.

What a beautiful piece of women’s fiction. This story brought out all the feels. Dealing with a life crisis brought these two back together. In dealing with the aftermath, they decide to take a trip like they did in their 20’s. The ensuing discussions and talks have them working through their life and the issues they each have. The writing is so descriptive. You feel it as you read it. I could empathize with some of the issues. The characters were each unique. That ending was a surprise. This is a story that I highly recommend if you love women’s fiction. It’s a must read.

Kathryn Dodson grew up writing and riding horses in far West Texas. She graduated from SMU in English/Creative Writing and went on to get an MBA from Thunderbird and a PhD from Clemson. Now she spends her days writing about women who become their own heroes.

She has worked on both sides of the US/Mexico border and has held jobs with governments, chambers of commerce, and other businesses. Kathryn loves to travel and has visited 30 countries and 44 states. This inspires her novels about interesting women in fascinating places.

Originally from Texas, Kathryn had the good fortune to live in Spain, Mexico, Tanzania, and several U.S. states, and the good sense to end up in Carlsbad, California. She loves travel, fiery food, hanging out with the neighbors in the front yard on Friday evenings, and reading.

War in Sorcery’s Shadow by Elise Carlson is the 3rd and final book in the series. Although geared towards YA, it definitely appeals to an older audience as well. LGBTQ+
The 3rd book is a little slow to start off and it did take me a bit to get into it, more so than the others. Once it did pick up, however, it was hard to put down! Multiple POVs provide an interesting view point on a scene, which was really cool to see. Several chapters were technically the same event or part of the timeline, but different POV . Without spoilers, there were some twists that I did not expect (which I always enjoy) and I absolutely recommend it.

What another fun read from Art Blegen. Kris and her dad travel to his Uncle Buddy’s farm. Disappointed that she isn’t able to join him on the upcoming cattle drive, Kris imagines her own adventure with Buddy, her horse Apples, and the little cow Patches. From an encounter with Indians to a dangerous flood this book, like previous ones with Kris, are full of adventure.

The cover kind of threw me off, I expected Kris to be a little older, but she spoke like a very young child. I’ve not read any of the other books so I’m not sure if her age is mentioned previously. Ignoring the cover, the story is great. I like that it teaches readers a little about riding horses in the beginning. I enjoyed Kris’s imaginative story about her and Buddy rescuing a cow. She meets some great characters, I really liked Jim the gold miner. I feel this story is great for horse lovers and young readers starting to read chapter books.

This is a really cute story about Kris who wants to be a cowboy and go on a cattle drive. She runs into all sorts of adventures. This is a great book for the younger generation.

All of my grandchildren are teenagers so I am not sure if they would find it very interesting. But I have a few friends and some other grandchildren on the way that may find this book very interesting. Check it out and see what you think

Full of rustlers, Indians, horses, high stakes, a hungry mountain lion, a missing cow and more.

Mr. Blegen always manages to come up with fun, new adventures for Kris to get swept into- and this one finds her on a cattle drive that will challenge her along the way. It’s a wonderfully vivid story which is easy to understand, and easy to read. Another well written, and imaginative story which is accompanied by some small (B + W) illustrations (heading up each chapter) that also help to bring the story to life.
Kris’s love of reading, along with her very vivid imagination means that she finds an ‘adventure’ wherever she goes. This story starts with her father dropping her off at Uncle Buddy’s ranch where Kris learns to ride a horse, and learns about a ‘working’ ranch and ranch life. When Uncle Buddy sets off on a cattle drive, Kris is determined to tag along- but Uncle Buddy doesn’t think she’s experienced enough just yet. But, Kris finds her own way of getting on a cattle drive- and is soon swept into an adventure with mystery, high stakes, rustlers, a missing cow, Indians, a hungry mountain lion, a flash flood that sweeps through the canyon they are travelling through, danger, dramatic developments, challenges, thinking ‘on your feet’, overcoming obstacles, a rescue, new friendships, family, and more. What happens makes for a great little read.
Each instalment in the series could be read as a standalone, as each has its own fully contained adventure, starring Kris. So there’s absolutely no worry that you might end up feeling like you are ‘missing’ anything that occurred in the previous books which might affect this story. But, having said that, Kris finds herself in lots of interesting situations that results in fun adventures- which you will definitely want to be part of….

Kris & The Cowboys is the third book in The Adventures of Kris series by Art Blegen. It is a colourful and imaginative chapter book adventure story. It is appropriately aimed at children from six to ten years old.
This delightful children’s story is fun and is vividly rich in its story telling. It brings delight to young minds as their imagination puts them into the story along with Kris. It’s not just a story as there are things to learn along the way.
Follow along as Kris is out in the beautiful countryside where things are not what they seem. With Cowboys, Indians, horses, cattle rustlers and much, much more there is something for everyone.

“Kris and the Cowboys” by Art Blegen is a captivating tale that will transport young readers to the Wild West. The story follows Kris, a brave and resourceful protagonist, as she embarks on a cattle drive with a group of cowboys across the beautiful American landscape.

The adventure begins with a mystery: a cow has gone missing, along with one of the cowboys, Bart. Kris and the others are convinced that Bart is a rustler, and they set out to retrieve the stolen cow and bring the culprit to justice. However, their journey is fraught with challenges, including encounters with Indians, wild animals, and a devastating flood. I personally felt it was too many events that are farfetched in one short day in Kris’s life, but this is fiction!

One of the standout aspects of “Kris and the Cowboys” is its well-developed characters. Kris is a relatable and inspiring protagonist, while the other cowboys add depth and humor to the story. The supporting characters, including Bart and the tribe’s leader, are also well-written and add richness to the narrative.

This was a neat story. Kris has a fun imagination. Her great-uncle won’t let her go on the cattle drive so she dives into a story about cowboys and off she goes on a fantastic imaginative journey. I love her courage to do whatever anyone else does. She’ll do what the adults don’t. She does a brave act to rescue Patches. The characters are quite interesting, and the story keeps kids engaged. My grandchildren enjoyed hearing this at storytime. I do hope we might get some more Kris adventures down the road.
