My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was my first book by Gloria Oliver and it did not disappointment! I’m not normally a sci-fi fan, but the blurb intrigued me so I gave it a shot. The main character, Claudia, has a secret past that she is trying to put behind her so she can move on with her life and get a new job. She finally finds one and her boss, Bennett, is constantly holding her past over head to get her to do whatever he wants. These are usually not things she wants to do, but she is terrified of her past getting out. From the get go she feels like an outsider and wants to fit in. She is then brought on a mission. I don’t want to spoil the book so you can enjoy it as much as I did. Can’t wait to read more by Ms Gloria!

To be quite honest i don’t know where to start with, reviewing this masterpiece. From the very start, Claudia’s journey will just blow you out of the water and keep you absolutely hooked. So much so that I sat down with this book, and did not get up again until i had finished it. This story is just full to the brim with excitement, sadness, betrayal, anger, all of it and it’s amazing! Gloria put this together just beautifully, and i couldn’t have adored it more. I’m really hoping i’ll get to read more of Claudia’s adventures in the future!

I wasn’t sure if I would like this book when I first started reading it. But soon enough I found a new Sci-fi book that I ended up really enjoying. The author does a wonderful job of world and character building. I was able to connect with Claudia, who is trying to find a way to get past a mistake, but finds herself in a difficult situation. Once she discovers that her Captain has plans for the new species that is found on a planet, Claudia tries her best to help the new species.

I am happy to have found this story by Gloria Oliver. I’m looking forward to reading more stories by this author.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Claudia Zimmerman is a former medical researcher who was blamed by her employers in a very public arena. She is now blacklisted amongst both her peers and, well…everyone else, too. Her funds are running low, she’s feeling desperate, and she doesn’t know what else to do besides become someone else. So, Claudia becomes Aya and applies for a medical job aboard a merchant vessel. She expects to get the job without trouble, and is shocked to find the captain of the vessel recognizes her and blackmails her into joining the crew.

Captain Bennet assigns her to the medical bay of his dilapidated ship, and she tries to stay out of his way as his temper and behavior is absolutely atrocious – a cruel and dangerous man. He punishes crew members on a whim. Before she knows it, Claudia is assigned to an mission aboard an uncharted planet where they discover an intelligent avian species. She is excited to work with them and then discovers that Captain Bennet has plans to utilize the new species as servants, and Claudia has seen up close and personal just how he treats those around him. She can’t stand the idea of the Avians being subjected to his brutal abuse and desires to save them, even though it will bring her the attention she’s been trying hard to avoid.

There is assault in this book, and a lot of terrible treatment. Some people are likely sensitive to some of the things described. SciFi novels aren’t usually my “thing”, and it was difficult to get through the assault, but this book did draw me in and have me rooting for Claudia. I was often on the edge of my seat and bouncing between emotions. Will Claudia keep herself and the Avians safe, or will Captain Bennet beat his way to the top?

Alien Redemption by Gloria Oliver. This is a great sci fi adventure read about a girl named Claudia who has been judged by her past. The people around her shun her so she disguises herself. She thought she had a good cover but when she applies for a job the Captain of the ship recognizes her and uses that information to blackmail her. The Captain knew she was overqualified so that’s why he blackmailed her. Claudia has to fight the crew and she can never really rest because she never knows when someone is going to try to kill her. She can’t trust anyone so she feels completely alone. The Captain is so dirty and she knows its in her best interest to avoid him at all costs. When talks of a secret mission start and they end up in an unchartered system called the Fringes and they find intelligent life which the Captain plans to use for his benefit. Can Claudia stop him from making the new life species he’s found be servants for the rest of their lives? Read this great sci fi read to find out!

The Befallen by Cambria Williams was great! Not what I expected and I really enjoyed it. No spoilers, but I did love how the romance was not the typical kind you get in books. Great character development and world building, main character growth throughout, and very hard book to put down. Absolutely would recommend if you’re looking for something different and don’t want to get caught up in a series.

Alien Redemption by Gloria Oliver- 5 out of 5 stars

An interesting Sci-Fi deep space novel. Trigger Warning, there are parts in the novel that can be very triggering! A very well written second book from this author. It was suspenseful, edgy, fast-paced but well rounded, dare I say, it was a satisfying read. I will honestly say that I did not expect much going into this book but I am glad that I gave it a chance and stuck through the hard parts. I highly recommend this book!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the fifth book in the Jake Wolfe Thrillers Series, and it has made itself a staple in my library. I get tremendously excited when I hear there is another book in the series coming out. The amount of times Jake and Cody have saved others increases with each book, but have they met their match? This threat is the biggest yet, and it just seems like they are up against insurmountable odds. Full of suspense, danger, and twists around each chapter, you’ll find yourself struggling to put this book down just so you can find out what happens next. I do enjoy that the author brings in characters from past books in the series, but you can still read this as a standalone. You’ll run to pick up the rest of the series once you read one!

“All Claudia wanted to do was escape the mistakes of the past and start over. But when she answers an ad for a medical officer on a merchant ship in the Fringes, the captain recognizes her and blackmails her into taking the job. She finds out that not only can Captain Bennet not pass up a bargain, neither will he allow morals to hold him back from climbing the power ladder at the borders of the Dominion. Can Claudia stop the impending exploitation of a newly discovered sentient species all on her own?”

Alien Redemption by Gloria Oliver is a great, twisty, sci-fi adventure story with plenty of suspense, tension, drama, action, secrets, mystery, agendas/plots, high stakes, blackmail, betrayal, intrigue, emotion, discovery, challenges, space travel, new beginnings, and aliens.
I was pulled into the story right from the beginning- reading the book in one sitting as I really needed to know how things would play out. There were twisty moments where I wasn’t sure where the story was headed, but in a great way- it had me avidly reading to find out what would happen next. I was invested in Claudia (‘Z’) right from the get-go, I really felt for her and the circumstances she found herself in- and was rooting for her the whole way through (and her new ‘friends’). Some of the characters made me angry- Captain Bennet in particular, and spent a considerable amount of time plotting Claudia’s revenge along the way. All in all- this turned out to be an intriguing and engrossing sci-fi story…
Looking forward to whatever Ms. Oliver does next- hopefully more of ‘The Discoveries of Julia Xero’ series- but I know whatever she does will make for a fantastic read!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Gloria Oliver!

This book was so much better than I thought it would be when I started reading, and I got into it straight away. I thought the story was really interesting and had a lot about it. The start really made me sit up and pay attention and after that I could not wait to see where the story would go.
I loved the main character as well. She has such a dark past that she is trying to get away from, yet her strength and fight is obvious to see. For me, she definitely added so much more to the story. This is a fantastic story that I really enjoyed and would highly recommend.

Alien Redemption by Gloria Oliver is a sci fi story set in deep space. I have only read one other book that Gloria has written, and I enjoyed it immensely as I did with this book. Emotions run high in this story making it feel like you have run a marathon.
Gloria’s has once again cleverly woven together complex threads in a multi layered story. Her world-building is done well, and the plot is intriguing in a story that has something for everyone that likes a good sci fi story.
With a new identity, intelligent humanoid species, first contact, uncharted planets, blackmail, shocking betrayal, and sinister plots Gloria has written a tale where the pages keep turning desperate to find out how it will end.
The story is fast paced, and action packed and full of suspense, tension, frustration, fear, desperation, aliens, secrets, mystery and more.
Gloria’s narrative and a few twists and turns makes it easy to become intrigued with the characters and their journey.
Claudia is overqualified and needs a new start in life but that new start doesn’t turn out how she thought it would. Things go from bad to worse and she wonders just what she has gotten herself into.
I look forward to reading more.

I found this story to be absolutely fascinating. Claudia has a past and is trying to stay on the down-low. She applies for the only job she can and winds up on ship of low-lifes, except for the first mate. The captain is a real piece of work. I loved how Claudia worked to redeem herself, which wasn’t easy on that ship. Claudia turned out to be a strong character who just wanted to do what’s right. I have to applaud her. It’s a good book that had me engaged right from the start. There’s a lot of action, a bit of romance, and some suspense. It’s one I recommend.

This is a quick read that is a military story. I was pulled right into this story by the character of Sarge. This is related to the Story of Misson 3047, which I have not read, but I definitely will be adding to my TBR list. Sarge is a fantastic character who sucks you in from page one. I was highly invested into Sarge/TJ and wanted to see what would happen to him. This book shows the impact that one person can have on another. This was honestly a great read that I recommend!

Every once in a while an author creates a character that I find myself consistently wanting to read more of. Mark Nolan created this in the character is Jake Wolfe. I am so excited everytime I see that there is a new Jake Wolfe book for me to read. I know that it will be a book that sucks me in and sends me on a fast paced suspenseful ride. This story definitely ups the suspense factor as it seems so much more realistic than some of his past books. Not that any of the others were far fetched but I think it is really because the story hits so close to home for me. This is book 5 in the series, but each and every book so far would be able to be read as a standalone. But I definitely recommend you read each of the series as you will be entered into the world of Jake Wolfe.

Threads of Time (Toronto Time Agents Series) by C. N. Jackson – Review by Ayla Phipps

Threads of TimeThreads of Time by Christy Nicholas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

History and mystery. This is the second book in the Toronto Time Agents series but is the first book I have read by this author. I had no trouble keeping track with the story as each book seems to be a standalone plot. It was a very interesting read for a rainy day before my boys got out of school for thanksgiving break.
Wilda Firestone has decades of experience being a Temporal Agent but her time on the force is done she is ready to retire and just enjoy her passion for making period appropriate clothing for travelers. Only Pembley, her boss, has decided that he will give her what she wants to meet an ancestor from the 1800s if she begins training new agents. While the agreement is suspicious, she agrees, Sir Algernon was once a policeman but now wants to be a Temporal Agent and is Wilda’s trainee, before they can go on their mission an explosion happens in the Agency for Time Tourism next door to her workshop/store. Her curiosity spikes when along with her anger over her life’s work being destroyed in the attack. With the only time machine in Canada reduced to ashes they must find another way to complete their mission. Only things change and the mission along with it. They are no longer on a strictly training mission they are on the hunt for terrorists that have taken everything away from her. What they find is not what they expected as they search for the answers to repair the time stream.
Why was the time machine targeted? Will Wilda make it in time to stop the terrorists? What has happened and how deep does it go? The world C.N. Jackson has melded together is one of intrigue, mystery, and suspense as you’re sucked back in time with Wilda on the hunt for the answers. I couldn’t help myself from getting wrapped up in the questions, rushing from page to page in search of the answers with her. This book shows history without blinders, no false illusions of how the times were and what was or wasn’t acceptable its truth which builds the world more with each turning page. Wilda is a force to be reckoned with and she will find her answers no matter when and where. I can’t wait for book three, Unraveling Brigid’s Veil October 24th, 2024, to see what Wilda faces next.

Threads of Time: A Historical Time Travel Adventure (Toronto Time Agents)Threads of Time: A Historical Time Travel Adventure by C. N. Jackson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An enjoyable and engaging historical time travel adventure which kept me hooked throughout. Seasoned retiree Wilda Firestone is training her slightly clueless protégé, and so is determined to not be tempted by the thrill of time-traveling again. However, following a bomb the time machine next door is burnt to ashes and her life’s work is in rubble, and so she takes on a dangerous investigation. Although Wilda has scars from past battles during her time-hopping days, she convinces her trainee to time hop to 1850’s France. Here they must lure the terrorists out of the shadows, but their time machine malfunctions, and they end up hundreds of miles away. This leads Wilda to think that something is seriously ‘out of whack’ in the time stream. She must then unravel the mystery before its too late. This is a fun and exciting “romp through history”, with quirky characters and an intriguing storyline. The setting is brought vividly to life by the descriptive narrative, and the author also brings the era they travel to, to life through the added historical details. I would personally recommend reading the books in order, as the characters crossover and their backstories have obviously been explained in the previous book.

DEADLY WEAPON (Jake Wolfe Book 5) by Mark Nolan – Review by Amanda Swindle

Deadly Weapon (Jake Wolfe, #5)Deadly Weapon by Mark Nolan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Deadly Weapon is the fifth book in the Jake Wolfe Thriller series and can be read as a stand alone. Reading the previous books does help with the character development but is not necessary for the story and plot line. Action, danger, and trouble seems to follow Jake and his ex-war dog, Cody and this time is no different. Deadly Weapon focuses on something we have all recently dealt with…a global pandemic of a deadly virus. Now Jake and his beloved sidekick/dog must get to the bottom of who/what has caused the spread, and ultimately get it stopped before things get worse. I did like this one more than the previous ones as it was somewhat relatable and had a lot of issues we face going on in it. That being said, what can Jake NOT do? He has done so much in just five books, and keeps changing careers and gets his hands dirty in everything he does. I like the action and danger, but it becomes unbelievable and makes me lose the immersion that I love in a book. Still a great read and plenty of people will love this series for the fast paced craziness that always happens. I still adore Cody most of all, he is such a loyal and clever companion and always knows just what to do! I will continue the series to see what other trouble these two can get into next.

I don’t typically pick up books in this genre, but something about this one pulled me in. I’m so glad I listened to that little voice because even though this is the only second book I’ve read by this author, something tells me it is far from the last. I enjoyed Mark Sutherland’s cross-country adventure and how the author so vividly portrays the locations he ventures into. I felt pulled into the story to the point where it felt more like an experience which I absolutely loved. Mark is a relatable character that you feel like rooting for the whole way through his journey and the flow of the story itself is quite smooth. Get ready for a fast-paced historical adventure where you’ll read about a bit of danger, a few friends, and the ever-famous gold rush! I highly recommend picking this up and getting wrapped up in the twists and turns that is Mr. Sutherland’s life.
