Slow Burn by A.K. Macbride – Review by Rosanna Ingram

Slow Burn (Breathing Hearts, #2)Slow Burn by A.K. MacBride
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Maddie returns home after her dream of becoming a professional dancer is put on hold. One good thing about moving home to her small town is the view…especially of the neighbor next door. Too bad he has a grumpy attitude to go with those gorgeous looks. Maybe she can turn his frown upside down…

Adam moves to a small town to escape the memories of the past and try to heal. He is weighed down by immense guilt for failing to save his wife. He just wants to live in solitude…but his neighbor’s dog seems to have other ideas.

These two are amazing characters. They are both overcoming different obstacles in their lives. Maddie wants to find the good in Adam…because she sees it…but Adam is determined to keep her away. Thank goodness for her meddling dog! You can feel the emotions come off the pages for both of them and it makes for a beautiful story.

Slow Burn (Breathing Hearts, #2)Slow Burn by A.K. MacBride
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a great 5 star read, I was pulled right in from the beginning.

Maddie has been sneaking peeks at her new neighbor and she finally gets the nerve to approach him and lets just say he was not very receptive, she quickly retreated back to her home. There is something about Maddie that Adam finds soothing and he enjoys secretly watching her dance on the beach. Her fugly dog has also been sneaking over to his house and seems to be growing on him. As the story moves forward they start to grow closer, with little hiccups here and there.

Both Maddie and Adam have things that they are dealing with personally. They seem to have a connection and being together helps ease some of the stress.
Will Maddie get past her issues and finally get her dream job? Will Adam be able to get past his issues and open up to Maddie?

Overall this was a great read. I loved all of the characters, especially the dog. I loved Maddie and her strength, her thoughts about Adam had me LOL at times. We get a bonus chapter at the end along with a sneak peek at the next book in the series. The author does a great job with her writing and I can’t wait to read the next book. 1-click and get started today.

First timer read with this author and this was a great starter!! Adam and Maddie are a couple you root for, and can easily imagine. Maddie is the sweet girl next door who is the good friend and ever loyal supporter. She always sees the good. When Adam moves in next door you can easily describe him as brooding, sexy, and mysterious. While Adam wears a façade wanting to be hidden he finds that wont work with Maddie. As Maddie wears him down they start a slow descent into love, and its a beautiful journey. When something is meant to there wont be anything to hold you back.

Nothing quite like an enemies to lovers romance to round out the summer with! A.K. Macbride does a wonderful job at painting a picture of what trauma does to people and how it affects relationships, specifically the one between Maddie and Adam in this novel.

This author is new to me, but this will not be the last book I will read by them! Now that I’ve read this one I plan to go back and read Instant Heat, but in reading this I did not find it necessary that I needed to read that book first, which was a plus! There are definitely a lot of unanswered questions that I have about both characters after reading this book, particularly addressing the family issues in Maddie’s life. Can’t wait to read more!

Slow Burn by A.K. Macbride is an intense and emotional roller coaster ride of a story. This story has everything that an avid romance reader needs, from a brooding man who thinks he doesn’t deserve love, to a girl that proves he does, crazy and intense chemistry, and some funny moments to make the story not to heavy. The characters are amazing, the plot leaves me wanting more, and the authors word building leaves me not being able to wait to read more by this author.

The title says it all. Really. I was hooked from the second that Maddie and Adam met. A tattooed grumpy as all hell neighbor? This book was phenomenal, sexy, infuriating and a page turner that didn’t disappoint right to the very end! A.K. Macbride is a new author for me and this won’t be our last!!!

Fantastic story! This is my first book that I read from Author A.K. MacBride and I love this slow burn of a romance. The is the story of Maddie and Adam that is truly an emotional roller coaster. I believe they both do not feel like they deserve love. Maddie is a dancer, but ends up working for her parents hardware store and they are not in full support of Maddie as a dancer. When Maddie is left a beachfront cottage by her grandmother, this is where she meets Adam. He is rude, grumpy, yes full of pain, but when you find out Adam’s story, you have all these feels why. You really root for these two characters and their story. Highly recommended if you love a contemporary romance with a small town feel. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I am a HUGE fan of small town, enemies to lovers, contemporary romance reads!! Slow Burn has got to be by far one of my FAVORITE reads of the year!! This is book two in it’s series, so upset with myself for reading out of sync, so I most certainly will be reading all books in series. I literally could NOT set this story aside when I started reading! I just had to read it ALL, as I really really loved this author’s style! Eager to read more of her work as well!

What better way to describe this compelling novel than Slow Burn! I enjoyed reading this novel- ranging from Adam’s struggle with seeing past his scars (not only physically but internally) to Maddie trying to get her parents to come to terms with her career in dancing. When their worlds collide, sparks fly, and they embark on a journey of romance, love, and hope. This novel proves that sometimes we need to look past the surface of one’s façade to find the person truly worth loving.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This enemies to lovers romance had me hooked from start to finish. I loved the main characters, grumpy Adam and bubbly Maddie and enjoyed seeing how their relationship changed and developed throughout the story. Maddie is instantly attracted to her new neighbour Adam after all he’s tall, muscular and has tats, but then he opens his mouth and she discovers that he is also rude and obnoxious. However, despite Adams poor first impression Maddie believes that there is more to him and that he’s hiding a past pain. The storyline flowed well and the descriptive narrative bought both the setting and the characters to life making this an engaging read. I was taken on an emotional rollercoaster whilst reading this as the story had both sad moments, tragic moments and then laugh out loud moments along with plenty of romance. I found myself still thinking about Adam and Maddie long after I had put the book down, which for me is always a sign of a good read.

This was a great one – – I personally enjoy the ‘enemies to lovers’ story line. In Slow Burn there was nice character development and they had relatable, real-world issues to work through. I think I read this in two short sittings, and it has enough steam and intrigue to keep the reader engaged but it’s not overly explicit. In the end you’re rooting for Adam and Maddie to end up together but the author makes you wait right up until the end to reveal if they will or not. I’d read more from A.K. MacBride!

Slow Burn (Breathing Hearts, #2)Slow Burn by A.K. MacBride
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a delicious slow-burn. There is something to be said for going slow instead of quick and fast all the time. This one delivers it all in spades. We really get to know the characters and their wants and needs. Adam is quite the guy. At first I loved to dislike him but slowly..oh so slowly he turned a corner as I changed my opinion about him. He is a grump and kinda mean. By the end he is a hot dreamboat. There is one scene in here that I highlighted because I loved it so much. Sadly its near the end so I can’t say anything because I don’t want to give anything away. But let’s just say..my heartbeat picked up as I held my breath. Madison is wonderful. She has challenges that are different from Adam’s but I still enjoyed all her turmoil, tears and smiles.

Secondary characters are super. First off can a dog be a character? Sheldon has a smallish part but its a instrumental in the story. Frankie is a great character. Supportive and there for her bestie. I see her story is next and I am excited. There are parents, friends and family that all help these two try to get together.

Overall this is a wonderful read. The suspense of will they or won’t they drove me crazy! Heck even that first kiss! Yowza! I loved seeing the growth of these two and I look forward to more.
The title of this series (Breathing Hearts) fits perfectly.

Slow Burn: An Enemies to Lovers Romance (Breathing Hearts #2) by A.K. MacBride

This is the first book I’ve read by MacBride. This is the second book in the Breathing Hearts Series. It can be read as a standalone.

Adam has his own past that he is dealing with. He doesn’t want to be friendly towards anyone, especially his neighbor. That changes when he finds her dancing on the beach one morning. The quote I chose for Adam is: “Take your damn rat and go away.”

Madison or Maddie has always loved dancing. Her parents were never on board and compared her to her sister. Little did she know the reasoning behind why her dad was so against it. Her neighbor is not friendly but she makes her way under his skin. The quote I chose for Maddie is: “Remember how I told you about Lucetta and the dance studio? Well, I have the opportunity to make it mine. So, this morning when I said I was going to see my parents, it was to ask them to help me.”

Highly recommended for Romantic Comedy lovers.

I really enjoyed this book! Maddie and Adam had incredible chemistry. I want to go read the first book in the series as well as look up Zoe’s story.

Maddie has a heart of gold and a spine of steel. She is dealing with a lot and has protected herself, but does it without putting anyone else down to do it. Adam is dealing with incredible trauma and has pushed away everyone close to him. My heart hurt so much for him, and watching him heal was awesome. I loved how Sheldon helped break through Adam’s wall – that dog was as much a main character as the other 2 :D.

Maddie’s parents made me so angry, and even knowing the reasoning, I was not as forgiving as Maddie.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a beautiful love story. The author does an amazing job of making the characters believable and relatable. The story itself will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions from feeling high and on top of the world to then plunging down into the darkest depths.

Maddie and Adam both have secrets and past failings in their lives which make them the people they are today. But where Maddie tries to see the good in life Adam can only see the negative.

When Adam moved in next door to Maddie he wasn’t looking for romance or a connection. Struggling with his own demons he wanted to shut himself off from the world and never open his heart up to love again.
When Maddie meets Adam the chemistry from her is instant however Adam’s attitude and stand off and rude behaviour makes her question her attraction.
As time progresses and Maddie slowly works her way into Adam’s heart can they both overcome their pasts to build a happy future or will some demons keep them apart.

Slow Burn is the 2nd book in the Breathing Hearts series by A. K. MacBride. Each book can be read as a stand-alone. I had not read the first book in the series, in fact this is the first time I have read any of this author’s work, and I did not feel that I was missing any necessary information.
Slow Burn is a fantastic enemies to lovers romance that will take you on an emotional roller coaster. You may need tissues to read this book. I’ll admit to being rather teary at a few points in this book. In my mind if an author can cause this reaction then they are definitely doing something right.
I loved reading Adam and Maddie’s story. Both are not in a good place in their lives and are struggling, but for very different reasons. Let’s just say that their very first meeting is a memorable one and doesn’t show Adam in his best light. He does redeem himself and soon steals a place in your heart.
This is a really great book which had me totally engrossed from beginning to end and I would 100% recommend it.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What is there to say about Slow Burn by A.K. MacBride? Well for starters I actually didn’t like it at first. Adam’s standoffishness and Maddie’s need to bring out the best in everyone while ignoring herself hit too close to home. One could say my initial dislike was that I saw too much of myself in both characters. People never like hearing or accepting truths about themselves, but as I read on, the characters grew on me.
Adam became the guy to me who was running away to start over after the death of his wife, leaving him physically and emotionally scarred. Maddie broke inside because her family thought she was a failure because of her life choices. The main characters’ story lines were well written and beautifully displayed themselves throughout, which kept me reading. A romance in its own right, though the end was predictable, getting to that end was what kept me interested. The growth these two had individually as well as together put a smile on my face and changed my mind on how I felt.
A.K. MacBride won me over in the end, I look forward to reading other books in this series as well as outside of the by this author. I may not have loved the book but when it comes to the author I’m a huge fan!

Slow Burn by A.K MacBride is a Romance/ Enemies to Lovers book about love, loss, and second chances. Wow just Wow I wasn’t expecting to have my heart ripped to shreds and definitely was not ready for all the emotions I experienced while reading this wonderfully written story. This is about Adam and Maddie. Adam is a grumpy yet sexy man who was in a tragic accident that caused him to close off himself from friends and his family. He moves to Clearwater Bay to get away from the looks of pity. Maddie loves to dance but her dreams of dancing are put on hold. She finds herself working for her parents at their hardware store. She is given an opportunity to to help out a local business but will she do it? These both have their issues but together can tbey work? I absolutely loved this book and had a hard time putting it down once I started reading. I highly recommend reading this to find out what happens next. Slow Burn is a very appropriate title for this book. Adam is a tough guy persona with an ugly personality from emotional and physical trauma he suffered. I absolutely loved this story. It was sexy and beautiful and reminded me of my own love story IRL. Maddie and Adam will for sure light your kindle on fire with a “slow burn” that will have you aching for more AK MacBride ASAP! MacBride is a new author to me so this is a wonderful find for me at a five star read that had me so hooked I read well past my bedtime to find out if these two characters that had stolen my heart would get the happily ever after I so wanted them to have. Of course you will have to read and find out if they did for yourself because you won’t find that detail in my review lol but I can tell you this book is one you do not want to miss. Especially if you enjoy reads that can make you cry and laugh all in one chapter, not something that is easy to do with such ease and grace that AK MacBride does so very well in this one several times. I loved the fact that the tragedies were believable and relatable and made the story rich not heavy. I was completely invested in the futures of these two from the way they would love to the way they would live. I cannot wait to see what else is available from Ms. MacBride!

Slow Burn by A.K. Macbride. This is such a good friends to enemies read. Its the story of Adam who has moved to Clearwater Bay to put some space between him and his family. He is still trying to deal with the past tragedy and them pitying him only makes it worse. Maddie has moved back home to help her parents in their store and has had to put her dance dream on hold. When she moves next door to Adam with her dog Sheldon she meets him due to Sheldon being an escape artist. Adam is grumpy and mean. She wants no part of him but she decides to kill him with kindness. When Maddie is in danger he realizes he cares more than he wants to and he likes how he feels when he’s around her. A calmness washes over him due to her soothing presence. Doing anything to keep her safe Adam realizes his feelings are involved regardless of how he wants to feel. Will they find love with one another. Read Slow Burn to find out!

I absolutely loved this book! The plot was very sweet and tied up the loose pieces all around. I feel like the arcs were complete for both Maddie and Adam. The moment with Maddie and her father was exactly the right and I definitely did not expect it to happen in the way it did. Sheldon was a great link that helped break down the walls.

I really appreciated Maddie’s passion for dancing and the way the author painted the picture of her dancing on the beach. I felt that connection of art and healing is really important.

The title of the book gives you exactly what you would expect, a steamy slow burn romance. The depth of emotion in the story had me utterly captured, giving me a perfect mixture of angst, humour and that gratifying heart-warming feeling you crave in a good romance novel. The lead up and sizzling chemistry between Adam and Maddie was so palpable I couldn’t put the book down. Slow Burn (Breathing Hearts, #2)Slow Burn by A.K. MacBride
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a book that was very relatable to me more than one. As I am one who tries my hardest always to plan all things perfectly, and with much organization and being precise, sometimes life throws you a curve ball when you at least expect it, and you may find something you always needed, even when you had no idea you wanted it, until its right there embracing you. The book was very touching and fun in many ways!

First off I loved how the main two characters were so relatable in many ways. Adam reminded me of someone special to me, the same person I actually married haha. Adam was a soul whom had been through more than he deserved, and he ended up well with a bitter taste for life, and when he opens up on his demons you respect as well as understand for why he is how he is. Maddie on the other hand reminded me very much of myself, she had had goals that she planned to reach and life kept happening and everything seemed to overly get in the way for her. I found she was a bit deflated with things happening as much as she did, and I will admit I have been there more than once!

Throw these two souls together, well their actually neighbor’s so run ins are kind of unavoidable, and perhaps something so worth while could happen, something that neither of them could eve even think to live without if they got a taste for it? They both had issues they had been through, and besides the sizzling chemistry these two had, or the wants of making the other feel things that you only read in fun romance novels, was enough said for sure! What really got to me , was when they really spent time together and realized under their skins how much there was to each of them, and how much there was truly to love one another within them. They needed each other just as much as they wanted one another, but can demons stay afar so these two can find happiness? Or will the past come back to haunt them?

The book was a fun read, very informative as much as it was relatable of the two characters, but the chemistry was a huge awesome bonus. it made them more relatable than you would think at first glance, or in this case, first read. I loved the relationship between them and how they grew as themselves as well as being more than what they started out as when I started this book. Its a sentimental read for sure I felt, and very much was enjoyed. I think a lot of people will find relations with Maddie and Adam, as well as a lot of heart feelings as reading. its defiantly a high recommendation on my end, with no hesitations!

I have seen countless reviews for this book claiming that five stars simply aren’t enough to explain how amazing it is.. and I am in 100% agreement with all of these reviewers! A.K. did such an amazing job with this story and I am looking forward to going through everything she has to offer and absorbing every word.
Adam and Maddie’s story is something incredible. He has a tough history and is hard to approach, grumpier than a normal 30-something-year-old man, and has forgotten all the potential good he has to offer. Maddie has been struggling with her family about her life choices for as long as she can remember and feels as though she cannot please them while staying true to herself. It is in the peace they find watching each other and getting to know each other that they are able to slowly put themselves back together and push past those hard things to create better futures for themselves. Slow burn is an adequate description of this story, but it is ABSOLUTELY worth the wait.

Slow Burn by A.K. Macbride is book two of the Breathing Hearts series. I read this book in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down!

Maddie’s new neighbor is kind of a mystery. She never sees him leave and she hasn’t even met him. She finally sees him in passing and boy is he rude.

Maddie is trying to work through her failure at dancing and her lack of support from any of her family. Luckily, he grandmother left her the house with the great view of the beach. Adam moved to hideout and live with his grief and guilt. Both of them have their own demons to work through but they are certainly drawn together. After all Maddie does say “Your broken parts were made to fit mine”. Adam has made a lot of progress after a few weeks but when Maddie invites him to her mom’s birthday party things go off the rails. Will these two be able to work passed all their baggage to be together?

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were great. They held so much emotion you couldn’t help but feel it for them. I highly recommend this book!
